Global fast-food giant McDonald's announced it would be phasing out ( 逐 步 淘 汰 ) plastic
straws in China. From June 30, nearly 1,000 stores in Beijing. Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen

I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but I've grown to enjoy lifting weights, and I've learned
from doing it. I enjoy the sense of strength and discipline that comes when the muscles are forced to
resist. I've tried varying schedules — lifting every day, every other day, two days on and a day off.
The every day approach was the least effective. I get the best strengthening results when I give
myself a break.
The same is true with mind and spirit. Without giving yourself a chance to reenergize, you
begin to break down all the connective fibers of your life. I used to just give myself Sundays off.
Now I'm scheduling downtime in the midst of everything — and “everything” includes two
magazines, building a house in Hawaii, working on an ABC movie — and, oh yeah, my day job.
Keeping it all straight was beginning to feel a little stressful. So I told myself that just because I have
ten free minutes on my calendar doesn't mean I want to fill them. Breathing space has to become part
of my daily routine.
So instead of having people lined up outside my office after the first show — I tape two a day
— I do nothing for at least ten minutes. The change has worked wonders. I have more energy, and
I'm in a better mood for the second show and all the business that comes afterward.
Now that I have the summer off to sit under the trees reading, napping, writing, and thinking , I
know for sure it’s time well spent. I’m refilling my tank so that by fall, when the new season begins,
I'll be fired up and ready for whatever is to come. Fully restored.
5.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To arouse the readers' concern.
B.To summarize the whole passage.
C.To state the importance of a good lifestyle.
D.To introduce the theme of the whole passage.
6.Which of the following does the author agree with?
A.Keeping everything straight. B.Resting at any time.
C.Taking breaks between tasks. D.Having a full schedule.
7.What does the underlined “it” in Para.2 refer to?
A.Everything. B.Building a house.
C.My day job. D.Working on a movie.
8.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Lifting weights changes peopled life. B.A little restoration helps go a long way.
C.Why people need to be in high spirits. D.Ten minutes' break will work wonders.

