Having worked for more than a decade in finance in the oil industry in Canada, Tori Fahey found

Folk tales have saddled (使承担） the moon with major responsibilities: moods, increases in
crime and even mental disorders are blamed on the Earth's only constant natural satellite. But could
the “lunar effect” disturb sleep?
Scientists have long understood that human activity is facilitated by light, be it sunlight,
moonlight or artificial light. But a recent study suggests our ability to sleep is distinctly affected by the
lunar cycle, even when taking into account artificial sources of light.
Using wrist monitors, researchers tracked sleep patterns in 98 individuals living in three local
communities in Argentina over the course of one to two months. One rural community had no
electricity access, a second rural community had limited access to electricity, while a third community
was located in an urban setting and had full access to electricity.
Participants in all three communities showed the same pattern of sleep oscillations (波动） as the
moon progressed through its 29.5-day cycle, with sleep duration changing by between 20 and more
than 90 minutes, and bedtimes varying by 30 to 80 minutes.
In each community, the peak of participants sleeping less and staying up later occurred in the
three-to-five-day period prior to full moon nights, and the opposite occurred on the nights before the
new moon, the authors found.
Unsurprisingly, data showed the “lunar phase effect” on sleep appeared to be stronger the more
limited access to electricity was.
“The result strongly suggests that human sleep is synchronized( 同 步 ） with lunar phases
regardless of ethnic and socio- cultural background and of the level of urbanisation,” the researchers
wrote in the journal Science Advances.
De la Iglesia added: “We humans tend to believe that we managed to somehow control nature,
and the use of artificial light is a great example of that. But it turns out that there are some forces of
nature that we cannot get away from."
Derk-Jan Dijk, a professor of sleep and physiology and the director of a sleep research centre at
the University of Surrey, described the study as exciting but noted that the researchers had not
addressed internal influences such as body clocks that could affect sleep patterns.

unmistakable. But this isn't a human cry-it's the voice of a killer whale called Wikie.
New research reveals that orcas (杀人鲸） are able to imitate human speech, saying words such
as “hello” ， “one, two” and “bye hye". The study also shows that the creatures are able to copy
unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas.
Writing in the journal Biological Sciences, researchers from institutions in Germany, UK, Spain
and Chile, describe how they carried out the latest research with Wikie, a 14-year-old female orca
living in an aquarium (水族馆） in France.
After first brushing up Wikie's grasp of the “copy” command, she was trained to imitate three
familiar orca sounds made by her 3-year-old Moana. Wikie was then additionally exposed to five orca
sounds she had never heard before, including noises sounding like a creaking (嘎吱响） door. Finally,
Wikie was exposed lo a human making three of the orca sounds, as well as six human sounds,
including “hello”， “Amy”， “ah ha”， “one, two" and “bye bye”。
The team found that Wikie was often quickly able to copy the sounds, whether from an orca or a
human, with all of the novel noises copied within· 17 trials. What's more, two human sounds and all
of the human-produced orca sounds were managed on the first attempt-although only one human
sound “hello” was correctly produced more than 50% of the time on subsequent trials.
The creatures are already known for their ability to copy the movements of other orcas, with
some reports suggesting they can also copy the sounds of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions after
several trials.
Scientists say the discovery helps to cast light on how different groups of wild killer whales have
ended up with distinct accents, adding weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between
orcas.

1. M: For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to build a house in the woods. You might ask
why I want to build my own house rather than buy one. Many who build houses say it’s to pass it on to
future generations, but my kids would never live outside the city. The truth is, gaining the ability to
finish such a complex project is its own reward. Before you even begin planning, you have to become
an expert in local building rules. But, once you start construction, the first thing you need to learn is
how to measure wood correctly. You can’t do any of this without basic mathematics. But I already
know this because I’m interested in computer science. Once plans were drawn, I had to dig the
foundation and cut the wood. This was truly great exercise — an added benefit of the whole project.
Then came the complicated part of putting it all together. It took me two years to have a complete
house I could live in. I know that doing something like this is not for everyone. It takes significant
effort, years of hard work, and focus to keep going even when you’re frustrated. But, like many things
in life, the hardest path is the most worthwhile.

顺利。2 段的字数也比较均衡，结构上我还是比较满意。但是相比南京盐城，
苏北 7 市我们用到的套话语言会更多，比如 cast a … look, ideas kept
buzzing in sb’s mind, mumble, a flower of kindness and friendship
began to blossom in our hearts, thunderous applause. 而且话题学生
应该更加熟悉，这是属于小主人公要主动去适应一个新的情境，不管是搬新
