I was lucky to have an interview with a famous international bank after graduation. I really appreciated this
chance. So 1 spent a lot of time preparing very carefully I prepared for all the possible questions ahead. As a result,
1 got the job. While my classmates were still struggling to get a job, 1 had succeeded in getting one, which made
me feel very proud of myself.
After one month of hard training, Today was my first day at work to show the results of the training. I got up
as usual, but I decided to skip doing exercise as I did not want to take the risk of arriving at the office late on my
first day. I went through my morning routine and spent a lot of time deciding what to wear. I definitely wanted to
make a great impression right from the start. Finally, I settled on the white suit with a tie.
I waved to say goodbye to my mother and set off cheerfully towards the bus stop. But l Saw a bus leaving the
stop just as I turned around the corner. Now I would have to wait for another 15 minutes, even though time was
very precious. I stood there patiently. 15 minutes passed and then 30 minutes, and there was no sign of the bus.
Now what could 1 do? I had to reach the office on time. I saw a motorcycle approaching, but as I tried to stop it, the
driver sped on without even a glance. It was then that a car stopped near me and a man waved to me. He said,
“Aren’t you working at the bank at Nariman Point? My office is in the same building. Can I give you a ride?”
I was uncertain at first but then forced myself to get in as I was going to be late. Gradually, I realized that we
were not on the familiar route to my office. I asked the man to stop the car, but he did not listen to me and told me
to shut up.

【答案】Paragraph 1.
I had no other option but to keep my mouth shut. I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. I forgot all I had
learned from the training about measures to deal with an emergency. But to my surprise, the man finally stopped the
car in front of the bank building, after taking another shorter route. I didn’t expect that I would be able to reach the
bank safely and punctually. I asked the man who he was.
Paragraph 2.
He told me that he was my boss. All that had happened was just a test. Unfortunately, I didn’t pass it. He said that if
I was intelligent enough to be selected and employed by an international bank, I should not have taken such a risk
and trusted a stranger offering a ride. Although I had prepared for everything, I still lost the precious chance to
work. From this experience, I realized that the thing that matters most is whether you can apply what you have
learned to your job. Moreover, success is not only in the interview, but also in the details of life.

Shanti wanted the wooden doll in Ramu’s toy shop and told her best friend, Jodi about it. Jodi wondered if she
could afford it.
Shanti smiled. “I asked my mom if I could make jasmine garlands(花环) and sell them at my aunt’s stand in
the market.” Jodi thought it was a good idea.
Early the next morming, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside Shanti’s house. Delicate white flowers
surrounded them with fresh scent. They picked blossoms with their fingers and then sat under a mango tree, tying
up the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already see herself hugging that beautiful doll.
“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll.” said Shanti.
Jodi shook her head. Her family was low on money that week. She had to use her money to pay for Kiran’s
medicine. Kiran was Jodi’s little brother. Then Jodi picked up her garlands.“My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet
you at the market.”
Shanti spent the afternoon selling garlands alone. By early evening, Shanti had sold all her flowers.
On the way home, Shanti saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. She was late because she had to
watch Kiran while her mother was away.
“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.
Jodi shook her head. “He’s too sick to go out. He coughs and coughs.”
Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now.The market would be closing soon.
Shanti looked at the purse tightly held in her hand. It was supposed to be for the beautiful doll she’d been
dreaming of for long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here. Keep this for the medicine.”