The new year always brings predictions. You know who gets them right?
BLUETOOTH
In his futuristic 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury anticipated Bluetooth, describing
wireless earphones that allowed for "an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk" to be
transferred through the air. Imagine how thrilled he would have been with a Bluetooth toaster! That
was the idea behind Griffin's Connected Toaster, which warned you via smartphone when your toast
was done. At $ 100, this baby cost a lot of bread, which may be why it was discontinued just two
years after launch.
SMART WATCH
The Apple Watch lets you chat, play games, and watch videos on a device fastened to your wrist.
Cool, huh? The Jetsons thought so… in 1962 — when Steve Jobs was still in second grade!
WI-FI
Nikola Tesla called it! In 1909, the famous electrical engineer told the New York Times, "It will
soon be possible to send wireless messages all over the world so simply that any individual can carry
and operate his own equipment." No doubt he was thinking of the Kérastase Hair Coach brush,
which measured brushing speed and employed a micro-phone to listen to your hair, all to compute an
overall hair-quality score sent to your smartphone. (Alas, it too is gone.)
GPS
Writer Arthur C.Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey) saw a world in which no one got lost. In
1956,he wrote that satellites “could make possible a position-finding grid (铁网) whereby anyone
could locate himself by means of a couple of dials on an instrument about the size of a watch.”
Clarke didn't mention that his system might also track another person, such as a criminal. Last year,
the New York City police arrested a robber who was wearing a GPS ankle monitor — because he
was still on probation (缓刑) for a prior crime.
9.Which of the predictions is the earliest?
A.BLUETOOTH. B.SMART WATCH,
C.WI-FI. D.GPS.
10.Why did Griffin's Connected Toaster disappear?
A.Too expensive. B.Out of date.
C.A little awkward D.Energy-consuming.
11.What was Clarke’s prediction?
A.A GPS ankle monitor. B.A robber-arresting instrument.
C.A watch that could see the world. D.An instrument that could locate a person.
D
A 63-year-old Chinese carpenter’s traditional skills have become an unexpected Internet hit as
he creates woodwork with a single piece of wood, without glue, screws or nails. Wang De wen,
known as “Grandpa Amu” on YouTube, has been praised as the modern day Lu Ban, a well-known
Chinese structural engineer during the Zhou Dynasty, thanks to his rich carpentry( 木 工 手 艺 )
knowledge.
Grandpa Amu’s most popular video, which shows him making a delicate wooden arch bridge,
has gone viral on YouTube, gaining more than 40 million views. “If you do something, you have to
love it, and you have to be interested in it; however, being interested doesn’t mean there’s only
happiness and no pain.” Grandpa Amu shared when talking about his excellent carpentry skills.
His most popular works include a folding stool, a model of the China pavilion from the 2010
Shanghai Expo, and an apple-shaped interlocking puzzle, known as a Lu Ban lock. Grandpa Amu
follows an ancient Chinese mortise and tenon(榫卯) technique, which means no nails or glue are
involved in the entire process of building the arch bridge.
The master carpenter has also made several wooden toys for his grandson using the same
technique. His young grandson’s favorites include a walking Peppa Pig and a bubble blowing
machine. Attracting over 1.17 million fans on YouTube, Grandpa Amu’s videos so far have gained
more than 200 million views.
His wonderful woodworking skills, using the same mortise and tenon joints found in the
Forbidden City, were developed from the age of thirteen as a way of supporting his family in East
China’s Shandong Province. “The grandson is so happy, as there have been so many fine and unique
toys made by grandpa from an early age,” commented one netizen; while another said “It’s amazing.
I hope these traditional crafts can be passed on!”
12.Why is Grandpa Amu regarded as the modern day Lu Ban?
A.For his simple words. B.For his popular videos.
C.For his carpentry skills. D.For his excellent arch bridge.
13.What do Grandpa Amu’s remarks mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Theory is from pracitce. B.Success depends on love.
C.Excellent skills lie in hard work. D.Happiness comes from interest.
14.What is the unique feature of Grandpa Amu’s craft works?
A.No nails or glue. B.Delicate design.
C.The apple shape. D.The wooden material.
15.What message does this text mainly convey?
A.Being popular means more fans. B.Perfect skills earn more money.
C.Supporting family needs more skills. D.Traditional crafts deserve passing on.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
Slash(斜杠)Careers
What is your job? Are you a teacher or a businessperson? Or maybe you are a lawyer/writer or a
teacher/photographer. 16.The term “slash career” comes from the punctuation mark(标识符)—a
slash that comes between job titles.
People with slash careers often have a primary job that provides for most of their needs. The
primary job usually comes before the slash.17.This secondary job can help supplement the person’s
income.
Why would anyone want more than one job? Some people look to their jobs for opportunities to
develop their interests. But most people have too many interests for one job. Secondary jobs can be
enjoyable if they include interests that the primary job doesn’t touch. Some people who encourage
slash careers say they actually help with work-life balance. 18.
On the other hand, a slash career can be dangerous for work-life balance. 19. One might give
up necessary things like relaxation, exercise or time with one’s family. People with slash careers
need to think carefully about how they use their time. This includes knowing when to stop working.
The clear advantage to slash careers is the extra income that secondary jobs provide. It’s always
helpful to have a little extra money to spend or to save.
20. With a slash career, losing one’s job does not mean losing one’s entire income. Or a
secondary job may be so successful that it can turn into one’s primary job.
If your interests stretch beyond your ordinary job, a slash career may work for you.
A.Slash careers provide extra money.
B.Slash careers also make one’s life more stable.
C.Working more than one job can fill up all of your time.
D.If you have more than one job, you have a slash career.
E.It shows the person is creative and willing to work hard.
F.The job after the slash is often based on a person’s interests.
G.That’s because they can give people an opportunity to express themselves.

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He
was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kirstie, come here," my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom,
holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. "Henry's book was in the bathtub. Did you put it
there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn't wet his
book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy.
My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother's love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结)
as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to
the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, "It's the first time for Henry to be onstage.
Be kind to him, Honey. I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn't use to be hard. But after Henry moved
in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With
Henry involved, it didn't seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while.
As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring
(束带)on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be
heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames.
However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

第二节
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my
skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me,
something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and
my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While
my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous
applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said
with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been
extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different.
“KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the
cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a
new person in my corner of the world after all.
