Outdoor teaching gives students a great sense of wonder and awe as they learn.
On a misty September afternoon, a boy with a bright red backpack spotted something slimy on the ground.
"Hello, all the mushrooms," he said, tapping the fungus (真菌).
A teacher asked why they might be growing in that spot. The boy thought for a moment: ''Because it's shady
and wet!”
That was just one lesson for a group of kids from the Chicago Botanic Garden Nature Preschool, a program
that's part of the growing field of nature-based early childhood education.
Nature preschools in the US have more than doubled in the last three years, according to the Natural Start
Alliance, a project of the North American Association for Environmental Education. Ann Halley, director of the
Botanic Garden School, said that curiosity comes with the outdoors.
“Taking the children down to the cove (小海湾)area and just sitting and looking at the geese as they're
landing, just that sense of wonder and awe — those are things that can only be supplied when you're outside,"
Halley said, "These are the things that inspire lifelong learners."
Additionally, nature develops resilience (适应力),sets kids up for greater academic success and provides
a ready-made classroom with lessons in science, math and even empathy. Studies also show benefits ranging from
sunlight's positive effect on eyesight to stress reduction from green spaces.
In feet, teachers and parents are searching for ways to make outdoor programs more accessible. Andrea
Bockewitz, whose children attended a nature preschool, said she hopes that the solutions won't be temporary. "I'm
hoping that this is going to stick, that we are going to get kids outside more," Bockewitz said.
24. Why is the lesson about mushrooms mentioned in the beginning?
A. To criticize the traditional classroom teaching.
B. To explain the growing conditions of fungus.
C. To lead up to the topic of outdoor schooling.
D. To think highly of the boy for his cleverness.
25. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Nature preschools do not catch on in the US.
B. Outdoor teaching helps develop the children's curiosity.
C. All the students taking outdoor classes must become lifelong learners.
D. Kids show no interest in nature preschools.
26. What is Andrea Bockewitz's attitude to outdoor schooling?
A. Indifferent. B. Supportive. C. Sceptical. D. Negative.
27. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Learning with nature B. Say NO to traditional teaching
C. Nature preschools in the US D. Get close to nature

Love burgers but fear gaining weight? Plant-based burgers may help you.
In recent years, plant-based burgers have boomed in popularity for various health advantages.
The biggest benefit of plant-based burgers usually comes in the form of fiber and other nutrients. Fiber can
come in many forms and commonly is classified as soluble(可溶的)and insoluble. Both are beneficial, and most
vegetables, whole grains and nuts have some of each. Look for burgers that have peas, mushrooms, whole grains
or beans as main ingredients.
A plant-based diet in general has more phytonutrients — plant compounds that are thought to be both
preventative and protective in our long-term health. Some phytonutrients act as antioxidants ( 抗 氧 化 物
质),Often times, the phytonutrients are identified by different colors-red, orange, purple, green or tan. This is
why you hear the phrase “eat the rainbow”.
The challenge with any plant-based meal, however, is that the flavors and tastes are different. So this presents
an issue as far as what's added to the ingredients to mimic the taste and texture of meat.
Some plant-based burgers are going to have added fat. Commonly added fats are coconut oil or palm oil.
Like with natural meat burgers, it can raise cholesterol (胆固醇)and increase the risk of heart disease. Salt is
another common offender. Added salt is both a flavor enhancer (增强剂)and preservative in pre-packaged or
restaurant plant-based burgers. Too much salt can raise blood pressure.
To avoid these potentially harmful ingredients, you might consider making your own plant burger at home.
You can easily incorporate spices or other seasonings (调味料)instead of salt and added fat.
Overall, it's a great goal to eat more plant-based foods like vegetables, nuts, beans, lentils and whole grains to
get more variety into your diet.
Don't be afraid to experiment and modify recipes. You might find you like the new flavors and textures, as
well as how you feel, since the additional fiber and nutrients will keep your body moving as it should.
28. What do we know about plant-based burgers?
A. They're not healthy but tasty.
B. They are low in fat and salt.
C. They contain more phytonutrients than meat-based burgers.
D. They are all oil free.
29. What does the underlined word “mimic" mean in the fifth paragraph?
A. Imitate. B. Control. C. Remove. D. Replace.
30. Why does the author advice people to make their own plant burgers at home?
A. To save money and improve cooking skills. B. To control the ingredients of their food.
C. To make burgers according to their own taste. D. To add variety to their diet. 31. What suggestion does the
author give?
