A A new guidebook showcasing Hainan, China's southernmost province, to English-speaking readers was launched on Sept. 9 at The Commercial Press head office in Beijing. Produced by the award-winning international team of writers and editors behind The World of Chinese, this book Hainan: Jade Cliffs to Ocean Paradise dives deep into the natural, cultural and humanistic sides of an island lately associated with retirees and real estate. "Most travel guides stop at telling you where and how to visit," said Chu Dandan, chief editor of The World of Chinese, at the book's launch event. "Our book tells you why you should visit." What moves readers are "more than just sea and coconuts," Chu said, "but the people and the stories in between." From Hainan's famous beach resorts to its backcountry interior, the book's writers went across the province in search of little-told tales — trekking(跋涉) up its primeval(原始的) hills and through its rainforests, sipping tea and coffee with locals, visiting the homes of fishermen and ethnic minorities and discovering the passions of marine archaeologists, conservationists and surfers. These personal experiences and first-hand conversations are reflected in each of the book's chapters on Hainan's ecology, history, culture, leisure, food, sports and economy. These topics are then brought to life by original photographs, hand-drawn maps, interviews with native authors and scholars and profiles on colorful individuals and communities. "One of the things I was not expecting to find was a quaint little fishing village. Inevitably, modem elements permeate the beauty of ancient elegance. The village has been quietly half-occupied by a growing modem surfing community," Sam Davies, one of the writers, told the audience about visiting the village of Houhai in Sanya. "I was able to talk to some locals and others about how the village has changed, what it has meant for people's lives, and how surfing is just starting to develop in China," Davies said. "Our aim is to create something that will go far," Gu Qing, general secretary of The Commercial Press, said at the book launch. "I believe Hainan's development will exceed even the predictions in this book, and we hope this book and Hainan will go out into the world together." For more information about the book, please leave messages below. 1. Why is Hainan: Jade Cliffs to Ocean Paradise different from other books? A. It tells you where and how to visit. B. D. A biography. B Twenty years ago, I became involved in pet therapy (疗法) work with our Angel. As she matured and went through professional training, we realized that she would be good at this new job. Angel is ten now and works every week. She visits two hospitals, providing day care for the elderly, and our library's PAWS for Reading program. At the library, six to ten dogs lie on the floor, and the kids pick a book to read to a dog. After they finish, they get a card with the dog's picture and history. Angel also helps out at a special-needs camp. She is so popular that everywhere we go people recognize her, especially the kids she has worked with. We have seen some very special things through our pet therapy work. I brought Angel to our local hospital to visit a woman who was completely unable to move the right side of her body from a stroke (中 风). One day, my husband, Jack, got Angel up into a chair next to the woman's bed, asking her if she wanted to give Angel a treat. She nodded. Angel gently took the treat. Then the woman raised her right hand and started petting Angel. Her friend couldn't believe her eyes. After that, every time we saw the woman, she lifted her left hand. We'd tell her she had to use her right hand, and she would. Next, you'll fall in love with this woman's story of rearing her own Angel later in her family and why she calls it the best decision she ever made. 4. Who is Angel? A. A pet trainer. B. A hospital carer. C. A therapy dog. D. The author's kid. 5. What does Angel usually do? A. Save seriously ill people. B. Pay visits to kids in hospital. C. Protect the elderly in their homes. D. Help children at a special camp. 6. Why was the woman's friend astonished? A. The woman moved her right hand. B. The woman treated Angel. C. Angel helped the woman recover. D. Angel got along with the woman. 7. What does the underlined word "rearing" in the last paragraph mean? A. Accompanying. B. Raising. C. Assisting. D. Training. C Time famine (饥荒), a term refers to the universal feeling of having too much to do but not enough time to deal with those demands. Spending money on time-saving purchases may protect you from effects time famine can have on your happiness, suggests a new study of which Ashley Whillans served as a lead author. Whillans has experienced that recently, who was trying to move to a new city for a new job, and felt there weren't enough hours in the days leading up to her move. "Then I have groceries delivered to my house. I have someone that I don't know move away my boxes, which brings up a whole bunch of feelings. I honestly think, if it wasn't for doing this research and the move, I might have had some concern about those purchases," Whillans says. "It requires forward planning and mental abilities to think forward. But that indeed reduces negative effects of feeling stressed for time." The new study included self-reported data on 6, 271 adults of various income levels from various countries. The