B Having worked for more than a decade in finance in the oil industry in Canada, Tori Fahey found herself wanting more from life. But it wasn't through desperation that her circumstances changed: “I didn't get fed up and storm off, nothing like that; it was curiosity about other interests and wanting to experience something new.” Fahey left her job and completed an MBA before setting up a move to New York to begin a degree. However, the opportunity of an open year between the MBA and the degree came up, and as a keen touring cyclist, Fahey realised that a much dreamedabout adventure was now becoming a possibility: “The ride in Africa had been on my fantasy list. It was a moment when I realised that I could do anything, so I should.” Fahey rode across Africa, a 7,500mile trip that took four months. The whole experience had a lifechanging impact. Fahey said: “Bicycles provide a literal freedom. You don't allow yourself to feel like that in everyday life because there are so many distractions. But when you're out on the bike and there's nothing else, you're really free to experience what life is.” Postdegree, Fahey worked on projects with the UNDP(United Nations Development Project) in Montenegro with the aim of bringing investment to rural communities. It was while working on these projects that the seeds were sown for the next new investment. “ It was through my trip across Africa that I discovered pannier and rack( 挂 篓 ) systems inconvenient and I was never going to use them again.” Little did she know this would lead her to start up her own company. In 2013, Apidura was born, producing storage solutions for people looking to travel the world by bike, race across continents and carry all they need to do so. It's now a successful global brand, but Fahey remains reflective about what else the company can do for people. ( )24. Why did Fahey leave her job in Canada? A. She was bored with the job. B. She was disappointed with life. C. She wanted to add new dimensions to her life. D. She found it hard to adjust to the circumstances. ( )25. Which can best describe Fahey's ride experience in Africa? A. Demanding. B. Liberating. C. Eventful. D. Dangerous. ( )26. Why did Fahey launch Apidura? A. To encourage bicycle travelling. B. To make her investment profitable. C. To help cyclists carry traveling stuff. D. To increase the pleasure of riding bikes. ( )27. What is the passage mainly about? A. A tough path to fame. B. An adventure across Africa. C. The benefits of green travelling. D. The story behind the birth of Apidura. C Folk tales have saddled( 使 承 担 ) the moon with major responsibilities: moods, increases in crime and even mental disorders are blamed on the Earth's only constant natural satellite. But could the “lunar effect” disturb sleep? Scientists have long understood that human activity is facilitated by light, be it sunlight, moonlight or artificial light. But a recent study suggests our ability to sleep is distinctly affected by the lunar cycle, even when taking into account artificial sources of light. Using wrist monitors, researchers tracked sleep patterns in 98 individuals living in three local communities in Argentina over the course of one to two months. One rural community had no electricity access , a second rural community had limited access to electricity, while a third community was located in an urban setting and had full access to electricity. Participants in all three communities showed the same pattern of sleep oscillations(波动) as the moon progressed through its 29.5day cycle, with sleep duration changing by between 20 and more than 90 minutes, and bedtimes varying by 30 to 80 minutes. In each community, the peak of participants sleeping less and staying up later occurred in the threetofiveday period prior to full moon nights, and the opposite occurred on the nights before the new moon, the authors found. Unsurprisingly, data showed the “lunar phase effect” on sleep appeared to be stronger the more limited access to electricity was. “ The result strongly suggests that human sleep is synchronized( 同 步 ) with lunar phases regardless of ethnic and sociocultural background and of the level of urbanisation,”the researchers wrote in the journal ScienceAdvances. De la Iglesia added: “We humans tend to believe that we managed to somehow control nature, and the use of artificial light is a great example of that. But it turns out that there are some forces of nature that we cannot get away from.” DerkJan Dijk, a professor of sleep and physiology and the director of a sleep research centre at the University of Surrey, described the study as exciting but noted that the researchers had not addressed internal influences such as body clocks that could affect sleep patterns. ( )28. What is the recent study mainly about? A. The harm of lunar effect. B. The reliability of folk tales. C. The function of artificial light. D. The effect of the lunar cycle on sleep. ( )29. When did the participants in the experiment sleep least? A. On the full moon night. B. On the new moon night. C. On the night after the new moon. D. On the night before the full moon. ( )30. