What have eight legs, hunt among a group of fish and can throw a mean sucker punch(猛击)?
According to research published in Ecology last week, the answer would be octopuses. Octopuses
punch fish. Deliberately.
The first time researcher Eduardo Sampaio witnessed this phenomenon, he laughed. Normally
that'd be fine but at the time he was underwater wearing scuba(水肺 潜水 )equipment. "I almost
choked on my regulator," he said in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition. "When I saw it for
the first time, I just burst out laughing."
The octopus is typically a solitary creature, but sometimes an octopus might take part in a
hunting party made up of fishes. A grouper's( 石 斑 鱼 )gestures, for example, can clue( 提 示 )an
octopus into the location of prey. Sampaio and his co-researchers were studying this mutually
beneficial behavior when they came across an octopus punching fish while hunting.
Although researchers have observed octopuses punching fish before, the behavior happening in
the context of a hunting party is new. And it can come suddenly, out of nowhere, Sampaio said. "You
can see there some punches are almost like a small boop," Sampaio said. "And the other ones that
even the whole arm curls up and uncurls afterwards, you know, like the motion of a boxer doing a
punch. "
s a partner-control mechanism, Sampaio explained, to drive the fish away from the octopus
1.How did Eduardo Sampaio feel when he first witnessed the phenomenon?
A.Shocked. B.Amused. C.Frightened. D.Concerned
2.How does Sampaio explain the process in paragraph 4?
A.By making a comparison. B.By introducing a concept
C.By referring to another study D.By quoting an expert's words.
3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Octopuses tend to attack a specific fish species
B.Octopuses punch fishes with clear aims each time
C.Octopuses will dismiss the fish which's its next meal
D.Octopuses are not very often to be spotted punching fishes
4.Where is the text probably from?
A.A research paper B.A political report.
C.A science magazine. D.An autobiography

Automakers around the world, from Japan to Texas, are struggling with a global shortage of
computer chips. Volkswagen sounded the alarm about the growing problem last month. Now more
automakers are reporting problems that are trimming production plans based on their supply of
semiconductors (半导体).
Semiconductors are at the heart of our phones and computers, but they're critical components
for new cars, too — and not just in fancy touchscreens. "They're controlling the engine and the
emissions and even in the switches for raising and lowering your windows," says Kristin Dziczek,
the vice president at the Center for Automotive Research.
Last year, when auto manufacturing was suspended for the pandemic, everyone predicted a
prolonged slowdown in car sales. The global semiconductor industry planned accordingly, and
arranged to sell more computer chips to other buyers. But then, much to everyone's surprise,
shoppers were still eager to buy new cars. As soon as they reopened, plants resumed normal
production at a remarkable speed.
At the same time, demand for chips from other sectors — like consumer electronics — was also
increasing. "Every school district in the country had to buy new computers," Dziczek says.
For car shoppers, this could mean some vehicle models are harder to find for the next few
months. So far, the consequences have been uneven among automakers. Ford and Fiat Chrysler have
entire plants on pause, while General Motors says its manufacturing operations have not been
affected, and Toyota does not expect any impact to employment. The United Auto Workers, which
represents factory workers at Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler plants, notes that its contracts include
"unemployment and supplemental pay" for workers affected by production downtimes.
5.In what ways can semiconductors not be applied in cars?
A.In the engine system. B.In fancy touchscreens.
C.In the emission system. D.In the switches of car doors.
6.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It'll be harder for shoppers to find a dream car.
B.The contracts are not beneficial to the workers.
C.Toyota is expected to face employment problem.
D.All the automakers have paused the entire plants.
7.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.A Dream Car Is Not A Dream
B.The Growing Popularity Of Semiconductor
C.Semiconductor Won't Hurt Chip Production
D.Auto Production Disturbed By Chip Shortages