A. Try to be a vegetarian. B. Add palm oil to your meal.
C. Change your recipes at times. D. Incorporate meat and vegetables into a meal.
D
A water pump known as Gruba Kaska (Fat Kathy) is a local landmark in Warsaw. To get there, you must
walk 300 metres through a slimy tunnel under the Vistula river. There you will find eight clams (蛤蜊)hooked
up to computers. They are monitoring the city's drinking water.
The system is very good. When the molluscs encounter heavy metals, pesticides or other pollutants, they
close their shells, explains Piotr Domek of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, who has worked on the
project for three decades. To create a natural early-warning system, Mr Domek and his colleagues collect the
clams from rivers or reservoirs, and attach a coil(线圈)and a magnet to their shells. Computers register whether
their shells are open or closed by detecting changes in the magnetic field.
“In the case of a terrorist attack, an ecological disaster or another contamination of the water supply, the
clams will close," says Mr Domek. This, in turn, will automatically cut off the water supply. The clams, he
thinks, are life-savers. "If contaminated water goes straight to our taps, we will get poisoned," he says in "Fat
Kathy", a short film that celebrates the invaluable bivalves (双壳贝).
Today 50 Polish waterworks(and one in Russia)use clams in this way. There are drawbacks. Clams, as the
proverb reminds us, cannot talk. So they never reveal which toxin is causing them to clam up. Also, it seems that
they may be less good at detecting dangerous pharmaceuticals (医药品).Still, Piotr Klimaszyk, who leads the
team that developed the system, thinks it ought to be used everywhere. It is cheap: all you need is clams and
computers. "It allows you to check the water quality hour by hour, minute by minute, so why not?”
Mr Domek is now so fond of clams that he tries to deter people from eating them. He mischievously suggests
that they “have a negative effect on [sexual] potency”. Julia Pelka, the film-maker behind "Fat Kathy”, has also
stopped eating them. We use them “to protect ourselves from ourselves”, she says.
32. What does the underlined word “register” in the second paragraph mean?
A. put sth on a list B. show C. express D. give opinions publicly
33. How do clams work while protecting city's drinking water?
A. They refuse to drink the water when it is contaminated.
B. They close their shells when faced with pollutants.
C. They remind the computer operator to cut off the water supply.
D. They deal with the polluted water immediately.
34. What does the author want to do in the last paragraph?
A. To advise people to protect clams.
B. To introduce a film about clams.
C. To show people how to protect themselves.
D. To warn people clams are harmful to mental health.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The importance of clean drinking water.
B. The basic ways to fight pollution.
C. What we can do to protect clams.
D. How clams fight pollution.

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In
the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his
son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: ”No matter what,
I'll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the
school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning.
Remembering his son's classroom would be in the back right comer of the building; he rushed there and started
digging through the ruins.
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: "My son!” “My daughter!"
Other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It's too late! They're all dead!
You can't help! Go home! Come on, face reality there's nothing you can do!”
To each parent he responded with one line: "Are you going to help me now?” And then he continued to dig
for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school's ruins saying, “Fires are
breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You're in danger. We'll take care of it. Go home," To which
this loving, caring American father asked, “Are you going to help me now?” The police came and said, "You're
angry, anxious and it's over. You're endangering others. Go home. We'll handle it!” To which he replied, "Are you
going to help me now?” No one helped.

应用文写作
Good afternoon, my dear friends,
My name is Li Hua. Today I want to extend my gratitude to my English teacher Miss Yang.
Two years ago, I met Miss Yang for the first time. At that time, I was not interested in English
at all and my oral English is so broken that I didn't dare to speak in public. It was her encouragement
and care that made me learn to communicate with others and try to voice my opinions. I wouldn't
have made such rapid progress without her help.
As we all know, for the sake of our study and growth, all the teachers are working day and
night. I think the best way to express our thanks is to study hard. Let's take action from now on and
don't let our teachers down.
Thank you.

录音原文
(Text 1)
M: I’ll have three pairs of these shoes. Please tell me how much I should pay.
W: $40 for one pair, but we offer a 10% discount for each pair when you buy two pairs or more.
(Text 2)
W: Hey. Where are you?