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph but one refer to? A. Controlling nature. B. The level of urbanisation. C. The escape from forces of nature. D. Synchronizing with lunar phases. ( )31. What did DerkJan Dijk think of the research findings? A. Groundless. B. Persuasive. C. Incomplete. D. Impressive. D Highpitched(高音的) and yet distinct, the sound of a voice calling the name “Amy” is unmistakable. But this isn't a human cry—it's the voice of a killer whale called Wikie. New research reveals that orcas(杀人鲸) are able to imitate human speech, saying words such as “hello”,“one, two” and “bye bye”. The study also shows that the creatures are able to copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas. Writing in the journal BiologicalSciences, researchers from institutions in Germany, UK, Spain and Chile, describe how they carried out the latest research with Wikie, a 14yearold female orca living in an aquarium(水族馆) in France. After first brushing up Wikie's grasp of the “copy” command, she was trained to imitate three familiar orca sounds made by her 3yearold Moana. Wikie was then additionally exposed to five orca sounds she had never heard before, including noises sounding like a creaking(嘎吱响) door. Finally, Wikie was exposed to a human making three of the orca sounds, as well as six human sounds, including “hello”, “Amy”, “ah ha”, “one, two” and “bye bye”. The team found that Wikie was often quickly able to copy the sounds, whether from an orca or a human, with all of the novel noises copied within 17 trials. What's more, two human sounds and all of the humanproduced orca sounds were managed on the first attempt—although only one human sound “hello” was correctly produced more than 50% of the time on subsequent trials. The creatures are already known for their ability to copy the movements of other orcas, with some reports suggesting they can also copy the sounds of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions after several trials. Scientists say the discovery helps to cast light on how different groups of wild killer whales have ended up with distinct accents, adding weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between orcas. ( )32. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text? A. To analyze orcas' speech abilities. B. To highlight the conservation of the orca. C. To inform us of orcas' ability to imitate sounds. D. To convince us of the intelligence of the orca. ( )33. What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph? A. The process of the research. B. The outcome of the research. C. The purpose of the research. D. The significance of the research. ( )34. Which of the following was the easiest for Wikie to copy? A. The six human sounds. B. All the new orca sounds. C. Humanproduced orca sounds. D. Dolphin and sea lion sounds. ( )35. What may the discovery help explain? A. Why orcas imitate human speech. B. Why orcas have different accents. C. How orcas copy others' movements. D. How orcas communicate with others. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 We are taught from childhood that warming up is a must in preparation for any exercise. It allows us to prepare our muscles for the strain(拉力) we are about to place on them and prevent injury. __36__ These all prepare for an effective workout. __37__ It prevents dizziness, helps return the heart rate back to normal and prevents chronic venous insufficiency(CVI). Also known as “blood pooling”, CVI occurs when the blood in blood vessels(血管) expands during prolonged exercise, making it difficult for it to return to the heart from the legs. According to many health and fitness instructors, the total cooldown period should last 3 to 10 minutes, or until you are ready to stop. __38__ For example, if you have been working your legs, you will need to do lower body stretches or a slow walk. There are many helpful tutorials online. The best way to measure whether you have cooled down effectively is purely based on common sense—if you feel your heart rate has reduced, that's enough. There is no research to prove stretching after a session will help reduce pain, but if you feel it helps, do so. __39__ Cooling down methods, including foam rollers, a sports massage or dry needling, are worth investigating. __40__ If the pain is there the next day, consult your doctor, and, more importantly, warm up more thoroughly next time. A. It is down to personal preference. B. Fast walking is the simplest exercise. C. If you are not flexible, lower your upper body. D. If you experience any pain when stretching, stop. E. But cooling down is as important as warming up. F. Areas to target depend on which part of the