Rumaasha Maasha was preparing to fly from Huntsville to Colorado back in January when he spotted a liquid leak from his window seat on the wing. “Normally, if it’s a wet day, you’ll see vortices (旋涡) off the wing. About 1,000 feet off the ground, I started seeing something white and thought, ‘maybe we’re just hitting some humidity (湿 气).’ Well, after a while it was still doing it, and that’s when I knew something was up. I looked closer and immediately realized that we were losing fuel.” Maasha also knew that as the plane increased in altitude, the situation would got worse. “I gestured the flight attendant to come over and fortunately she was very attentive,” he said. “She called the crew and the key thing is that she did this as we were still climbing out. Within a minute or two, they reduced speed and leveled off. The fuel leak diminished immediately when they slowed down.” Much to the anger of the passengers, the plane returned to the Huntsville airport, but upon finding out the reason for the return—and the hero behind it—some of the passengers made friends with Maasha. Maasha’s experience with NASA wasn’t the only thing that came in handy that day, the engineer first fell in love with aviation (航空) as a teenager growing up near an airport in Monrovia, Liberia. “Looking back, I guess I had the perfect sets of circumstances to recognize the issue that day,” he said. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always tried to sit in a window seat near the wing, and as I grew up, I am determined to run after my dream during my university years. That’s not the first time I’ve noticed something. I’m sure it won’t be the last.” 4. When did Maasha realize something went wrong? A. Before the plane started to fly. B. When the white thing continued to leak. C. After he settled on his window seat. D. When he first noticed the liquid. 5. What does the underlined word “diminished” mean in paragraph 4? A. Worsened. B. Decreased. C. Occurred. D. Continued. 6. What played a major role in Maasha’s brave action? A. His birth place and home location. B. His university years and honesty. C. His childhood education and seat choice. D. His working experience and personal interest. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Childhood Dream Has Come True B. Fluid Leaking Happened to a Jet C. A NASA Engineer Saved Passengers D. Passengers Feel Grateful to an Engineer 【答案】4. B 5. B 6. D 7. 根据文章第三段关键句““Normally, if it’s a wet day, you’ll see vortices (旋涡) off the wing. About 1,000 feet off the ground, I started seeing something white and thought, ‘maybe we’re just hitting some humidity (湿气).’ Well, after a while it was still doing it, and that’s when I knew something was up. I looked closer and immediately realized that we were losing fuel.””(“通 常,如果天气潮湿,你会看到机翼上的漩涡。 根据画线单词上段最后一句“Maasha also knew that as the plane increased in altitude, the situation would got worse.”(Maasha 也知道,随着飞机高度的增加,情况会变得更 糟。) 根据画线单词所在句上句 “Within a minute or two, they reduced speed and leveled off.”(不到一两分钟,他们就减速平稳 下来。) 根据文章最后一段关键句“Maasha’s experience with NASA wasn’t the only thing that came in handy that day, the engineer first fell in love with aviation (航空) as a teenager growing up near an airport in Monrovia, Liberia. “Looking back, I guess I had the perfect sets of circumstances to recognize the issue that day,” he said. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always tried to sit in a window seat near the wing, and as I grew up, I am determined to run after my dream during my university years.”(Maasha 在美国航天局的经历并不是那天派上用场的唯一原因,这位工程师 在 Monrovia, Liberia 的一个机场附近长大,十几岁时就第一次爱上了航空。 分析文章,结合文章第一段内容“It can be easy to brush off certain events as small matters that don’t require attention— but when the safety of dozens of airplane passengers was on the tine, this NASA engineer decided to speak up.”(把某些事件当作不需要注意的小事来搪塞是 很容易的,但当几十名飞机乘客的安全受到威胁时,这位美国宇航局的工程师决定大声说出 来。) C Motion picture, also called film or movie, series of sill photographs on film, projected in rapid succession onto a screen by means of light. This new art form became one of the most popular and influential media of the 20th century and beyond. In early twentieth-century France, a new form of entertainment was becoming a hit—motion pictures. People crowded into theatres for short, silent, black-and-white films that showed everyday happenings, such as a train pulling into a station. These images were dimly projected onto white sheets. Usually, there was no sound. Occasionally, men at pianos played music to match the scenes. Later, with the introduction of colour and sound, the silent film soon disappeared. Colour and sound introduced a new world into the cinema and steadily grew more effective. It can be used to produce a powerful dramatic impression. Moving images at theatres are now no longer novel, but back at the beginning of the art form, surprises lurked around every corner. During the initial showings of basic silent movies, some people in the audience screamed in fear, reacting