The Spring Festival together with the winter holidays often means sharing cakes, candies and
other delicious food with friends and families. Most people will eat more than they usually do. But
doctors find out that what you eat may affect how well you remember things. This is bad news for
people who eat too much.
Forgetfulness seems to many people an inevitable(不可避免的) part of ageing. As our bodies
grow older, most of us find that many things we should remember are slipping out of minds. But new
facts show that it’s possible to slow time’s effects on our minds.
Once people thought that the brain(大脑) could not make new cells(细胞), but now studies show
that learning new things can help brain grow and keep the illness away from the brain.
Professor Eric Kandel, a Nobel Prize winner for his study of the human memory, says the best way
to save our memories is to keep our brains in good shape. Through mental(脑力的) exercise, he says,
people can keep their memories whole into their 80s and 90s.
And Mark Mattson, a professor at the National Institute on ageing, says that reducing the amount
of calories fed to older rats and mice by thirty percent can be a good help to learning and memory.
While it’s hard for many people to go on their diet(节食) like that, doctors tell us that even small steps
can make big difference.
( )34. Doctors find out that ______may be bad for your memory.
A. delicious food B. eating too much C. drinking too much D. doing exercise
( )35. The underlined word “slipping” in this passage means ______.
A. 1eaving quietly B. forgetting slowly C. growing fast D. coming badly
( )36. Who thinks that we can save our memories through mental exercise? ______.
A. Nobel B. Mark Mattson C. Eric Kandel D. A famous doctor
( )37. The writer thinks that ______ is a big problem we face as we grow older.
A. illness B. cell C. diet D. forgetfulness
( )38. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? ______.
A. It was believed that nothing new could help brain grow
B. It’s possible for us to slow time’s effects on our bodies
C. It was not easy for many people to go on their diet ten years ago
D. It is very important for the old to fight forgetfulness
C
Do you know that you can use your watch as a compass(指南针) on a sunny day? Take a watch and
point(指向) the hour-hand in the direction of the sun. Imagine a line which runs from the center of the
watch through a point half-way between the hour-hand and number one. This line will surely point
south.
If you know astronomy a little, you will understand why this works. In the northern half of the earth,
the Sun is in the south at noon. In Russia the real noon is one o’clock. If at that time we point the
hour-hand at the Sun, the hour-hand and number one will point south. That is why you must imagine a
line which will run from the center of the watch through a point half-way between the hour-hand and
number one. It will point south. If you are in the southern part of our planet, you must point number 12
at the Sun. The line which you can imagine between number 12 and the hour-hand will then show
north.
( )39. When we do this experiment in the northern part of the earth, we should point
____________at the Sun.
A. number 12 B. the minute-hand C. the hour-hand D. number one
( )40. What does the underlined word “astronomy” mean in the passage?

( )41. The passage tells us that we can use a watch on a sunny day.
A. to study the weather B. to show direction
C. to enjoy ourselves D. to keep good time
( )42. If you are in Australia, which of the following is right way to show north?
D
I’m beginning to think whether my grandmother is right when she complains,as she often does, that
children nowdays aren’t as well-behaviored as they used to be.She recounts(描述) how she used to be
told to respect her elders. She was taught to speak when she was spoken to and when she went out on
her own,she was reminded to say”please” and “thank you”.Children in her days, she continues, were
expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their
children to mind her manners.
If you give her the chance, she then goes out of writing desk the old photos which she keeps
there.Of course when you look at pictures of her parents, you feel sure that, with a father as strict
looking as that, you too would have been “seen but not heard”.Beside him sits his wife, with their
children around her:Granny and her elder brothers. Those long, stiff(僵直) ,black clothes were so heavy
to a little girl that she hadn’t enough breath left.It must have been a boring and lonely life too,for she
stayed mianly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent to school from an early age.
However,my childhood was much freer than Granny’s.I went to school with my brother.I played
football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common language, and we got up to the same
mischief(恶作剧).I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wearing black, stiff clothes.
( )43.The writer thinks that her grandmother _____________.
A.makes mistakes about the youth B.complains too much about her childhood
C.received good education at school D.had an unhappy life when she was a child

d__67_____pictures for bicycles and also for flying machines and some other things. Those things

A person riding a bicycle uses very little e 69 to make the bicycle move, and there is no

by bicycle. It is not because the bicycles are expensive or people feel t 71 if they ride to work. It's
because the number of cars on the roads becomes l 72 . It c 73 becomes more dangerous
to ride a bicycle. As a result, more people put their bicycles a 74 and go to work in their cars
and, in this way, the situation is made more serious. Perhaps the best way to make riding safer and
