第三部分:阅读理解(共两节;每小题 2分,满分 20分)
第一节:阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和 D)中,选出最
佳选项。
2004 was a good year for American farmers. Total farm earnings were estimated
(估计) at 74,000 million dollars for the year. That means the average(平均的) farm
income was about 71,000 dollars, or a gain of about three percent from the year
before.
However, the growth in earnings depended on the size of the farm. Large farms
had increased earnings of six and one-half percent. Smaller farms saw growth in
earnings of less than three percent.
Part of American farm income came from the federal (联邦的) government. The
Department of Agriculture reports that about thirty-nine percent of farmers accepted
some kind of aid(援助), or subsidy in 2003. Reports say the total amount of farm aid
paid last year is estimated at 15,700 million dollars.
An organization called the Environmental Working Group keeps information on
all farm subsidies paid by the government. The group examined subsidies between
1995 and 2003.
It says ten percent of farms received seventy-two percent of government subsidies
during that nine-year period. The group says big farms that are organized as
corporations (公司 ) or partnership businesses receive the most aid. It says the big
farms receive more aid, even when they are more profitable(盈利的 ) than smaller
family farms.
Critics(评论家) say farm subsidies are costly and wasteful. Critics also note that
subsidies go only to growers of widely traded crops, like corn, cotton, wheat and
soybean.
But many farmers, including the ones who only receive a few thousand dollars a
year, support the subsidy programs. They say small farming communities in states like
Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota would not survive without the aid.
56. What is the probable number of American farms?
A. 10 million. B. 1 million.
C. 10 thousand. D. 100 thousand.
57. Why was 2004 a good year for American farmers?
A. American farmers’ earnings increased a lot in 2004.
B. The federal government gave American farmers more aid in 2004.
C. Big farms were organized as partnership businesses in 2004.
D. The federal government reduced farmers’ taxes in 2004.
58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. All American farmers can get the government aid.
B. Only big farms can get the government aid.
C. Only profitable farms can get the government aid.
D. Farmers growing crops like corn and cotton may get the government aid easily.

Dr David Weeks has spent years studying these so-called “Superyoung” people.
Now the reporter(R) is interviewing Dr Weeks(DW).
R: Dr Weeks, could you start by telling us exactly what you mean by the
expression “Superyoung”?
DW: Yes, well, I mean a lucky group of people who actually look and feel as
much as 18 years younger than they really are.
R: Is looking younger than our age just a question of our genes?
DW: Well, of course it’s one of the important things. But we have many other
things to think about. My study has shown, for example, that a happy life is quite
important. They often have friendships with people younger than themselves too.
R: And do the “Superyoung” have a lot of children?
DW: No, in fact the opposite. Our study showed that 15% of the “Superyoung”
don’t have children at all and those that have children usually have small families, one
or two children at most.
R: Is lifestyle important?
DW: Yes, the “Superyoung” usually sleep very well and have usual or even low
blood pressure. Our study showed that they travel more often and when they do travel
they often travel further. Generally speaking, they are also people who read more and
watch less TV than the rest of us.
R: And do they do a lot of exercise or sport?
DW: Yes, in fact we found that they are the kind of people who prefer to do sport
rather than watch sport. A strange fact we discovered is that they prefer the sports one
person does such as swimming or walking to playing team sports such as football.

Hello, listeners. Welcome to Hengtong Hospital Radio. Before our music program
at four, I’m going to repeat some of our hospital rules.
The hospital can sleep 800 patients. There are on average 8 beds in one ward. The
visiting hours are in the afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30 and in the evening from 7:00 to
8:00.
You can see the no smoking sign — we don’t allow smoking in the wards, and the
same goes for alcoholic drinks. I’m sure you understand why. However, if you do
need to smoke, there are special areas where it is allowed.
You will find the radio switch on the wall near your bed, with your own
headphones, if you want to listen. It is our own hospital radio wishing you a speedy
recovery.