to what they saw as if it were happening in real life. Moviegoers were known to even leap out of their seats due to the trains on the screen. At that time, few people understood what motion pictures were, so audience members could easily be fooled. Today, people crowd into theatres for the latest 3D movies. Even older movies, such as the popular Star Wars series, are being re-released in 3D. Moviemakers are excited about the ability to involve the audience more directly in the story or film. In addition, theatres invest tens of thousands of dollars on high-quality audio systems so that everything from the safest whispers to the largest explosions sounds clear and realistic. Sound, dialogue, and music are used in combination not only with one another but also with the visual image. They can overlap and vary in intensity in a flexible and complex pattern with those high-quality audio systems. What will movies be like 100 years from now? Will audience be able to smell scents in the films, taste the food that characters are eating, or even become part of the stories themselves? Only time will tell. 8. What can we know about the motion pictures in early 20th century France? A. They were in color. B. They were the main form of entertainment. C. They greatly appealed to people then. D. They often had background music. 9. Why did the moviegoers leap out of their seats? A. Because the movies were too scary. B. Because they didn't see trains in real life. C. Because the old theaters were too crowded. D. Because audiences were unfamiliar with the movies. 10. Why do theatres spend a lot on high-quality audio systems? A. To re-release more old movies. B. To develop movie-making technologies. C. To improve movie-goers' experience. D. To make the explosions safe. 11. What's the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To explain how realistic movies are today. B. To tell something about future movie plans. C. To introduce the history of movie technology. D. To compare movie theatres over the last century. C 9. D 10. C 11. 由第一段中的“In early twentieth-century France, a new form of entertainment was becoming a hit—motion pictures. People crowded into theatres for short, silent, black-and-white films that showed everyday happenings, such as a train pulling into a station.”(20 世纪初,法国 一种新的娱乐形式正成为一种热门——电影。 由第二段中的“During the initial showings of basic silent movies, some people in the audience screamed in fear, reacting to what they saw as if it were happening in real life. Moviegoers were known to even leap out of their seats due to the trains on the screen. At that time, few people understood what motion pictures were, so audience members could easily be fooled.”(在最初放映 无声电影的时候,观众中的一些人吓得尖叫起来,对他们所看到的一切做出反应,就好像这 一切发生在现实生活中一样。 由第三段中的“Moviemakers are excited about the ability to involve the audience more directly in the story or film. In addition, theatres invest tens of thousands of dollars on high-quality audio systems so that everything from the safest whispers to the largest explosions sounds clear and realistic.”(甚至是一些老电影,比如《星球大战》系列电影也在 3D 中重新 上映,电影制作人对能够更直接地让观众参与到故事或电影中感到兴奋。 D Two vaccines(疫苗)developed by a Maryland company are showing promise in the fight against malaria(疟疾). One vaccine was 100 percent effective in preventing the deadly disease malaria. Malaria is a disease caused by parasites(寄生虫)and carried by mosquitoes. Parasites are organisms that live on or in an organism of another species and feed off it or get protection from it. Mosquitoes spread the disease to people by biting on their skin. The World Health Organization says there are 214 million cases of malaria each year. And the deadly disease kills over 400,000 people a year worldwide. People who have malaria often have a fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Serious complications happen, including death, when the disease is left untreated. The new vaccines work by preparing the immune system to fight the disease. Researchers do this by introducing live, but weakened, young parasites called sporozoites. They are injected into the body by infected mosquitoes. Both vaccines target Plasmodium Falciparum(恶性疟原虫),which is the most common and deadly form of the disease. One successful trail was carried out in Germany. Different amounts of the vaccine were injected into 27 healthy people who volunteered for the study. Another group of 15 was given a placebo, which is a substance given to a patient like a drug, but t has no physical effect on the person. Eight to 10 weeks after the last vaccine amount, both groups were then exposed to the parasites that carried the malaria. Stephen Hoffman is chief executive and scientific officer of Sanaria. He says the researchers were surprised by the results from nine of the people who received the highest vaccine amount. “We got 100% protection against malaria at ten weeks after the last amount of the vaccine. That is really beginning to look like something quite extraordinary and that's never been done before.” 