二、阅读理解
(A)
I was sixteen, an age that most people see as too young for overseas travel, but I strongly
wished to explore and learn about other cultures and ways of life. When I learned about an
organization called International Cultural Adventures(ICA), I called and talked with the program
director, David Pruskin, about my interest in Nepal( 尼泊尔 )and their 6 - week Nepal Cultural
Experience Program. I told him that I would talk to my parents and see if I could go on this
program and do some volunteer work in Nepal over the summer.
I arrived in Nepal on a very hot afternoon at last. I was really fascinated. I gained a deep
appreciation and some understanding of the kingdom quickly. I found the Nepalese people to be
friendly and open to sharing their culture with visitors. There was hardly a day when someone
didn't invite me into their house or shop to drink “chiyaa,” the milky tea which is so common in
Nepal.
Another interesting part of the program was teaching during the volunteer service time. I
taught English to elementary school kids in Katmandu(the capital of Nepal). Although I had no
idea how I was going to teach English to kids who spoke another language, it turned out to be a
success, partly because the kids already knew some English. I told them things about my country
and in return they told me things about Nepal. It was good for all of us. If I could do it again, I
would learn more about teaching methods(方法)and bring some resources(materials)for teaching
with me.
( )1.The writer found the people in Nepal were_________.
A.fat B.lazy C.friendly D.terrible
( )2.“Chiyaa” is a kind of_________.

Dear Mary,
I hope you are well, because I'm not. I'm having problem with mum and dad and I want
to leave home. I really need your advice.
Mum and dad think I'm a child. Last night I went out and came back at midnight. They
were still up waiting for me and we had a fight. They think I stay out too late, but my friends
stay out even later than me! It's not fair! And this is not the only problem. Mum still wants to buy
all my clothes for me. Of course, I don't like what she buys because she never gets me anything
that's in fashion. What should I do, Mary? Can I come and live with you?
Please write back soon.
Yours,
Francis

Dear Francis,
I got your letter today and I'm writing back immediately. I'm sorry to hear that you're so
upset.
I don't think that it's a good idea to leave home and come and live with me. You must solve
your problems, not run away from them! You're right, mum and dad shouldn't treat you like a
child, but don't forget-you're only fourteen and they worry about you. Why don't you explain to
them how you feel? Tell them that you're growing up and need more freedom. But every time you
go out, you should tell them where you're going and who you are going to be with. Then they
won't worry so much. You should also tell mum that you want to go shopping with her. I'm sure
she will understand. If you show her the kind of clothes you like, she'll buy you what you want.
Take my advice and you'll see that things aren't as bad as you think.
I really hope everything goes well. Write back and tell me.
Love,
Mary

Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. As with many sports, it is not known
tor sure how soccer began. Many believe that the earliest games were played in China and Japan
over 1, 000 years ago. The game we know today probably started in England. Many of the
earliest soccer games were very rough, and for years, British royalty tried to ban the sport. They
were not successful.
In 1857, the first soccer team was created in Sheffield, England. In 1863, eleven English
teams met to form the first Football Association. In 1904, a world association was created, the
Federation International Football Association(FIFA).
In the World Cup Final, thirty-two teams from different countries compete to win the
championship. The 2002 World Cup championships were special. It was the first time the games
were played in Asia. It was also the first time that two countries, Japan and Korea, hosted the
World Cup together.

(B)1)Dear Mary,
There is nothing wrong with being heavier than other people. So don' t feel bad about your
appearance. If you are upset, you might have an unhappy look. You needn't feel embarrassed
about being fat. Be confident about yourself and just take part in the activities you enjoy. There
is no need to worry about what people might say. Be proud of yourself and people will respect
you more.
If you want to lose weight, you can eat more vegetables instead of junk food. Besides,
exercise can make you fit. Enjoy your life!

Playing football can keep you healthy and watching football match is really fun. But you
might not get good grades if you spend too much time on football instead of study. So don't forget
to study first. If there is a match that you really want to see, only let yourself watch it after you
have done your homework. When a class finishes, don't talk to your friends unless you have
understood every- thing the teachers said. If not, do some extra work, and only then, talk about
last night's football match. Good luck!
