Every previous year on Thanksgiving Day I'd woken up early, filled with excitement, unable
to wait for the turkey, pumpkin pie with pecans, and my grandma's famous cheesecake. But I
would never forget the lesson that my mother taught me when I was 14 years old. That
Thanksgiving, I couldn't find the magic anymore. For some reason the holiday seemed fake (假的).
I suddenly felt like Thanksgiving was a big lie. I saw no reason to celebrate.
As my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandma started to arrive carrying plates of food, baskets
of bread, and pitchers of egg nog, I grew more and more angry and frustrated. None of them were
really thankful, I realized. The whole thing was a lie!
When my mom called for everyone to take their seats for dinner, I left. I ran into the guest
room where no one would look, crying. I was defiant (反抗的) because I wanted to be an honest
person but 1 was realizing that Thanksgiving was fake. It didn't feel right to join in the
tradition---say something beautiful one by one around the table.
My mom, worried that 1 was absent from the table, came to see what was wrong, "No one is
really thankful!" I sobbed, "They just pretend for one day because that's what you're supposed to
do!"
My mom sat down next to me and listened wisely. Then she nodded. “You’re right," she told
me, "it's fake until you find the truth for yourself." She said Thanksgiving was a time to reflect
because we don't always get a chance to see loved ones and eat a good meal. Then she left. I didn't
listen to her. I was convinced that I could never find joy celebrating again.

读后续写:
But I was also starving and I had to eat something. So after a few minutes I went back to
the dining room. And I couldn’t believe what I saw. Waiting for me, with wide smiles, was
my entire extended family and a table covered with untouched plates. At first, I was confused.
I wondered why no one was digging into their carefully-constructed meals. That’s when I
noticed that everyone was looking at me with concern. ‘Andy,’ my aunt said, ‘We can’t eat
without you. It’s your turn.’
At her words, I realized they wanted me to be a part of the tradition. As usual, we shared
what made us all thankful one by one around the table. I didn’t know what to say. But I had to.
Everyone had something beautiful to say. Listening, I came to understand what my mom
meant about finding the truth. For me, this holiday was a chance to pause and reflect on
everything I cared about. That was worth celebrating. And with that, I took a huge and
satisfying bite of food.

Located in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, Edgewood Elementary School has set up a crisis
response system that goes smoothly there. It has direct connection with agencies such as hospitals,
the police station. Many teachers there have given their personal phone numbers to students and
families in case they need extra help as well. There's no doubt that the primary school is famous
for its quickness in emergency response.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Smith began what was only her second year as
a first grade teacher in a virtual classroom at the school. One September afternoon a few weeks
into the school, she received a call from Mary White, who was having technical difficulties with
her granddaughter's tools for online learning.
Julia immediately knew something was wrong with Mary. The two women had spoken
numerous times before, but Julia had never heard the grandmother sound quite like this. Her
words were in such disorder that Julia could barely understand her, though she was able to make
out that Mary had fallen four times that day. "Was she going to have a stroke(中风)?" Julia
wondered.
Julia called her principal, Charlie Green, telling him her concern. From Julia, Green knew
that Mary's two grandchildren, aged four and six, were probably home alone with her---the kids'
parents were killed in a traffic accident several years ago and now she was their primary guardian.
Green assured her that he would call and check on Mary himself. Yet Julia still felt worried, so she
grabbed the handbag, rushing out.
Just like Julia, Green could barely understand Mary, but he was able to make out the word
"Kids". It called up his memories of his own father, who had suffered a stroke. Green still vividly
remembered the symptoms---sudden headaches, confusion, different vision, difficulty speaking
and unexpected falls---that his father had experienced. "Mary must be having a stroke," Green
thought to himself.