body you have trained. G. In 2018, PlantaMedica published a review of previous research on chocolate's effect __56__ mood. The authors found that few of the studies __57__(analyze) chemically the chocolate consumed by participants. That matters, said the authors, because chemicals present in chocolate vary widely based on how it __58__(process), such as roasting temperature and time. Also, one specific chemical, interaction between multiple chemicals or something else may __59__(entire) affect health. Our brains naturally produce anandamide(大麻素). And it's also found in chocolate, __60__ leads to claims that the sweet stuff is the ultimate feelgood food. So science still has to sort that one out too. Dear Charles, ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 第二节 (满分 25 分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 I was in my room, slowly getting ready to head to the community theater with the rest of my family. I wasn't in the mood for being onstage. “Kate, come here,” my mom called from down the hall. I found my mom outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. Henry, my new stepbrother, was nearby, working on a complicated string knot(结), as usual. My mother gave the book a shake. “Henry's book is in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” “Not on purpose,” I said. “It was already on the edge, and it happened to fall in when I stepped out of the tub.” My mother glared at me, something she never did before I had a stepfamily. “You could have picked it up,” she said. “That would have been the kind thing to do.” As Henry walked ahead of us to the car,my mom took me aside. “This is our corner of the world now, Kate,” she said. “Let's try to make it a good one.” The community theater was busy when we got there. Theater used to be what my mom and I did together—one play a year for our special thing. With Henry involved, it didn't seem so special anymore. Henry's dad,who had arrived earlier to help set up, was already in costume. “Dear children,” he called in a theatrical voice. “Come to Father.” I thought he was a nice guy even before he and my mother started dating. Unfortunately, I now had a stepbrother to deal with. Soon, it was curtain time. I peeked(偷看) out at the audience and noticed that the darkened theater was full. My heart beat faster. I forgot my annoyance at Henry as the lead actress sang, “The hills are alive with the sound of music! ” Nothing compared to show nights. Before long, it was my turn. I went onstage, song book in hand. As we kids lined up before Henry's dad, who was playing the part of our father, I realized how poorly I'd tied the string on my skirt which was over leggings(打底裤). I should have asked my mom for help. 注意:续写词数应为 150 左右。 And then, suddenly, the string knot on my skirt came untied.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ I shot Henry a grateful glance.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 2020~2021 学年高三年级模拟考试卷 (南通、连云港等七市) 英语参考答案及听力材料 第一部分 1~5 ACBBA 6~10 CCAAB 11~15 BCACC 16~20 AABBC 第二部分 第一节 21~23 BBA 24~27 CBCD 28~31 DDAC 32~35 CACB 第二节 36~40 GEFAD 第三部分 第一节 41~45 BCACD 46~50 ABADC 51~55 DBBAB 第二节 56. on/upon 57. had analyzed/analyzed 58. is processed 59. entirely 60. which 61. amounts 62. higher 63. addiction 64. seen 65. however/though 第四部分 第一节 One possible version: Dear Charles, Knowing you are keen on Chinese idioms, I'm writing to share with you something about them. Learning Chinese idioms can help you develop a high level of competence in your communication skills. To have a better understanding of Chinese idioms, you should know how they originated, which can help you grasp them more precisely. Besides, practice makes perfect. It's better for you to use them in the daily conversations and literary creation. I hope we can exchange ideas with each other as often as possible. With both my hands holding the song book, I was at a loss what to do, when Henry, who noticed my embarrassment, came to my aid. He fixed my costume, tying the string with a fancy knot. He made me a joke about me“not”knowing knots. At this, the audience broke into laughter, but it felt OK. IshotHenryagratefulglance. He smiled as if my mistake was no big deal. I got through the rest of the play successfully, still a shock in my mind. After we'd bowed and moved offstage, I went straight to Henry and tapped him on the arm. “Thanks,” I said genuinely. He grinned, “Knot a problem.” Maybe it won't be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all. 