But perhaps some of the places people look for never existed—or did they ? Here are just a few famous mythical(神话里的) cities. El Dorado El Dorado is a story that began in 1537, when Spanish explorers found the Muisca people in the mountains of what is now Colombia. They heard the story of a man who covered himself with gold and dived into a lake. Then people began to talk of El Dorado— “the golden man". Soon people started to think of El Dorado as a place, too—a city of gold and amazing riches. Nowadays, the name “El Dorado" is still used to mean "a place where you can get rich quickly”. Atlantis There was once an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was the mythical island of Atlantis. The people of the island were very rich, thanks to the natural resource on the island. For hundreds of years, they lived simple lives. But slowly they began to change. They started to want power. So the gods decided to destroy Atlantis. Suddenly, the island and its people were swallowed by the sea and were never seen again. Shambhala In Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Shambhala is a mystical country that is hidden somewhere behind the Himalayas. Shambhala is a word from an old language that means “a place of peace” or “a place of happiness”. It is said that there is no war in Shambhala, and in the future, when the world is full of war, a huge army will come out of Shambhala, destroy the world’s bad rulers, and start a new Golden Age. Some people say this will happen in 2424. 1. Nowadays, the name“ El Dorado” means“ ______”. A. Colombia B. the golden man C. a place of great wealth D. a city with mountains 2. Atlantis was destroyed by______. A. the gods B. its people C. its powerful enemies D. its neighboring country 3. What will probably happen in 2424 according to the last paragraph? A. The Himalayas will disappear. B. The world will be full of peace. C. Shambhala will save the world. D. There will be a war in Shambhala. 【答案】1-3 CAC 【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了三个著名的神话城市。 1. C 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Nowadays, the name ‘El Dorado’ is still used to mean ‘a place where you can get rich quickly’.”可知如今,“El Dorado”这个名字仍然被用来表示“你可以迅速 致富的地方”。由此可知,如今“El Dorado”这个名字的意思是“富庶之地”。故选 C。 2. A 细节理解题。根据第三段中“So the gods decided to destroy Atlantis. Suddenly, the island and its people were swallowed (淹没)by the sea and were never seen again.”可知所以众神决定 摧毁亚特兰蒂斯。突然,这个岛和岛上的人被大海吞没,再也没有出现过。由此可知,亚特 兰蒂斯被诸神摧毁了。故选 A。 3. C 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“It is said that there is no war in Shambhala, and in the future, when the world is full of war, a huge army will come out of Shambhala, destroy the world’s bad rulers, and start a new Golden Age. Some people say this will happen in 2424.”可知据说 Shambhala 没有战争,在未来,当世界充满了战争,一支庞大的军队将从 Shambhala 出来, 摧毁世界的坏统治者,并开始一个新的黄金时代。有人说这将发生在 2424 年。由此可知, 2424 年,Shambhala 将拯救世界。故选 C。 B While it’s not vacation travel, one of the great things of my job is regularly seeing various parts of Canada. Often, that means going to places well off the typical tourist track. And, Just as frequently, those communities prove to be the most interesting destinations After many years of not having time during its opening hours to visit the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. I finally made it inside this fall. What really makes the Glenbow different is its approach to an issue many museums are facing: how to present the story of indigenous(土著的) people in Canada within institution largely built around the experiences of the people who came here from Europe and the rest of the world. The Glenbow takes several approaches. There is a large and brilliant gallery in which the Niitsitapi or Blackfoot people tell their own history. It’s worth the price of admission on its own. In a nearby gallery is a multimedia installation(装置) by Kent Monkman, the Toronto indigenous artist, on the near extinction of the American bison(野牛) during the19th century because of overhunting by white settlers. But the representation of indigenous people doesn’t stop there. Each of the museum’s other history galleries has a large board offering “A First Nations Perspective” on a topic. While reconciliation(和解) with indigenous people remains more of a goal than a reality in Canada, the Glenbow and other museums are at least taking first steps. Most Canadians know about skating on the Rideau Canal in the capital Ottawa. And in recent years, the capital has been in a friendly competition with Winnipeg about which city has the longest or biggest or greatest skating trail. But while in Sudbury, Ontario, early this year, I discovered that skating is also quite popular there. Not far from my hotel in the Little Britain neighborhood was the Queen’s Athletic Skating Oval. On the snowy evening when I wandered over, the wide perfectly shaped oval, which is surfaced with Zamboni(赞博尼磨冰机), was being enjoyed by new adult skaters, and many apparently newcomers to Canada with skates. Then out by the campus of Laurentian University, about 1.5 kilometers of Ramsey Lake are cleared and flooded to create skating path. I hadn’t packed my skates before heading to Sudbury so I was only part of an audience. 