Ring a Bell
Ms. Tracy looked up from her yellow notebook and cleared her throat. The noise in the class died down as we
turned toward her. "We're going to help a charity to collect money by ringing a bell. Each of you will ring it for four
hours," she announced. As the words left her lips, complaints could be heard around the room. Unwillingly, I dug
for my planner and look notes. Four hours of ringing a stupid bell. Four hours that I could be studying for the SAT.
Was this supposed to be a joke? I joined the students around the table and signed up for 1he first day of break-to get
it over with.
A few weeks later, I was standing next to the big blue-and-white Walmart. There was another guy holding a jar
across from me. Great, I was going to be stuck here ringing a bell with a guy who was trying to get donations for
another charity. To top it off, it was only about 4.4℃.
Slowly, I put on the red dress bearing the symbol of ow charity. I hoped that I already spent two minutes doing
that, Ring! Ring! A group of older women came up with their walking sticks to drop in some change. А man with а
broad-cimmеd bat came by and put some coins in. I checked my phone. Just 10 minutes had passed.
A strong bitterly-cold wind blew against my freezing face. I was starting to regret ignoring my mom's advice
to wear a scarf. I looked up, wishing that time would pass more quickly. A few birds swept around the poles. The
sky was gently blue. Palm trees waved in the cold wind. How comfortable it might be to curl(蜷缩)up with a hot
cup of tea and a book on the cozy sofa. Then another ring brought me back to reality.

【答案】From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me. I saw his
unbalanced shoulders and awkward figure. His hair was a mess and his shirt was dirty. I stopped ringing the bell,
wondering what he was going to do. He pulled some change out of his worn pocket and reached towards the bucket.
I couldn't help but say, "Thank you, sir." He turned to smile. The money he donated was not a lot, but it was clearly
a lot to him. This act of charity, though not much, was worth so much more than donations given by those who
were better off.
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily. The bell rang so merrily that it attracted more
people. I broadly smiled at everyone who approached me, feeling me shameful inside about my unwillingness and
resistance when given the task. It was still chilly but I was bathed in the sunshine of kindness. Many say that these
days people are becoming more and more selfish. I say that whoever believes that needs to go and ring a bell for a
charity as I did

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The
envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some
information. Then I saw the date-1990, and the signature-Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter.
The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, “Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever
had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two
years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him,” she said and tears began to well up
in her eyes. “Mother is waiting for him to come back home.”
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet,
and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, “Yes, that's mine! It
must have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon.”
“I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet.” I said. The smile on his face suddenly
disappeared. He asked, “You read that letter?” “Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read.” I replied. He
suddenly became excited. “Beatrice? You know where she is? How is she? Please tell me,” he begged. “She's fine.
She has been looking for you.” I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, “Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her.”
Henry and I took the elevator (电梯) down to Beatrice's room. I walked over to her. “Beatrice,” I said softly,
pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. “Do you know the man?”

Some of my earliest memories involve silting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from
the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys would always occupy
the same spot on the table every time. It was as if he could see invisible lines drawn specifically for these things,
not a centimetre more or less.
Dad's comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older
than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five this ordinary task brought me such joy. I would excitedly tum the
tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would
proudly return die comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school.
That was when things started to change. Dad's business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting
shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to - just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it
was always late and I'd already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn't he listen to Mum and just stick to his old
job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come
home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Today, I'm no longer a kid. Now 28, I ’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started
to get back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me continued.

_____________________________________________________________
【答案】Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into
his study. When I turned to leave, he said: “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb? It's been a while since I
last cleaned.” It hit me then why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy. That routine meant that
my dad was home early to spend the evening with Mum and I. It meant he would watch TV with us or play a few
video games with me. It meant a happy and loving family.
When I passed the clean comb back to Dad, I noticed the wrinkles next to his eyes. They are more noticeable
when he smiles, but his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for
his family. Dad carefully places his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still organizes his personal
items in the same care fill way. I guess some things never change. And for that. I'm glad.

I got up at 4 am to receive a call from my daughter who needed my help to get home from the snowy mountain.
After I helped her get a taxi, I noticed I was out of cigarettes, so I went to the gas station up the street to purchase
some. There I saw a young man wrapped in a thin blanket, trying to keep out of the snow. I went in and bought my
cigarettes.
As I walked out of the station, this young man asked me for a cigarette. I pulled out one, gave him and left. I
just went forward a few steps and suddenly I realized that I should do something for him. I returned and asked him
if he wanted a hot coffee. Obviously he couldn’t hide his eagerness to get one and said “yes, please”. Again I went
in the station and bought him an extra large cup.
When I went back home, the pitiful look of the poor guy being out in the cold flashed before my eyes. Without
hesitation I grabbed my warm coat and hurried to the guy. Helping him put on the coat, I told him there was a
shelter nearby where he could ask for help. I asked him to promise me he would do it.
At about 6 o’clock, I got home. Seeing my daughter arrive safely and get ready for bed, I rested my heavy
body on the sofa wondering about the guy at the gas station. So I made a call to the shelter and told the nice girl on
the phone that there was a guy out in the cold. Told that they had one or two beds left, I quickly got into my car and

