A 15-year-old Colorado high school student and young scientist who has used artificial
intelligence (AI) and created apps to address polluted drinking water, drug addiction and other social
problems has been named Time Magazine's first-ever "Kid of the Year".
Rao told The Associated Press in an interview from her home that the prize is "nothing that I
could have ever imagined. And I'm so grateful and just so excited that we're really taking a look at
the upcoming generation and our generation, since the future is in our hands. "
Time said Rao stood out for creating a global community of young innovators and inspiring
them to pursue their goals. Rao insisted that starting out small doesn't matter, as long as you're
passionate about it.
She told Time contributing editor Angelina Jolie in an interview that her science pursuits started
early as a way to improve social conditions. The drinking water crisis in Flint, Michigan, inspired
her work to develop a way to detect pollutants and send those results to a mobile phone, she said.
" I was like 10 when I told my parents that I wanted to research carbon nanotube (纳米管)
sensor technology at the Denver Water quality research lab, and my mum was like, "A what?" Rao
told Jolie. She said that work "is going to be in our generation's hands pretty soon. So if no one else
is gonna do it, I'm gonna do it. "
In a world where science is increasingly questioned or challenged, Rao insisted that its pursuit
is an act of kindness, the best way that a younger generation can better the world.
"We have science in everything we're involved in, and I think that's the biggest thing to put out
there, that science is cool, innovating is cool, and anybody can be an innovator, "Rao said. "Anybody
can do science. "
24. What did Rao think of the award she received?
A. It was a mark of social progress. B. It was a recognition of her work.
C. It was an inspiration to the youth. D. It was a title beyond her expectation
25. Why would Rao start to pursue science?
A. To encourage people to aim high. B. To pursue her passion for research.
C. To change the society for the better. D. To stop science from being
questioned.
26. Which word can best describe Rao?
A. Cool. B. Kind. C. Independent. D. Creative.
27. What's the purpose of the text?
A. To report a young genius. B. To introduce new inventions.
C. To improve social conditions. D. To present artificial intelligence.
C
Killer whales, or orcas, are known for their severe attacks on sea animals but they have never
posed a threat to humans. However, since late July, the normally social animals have been
intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
The strange behavior first surfaced on July 29, 2020, when a 46-foot boat was repeatedly
attacked for almost an hour by nine orcas, causing the boat to rotate(旋转) 180 degrees and having
its engine switched off. Since then, over 30 more similar incidents have been reported. On
September 23, 2020, Spain's government banned boats of less than 50 feet in length from sailing in
the 60-mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between Ferrol and the Estaca de Bares Cape, where the
attacks have been occurring.
Researchers across the world are trying to explain the orcas' behavior. Some believe it could be
a result of the overfishing of the bluefish tuna - the orcas' primary food source -which has left the
area's killer whales starving and unable to feed their babies. "I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I
think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages, "says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist
at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, US A. The environmentalists believe the
sudden increase in boat traffic and fishing activities, after months of absence due to restrictions on
human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.
However, Alfredo López, a biology professor in Galicia, Spain, thinks the attacks are defensive
measures the orcas adopted to protect themselves against boat injuries. The researcher came to this
conclusion after looking at the of the videos of a few incidents and noticing that two of the young
killer whales involved had serious injuries. Hopefully, the experts will be able to find a way to
restore the harmony between the animals and the humans soon.
28. What do we know about orcas in paragraph 1?
A. They are friendly to humans. B. They have changed their behavior.
C. They are famous for hunting skills D. They have met tough living
conditions.
29. Who hold(s) the idea that fishing activitie s caused the incidents?
A. Ken Balcomb. B. The environmentalists.
C. Alfredo López. D. Spain's government.
30. What does the underlined word "the agitation" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The attacks. B. Food shortages. C. The overfishing. D. Human
activities.
31. What might be a suitable title for this text?
A. How do killer whales attack humans?
B. Why Are Killer Whales attacking Boats?
C. How can we live in harmony with animals?
D. Why are boats banned from sailing on the sea?
D
US and Canadian researchers recently calculated the total amount of the world's groundwater
and estimated that it is equal to a lake 180 metres deep covering the entire Earth. This makes
groundwater the largest active freshwater resource on the planet. The team also investigated its age.
How did they do this?
Humans introduced a convenient time signature on the Earth when we started testing atomic(原
子的) weapons. This leaves a time stamp which can be found in water, rocks and living organisms.
By seeing if radioactivity(放射性) from atomic bomb testing was present in the groundwater, the
researchers could estimate that about 6% of this groundwater is younger than50 years old. If this
water was spread evenly over the continents, then there is just three metres depth of "modern"
groundwater spread equally over the continents.
It could be argued that if we use only this "modem" groundwater, then this is sustainable, as we
know that it has been replaced ( or recharged ) by natural processes over the last 50years. But how
quickly groundwater recharges changes over time.
Water has to reach the inside of rocks, either now or in the past. This means that the amount of
rainfall has to be more than the amount of water evaporating(蒸发) from the land surface, and more
than the amount of water used by all the plants. When this occurs, fresh water can recharge the
groundwater from either water "leaking" from the beds of rivers or from rainwater that passes
through the soil.
In many parts of the world we know that groundwater recharge varies due to natural climate
variability such as El Nino. Groundwater recharge will also change with global warming.
32. In order to know the age of groundwater, we can ________.
A. find its time stamp B. test atomic weapons
C. examine its freshness D. spread groundwater equally
33. What do people think of the supply of "modern" groundwater?
A. It's fresh. B. It's limited. C. It's vital. D. It's
sufficient.
34. What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Water evaporating. B. Water leaking from river beds.
C. Water getting into rocks. D. Water being used by all the plants.
35. What are the last three paragraphs mainly talking about?
A. Climate variability. B. Global warming.
C. Groundwater exploration. D. Groundwater sustainability.