4. What makes the Glenbow Museum unique according to the author? A. It has many indigenous artists working as guides. B. It is built around the experiences of Europeans. C. It adopts different ways to present indigenous people’s stories. D. It has fewer opening hours than any other museum in Canada. 5. What can we learn about the reconciliation with indigenous people? A. There are mixed opinions about it. B. A lot more efforts are still needed to solve it C. Museums can actually do little to help with it. D. The governments have attached little attention to it. 6. Why are the three cities mentioned in the last paragraph? A. They’re home to promising skaters. B. They all rely heavily on skating activities. C. They compete to build skating paths. D. They’re all great cities for skating. 7. What does the text focus on? A. The author' varied jobs. B. The enjoyable parts of the author’s travel C. The typical Canadian tourist destinations. D. The importance of cultural diversity. 【答案】4-7 CBDB 【语篇解读】本文是记叙文。作者在文章中讲述了他在加拿大工作期间的一些见闻。 4. That seems to be Amazon’s vision for the future of the smart home. According to the company that literally invented the smart home voice assistant, talking to their devices is just temporary stage. Next, their gadgets(小器具)will ‘just know’ what we want and do it for us without a single command. To plot this route, the consumer tech giant showed off a lot of new gadgets at its annual hardware event in September, 2020. This vision of an ‘ambient home’, as outlined by Amazon’s senior vice president David Limp at the event, has been the roadmap for home automation for decades. A true smart home doesn’t just react to commands; it’s predictive, working out what you need, when you need it. The first step is connectivity. The Echo smart speaker line that was recently unveiled comes with a suite of tech to keep everything connected. The fourth generation Echo, along with the new Echo Show 10 smart display, both include a Zigbee smart home hub, along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy. And all the Echos act as bridges for Amazon Sidewalk --- a low-bandwidth network that stretches the connectivity of your home beyond the four walls to the pavement and even to your neighbours’ garden. This extended network is designed to support expanding the smart home out to the smart garden and the smart driveway and beyond to the smart neighbourhood. At the event, Amazon also showed off an actual robot. The Ring Always Home Cam ($250, coming in 2021) was perhaps the most terrible offering from the event, and certainly raised a fair number of eyebrows. At roughly 13cm high, the Ring Always Home Cam is a drone(无人机)with what looks like a video doorbell attached to it. It rises up from its docking station and flies on pre-set paths at your request. If a security event is detected, it streams footage to your phone. But, as Limp says, the ‘ambient home’ is a long-term vision, and there’s still lots to be done to make that a reality. 8. What is the future smart home expected to do according to Amazon? A. Read our minds. B. Talk like humans. C. Obey our commands. D. Replace traditional homes. 9. What is Amazon Sidewalk? A. Free Wi-Fi. B. A speaker line. C. A kind of Bluetooth. D. Community network. 10. What do we know about the Ring Always Home Cam? A. It is a security camera. B. It is attached to the door. C. It sells well at the market. D It functions as a video doorbell. 11. What does Limp think of the ambient home? A. It will be available in 2021. B. It is still a thing of the future. C. It has nothing to do with Echo. D. It will be popular in communities. 【答案】8-11 ADAB 【语篇解读】本文是说明文。未来智能家庭是什么样的?我们从亚马逊公司展出的一些新产 品中可窥见一斑。 8. A 推理判断题。根据第一段中的 Next, their gadgets will ‘just know’ what we want and do it for us without a single command 和第二段中的 true smart home doesn’t just react to commands; it’s predictive, working out what you need, when you need it 可知,未来的智能家庭不用我们发 出命令便可想我们所想。 