Stepinac has become one of the first high schools in the country to drop all textbooks and
replace them with a “digital library”. When students started classes on Monday, they would install
an app on their tablets or laptops and get instant access to all 40 texts in the Stepinac curriculum.
Dennis Lauro, director of an information center which provided technical support for public
schools in New York, said neither he nor his colleagues were aware of a similar digital effort in a
public school setting. “This is the wave of the future,” Lauro said. “I’m not surprised that private
school would beat the public schools to it. They have the ability to just do it. There is so much
politics involved in public schools, and when it comes to a move like that, they need approval
from boards and committees.”
For Tom Collins, Stepinac’s president, the commitment to digital source material was not so
difficult a decision. In the past, students’ families had to spend up to $700 a year on textbooks.
This year-after the one-time purchase of a tablet or laptop families only need to pay $150. Using
the digital library is almost as easy as opening a new book. A student can instantly open a map of
Egypt or a speech by President John F. Kennedy in a digital book. A teacher can show a page from
a digital book on a whiteboard at the front of the class or send students a link to a particular math
problem with notes added in.
The first few weeks may bring some challenges. Stepinac officials expect some parental
discomfort over dropping concrete books. They recognize there may be technical faults at first.
And they will have to encourage students to leave space-eating photos and music off their tablets
--- and to keep their tablets charged.
4. What is going on in Stepinac?
A. It’s building a new library. B. It’s reforming its textbooks.
C. It’s updating its digital resources. D. It’s changing its management pattern.
5. By saying the underlined sentence, Lauro believes ____________.
A. private schools have their advantages
B. public schools face great challenges
C. the effort is to cause instant changes
D. it’s a trend for schools to go digital
6. Which of the following is the advantage of using the digital library?
A. It helps students to remember well.
B. It helps save money for the students.
C. It includes all the knowledge students want to learn.
D. It gives students the chance to learn high technology.
7. Who may worry about the move in Stepinnc?
A. Officials. B. Technicians. C. Parents. D. Teachers.
C
When is cleaning walls a crime? When you’re doing it to create art, obviously. A number of
street artists around the world have started expressing themselves through a practice known as
reverse graffiti (涂鸦). They find dirty surfaces and paint them with images or messages using
cleaning brushes or pressure hoses Either way, it’s the same principle: the image is
made by cleaning away the dirt. Each artist has their own individual style but all artists share a
common aim: to draw attention to the pollution in our cities.
The UK’s Paul Curtis, better known as Moose, operates around Leeds and London and has
been appointed by a number of companies to make reverse graffiti advertisements. Brazilian artist,
Alexandre Orion, turned one of Sao Paulo’s transport tunnels into an amazing wall painting in
2006 by getting rid of the dirt. Made up of series of white skulls (颅骨), the painting reminds
drivers of the effect their pollution is having on the planet. “Every motorist sits in the comfort of
their car, but they don’t give any consideration to the price their comfort has for the environment
and consequently for themselves,” says Orion.
The anti-pollution message of the reverse graffiti artists confuses city authorities since the
main argument against graffiti is that it spoils the appearance of both types of property: public and
private. This was what Leeds City Council said about Moose’s work: “Leeds residents want to live
in clean and attractive neighborhoods. We view this kind of advertising as environmental damage
and will take strong action against it.” Moose was ordered to “clean up his act.” How was he
supposed to do this: by making all property he had cleaned dirty again?
As for the Brazilian artist’s work, the authorities were annoyed but could find nothing to
charge him with. They had no other option but to clean the tunnel — but only the parts Alexandre
had already cleaned. The artist merely continued his campaign on the other side. The city officials
then decided to take further action. They not only cleaned the whole tunnel but every tunnel in Sao
Paulo.
8. What do we learn from the passage about reverse graffiti?
A. It uses paint to create anti-pollution images.
B. It creates a lot of trouble for local residents.
C. It causes lots of distraction to drivers.
D. It turns dirty walls into artistic works.
9. What do we learn about Brazilian artist Alexandre Orion?
A. He was good at painting white skulls.
B. He chose tunnels to do his graffiti art.
C. He suggested banning all polluting cars.
D. He was fond of doing creative artworks.
10. What does the author imply about Leeds City Council’s decision?
A. It is simply absurd. B.It is well-informed.
C. It is rather unexpected. D.It is quite sensible.
11. How did Sao Paulo city officials handle Alexandre Orion's reverse graffiti?
A. They made him clean all the tunnels in Sao Paulo.
B. They took further action to ban all reverse graffiti.
C. They charged him with polluting tunnels in the city.
D. They made it impossible for him to practice his art.
根据第一段“to draw attention to the pollution in our cities(关注我们城市的污
染)”及第三段“The anti-pollution message of the reverse graffiti(反污染意义的涂鸦)”可知,艺术
故选 A 项。
根据第二段“Brazilian artist, Alexandre Orion, turned one of Sao Paulo's
transport tunnels into an amazing wall painting in 2006 by getting rid of the dirt.(在 2006 年,巴西