Imagine a world where you move around in front of a personal computer in your own sound
space. You listen to your favorite songs, play loud computer games or watch a movie — all without
other people hearing the sound and without headphones.
That is the possibility presented by “sound beaming”, a new technology from Noveto Systems,
an Israeli company. On Friday, the company introduced a desktop device that sends sound directly to
a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver.
Noveto Systems gave The Associated Press (AP) a chance to test its SoundBeamer 1.0 before
its introduction. The AP’s Louise Dixon writes that listening to the device is like something from a
science fiction movie. The sound seems so close that it feels like it is inside your ears while also in
front, above and behind them.
Noveto expects the device will have many uses. Office workers could listen to music or
conference calls without others hearing. People could play a game, a movie or music without waking
up others in the same room. Because the device does not use headphones, it is possible to hear other
sounds in the room clearly.
The device uses a 3-D sensing module that finds and follows the ear position of the listener. It
sends ultrasonic waves (超声波) to create sound pockets by the user’s ears. The 3-D method creates
sound on all sides of the listener, therefore the listeners feel completely transported into the scene.
By changing a setting, the sound can follow a listener around when he moves his head. It is also
possible to move out of the sound beam's path and hear nothing at all.
While the idea of sound beaming is not new, Noveto was the first to launch the technology.
According to the chief executive officer Christophe Ramstein, a “smaller” version of the device
will be ready for release to consumers next year.
8.What does the underlined word “possibility” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The listener may put on music to block out other sounds.
B.The listener may hear sound only for him or her without using headphones.
C.The listener may enjoy songs or movies without being interrupted by others.
D.The listener may have the ability to pick up some special sounds.
9.What does Louise Dixon think of SoundBeamer 1.0?
A.Amazing. B.Impossible.
C.Strange. D.Meaningful.
10.How does SoundBeamer put sound in the listener's head?
A.It places the listener on the scene to hear the sound.
B.It fixes a sound beam’s path which can not be changed.
C.It follows the listeners around to send and receive sounds.
D.With 3-D tracking technology, it sends ultrasonic waves to the target listener.
11.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To promote the SoundBeamer. B.To introduce a new sound device.
C.To recommend new headphones. D.To explain a technical phenomenon.

EVEN the best of communicators can sometimes hit a wrong note, whether with a joke, turn of
phrase, or even an ill-timed chuckle(轻笑).
For instance, a former finance minister Ken Gabriel usually tries to keep things casual when
answering reporters’ questions. But in a television interview on the news program 60 Minutes, some
people felt his register was a little too casual—even careless.
At one point, Gabriel spoke about the bankers who have been widely blamed for causing the
collapse of the financial sector: “I mean there were a whole bunch of folks who, on paper, if you
looked at quarterly reports, were wildly successful, selling derivatives that turned out to
be …completely worthless,” Gabriel said, with a chuckle.
Shocked by Gabriel’s laughter during the interview, journalist David finally asked: “You’re
sitting here. And you’ re—you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems.”
Gabriel quickly explained himself by replying, “No, no. There’s gotta be a little humor to get
you through the day.” But that exchange ended up making news, as TV pundits, journalists and
public relations experts debated Gabriel’s tone.
One unnamed strategist for Gabriel’ s party said that the finance minister’ s attempts at humor
were distracting: “Gabriel is gifted in so many ways, but humor is not something that he seems to be
comfortable with. He does not come across as a funny guy.”
The TV critic Daniel, meanwhile, came to Gabriel’s defense.
“Gabriel isn’t a rookie …All this laughter seems clearly to be calculated rather than accidental.
His laughs last night were designed as laughs of reassurance. They were designed to tell the TV
audience he understands the severity of the situation.”
There would have been little debate if Gabriel had not laughed during a speech. Answering
questions in a public setting, however, should allow for a more conversational register. But as
Gabriel discovered, not everyone agrees on just how casual the tone should be.
12.What’s the meaning of the phrase hit a wrong note?
A.Say something wrong. B.Do something wrong.
C.Write down something wrongly. D.Play the music wrongly.
13.What did Gabriel do when journalist David asked him about the laughter?
A.Tried to account for it. B.Found an excuse for it.
C.Refused to say anything about it. D.Learned a lesson from it.
14.Which of the following stands by Gabriel?
A.The banker. B.David.
C.The unnamed strategist. D.Daniel.
15.Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.Debatable speeches of Gabriel. B.Be cautious while you are speaking.
C.Gabriel’s rude behavior in speeches. D.Honest or not, it’s hard to say.