听力材料 Text 1 M: Next year I'm going to visit Berlin. Then I'll fly down to India and on to Cambodia and Vietnam. W: Go to China. There are some amazing sights—and bring me back a silk dress! M: It won't be just a shopping trip. Text 2 W: Hi Jeff, you're looking younger every day. M: Thanks, Kathy. You look different, except for that smile. W: I've lost 28 pounds since you last saw me. Text 3 M: This is a long movie. I feel like we've been watching it for hours. W: We have. It's three hours long and it started at seven o'clock. M: Oh, right. We only have an hour to go. I'm starting to feel uncomfortable in this seat. Text 4 W: Dad, what are you looking for in the glove drawer? It's the middle of summer. M: Oops, wrong drawer. I have to fill out a passport form. Have you seen my pen? W: There are about ten on the computer table. Text 5 W: Can you promise to be a good boy and don't go anywhere while I pick up the cake? It will only take two minutes, and then we'll go home. M: But can I at least take off my seat belt? Text 6 M: I was in the shower this morning when I heard the front door bell. I dried myself quickly and ran downstairs but I missed them. W: Do you know who it was? M: Yes, they left a card saying that there is a parcel and they'll try again in the morning. W: Oh no. That's my dress. I want to wear it tonight. I'm going out with my friend. M: Sorry, dear. These people always seem to come at the wrong time. It's never in the middle of the afternoon when I'm doing nothing. W: I'm really annoyed. They could have left it with a neighbor. Text 7 W: Everyone welcome Jon into our company! He will be responsible for leading market research, with a goal of increasing our profit by 100% to 100 million per year. M: Hi Jon! Everyone, I actually know Jon already. We used to go to school together, and we used to run into each other sometimes. I have heard a lot about him, and I am sure he will help us reach this goal. W: Thanks for the kind words. Now, for the second important matter of today, please remember to remove or throw out your food from the fridge every Friday. The old food in there has been an issue ever since I joined this company a year ago, and I think it is finally time to deal with it. Text 8 W: Oh no, my legs are so painful! I need to stop now. M: Come on now! You told me you'll never make the soccer team unless you can run five kilometers. Still one more to go! W: No more for me! And about that... I changed my mind. I don't think soccer is right for me. It's not the running... It's just that playing on a team is too much pressure. M: So, is that why you quit volleyball last year? But you said you definitely still wanted to do a school sport. You're competitive by nature. W: Yeah. That's why I'm going to try out for the swimming team. Plus, it's not as hard on my legs if I'm in the water. M: I guess I can see that... but I don't know why you're so worried about playing a team sport. W: I just prefer to focus on what I'm doing. If I mess up, it's my own problem and doesn't affect anyone else. Text 9 W: Ever since the 2010s, people have stopped calling their friends. Now, people use text messages for 90% of communication. M: I used to call my friends all the time. But phones got really advanced in 2015, and I have only texted since then. W: But, what's less convenient is how some people send voice messages now. You never know what they're going to say, and what if you set the volume too loud. It can lead to some very awkward situations. M: Exactly. Yesterday, I was in the main office of SDS Limited when Acme Corporation called. W: Why is that so bad? M: Because they called me to arrange a job interview! Imagine if I accidentally put the phone on speaker mode. W: Haha! When are you going to tell SDS you're looking for a new job? M: When I get one, obviously. Well, how's your life at Dynamic Tech, by the way? W: Great. I'm thankful for the recommendation you gave me. M: No problem. The company has great people. W: To be honest, the pay is much higher than what I got before. That's what interested me the most. But yes, the people are really nice. M: They're at such a convenient location too! Text 10 M: For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to build a house in the woods. You might ask why I want to build my own house rather than buy one. Many who build houses say it's to pass it on to future generations, but my kids would never live outside the city. The truth is, gaining the ability to finish such a complex project is its own reward. Before you even begin planning, you have to become an expert in local building rules. But, once you start construction, the first thing you need to learn is how to measure wood correctly. You can't do any of this without basic mathematics. But I already know this because I'm interested in computer science. Once plans were drawn, I had to dig the foundation and cut the wood. This was truly great exercise — an added benefit of the whole project. Then came the complicated part of putting it all together. It took me two years to have a complete house I could live in. I know that doing something like this is not for everyone. It takes significant effort, years of hard work, and focus to keep going even when you're frustrated. But, like many things in life, the hardest path is the most worthwhile.
