We all know employees talk, and things can never remain totally secret. But a direct discussion
about salary details probably isn’t the best idea.
There are organizations that openly share salary information around the office. However, unless
all similar jobs pay the same rate, people advise that open salary concepts do not work well.
When companies have different employees on the same job and one of them is paid differently,
many unfairness issues surface. It can happen in any company that differentiates (区分) pay for any
reason like seniority and performance. You should run the risk of causing a distance between you
and your colleagues if they learn you earn more for what they think to be the same job.
The secret nature of your salary, in fact, can be a greater benefit to you. It creates an
opportunity for a manager to have a personal discussion with employees as to why they are being
paid what they are and how they can then move forward with confidence that they have developed a
“special” relationship with their supervisor (主管) on their individual issues, good and bad, without
involving others in the process.
If you learn that someone who holds a similar position earns a bigger paycheck, don’t panic.
First, do some due diligence to determine if you are being underpaid in general. Use the Internet
salary calculator, and also reach out to your out-of-office network to find out how people at other
companies are being compensated. Next, you’d better go to your boss and ask the reasons. Open a
rational dialog to understand what skills or experience you’ll need to improve your performance and
earn more recognition and financial rewards.
28. What could happen if your colleagues learned that you are paid more?
A. They might become less friendly to you. B. Your salary might be reduced soon.
C They might badly perform in their work. D. You might be given extra jobs.
29. What is the advantage of keeping salary information secret?
A. It inspires you to make greater progress in your work.
B. It warns you to work harder to make more money.
C. It gives the manager a chance to communicate with you.
D. It proves the manager treats all his employees equally.
30. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To tell about how to get along with the boss. B. To show how to keep silent about the
problem.
C. To urge employees to argue with the boss. D. To suggest ways to deal with the
problem.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Personal relationship. B. Salary secret.
C. Colleague pressure. D. Salary difference.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. B

Com has been a significant part in American food since before European arrival. After the Civil
War, grits(粗玉米粉), which are made out of corn, became a diet mainstay(支柱) because
water-powered mills turned up. They were relatively inexpensive and could be eaten with almost
anything, making it possible for everyone to enjoy.
Grits are usually cooked with water, cream and butter over the course of many hours. There can
be varied types of grits from smooth to grainy. There are even instant grits for those without the
hours to cook. Worth noting is that sugar is not typically added.
Grits can be served for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but they’re commonly used as a base,

presidents to blue-collar workers in a variety of ways, both in fine dining restaurants and oily
spoons.
Shrimp and grits is the most well-known dish incorporating grits, especially in coastal areas like
Charleston, South Carolina. It was originally a fisherman’s breakfast, a hearty meal before a long
day of work, and today, it’s found on menus throughout the nation.
Chefs have also become creative with the dish adding modem elements to the traditional.
Mashama Bailey has a foie gras(鹅肝酱) and grits dish at The Grey in Savannah, Georgia. Edward
Lee has prepared it like the porridge his Korean parents cooked during his growing up, but uses
Kentucky’s Wiesenberger grits. Nathalie Dupree has made her career on the dish with her cookbook

How to Grow Organic Tomatoes in a Container
Anyone who has seen tomatoes growing in a garden knows that they tend to be huge plants.
___36___ So the first thing to do when considering growing tomatoes in a pot is to find a suitable
variety.
After you find the perfect plant, it is time to plant it. In general, plastic or fiberglass pots are
best for growing tomatoes. They don’t dry out quickly. While tomatoes love heat, they don’t like
being dry. ___37___ Besides, tomatoes need to grow in a reasonably large pot. A pot must be 8
inches deep. That’s the absolute minimum. A 12- or 16-inch pot is even better.
___38___ Don’t use soil dug directly from the garden. It is too heavy for container gardens.
Compost (混合的) based soil, whether purchased or mixed from your special recipe, is nice. When
planting the tomato, put some soil in the bottom of the pot and set the plant in. After you have the
plant set at the proper level, fill in around it with soil. The soil should go up to about an inch below
the rim (边缘) of the pot to allow room for watering.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am Li Hua, a high school student. I am writing to draw your attention to the improper
behaviors among students in the reading rooms of the school library: making too much noise and
littering. As you know, it is difficult for readers to focus while some students are talking to each
other or making phone calls. Besides, a noisy and dirty environment is not only bad for our health
but also has a negative effect on our studying.
Therefore, in my opinion, some measures should be taken to solve these problems. First, put up
some signs that forbid such improper behaviors. Second, ask all the students to pick up their rubbish
when they leave.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