Ten years later, I received a strange call. I didn't know the number, and I didn't recognize the sound. The man
opposite said, "Do you remember me?" I was embarrassed because I couldn't remember anything." You helped me
through a cold winter ten years ago." He said. I had a light. "It's you. How have you been?" I enthused. "I'm living a
good life now and I don't have to be hungry and cold anymore." It's warm to think of that winter," he said,“Thank
you for helping me and giving me hope. I have set up several shelters to help more people like me that winter,

Most young kids are very self-centered most of the time. It’s like their brain meters are stuck on “selfish.” This
certainly described me, until I met my dear grandmother.
My father had been born in Japan, and he had many old, old photographs of the palatial (宫殿般的) estate that
had belonged to his family through many generations. He told me stories of gorgeous rooms full of golden furniture
and silk wall papers. He also described magnificent gardens, full of the sweet scents of exotic flowers and the
gentle thin stream of graceful fountains.
From all these, I figured my grandmother must be rich. I had never met her before she came from Japan, but at
eight, I reasoned that if I were nice to her, she would take me back to Japan to live in luxury. It was a good plan, I
thought, and I vowed to spend time with my grandmother so she would grow to love me and want me to
accompany her upon her return.
We went to pick her up at the airport. “There she is!” my father called. I expected to see some royal
kimono-clad (穿着和服的) creature like I’d seen in pictures. Instead, I saw a tiny woman with silver hair, wearing
an ordinary blue suit. She did not look wealthy to me. Still, I vowed to be attentive, to make myself indispensable
to her during her stay.
To get closer to her, I flattered her into telling me stories about old Japan. She enjoyed making needlecraft
with delicate designs, and as she worked, she wove tales of Japanese legends and history as delicate and beautiful
as the designs she created. I listened, fascinated. Her words were a mix of the two languages, so I didn’t completely
understand everything at first. Interestingly, however, as her English improved, so did my understanding of
Japanese.

【答案】One possible version
No one spoke of her going back, and I was like an ant on a hot griddle. But I was anxious to commence my
life of Japanese luxury, so one evening I worked up my courage. “When you go back to Japan, grandma, will you
take me?” I asked timidly. Though a bit surprised, she looked up from her embroidery, her eyes peeking lovingly at
me. “No, I live here now. But why do you want to leave?” So I told her about those stories. She smiled, stroking my
head, and explained. Her great grandfather did have much wealth, but the war destroyed everything. Now that
grandfather had passed away, she wished to remain here with family.
My dreams of a luxurious life had been broken. At first so disappointed was I that I even locked myself in the
room, crying for quite a while. Then suddenly the fact that grandma was staying with us swept my sadness away. I
had tried to make her love me so that I could join her in Japan. I soon understood that I didn't need the wealth of
Japan. My grandmother had given me far greater riches right here at home.

It's quite impressive to see Canada geese flying into the clouds. They live to be around 25 years old and are
very loyal. They never forget their first home. No one knows this more than my family.
In 2000, when I was seven, my parents and I came back from a T-ball game one late spring afternoon. To our
surprise, two adult geese and a baby goose were in our driveway (车库前的私 人车道).The adults were shocked
by us and flew away, but their baby was too young to fly and couldn't follow. We are no strangers to the ways of
wildlife, so we knew to avoid contact with the baby, hoping he could join his parents.
Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could
happen. It was clear that the baby needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we brought
him onto our back porch (门廊)and set up a wire fence to enclose and protect him.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning. And then another morning. And another. Each day,
we tried eagerly to get the baby back to his parents, who kept coming to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though,
and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. The baby goose had clearly decided we were his new family
and we gave him a name - Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫)noise,
nonstop.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed. Peeper slept on our back
porch in typical goose fashion. Every day, my dad would clear his droppings with water and throw him up into the
air, so he could fly a loop around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.
Paragraph 1:
One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop. But this time, Peeper just
flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. It was dark, and we were worried. We looked for him for days calling his
name, but he didn’t come back. We hoped he went off on his natural way. Again, days turned into weeks and weeks
turned into months, then years. I missed Peeper. I would call for him every time I saw a group of geese flying by in
V-formation. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a happy memory for family.
Paragraph 2:
It came as a shock 20 years later when an aging adult goose made his way back to my yard. At first, I thought
it was just another goose. And yet, something about him seemed strangely familiar to me. The goose came back
repeatedly. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door and sleeping
in our back porch. Besides this goose responded to the name Peeper. Much to my surprise my old friend returned,
20 years later.