Diversity comes in many forms: gender, race, age, culture, etc. All of these contribute to an
individual's unique experience of the world. Here are some reasons why it is significant in all aspects
of our lives.
1. Productivity
Bringing together people of various backgrounds lead to new ideas. 36 When tackling an
issue, wouldn't it be better to have more than one understanding approach, rather than everyone
contributing the same thoughts and conclusions?
2. Becoming a World Citizen
If you experience diversity in your everyday life, you will be regularly exposed to people,
cultures, traditions, and practices that are unlike your own. Not only will you improve your social
development, but you will also increase your understanding of the world. 37
3. Growing Acceptance
Promoting diversity is the first step to true acceptance. Through growing contact with, and
communication between new people, individuals may see that they may have more in common than
they thought. 38 And that is okay, too! Increasing familiarity with these differences can
facilitate acceptance.
4. Richer Life Experience
Diversity is colorful! What if everyone who surrounded you was exactly like you, in every way?
39 We need new ideas, views, and practices to stimulate and inspire us, to show us the way others
eat, celebrate, and love!
We must not forget to spread the word about the importance of diversity and to face the world
with a love and a celebration of our differences. 40
A. Where is the fun in that?
B. Or, they may still be remarkably different.
C. Everyone has their own way of viewing a problem.
D. This will prepare you to be a part of a global society.
E. Is diversity something we should fight for in all aspects of our lives?

Patrick never did homework. "Too boring, " he said. He played football and basketball and
tennis instead. His teachers told him, "Patrick! Do your homework or you won't learn a thing. "And
it's true. Sometimes he did feel like a fool. But what could he do? He hated homework
Then one day he found his cat playing with a little toy and he grabbed it away. To his surprise it
wasn't a toy at all, but a man of the tiniest size. He had a little wool shirt and a high tall hat much
like a witch's(女巫). He shouted, "Save me! Don't give me back to that cat. I'll promise you a wish. I
promise you that. "
Patrick couldn't believe how lucky he was! Here was the answer to all of his problems. So he
said, "Only if you do all my homework till the end of the term, that's 35 days. If you do a good
enough job, I could even get As. "
And true to his word, that little elf (精灵) began to do Patrick's homework. Except there was
one small problem. The elf didn't always know what to do and he needed help. "Help me! Help me!"
he'd say. And Patrick would have to help—in whatever way.
"I don't know this word, "the elf cried while reading Patrick's homework. "Get me a dictionary.
No, what's even better, look up the word and sound it out by each letter. "
When it came to maths, Patrick was out of luck. "What are times tables?" the elf screamed. "We
elves never need that. And addition and subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit down beside
me, you simply must guide me. Elves know nothing of human history. To them it's a mystery(秘密).
So the little elf, already a shouter, just got louder. "Go to the library, I need books. More and more
books. And you can help me read them too. "

1. 续写词数应为 150 左右

With College Entrance Examination approaching, many of us are under much pressure from
study and therefore have developed an unhealthy lifestyle, studying deep into night, rushing through
meals and taking little physical exercise, which is extremely harmful to our health.
To meet the challenges of the senior year, it's high time that we take action to say no to the
unhealthy lifestyle.
We are supposed to go to bed early and get up early and take meals regularly and slowly
enough. Furthermore, it is advised that we spare as much time as possible to work out.
第二节
As a matter of fact, every day in every way that little elf was a nag (喋喋不休的人)! Patrick
was working harder than ever and it was a drag! He was staying up nights, had never felt so weary,
and was going to school with his eyes puffed and bleary. Finally, the last day of school arrived and
the elf was free to go. As for homework, there was no more, so he quietly and slyly slipped out the
back door.
Patrick got his As. His classmates were amazed. His teachers smiled and were full of praise.
And his parents? They wondered what had happened to Patrick. He was now the model kid. He
cleaned his room, did his chores, cheerful and never rude, like he had developed a whole new
attitude. You see, in the end, Patrick still thought he’d made that tiny man do all his homework. But
I’ll share a secret just between you and me. It wasn’t the elf. Patrick had done it himself!
