It tends to be a favorite frozen treat for anyone of any age. Ice cream may be universally appealing, but many countries have their own versions. Gelato, Italy Pasta aside, gelato is considered to be Italy’s food symbol. In fact, visiting the local ice cream shop called gelateria is a way of life for Italians. “Italians get together at gelaterias and socialize,” says Britton Bauer. “They’re popular hangouts and cultural icons.” Italian gelato is lower in fat than traditional ice cream, and crafted with whole milk, eggs, sugar and flavoring — chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio and stracciatel la are the most beloved flavors. Kids and adults ge t a kick out of the show. Kakigori, Japan Pastry chefs make kakigori, the Japanese version of ice cream, by shaving ice from ice blocks until it builds into a fluffy(蓬松的) pile. They then add syrups to the ice — usually crafted by hand with quality ingredients—in flavors such as green tea, strawberry, grape and melon. Kakigori is almost always served in a bowl. 21. A life magazine. C. A food safety report. D. A geography textbook. B If you stop a random person on the street in China, there’s a pretty good chance that their surname would be either Wang, Li, Zhang, Liu or Chen. That’s because those are the five most common surna mesin China — shared by 30% of the population. And the vast majority of the population share just 100 of those surnames. In comparison, the United States reported 6.3 million surnames in its 2010 census. There are a few reasons for this: China is less racially diverse than countries such as the US, wh erea wealth of minority groups increase surname diversity ( 多 样 性 ). It also has to do with language; you can’t just add a random stroke ( 音 节) to a Chinese character and create a new surname. But there’s also another factor at play:technology. With China roaring into the digital age, nearly everything has moved online — from making appointments to buying train tickets. The main problem is that not all Chinese characters have been coded into computer systems. T hat meant a world of trouble if you happened to have a rare character in your name. As of 2017, up to 60 million Chinese citizens faced this problem, according to Xinhua. People with rare characters in their names, which aren’t compatible( 兼 容 的 ) with existing computer systems, can get left behind — pushing many to change their names for the sake of convenience, even if it means abandoning centuries of heritage and languages. To try to address this, experts have increased the database from 32,000 characters to 70,0 00characters, according to the government. They’re still working to expand it to include more than 90,000 characters, said Chen Jiawei, an associate professor at Beijing Normal University. 24.What can be learned from the comparison according to Paragraph 1? A. There are fewer common surnames in China. B. Chinese people like sharing the same surname. C. The United States owns the most surnames in the world. D. 6.3 million surnames in China have been shared until now. 25.Which one describes surname diversity properly? A. New Chinese surnames are easy to create. B. Surname diversity totally depends on technology. C. Minority groups can increase surname diversity. D. Surnames in computer systems are regularly changed. 26.What may happen to people with rare characters in their names? A. They will lose their heritage. B. They have to change their names. C. They should expand the database. D. They may upgrade computer systems. 27.Why have experts increased the character database? A. To save heritage and languages. B. To keep Chinese traditional culture. C. To give people more choices when naming. D. To let us know more Chinese characters. In fact, over the past decade, much of Europe’s night train network has been cut. For many, it see m e d the end of the line was coming. But recently there has been a reappearance of night trains across Europe. On December 8, four national rail providers teamed up to announce new routes between 13 European cities. “You leave work at a normal time, have dinner, make your way to the station, get on the train, a nd wake up in the place you want to be. There’s no turning up at the airport at an early hour, as you d o for a budget flight.” says Monisha Rajesh, author of “Around the World in 80 Trains.” The Covid-19 pandemic has helped, too. It is easier for people’s social-distance on the train, says Rajesh. And night trains — where you can book an entire compartment (车厢) to yourself — are even better. Europe’s geography also helps the argument for night trains, says Nicolas Forien, part of Back onTrack, who points out that half of the flights departing France are either domestic, or going to a neighboring country. “The distance between European capitals is mostly ideal for night trains. The continent could be a night-train paradise.” 