He realized it was an emergency.
When Green and the other two teachers reached the family's home less than ten minutes later,
seeing what was happening, they sighed in relief.
Green realized it was an emergency. Mary might faint at any time. If she couldn’t receive
timely help, she would suffer severe brain damage, or even die, which would definitely scare her
two grandchildren. Concerned that she was in such a critical situation where every minute
counted for her life, he immediately called the hospital to find her an ambulance. After being
informed of what was going on, two teachers dropped everything without delay, climbed into
Green’s car and set off. (75 words)
When Green and the other two teachers reached the family’s home less than ten minutes
later, seeing what was happening, they sighed in relief. Everything was well in order. The doctors
were giving first aid to Mary, pressing on her chest. The two kids looked visibly shaken, close to
tears. Beside them stood Julia, holding them in her arms and comforting them. Fortunately
enough, the quick response from Julia and Green saved Mary’s life. When she came to herself,
she was lifted to the ambulance and rushed to the hospital. Everybody’s face brightened up as
the ambulance faded away. (75 words)

I looked at my father's sugar-crusted hands, his shocked eyes, and I knew that I was breaking
his heart. It was the worst time to say anything,to just blurt(脱口而出)it out like this while we
were cooking and preparing the house for guests—especially because my father was busy doing
the one thing that I was about to tell them that I would never do.But I couldn't hold it in any longer,
and I needed to say something now, otherwise I would just be delaying the inevitable and probably
have an anxiety-caused breakdown in the meantime.
We were standing in the kitchen while my family was scattered around the living room
tidying up, pretending not to listen and clearly listening: Soft footsteps approached, and my
mother was now with us in the kitchen."What is this, Beta?""she said. She was shocked;I was
ashamed.
"I'm sorry,"I said miserably."But I can't do it.I'm not good at cooking. Everything I touch
comes out wrong, and tastes terrible. Even the simple ladoos(印度甜品)I try to make fall apart.
"You have to practice,Beta,,my father exploded."You don't practice enough! All you do is sit
in your room, and write in that journal..."
"I want to be a writer."I cried out what had been reverberating(回荡)in my mind for the last
three years.
My parents were astonished."The sweet store is your duty, Beta.Your duty to your family.
We're counting on you because you are our daughter."my father speaked as though this was all that
needed to be said.
My heart sank
My father gave me a hard look."When your grandfather comes over for dinner,"he warned,"
don't say a word to him."
"He's still recovering from his surgery,"my mother added severely.
My father turned back to shaping the ladoos."We'll discuss this later,"he said abruptly, and the
conversation was over.
When the rest of the family came over that evening, I found myself sitting next to my
grandfather.Everyone laughed and joked except me.When there was a period of quietness in the
conversation,my grandfather said,"Beta, come with me to the kitchen."

读后续写
Once we reached the kitchen, he asked me what was wrong. I wanted to tell him
everything, but didn’t want to disappoint him the way I had disappointed my parents.
Furthermore, my mother’s comment about his surgery was on my mind. So I shook my head. At
that moment, my father came into the kitchen. My grandfather looked at him, concerned, and
then asked the same question. My father froze momentarily and then assured him with a big
smile that I was just tired. Then he grabbed my arm to drag me away.
But my grandfather stopped him with a look, and gently laid a hand on my arm. Suddenly,
I couldn’t contain my feeling and burst into tears. I looked at him and sobbingly said, “I don’t
want to make sweets. I don’t want to run the store.” My grandfather stood quietly for a moment,
absorbing this; then he looked at me and said simply, “Then you will not make sweets.” “But
what else can she do?” my father said, frustrated. “Well, she’s an excellent storyteller. I imagine
she’ll be a writer,” my grandfather said.