researchers found that, regardless of their levels, spending money on buying time was associated with greater life satisfaction and less anxiety. On the surface, the study may seem like it's offering a solution only for the affluent, but it also points out how time famine and buying time influence us all. "I think our research actually flies in the face of the prejudgment on time-saving purchases," says Elizabeth Dunn, a co-author of the study. "Sometimes when people imagine time-saving services maybe what they're picturing is a housekeeper, maids, and a gardener, but what we're talking about is that just spending $ 40 makes a difference." "Actually, the thing that surprised me most from our findings is how few people actually spend their money in a way that we would classify as being time-saving, even when they have the ability and when doing so may benefit overall wellbeing and life satisfaction," Dunn says. She adds they planned to conduct follow-up studies on the phenomenon. "I believe we can figure it out." 8. What has Whillans learned from her recent experience? A. Asking strangers for help is uneasy. B. Buying time improves mental abilities. C. Forward planning is a must for researchers. D. Saving time by spending money is worthwhile. 9. What does "affluent" underlined in paragraph 3 mean? A. Busy. B. Wealthy. C. Anxious. D. Public. 10. What will the researchers study next? A. Measures to deal with time famine. B. Ways to persuade people to buy time. C. People's opinions on time-saving services. D. Reasons people are unwilling to buy time. 11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. Buy time — A Common Phenomenon B. Time Famine — We All Feel It C. Buy time — Increase Your Happiness D. Time Famine — No Longer a Problem D Cigarettes aren't just harmful when they're being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24 hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine (尼古丁) that an actively burning cigarette would produce. While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out, an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later. "I was absolutely surprised," says environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). "The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter." To measure emissions(排放) from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2, 100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends were sealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so. After setting the room's temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays (烟灰缸) out for days at a time, especially in the heat. 12. What do the researchers say about cigarette ends? A. They contain little nicotine. B. They produce no nicotine 5 days later. C. They give off nicotine for days. D. They create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes. 13. What do Poppendieck's words suggest? A. First-hand smoking does most harm. B. The findings are within his expectation. C. Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors. D. Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored. 14. Which word best describes the authors attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days? A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Unconcerned. D. Puzzled. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Used Cigarette Ends Release Harmful Chemicals B. Cigarettes Are More Harmful While Being Smoked C. Research Found Reasons for Cigarette Ends' Harm D. Cigarette Ends Produce More Chemicals in the Heat Many of us make it our New Year decision to get more active—but you don't have to spend a fortune in gyms. __16___ But by switching that plan for these following ideas, you can increase your activity and bank balance. The ten-year-old was on a camping trip at McKinney Falls State Park with his mom, Kelley, his dad, Stacey, and his brothers, Ben, eight, and Willy, two. Around 11 a.m., Sammy's mother and little brother Ben dropped the boat into Onion Creek, a river travelling through the park's 750 acres, and went in for a short trip. Sammy and Willy accompanied their dad to Upper Falls, which marks the point where Onion Creek falls 12 feet over a rock ledge (岩架).At the top of the waterfall, a pathway made of white stones crosses the river bed. Below is a swimming hole, 20 feet deep in some places. With his father watching from the rocks above, Sammy jumped in. He was a good swimmer — he'd been on the swim team in his hometown of Cypress, Texas. Sammy played in the water for a while, eventually pulling himself out and onto a large warm rock and watching a group of children walk through the river bed above. They were summer campers from Austin who were headed back to the visitors' parking lot after a morning hike. As the kids passed Stacey and Willy, a tiny five-year-old girl reached down to grab a water bottle and lost her balance. In an instant, she was swept over the falls. "A girl went over the waterfall!" Stacey shouted. Sammy caught a glance of the girl's arm and the top of her dark head as the roiling currents pushed her into the low area beneath the rock ledge, hiding her from the crowd above. She struggled in the deep water. "I'm shocked and afraid at this point," Sammy says now. His father, with Willy under one arm, walked toward the edge of the waterfall to try to locate the girl, but Sammy was the one within striking distance. "You have to get her out of there!" Stacey yelled down to him. Paragraph 1: The ten-year-old was nervous and took a few seconds to consider the situation.