Grady and his family go camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
Having planned the camp long, the family finally decided the destination --- the Great National Forest. With
food, necessity and cookers loaded onto the car, the family squeezed into the car. The car door closed, heat was shut
outside.
In the car, Jared, Grady's younger brother was playing with a toy dinosaur, making great noise. Grady's mother
talked excitedly with his father. On settling in the car, Grady put on the earphone and turned on the music. He
neither wanted to join his brother nor joined any talk. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they
headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed the car door.
“This will be a lengthy week,“ he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground.
Hundreds of tall and green fir trees, some as tall as church towers, covered the mountainside like a green carpet.
The sun would be setting soon. Grady thought maybe the heat wouldn't be unbearable. But actually now in the
mountain, the hot stickiness of July was closely attached to him.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family stuck to every summer. His father liked cooking over an
open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared liked
to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of bug pictures that he had pinned to the walls in his half
of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and proof that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp - two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started
preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep
enough to swim in.

【答案】As Grady got close to the stream, an adorable bear cub caught his eye. Though Grady didn’t like animals,
he couldn’t resist such a lovely bear cub measuring no more than two feet tall with a cute face. It was playing pretty
joyfully at the edge of the stream. So absorbed was the bear cub in playing that it wasn’t aware that someone was
approaching. Driven by curiosity, Grady walked on tiptoe, moving closer to have a look at it. Suddenly he heard a
sound behind him.
Turning around, he saw an angry bear moving swiftly towards him. Shocked and dumb, Grady was rooted
onto the ground for seconds, and then dashed to their camp desperately, shouting for help in the meantime.
Fortunately, Grady’s father heard the shout in time to come to his assistance. To their surprise, realizing the danger
was away, the furry giant stopped chasing and returned to the stream, picking up her baby, and holding it in arms
tightly. In the distance, attracted by the noise, Jared and his mother were trying to take a photo of the bear cub and
its mother.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been
some talk of COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒)on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going
about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防):We
washed our hands with soap , did not share food and had no significantly close contact.
A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt
some mild symptoms(症状)for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On
the following day, started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom
away from the rest of my family. The next morning. I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized
that I might have caught the virus from our friend.
At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head
of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had
been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care
center located five minutes' drive from my house. The result made my heart sank — I was also tested positive, and
the local hospital wasn't equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay
at home and quarantine (隔离)myself.
Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed
symptoms , I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in
food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact
with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

【答案】We decided to call everyone we had been in contact with over the course of the past week. Megan insisted
that we should let them know that I had tested positive. Hard as it was to inform people that we might have given
them the coronavirus, it was the responsible thing to do. To our pleasant surprise, all of our friends showed their
understanding and support upon hearing the news. To cheer us up, one of my wife's best friends even baked a cake
with the letters "Stay strong" on it and delivered it to our front door.
Though worried about the seriousness of the virus. I knew I had to be brave. I made sure to get plenty of rest
and did some exercise to stay as healthy as I could. I also managed to ease the worries of Megan and our kids
during our quarantine by spending more time doing online video-chats with them. Within the following week, my
fever started to fade and I could feel my head clearing. The next test showed a cheering result. It came back
negative. Had it not been for the love and care from those around me, I wouldn't have made it.
