B It was a cloudy Monday in late October 2012 when Hurricane Sandy approached Long Island. I was confident that Sandy would pass through, leaving us undamaged because of our experience with Hurricane Irene last year. Some of my neighbors chose to leave, but my husband and I decided to stay. My husband moved my car to higher ground and left his in the driveway. We pulled out our candles and flashlights and felt prepared for Hurricane Sandy. The sky had become very dark. The heavy winds and rains had moved in. Power lines moved from side to side rapidly and water rose quickly in my front yard. My husband put pumps in the garage to fight against the water. I watched in disbelief and helplessness as I realized that even the most powerful pump could not manage it. My husband went to turn off the main power of the house to prevent a fire and move his car to higher ground. The time that he was gone felt like an eternity and I was afraid to be alone. When I opened the door, my husband was standing there and informed me that the water was too deep for us to try to go through We had to stay and wait out the storm. When the water reached the third step of our high ranch home, we decided that we would climb to the roof if the water continued to rise. We were not prepared for Sandy. The cost was huge in the loss of personal items-such as pictures, videos…—that tied us to special memories of our past. Despite that loss.l feel we areblessed to be alive and share our story. 24. C For much of the past hundred years, classrooms have been designed with the teacher seated in front of desks for students. The desks are almost always positioned in lines facing the teacher. But educators now say children can do better in a less structured learning environment. And designers have been providing spaces and seating to meet those suggestions. Bob Pearlman works as an education consultant in the United States. He helps teachers and school administrators with educational planning and other issues. He told The Associated Press traditional classrooms are a thing of the past. Now students work in “extended learning areas” that include project - planning rooms, workrooms, and laboratories, as well as learning spaces for groups and individuals. Pearlman points to Albemarle County Public Schools, in Charlottesville,Virginia. The school system invited teams from all its schools to develop learning spaces that would help students deal with complex ideas and work on creative building projects. Now its elementary school classes have exchanged traditional desks for things like soft seating and connectable tables. Another change to the design of classrooms is the ability to connect to the Internet. “Classrooms and libraries used to be the only spaces where students spent their school hours. Wireless, laptops and project learning have changed that.” Pearlman said. He noted that this has made all school spaces into possible extended learning areas. “Natural light, reduced outside noise and good air quality are all considerations in classroom design”. says Aaron Jobson. He is with the Quattrocchi Kwok Architects in Santa Rosa, California, “More and more evidence connects the physical environment to learning outcomes”, Jobson said. New designs include glass walls inside buildings and doors that increase connectedness among students and create more open space for teachers. 28. Where can students learn better? A. In well-ordered classrooms. B In traditional classrooms. C. In less structured classrooms. D.In classrooms with modern equipment. 29. What’s the change of the elementary school classes in Albemarle County? A. New desks are positioned facing teachers. B. Libraries become the places for students to learn. C. Soft seats and connectable tables are equipped. D. Students study at home through the Internet. 30. What can we infer from the text? A. School education is extremely important. B. Classroom design has nothing to do with learning outcomes. C. Teaching methods contribute much to students’ exam results. D. Classroom design should take physical environment into account. 31.What’s the best title of the text? A.The New Educational Plannings B.Some Creative Teaching Theories C.Traditional Teaching Methods D.The New Design of Classrooms D When was the last time you thought about breathing? Most people usually do not. When we are healthy, breathing happens naturally and easily. Without much effect on our part, the human respiratory system(呼吸系统)works hard. Experts say we take about 20,000 breaths every day. One such expert is James Hoyt, a doctor at the University of Colorado’s Health Pulmonology Clinic. He notes our “respiratory muscles are working every minute of the day, every day of our lives.” A muscle called the diaphragm(横膈膜)separates the chest and abdominal cavities(腹腔). As we breathe in, the diaphragm tightens. The chest cavity opens, and the lungs expand. When we breathe out, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, pushing air out. When you breathe deeply, the air coming in through your nose fully fills your lungs, and the lower belly(腹部)rises. On its website, Harvard Medical School notes that deep breathing may slow the heartbeat, lower blood pressure and lower stress. Deep breaths help your body fully exchange incoming oxygen with outgoing carbon dioxide. However, many people do the opposite of deep breathing. They take short breaths and have shallow breathing. Shallow breathing makes you feel short of breath and worried, or anxious. The American Lung Association notes that shallow breathing, over time, leaves old, stale air in the lungs. This leaves less room for the diaphragm to bring in fresh oxygen. And that means lower oxygen levels and less oxygen for exercise and activity. Several health websites explain an easy deep breathing exercise. Find a place to sit or lie down Place one hand just below your ribs(肋骨). Take a slow, deep breath 一 or inhale 一 through your nose. Feel your hand go up. Your stomach should rise and expand. Now breathe out slowly through your mouth. Make sure to breathe out-or exhale 一 all the way. Feel your hand and stomach go down. 32.How can we breathe air out? A. By the diaphragm’s tightening. B By the chest cavity’s opening. C. By the lungs’expanding. D. By the diaphragm’s moving upward. 