When British musician Paul Barton performs in central Thailand lately, his energetic listeners
react wildly. Some pull his hair or jump on his piano. Others steal his music papers. The behavior
is normal, because these crowds are truly wild—wild monkeys to be exact.
Barton plays often to the animals in Lopburi, an area known for its populations of wild
monkeys. He has played at four sites, including at an ancient Hindu temple, a store and an old movie
theater. The pianist hopes the music shows bring calm to the animals during the Corona Vims Crisis
in 2020. The disease has caused problems for the monkeys, too. They are hungry. The restrictions
(限制)on tourism mean fewer people come to see the monkeys and feed them.
The monkeys quickly surround Barton when he plays Greensleeves, Beethoven's For Alice and
Michael Nyman's Diary of Love. Some of the creatures sit on his chair, while others climb up his
body and touch his head. But, Barton keeps his attention on his performance, even as a small
monkey runs over his hands on the instrument. Other monkeys take control of his music papers.
"It's a wonderful opportunity to see the wild animals just being themselves. I was surprised to
find that they were actually eating the music as I was playing it. I wasn't going to let those things
distract from the project which is to play the music for these wonderful creatures. We need to make
an effort to make sure that they can eat properly so that they will be calmer and will not be
aggressive. "said Barton.
The monkeys are Barton's latest animal fans. Past wildlife audiences included elephants living
in special protected areas. Barton hopes to raise awareness of the monkeys, hunger. At the same time,
he hopes to study their behavior as they react to classical music.
4. Why did the musician play to the wild monkeys?
A. To see the wild animals just being themselves.
B. To study their behavior as they react Io music.
C. To raise money for the wild monkeys' hunger.
D. To reduce the bad effect of COV1D-19 on them.
5. What kind of music did the musician play?
A. Contemporary music. B. Classical music.
C. Country music. D. Popular music.
6. What does the underlined phrase “eating the music" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Stealing his music papers. B. Eating his music papers.
C. Disturbing his performance. D. Enjoying his playing.
7. What can we infer from the text?
A. Wild monkeys like to play with the musician.
B. People will start to protect the wild monkeys.
C. The COV1D-19 has damaged much to the world.
D. Music can make the wild animals more active.

Though it is not good for us to expose ourselves to sunlight for too long, allowing ourselves
appropriate amount of exposure to sunlight gives us many benefits and affects us in a number of
ways.
Without the sun, life would not have developed. It gives us energy and heats our world. The sun
gives us light and thus in turn we are able to see the beautiful colors in our world. It makes us feel
good when we feel the warmth of its rays on our shoulders. We store the energy from the sun to help
build and heat our houses.
Without sunlight we would not be able to survive. Sunlight gives balance. All living things live
in a food chain and at the beginning of the food chain conies the plant which absorbs sunlight and
transforms light energy into chemical energy ,which will then be absorbed by another life to be
turned into a new kind of energy and so on.
One of the benefits that we can get from sunlight is that we can receive vitamin D from sunlight.
It helps us to keep a healthy body, control the amount of minerals in the body, which is needed to
help keep our bones and teeth in good condition and helps to keep a well-balanced mind.
Different places on the earth receive varying degrees of sunlight, which will decide the region's
climate. For example, the farther away it is from the equator (赤道),the sharper the angle of the
sun's rays that reach it, which means that sunlight coverage will be more spread out, and receive less
heat than lower latitude(纬度)areas nearer the equator.
8. Why does sunlight give balance?
A. It helps to pass energy. B. It helps to absorb energy.
C. It helps to form new lives. D. It helps to protect new lives.
9. In which aspect can sunlight assist people?
A. Reducing the amount of minerals. B. Improving the nerve system.
C. Keeping the bones and teeth healthy. D. Obtaining a well-balanced diet.
10. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Which place is the hottest. B. How sunlight affects the climate.
C. How to get more sunlight. D. How much sunlight a place needs.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Avoiding Being Exposed to Sunlight Too Long
B. Varying Degrees of Sunlight on the World
C. Benefits of Sunlight on the World
D. Making Full Use of Sunlight

我们保持骨骼和牙齿的健康。故选 C。

Drinking coffee as soon as one wakes up from a night's sleep greatly affects metabolism (新陈
代谢) and blood sugar responses. Scientists published this in the British Journal of Nutrition,
In the study, the UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take part in three different
overnight experiments. In the first two scenes, participants were given a sugary drink upon waking
first from a normal night's sleep, and then again after a greatly disturbed night's sleep. In the third,
their sleep was similarly, but they were given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before having the
sugary drink.
Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary drinkin each experiment.
Results showed that one night of disturbed sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar
responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee
consumed before breakfast increased the blood sugar response by around 50 percent.
By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers found that our bodies, ability
to break down our food healthily is completely improved. Examining the effects of broken sleep and
morning coffee through a range of different metabolic markers, researchers found that, while one
night of poor sleep had a limited effect on metabolism, drinking coffee before breakfast could have a
negative effect on blood sugar control.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink
coffee-the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee is. This study is important and has far-reaching
health influences, and it indeed shakes some coffee drinkers. Up to now we have had limited
knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar
control, so we have a long way to go. "said Professor James Bette, co-director of the Centre for
Nutrition at the University of Bath.
12. How did the UK researchers get the result of the experiment?
A. By theoretical analysis. B. By comparative experiments.
C. By doing questionnaires. D. By consulting journals.
13. What can we learn from the experiment?
A. A poor night sleep surely affects blood sugar responses.
B. Drinking coffee after breakfast does much harm to health.
C. Having strong drinks has a good effect on one's metabolism.
D. Drinking coffee at different time has different effects on health.
14. What does James Bette think of the study?
A. It makes no sense. B. It is limited and blind.
C. It remains to be continued. D. It is particular and precise.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Harms of drinking coffee before breakfast.
B. What weakens ones' blood sugar responses.
C. How much coffee one should drink a day.
D. The effective procedure for blood sugar control.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A