The day of my big solo (独唱) had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom and dad and
my little brother. Uncle Scott and Auntie Tammy had even picked up my grandma from the
nursing home so she wouldn’t miss the big event.
My name was on the cover of the program in bright yellow with a daisy chain drawn around
it. “Cindy Hamond ... Soloist.”
I couldn’t believe it when I saw my name. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn’t Renee
Swanson’s.
Renee and I had been classmates since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she
was always ahead of me.
Dance-class recital needs a big finish? Renee was picked.
Selling Girl Scout cookies? “Oh, I’m sorry,” the lady at the front door would say. “I just
bought twenty boxes from Renee Swanson. Such a nice girl.” Yeah, whatever.
Softball? She played first base while I watched her from my position in the outfield.
The day of the choir concert tryouts (选拔) was nerve wracking. We waited in the library
while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jenkins called my name,
my whole body was shaking.
When I came back to the library Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and she
calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.
Ms. Jenkins made the announcement at the end of the week of who had made the special
choral group. I wasn’t surprised when Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said
under my breath, “what else is new?”
Sudden clapping brought me out of my sulking (郁闷). Everyone was looking at me.
Ms. Jenkins looked at me and said, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me during
your study halls since the solos take extra preparation.”
Solo? I got the solo? I glanced over at Renee. She grinned (露齿而笑) and gave me the
thumbs-up sign.

【答案】When the day came, we filed onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center.
The spotlight flicked over me and then circled me in its bright light. I took a deep breath, opened
my mouth and sang out as loudly as I could. All that came out was a rusty-sounding squeak. But in
that same moment, from behind me, came the pure tone of the right note. Renee gave me a gentle
poke. My voice lifted and matched hers. The rest of the solo went well. And when the concert was
over, the applause was thunderous.
When we filed off the stage, my family met me with praise and hugs and Renee was next to
hug me. It felt awkward. “Thanks, Renee,” was all I could get myself to say. Renee flashed me her
usual sunny smile. “It was nothing. You’ve always been there for me. All these years and all the
things we’ve done together!” Renee gave me another hug. I began to like the feeling of being her
friend. This time I hugged her. “That’s what friends are for.”

When I spent the last summer with my grandmother in Warwick, N.Y., she sent
me down to the grocery store with a long shopping list. Staring at all the items on the
list, I wondered how I could find anything on the packed shelves around me. But she
insisted.
I walked up to the counter. Behind it was a lady like no one I'd ever seen. Thick
glasses rested on the tip of her nose, gray hair was piled on her head.
“Excuse me,” I said. She looked up.
“You're that Clements kid,” she said. “I'm Miss Bee. Come closer and let me
get a look at you.” She pushed her glasses up her nose. “I want to be able to describe
you to the policeman if something goes missing from the store.”
“I'm not a thief!” I was shocked. I was too young to be a thief!
“Maybe not, but I can tell you've got potential.” She went back to reading her
newspaper.
“I need to get these,” I said, holding up my list.
“So? Go get them.” She ignored my need of a favour. “There's no one here
except you and me and I'm not your servant, so I suggest you start looking for the
things on that list.”
The store was a puzzle to a sevenyearold, and it seemed to hold all the goods
in the world. I complained about this task Grandma had set me to do while trying to
find all the items on my list. It took me one and half an hour to do it, and the mean
lady behind the counter didn't even bother to look at me once.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Sometimes she sold me
an old newspaper instead of one that was the latest. Sometimes she overcharged me
and didn't seem embarrassed when I pointed it out. Going to the store was more like
going into battle, but I survived. By summer's end the shopping trip that had once
taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I
stopped in to get a soda.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
“All right, Miss Potential,” she said. “What did you learn this summer?”“That you're
mean!” Finally I said it, thinking that I didn't have to deal with her again. To my amazement,
Miss Bee laughed. “I know what you think of me,” she continued. “Well, I don't care! Each of
us is put on this earth for a reason. I believe my job is to teach every child I meet some life lessons
to help them.” Embarrassed as I felt, I wasn't capable of appreciating the lessons she claimed she
had given me at such a young age, and I only wished that I had never met her. After checking out,
I left.
Paragraph 2:
One day after all those years my seven year old daughter came to me with homework
troubles.“It's too hard,”she complained.“Could you finish my maths problems for me?” “If
I do it for you how will you ever learn to do it yourself?” I responded. Suddenly, I was back at
the grocery store where I had learned the hard way to deal with my own business. Had I ever been
overcharged since? As my daughter went back to her homework, I wondered: Had Miss Bee really
taught me something all those years ago? Sure enough, she didn't act as a servant but she inspired
potential in a sevenyearold.