33. What does the author think of deep breathing? A. It’s harmful. B. It can cause anxiety. C. It can reduce stress. D. It’s bad for the heart. 34.What’s the probable meaning of the underlined word “stale” in paragraph 4? A. No longer new. B. Not beneficial. C.Poisonous. D.Available. 35.Which column is the text taken from? A.Special News. B. Health Report. C.The Making of a Nation. D. People in America. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Homework is your teachers’way of evaluating how much you understand of what’s going on in class. He traveled around the world in search of new lands, new animals, and new relics to discover. And in every place he visited, Nicholas found a special gift to bring back to his son Christian. In his most adventurous journey, Nicholas traveled to the Arctic to find the North Pole. Afterweeks of tireless dogsled trekking, Nicholas reached the northern Arctic Circle where very little life could survive. As the weeks turned to months, Nicholas could still not find the North Pole and his food supply was getting low. By this time, Nicholas saw small footprints in the snow. Hungry and freezing, Nicholas followed the footprints to a small village. He could not believe that anyone could live in such a freezing place, but there were dozens of small huts(木屋)around him. Nicholas unleashed(解开)his dogs and went exploring. In the center of the village there sat a small tree. What caught Nicholas’eyes was a hat sitting atop the tree. Nicholas fought to reach the small tree and grabbed the hat. Not only did it look warm, but also he thought that it would also make a perfect gift for Christian-if he ever made it out of the Arctic and back home. The moment Nicholas placed the hat on his head, everything changed. The villagers left their huts and came out to surround him. The dogs became frightened and ran away at the sight of the crowd. At that moment, a woman called Michael stepped forward and spoke. “The hat you are wearing was removed from the top of our tree. That tree is the North Pole, where there is no day and no night. As long as the hat stays here, we are unaffected by time. Now that you wear the hat too, you will not age. But the hat cannot be removed. If you do so or leave with the hat, we would not be able to survive.” Nicholas was astonished. He sat down on his sled and cried. He needed to get back to his son. “You may leave for one day a year. Such a short time away would not harm us.” Michael said. “I cannot go anywhere in one day’s time”, Nicholas said. 注意: 1.写作词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “You may use our caribous(驯鹿)and you will find the trip much shorter while you wearthe hat”, said Michael. But do you know the history of the painting? The painting was first sold to the king of France, and later Napoleon hung it in his own bedroom. Then, in 1911, it was stolen from the Louvre by an Italian man. Apparently, the man simply put the painting under his shoulder and walked out the front door. The workers in the Museum didn’t even notice the painting was missing until a day or so later. The Mona Lisa turned up after about a year and a half in the shop of an antique dealer in Italy. The man who had stolen the painting wanted its back to the artist’s home country and, after his task accomplished, he was seen as a national hero by many. Italian authorities then returned it to the Louvre Museum, where it now hangs behind bullet proof glass. 37. In order to further protect the environment, China has adopted various measures to promote the development of the new energy vehicle industry. Compared with traditional cars, new energy vehicles have advantages. New energy vehicles are more environmentally-friendly and we can greatly reduce the cost of use. Besides, electric motors operate at much lower noise. In my view, the development of new energy vehicles is an inevitable trend and the need of social development. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 第二节 【参考范文】 “You may use our caribous(驯鹿)and you will find the trip much shorter while you wear the hat”, said Michael. The villagers took good care of Nicholas. They fed him well and gave him the largest hut they had. Nicholas spent the next two days building gifts for his son. By the day of his departure, Nicholas had built his son dozens of wonderful gifts out of wood. The villagers helped him pack the presents. Nicholas was almost flying when he was on the caribous! He looked down to see the smiling face of Michael as he waved him goodbye. But when he entered his house, his son was no longer there and none of his belongings were there either. He wanted his son to have a gift from him. So Nicholas went to every house in the village and dropped a single toy down each chimney, hoping that one of the toys would reach his beloved son. The heartbreak of not finding his son had reminded Nicholas of those waiting for his return up north. He could not let them down, no matter how much he wanted to stay. So with every gift gone, Nicholas flew back to the North Pole.