9. D。细节理解题。根据第三段中破折号后对 Amazon Sidework 解释 a low-bandwidth network that stretches the connectivity of your home beyond the four walls to the pavement and even to your neighbours’ garden. This extended network is designed to support expanding the smart home out to the smart garden and the smart driveway and beyond to the smart neighbourhood 可知, Amazon Sidewalk 应该是一个可以将单个家庭和周边、周围邻居连接起来的网络。 10. A 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中 If a security event is detected, it streams footage to your phone 可知, Ring Always Home Cam 其实就是一个会飞的、用来监控家里是否安全的摄像头。 11.B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的 long-term vision, and there’s still lots to be done to make that reality 可知,要实现 ambient home 我们还有很长的路要走,还有很多事要做。 D Researchers have discovered a new bacterium that feeds on polyurethane, a kind of plastic that is difficult to recycle or destroy. Scientists say the discovery could help reduce a flood of hard-to-recycle plastics that are ending up in the world’s landfills( 垃 圾 填 埋 场 )and polluting oceans. A team from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, found the new type of soil bacteria. It was spotted in an area that contained a large amount of plastic waste. The team discovered the bacteria were feeding on polyurethane diol, which was widely used in many different products. One problem is that recycling polyurethane requires a lot of energy. The plastic material does not melt when heated. Most polyurethane-based products end up in landfills, where they can release dangerous chemicals. The team found that the bacterium can produce enzymes(酶) that eat away polyurethane. This would make it possible to break down the material in the environment. The results were recently reported in a study in the publication Frontiers in Microbiology. Hermann Heipieper helped write the report. He said in a statement the finding “represents an important step in being able to reuse polyurethane products”. German study noted that plastic-eating bacteria could be easily controlled and produced for industrial use. The researchers said the next step is to find more information about the bacterial enzymes that can break down polyurethane. Scientist Douglas Rader wrote about the issue in an article for the Environmental Defense Fund. He said much more study should be carried out to learn about the complex relationships between bacteria and marine ecosystems. “Such research is needed before we can take action such as putting plastic-eating bacteria into the ocean,” Rader wrote. 12. What is the problem about polyurethane? A. It seems difficult to transport when it goes to landfills. B. It affects the quality of plastic products if widely used. C. It melts easily when exposed to the sun for a long time. D. It pollutes the environment unless recycled or destroyed. 13. What do we know about the new type of bacteria? A. It can produce harmful chemicals. B. It can gradually destroy polyurethane. C. It is very hard to discover and control. D. It is very likely to increase plastic waste. 14. What is Douglas Rader’s attitude towards the future use of the new bacterium? A. Doubtful B. Disapproved C. Cautious. D. Enthusiastic, 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Plastic-eating Bacteria B. Plastic Waste --- Big Problem C. Plastic and Ocean D. Polyurethane --- A Bacteria Killer 【答案】12-15 DBCA 【语篇解读】本文主要讲述科学家发现了一种可以食用塑料聚氨酯的细菌。 12. You will have your own pace of adjusting. Everyone goes through changes in their life, and it may seem that you are going through more changes than the average person ---- but as long as you hold on to what's important to you and find a good combination between old and new, you'll be fine. The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night. When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in town as quiet as this. Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels. He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen. Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way. Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly. The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. After about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: Now Frank knew what the man wanted to do. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Frank couldn't just stand in the dark and wait. If only he had charged his phone before leaving the office, but it was too late. (84 words) Frank couldn't just stand in the dark and wait. He had to do something.