____________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Soon, someone came and pulled both kids away from the water.________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 答案以及解析 第一部分 阅读理解 第一节 A 答案:1-3 CAC 解析:1. Most travel guides stop at telling you where and how to visit," said Chu Dandan, chief editor of The World of Chinese, at the book's launch event. "Our book tells you why you should visit." Inevitably, modem elements permeate the beauty of ancient elegance. The village has been quietly half-occupied by a growing modem surfing community For more information about the book, please leave messages below. At the library, six to ten dogs lie on the floor, and the kids pick a book to read to a dog"及其他内容可推断出, Angel 是一只治疗犬。故选 C。 5. Angel also helps out at a special-needs camp"可知,Angel 也经常在营 地帮助有特殊需要的儿童。 6. 根据第三段中的"a woman who was completely unable to move the right side of her body from a stroke (中风)"可知,这位女士因为中风右半边身体完全瘫痪了,再结合后面的"Then woman raised her right hand and started petting Angel"可知,这位女士的右手居然能动了,这让她的 朋友难以置信。 7. But that indeed reduces negative effects of feeling stressed for time"可知,Whillans 从她最近的经历中懂得了花钱节省 时间是值得的。 9. 画线词后面提到"但它也指出了时间荒和购买时间是如何影响我们所有人的",根据转 折关系可知,the affluent 应指少数一类人,再结合下文中的"what they're picturing is a housekeeper, maids, and a gardener, but what we're talking about is that just spending $ 40 makes a difference"可推知, 当提到花钱来节省时间时,人们可能会认为这是适合富人的解决办法,affluent 表示"富裕的"。 10. Actually, the thing that surprised me most from our findings is how few people actually spend their money in a way that we would classify as being time-saving" "She adds they planned to conduct follow-up studies on the phenomenon"可知,研究人员下一步将关注人们不愿 意购买时间的原因。 11. While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out, an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later"可知,烟熄灭后,尼古丁的浓度在五天以后仅下降一半,也就是说熄 灭的烟蒂好几天都会释放尼古丁。 故选 C。 13. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter"可知,尽管人们很关注一手烟、二手烟对健康的影响,现在也关注 了三手烟对健康的影响,但当谈到烟蒂对健康的影响时,情况就并非如此了。 When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates"可知,温度高时,烟蒂释放有害的化学物质 的速度更快,再根据"This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays(烟灰缸)out for days at a time, especially in the heat"可知,这个发现可能会打消那些人好几天尤其是在高温情况下都 放着烟灰缸不管的念头。 故选 A。 根据下文的"like opening an umbrella or watering a plant"可知,此处表示这些发明用复杂的 系统来完成简单的(simple)任务,比如打开雨伞或者浇灌植物。 23.根据下文的"the soap finally dropped right into Caitlin's waiting hands"可知,2020 年比赛的任务改 成了"让一块肥皂(soap)落在某人的手上"。 24.根据下文的"at school" "11-year-old Caitlin and her 13-year-old brother Ben"可知,参赛者大多是孩 子(children)。 25. But with schools closing... to send in videos of the machines to compete"可知,比赛规则 发生改变,之前必须本人到学校制作机器。in person "亲自,本人";in private "私下地";in advance "提前";in theory "理论上,从理论上来说"。 26.根据上文的"to slow the spread of the virus"以及下文的"In the video submitted"可知,组织者调整了 (adjusted)比赛规则。 27. They use complex systems... watering a plant" 和下文的" "The machine still must complete the task in 10 to 20 steps"可知,此处表示有一项规则继续存在(即保持不变)。remain"剩余, 继续存在"。 29.根据下文讲到的兄妹俩制作自己的机器可知,此处表示令人赞叹的参赛作品,entry 在该句中意 为"参赛作品"。 30.根据上文的"After six hours and 106" 和下文的"the soap finally dropped right into Caitlin's waiting hands"可知,在历经 6 个小时,106 次尝试后,他们成功了,肥皂最终恰好落到了 Caitlin 的手中。 attempt "(为超越某事物的)尝试,努力"。 31.参见上题解析。get it"了解,明白";make it"获得成功";take it"假定,以为";beat it"立即走开"。 32.根据语境可知,他们在提交的视频中展示机器工作的过程。 review"审查,检讨,回顾"; demonstrate"示范,演示,展示"。 33.根据下文的"an important protection against diseases" "they must do over and over again"可知,健康 专家说反复洗手可以预防疾病。 repeatedly"一再,多次,反复地"。 34.根据常识和空后的"they're thinking about a deadly virus each time they wash their hands"可知,孩子 们每次洗手,想到致命的病毒就可能感到害怕(afraid)。 35.此处表示有趣的比赛可能让孩子们对他们必须反复做的事(即洗手)有好的感觉。create"造成,引 起,产生(感觉或印象)"。 第二节 答案:36. to lead 37. was brought 38. extremely 39. from 40. farther/ further 41. what 42. would want 43. professional 44. eagerness 45. a 解析:36. 考查非谓语动词。此处是固定搭配 enable sb. to do sth. 句中的 and 连接三个并列结构,根据 my life transformation 和 my interest 可知此处应 用名词。eagerness 意为"渴望"。 45. 考查冠词。根据语境可知,此处表示"成为一个更好的我", make 表示"成为",后面的 me 在此 视为可数意义,故用不定冠词 a。 第三部分 写作 第一节 Dear Lucy, I'm so glad to know you're considering coming to China to learn traditional Chinese medicine. Here I'd like to express my warmest welcome! Having evolved thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine is now a common and mature healing approach which enjoys high reputation in China. Its fewer side effects and painless treatment drive many people to turn to traditional Chinese medicine when they suffer from diseases. With the worldwide spread of traditional Chinese medicine, it is now growing in popularity with foreigners. I'm convinced that your plan is worth a try and sincerely wish you success in your study. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 Paragraph 1: The ten-year-old was nervous and took a few seconds to consider the situation. Then he dived in, cutting through the waterfall. In a few seconds, he was next to the struggling girl. Panicky, she tried to climb on top of him. Sammy went under for a little while, and then came back up. Staying an arm's length away from the girl, he asked her if she could swim. When she said no, Sammy carefully pulled her onto his back and swam toward the shore. Paragraph 2: Soon, someone came and puled both kids away from the water. The little girl lay on the ground, coughing and too frightened to cry.