There are about 6,000 languages that are spoken around the world. 16. If no action is taken,
some of these languages will become extinct.
17. One is that some communities of native speakers of the endangered languages no
longer exist, Huff Post reported. These people sometimes leave their communities and move to cities
or towns.
In addition, the languages of “dominant” cultures may drive other languages into extinction. To
get a better education and job, young people have to focus their attention on learning dominant
languages rather than their own languages. Dominant languages include English, French and
Mandarin.
Once a language dies, it rarely comes back to life. 18. In New Zealand, the government has
said it wants more than 20 percent of the country’s population to be able to speak basic Maori, an
indigenous ( 土 著 的 ) language, by 2040. It plans to provide Maori lessons in all New Zealand
schools by 2025, The New York Times reported.
In September, 2018, the US state of Alaska announced that the loss of native languages was an
“emergency”. 19.
Some people argued that language loss, like the loss of some animal species, is simply a fact of
life on earth. 20. When we lose a language, we lose the worldview and culture of the people who
spoke it. Language itself is often the only way to convey a certain community’s history and culture,
as well as its knowledge of things like math and geography, the BBC noted.
A.Languages become endangered for many reasons.
B.But what about the endangered languages?
C.However, all languages are a form of human heritage.
D.What can people do to preserve languages?
E.It is now working to give new life to such languages, Quartz reported.
F.Governments across the globe are taking action to prevent this.
G.But 43 percent of these languages are dying out, according to UNESCO.

Shanti wanted the wooden doll in Ramu’s toy shop and told her best friend, Jodi about it. Jodi
wondered if she could afford it.
Shanti smiled. “I asked my mom if I could make jasmine garlands(花环) and sell them at my
aunt’s stand in the market.” Jodi thought it was a good idea.
Early the next morming, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside Shanti’s house. Delicate
white flowers surrounded them with fresh scent. They picked blossoms with their fingers and then
sat under a mango tree, tying up the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already see herself hugging
that beautiful doll.
“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll.” said Shanti.
Jodi shook her head. Her family was low on money that week. She had to use her money to pay
for Kiran’s medicine. Kiran was Jodi’s little brother. Then Jodi picked up her garlands.“My mother is
expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market.”
Shanti spent the afternoon selling garlands alone. By early evening, Shanti had sold all her
flowers.
On the way home, Shanti saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. She was late
because she had to watch Kiran while her mother was away.
“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.
Jodi shook her head. “He’s too sick to go out. He coughs and coughs.”
Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now.The market would be
closing soon.
Shanti looked at the purse tightly held in her hand. It was supposed to be for the beautiful doll
she’d been dreaming of for long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here. Keep this for the
medicine.”
That night Shanti cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved
up enough again?

Our school held an art show entitled “Most Honored Worker” last week, to which our students and
teachers gave an active response.
The works submitted came in different forms of photos, paintings and handcrafts. All of them
told vivid stories of the beauty of diligence and persistence in different walks of life. Those present
at the show all gave a big applause to the works on display, saying that they learnt a lot from these
ordinary but honorable workers.

The next week, while Shanti and Jodi gathered blossoms, Kiran came, too. The medicine had
cured his cough, and he helped them sell out all the garlands. When parting, Jodi said, “Shanti, we
have prepared something for you.” But Shanti was so anxious that she didn’t seem to have time to
hear them out. She quickly ran to Ramu’s shop, only to find the dollhad been sold. Broken-hearted,
she ran back home and told Mom everything, tears flowing down in flood.
Mom comforted Shanti with hugs, and then handed her a filled package wrapped in paper. “Jodi
dropped this off for you, dear.” Shanti was surprised and unwrapped it. It was the doll! Also, she
found a note on the back of the doll: For our dearest friend, Shanti. Nothing can express our deepest
gratitude for your purest heart. Your sincere friendship will bethe most invaluable treasure for our
family. - From Jodi and Kiran. Shanti smiled. Hugging the doll, she felt so blessed about everything
that happened.