M: In Heathrow Airport. My plane leaves in an hour, and it is expected to arrive at about 7 p.m.
W: OK. Ring me up when you arrive.
M:0K.
(Text 3)
M: I am sorry to hear that Karl was fired. But I know he was often absent for sickness and he frequently
arrived at work late.
W: Oh, neither of the reasons. Karl made a huge accounting error.
(Text 4)
M: Is it all right if I play in here?
W: Well actually, I don't think you're allowed to. Look at those boys. You can play there.
(Text 5)
W: So what's your decision, sir?
M: I think a self-guided tour would be best for my budget. Could you still help me with the plane
reservations?
W: Certainly.
(Text 6)
M: Hi, Mary. Are you going to the culture festival on Saturday?
W: No, I can't. I have a part-time job in the afternoons. How about you?
M: I can't either. I work part-time, too.
W: Sounds tiring. What do you usually do on Saturday nights?
M: Uh. I usually meet my friends. What about you?
W: I'm usually pretty tired after working, so I just relax at home and do my homework in the evening. I
get up early on Sundays and do the cleaning.
(Text 7)
M: Have you heard the city has passed a law against walking dogs on the streets?
W: Sure, it's published in the newspapers.
M: Then dogs have to be kept inside all the time.
W: It's rather cruel, isn't it?
M: Yes, you're right.
W: We shouldn't be so cruel to dogs. They are our friends.
M: But dogs often leave a mess on the streets, unless the owners can clean up the mess from their dogs.
But most owners seem not that thoughtful.
W: Perhaps the best solution is to build a dog park. Then people can walk their dogs there.
M: That sounds good and practical.
(Text 8)
W: Hello, can I help you?
M: Oh hello. Um, is that Mill House Farm?
W: Yes.
M. Well, I'd like to book five nights in July for a group of students from New York High School if the
price is reasonable.
W: We charge £4 a night per student.
M: What does that include exactly?
W: Well all the equipment is very basic. We have big clean areas, with wooden floors, so there is lots of
space to sleep. There is a bathroom but no hot water! Just cold water for washing.
M: Um, and what about food?
W: They do their own cooking. They'll have to bring sleeping bags and their own food with them.
M: Right, it sounds great! Well, I've got 20 students...
(Text 9)
W: Professor Martin, could I have a word with you for a moment, please?
M: Of course, Janet.
W: Wow, I can't believe you know name. Our class is pretty big.
M: Well, I pride myself on being able to remember who each of my students is. And I bet you're here
because of your recent midterm grade, aren't you?
W: Uh, yes, sir. You know. I've never actually gotten a C on an exam before, so I was kind of wondering
what exactly I did wrong on the test. Do you think you could give me any tips?
M: Well, since this is one of the first tests you've taken in college, let me explain a few things to you.
First, remember that college is a lot different than high school. In my history class I don't want you
to just repeat names, dates, and places. Instead, I want you to tell me not only what happened but
why it happened.
W: I think I understand, sir. Do you have any other tips for me?
M: Well, I think it might be a good idea if you were to go to speak with Tom, the teaching assistant on
the third floor. His job is to help students like you.
W: Great. I think I'll do that.
(Text 10)
I love movies! And after I see them, I like to comment on them. These are movies I saw this
year and I would like to recommend.
Among comedies I highly recommend Monsoon Wedding. It's an Indian movie. The story is
about an Indian wedding. Preparations for the wedding bring out funny and sad situations touching
on love and a past crime. This movie shows some of the typical customs of India, and the importance
of family and love. It's great!
I like Adaptation too. It is an excellent movie! But for me the first part of the movie was too
fast to follow, although there were clear captions. I hope to see it again on DVD at home.
The Pianist is set in the Second World War. It's about a young Polish-Jewish pianist, who lives
in Poland with his family. The Nazis sent his family to die in the concentration camps. He was safe,
but would have died without unusually good luck and the kindness of a few non-Jews. This is a
powerful movie with meaningful themes.
Rabbit-Proof Fence is set in the 1930s in Australia, and it's based on real events. It is about
three native girls who are separated from their families by the racist police who send them to special
centers. There the girls are taught practical skills and the government tries to make them part of
white Australian society. They finally fled away and walked 1,500 miles to find their mothers. This
is a sad, touching story that you should not miss.