根据第三段 “We view this kind of advertising as environmental damage and
will take strong action against it.(我们认为这种广告会破坏环境,所以要强力反对)”及“Moose
was ordered to “clean up his act.”(Moose 被命令“改过自新”)”可知,前文讲述艺术家为了呼吁
How was he
supposed to do this: by making all property he had cleaned dirty again?(该怎么做呢?
选 A 项。
根据第四段“They not only cleaned the whole tunnel but every tunnel in Sao

A new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, reveals that
non-human animals' tears are not so different from our own. The chemical similarities are so great,
in fact, that the composition of other species' tears—and how they're adapted to their
environments-may provide insights into better treatments for human eye disease.
Previously, scientists had studied closely only the tears of a handful of mammals, including
humans, dogs, horses, camels, and monkeys. In the new study, Brazilian veterinarians analyzed
the tears of reptiles and birds for the first time , focusing on seven species.
Tears, which are released from tear tubes, form a film over the eye that's composed of three
ingredients: mucus, waler, and oil. The mucus coats the eyes surface and helps to attach the film to
the eye, the water is a natural salty solution containing crucial proteins and minerals, and the oil
prevents the eye from drying out.
Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears; the expression "crocodile
tears," which refers to a person's phony display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency
of crocodiles to release tears as they eat.
But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag at Iowa State University, who
was not involved in the new research. They help with vision by lubricating and clearing the eye.
They also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition to the cornea, the eye's clear outer
layer, which lacks blood tubes, he says.
Learning how reptiles and birds' use tears may also inspire new medications for conditions
such as dry eye, which occurs when tear tubes don't produce enough oil. The disease, common in
cats, dogs, and people, can sometimes lead to blindness.
12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The source of tears. B. The composition of tears.
C. The classification of tears, D. The definition of tears.
13. What does the underlined word "phony” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Tricky. B. Regretful. C. Cold. D. False.
14. Which statement does Lionel Sebbag agree with?
A. Weeping contributes to eye disease. B. The cornea has rich blood tubes.
C. Tears oil and clear the eyes. D. More tears mean better vision.
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Tears, a barrier to eyes B. A better treatment for eye disease
C. Non-human tears promise new cures D. Other species’ tears are similar to humans'

____36____ (search) for goat that had got lost 是 Muhammed
walked along the sea cliffs 的目的,应用动词不定式作目的状语, 故填 To search 注意首字母
修饰 a man, name 逻辑主语 a man 之间是被动关系, 应用过去分词, 故填 named。
此处是“It is/ was the first time + that 从句”句型, 强调第一次做的
examined。
分析句子结构可知, among ____41____ are the oldest known versions
of the Hebrew Scriptures
in a hurry 是固定短语, 意为“仓促,匆忙”,故填 a。
分析句子结构可知,____43____ (date) from the 3rd century BC to
Dating

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home
from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to
myself: Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must really be nerd(书呆子)”
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all
his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I
saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in
his eyes. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in
his eye. As I handed him his glasses, he said, "thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was
one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him.
Over next four years, Kyle and I became the best friends. When we were seniors, he had the
highest marks in the class and was chosen to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. I teased
him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a lot, and I was so glad it wasn't me having
to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle. said. "Hey big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of
those looks, the really grateful one, and said "Thanks," smiling.
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those
who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings,
maybe a coach...but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone
is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story.

Paragraph 2:
I smiled back in tears._________________________________________________________

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. Kyle had
planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his
Mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. Meanwhile, I found he looked
hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing
the unspeakable." I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all
about his weakest moment. When his eyes caught mine, I was able to see fears shimmered in his
smiling eyes.
I smiled back in tears. Not until that moment did I realize what a big difference one small
gesture had made to him. I even saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same
grateful smile. It dawned on me that never should we underestimate the power of our actions. With
one small gesture we can change a person's life. For better or for worse.