28.What’s the purpose of mentioning writers? A. To advertise for night trains. B. To promote sales of their works. C. Do you have any other films? Text 3 W: Did you get to the museum OK? M: No. The trains weren’t running, and the first two buses that came along were so crowded that I couldn’t get on. At last, I jumped into a taxi. There was an accident outside the cinema and the traffic was terrible. I’m driving on the highway now — see you in 20 minutes. M: That’s OK. Text 5 W: So Bob, what do we have for our listeners tonight? M: We’ll be interviewing our pop star at 8:00 and at 9:00 we’ll be talking about this week’s top films to see at the cinema. Before all that, though, we’ll be playing all the best music, starting right now! Text 6 M: Janet, I’m interested in knowing when you’re going to give your talk. I know you have been trying to catch up with all of your work since you broke your arm, but all of your classmates gave their talks two weeks ago. I’d say that it’s about time you did yours. What about tomorrow? W: Tomorrow? I couldn’t possibly do that. M: Then you can do it the day after tomorrow. That’s Thursday. You can give your talk as soon as class begins. It’s only a five-minute talk. I’m sure you’ll do fine. You get good grades in all of your exams. W: I suppose you’re right. Text 7 M: Darling, what are we going to have for lunch today? W: Oh, I was thinking about making some sandwiches. I’m too busy to cook a proper meal. M: Are you still working on that city planning project? I thought you’d finished it. Honestly, I don’t like eating sandwiches day after day. I just can’t stand it. W: You could cook some spaghetti. It would be quick and easy. M: You are joking, aren’t you? Do you remember the last time I did the cooking? I burnt everything. Where’s the phone number for the pizza delivery service? W: Next to the mirror. Text 8 M: Look, there are some nice shoes right here. They look comfortable. W: Pink is for little girls. M: Well, what about these ones? They’re black — certainly not for little girls. They are only 10 dollars. W: Those are for boys! M: Well, which ones do you want? W: Oh, these white ones are perfect! They’re just like the ones Blair wore at the airport last week. M: Sarah! They cost 75 dollars. You can buy five pairs of the pink ones with the money. Listen, choose one pair for less than 20 dollars, or you can just keep wearing your old shoes. W: I would rather wear my old shoes than wear those ugly things. M: Fine. Keep your old shoes, then. If you want these ones, you can get a job and pay for them yourself. W: I will. And you can explain to my mum why I don’t have any new shoes. M: Good. Let’s go then. Text 9 W: Tim, I’ve just read this article. I wrote the headline for you and we found a good photo but you’ve written about football. That’s not what our readers want. They want to know the interesting things about Joe Chapman. Did you ask him the questions I gave you? M: No, but I asked him why he hadn’t scored any goals on Saturday — he usually scores at least one. W: Yes ... M: I asked him how his knee was because he’d hurt it last Monday. He said it was getting better. W: Did you ask him about the argument he had with the new manager? M: No, but I asked him how long he was going to stay with the team. He said that he had no plans to move to another club. W: I’m very pleased for him. But surely you asked him about those fashion adverts he’s in — for men’s clothes? M: No. W: Next time I’ll do it myself. And I advise you not to do any more interviews with Joe Chapman. Text 10 Eating the right kind of food can make a big difference when you are preparing for and taking an exam. Are you surprised? The food you eat affects how you think, sleep and feel among other things. So, what should you eat? Brain power comes from energy. Good energy foods are things like bread, rice, and noodles. Food with a lot of sugar, like chocolate, sweets, or cake, are not usually a good choice for increasing your energy. They will give you some energy very quickly, but then your energy will quickly drop , and you’ll be more tired than before, with more weight than before! Drink lots of water when you are studying! Studies show that drinking lots of water makes it easier to concentrate, to get and remember information, to do math in your head and to avoid headaches! On the morning of an exam, drink lots of water but not too soon before the exam. You do not want to be uncomfortable in the middle of your exam because you need to use the toilet! Avoid drinking much coffee, tea, or Coke to help you stay up late and study. They’ll make you even more tired the next day. On the evening before your exam, have some good food like rice, noodles, potatoes, or bread to help you get a good night’s sleep, as well as a glass of milk. In the morning, have a good breakfast-eggs, bread and porridge- to give your brain plenty of energy to think clearly. If you’re feeling really nervous and can’t eat much, have a few bananas. They’re good energy fruit! Best wishes for success on all your exams!