12. What can we know about malaria? A. It is a disease that can't be treated. B It kills people when left untreated. C. It is a deadly disaster with a high death rate. D. It is a flu-like disease caused by mosquitoes. 13. How do the new vaccines function to fight malaria? A. By killing parasites in the mosquitoes. B. By getting rid of most of the mosquitoes. C. By injecting parasites into mosquitoes' body. D. By restarting the immune system of people's body. 14. How does Stephen Hoffman think of the experiment effect of the vaccine? A. Remarkable. B. Unpredictable. C. Unsatisfactory. D. Unreasonable. 15. Which section of a magazine is the text probably from? A. Science &technology. B. Education. C Lifestyle. D. Politics. B 13. D 14. A 15. 由第二段中的“People who have malaria often have a fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Serious complications happen, including death, when the disease is left untreated.”(患疟疾 的人经常发烧、发冷和患有流感样疾病。 由第三段中的“The new vaccines work by preparing the immune system to fight the disease.”(新疫苗的工作原理是让免疫系统准备好对抗这种疾病。) 由最后一段中的““We got 100% protection against malaria at ten weeks after the last amount of the vaccine. That is really beginning to look like something quite extraordinary and that's never been done before.””(“我们在最后一次接种疫苗后的十周内获得了 100%预防疟疾。 故选 A 项。 由第一段“Two vaccines(疫苗)developed by a Maryland company are showing promise in the fight against malaria(疟疾). One vaccine was 100 percent effective in preventing the deadly disease malaria.”(马里兰州一家公司开发的两种疫苗在抗击疟疾方面显示出了希望。 故选 A 项。 People-pleasers want everyone around them to be happy and they will do whatever is asked of them to keep it that way. ____16____. For some, saying “yes” is a habit; for others, it’s almost an addiction that makes them feel like they need to be needed. This makes them feel important and like they’re contributing to someone else’s life. ___17___. Not only does it put a lot of pressure and stress on you, but essentially you can make yourself sick from doing too much. In the worst case, you’ll wake up and find yourself depressed, because you’re on such overload because you possibly can’t do it all. Here’s a list of strategies to help you stop being a people-pleaser and finally say “no”. Think about it. Whenever someone asks you for a favor, it’s perfectly OK to say that you’ll need time to consider. _____18_____. It is also important to ask the person for details about the commitment. Ask yourself: Do I have the time to do this? How pressured am I going to feel? These questions are key because you need time to think of your must-do list and things you don’t want to do. ___19___. It’s tempting (诱人的) to want to defend your decision to say “no” to someone so they understand your reasoning. But this actually backfires. As soon as you start explaining, you give the other person lots of room to come back and say, “Oh, you can do that later,” “You can adjust your schedule” or “That’s not as important as what I’m asking.” Don’t apologize—if it’s not your fault. People-pleasers tend to be serial apologists. Pay attention to when you’re apologizing and consider if you’re really at fault. ____20____. Usually, the answer is “no”. A. Realize you have a choice. B. Don’t give a list of excuses. C. They put everyone else before themselves. D. Say what you’re thinking and what you want. E. People-pleasing can have serious risks in fact. F. Ask yourself if you’re responsible for the situation. G. This gives you the opportunity to think of you can help. C 17. E 18. G 19. B 20. 【16 题详解】 根据空格上句“People-pleasers want everyone around them to be happy and they will do whatever is asked of them to keep it that way. 【17 题详解】 根据空格上句“Not only does it put a lot of pressure and stress on you, but essentially you can make yourself sick from doing too much. 【18 题详解】 根据空格上句“Whenever someone asks you for a favor, it’s perfectly OK to say that you’ll need time to consider. 【19 题详解】 根据空格后句“It’s tempting (诱人的) to want to defend your decision to say “no” to someone so they understand your reasoning. But this actually backfires. 【20 题详解】 根据段落主旨句“Don’t apologize—if it’s not your fault. 根据空格上句“Pay attention to when you’re apologizing and consider if you’re really at fault. Holly Morrell will never forget the phone call that changed her life. They abandoned me too since I was still living with my mom. I leaned over and hugged my mom over the shoulders and tucked (把……塞入) my head in between her jaw and shoulder as I myself started getting teary eyed. She said, “I don’t want to accept it right away. That would be odd.” And as she finished saying this messenger was ringing and it was my elder sister calling. They talked for over two hours. And it was the best thing that I heard my sister who I haven’t met or heard from in four years, and my niece and nephew speaking words and full comprehensible sentences. The last time I saw them, they were so little, only one and three years old. Now, four years later, what will they be like? Maybe a lot taller? Maybe getting cuter?
