Kirk Alexander, 48, of Salem, Oregon ordered a late dinner from his local Domino's pizza store. He had no signature order. Sometimes he would call for a salad, sometimes a pie, sometimes chicken wings. The only sure thing for the staff of the Silverton Road Domino's was that they would see Alexander's name show up on their online ordering site sometime between 11 p. m. and midnight several times a week. Until suddenly, for nearly two weeks at the end of April 2016, they didn't. It was a slow Saturday night on May 7th when Domino's general manager Sarah Fuller felt she could no longer ignore Alexander's recent absence. “I went and looked up to see how long it had been since he last ordered,” Fuller told KATU. com. “It was 11 days, which was not like him at all.” Fuller knew Alexander worked from home, and neighbors said he rarely left. She also knew that he had suffered some health issues in the past. Something, Fuller worried, was wrong. Around 1 a. m. on Sunday. May 8, Fuller sent longtime delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to stop in at Alexander's home. Hamblen approached Alexander's door as he had countless times before and knocked. He could plainly see that Alexander's TV set was on, as were his lights; but after several minutes, Alexander still didn't answer the door. Hamblen rushed back to the store to relay the upsetting developments to Fuller. She encouraged Hamblen to dial 911. Soon, officers were on their way. When deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's office arrived at Alexander's house, they heard a man “calling for help from inside the residence, deputies said. They broke the door down, and found Alexander on the floor in need of immediate medical attention. One day later, and they might have been too late. Alexander was rushed to Salem Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition shortly after the dramatic rescue. In the following weeks, Fuller, Hamblen, and other store employees went to visit him with flowers and cards, noting that Alexander greeted them with knowing smiles. 4. How did Fuller sense that something was wrong? A. She knew Alexander had serious health problems. B. Alexander hadn't ordered chicken wings for nearly 2 weeks. C. Alexander had never before broken his routine in the store for 10 years. D. Alexander had disappeared from the store's ordering system for about 2 weeks. 5. What can you infer from the underlined sentence? A. Hamblen was fond of knocking at Alexander's door. B. Hamblen was more than an acquaintance to Alexander. C. Every time Hamblen arrived at Alexander's house, he would knock first. 试卷第 4 页 共 15 页 D. When Hamblen had enough time in the past, he would go to Alexander's house. 6. In which column of a newspaper will you probably read this article? A. Life. B. Technology. C. Healthy. D. Entertainment. 7. The saying we can learn from the story is . A. Born in distress, die in peace B. Details determine success or failure C. Even the wise are not always free from error D. Better late than never 【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. Kirk Alexander, 48, of Salem, Oregon ordered a late dinner from his local Domino's pizza store. He had no signature order. Sometimes he would call for a salad, sometimes a pie, sometimes chicken wings. The only sure thing for the staff of the Silverton Road Domino's was that they would see Alexander's name show up on their online ordering site sometime between 11 p. m. and midnight several times a week.(十多年来几乎每晚,俄勒冈州塞勒姆 48 岁的 Kirk Alexander 都会在当地的达美乐披萨店点了一份 晚餐。他没有指定要什么吃的。有时他要沙拉,有时要派,有时要鸡翅。对西弗顿路达美乐的员工来说,唯一 可以肯定的是,他们会在每周几次的晚上 11 点到午夜的某个时间看到亚历山大的名字出现在他们的在线订购网 站上)”以及画线部分上文“Around 1 a. m. on Sunday. May 8, Fuller sent longtime delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to stop in at Alexander's home.(周日 5 月 8 日凌晨 1 点左右,Fuller 让长期送货司机 Tracey Hamblen 去了 Alexander 的家)”可推知,Alexander 经常点外卖,而 Hamblen 是派送员,所以可推测 Hamblen 跟 Alexander 十分熟识。 故选 A。 根据第四段“It was a slow Saturday night on May 7th when Domino's general manager Sarah Fuller felt she could no longer ignore Alexander's recent absence.(5 月 7 日,这是一个周六晚上,时间过得很慢,达美乐的总 经理 Sarah Fuller 觉得她不能再忽视 Alexander 最近的缺席了)”可知,外卖店经理通过细心观察,察觉到了顾客 Kirk 点餐习惯发生的变化,最后救了 Kirk 的命,告诉了我们“细节决定成败”的道理。故选 B。 C Kursat Ceylan is blind. He once walked into a pole and cut open his forehead. This inspired him and his partner to come up with a cane that had AI built-in, named WeWalk. This would then detect any objects that might be above chest- level. The AI is also able to pair up with various systems, including Google Maps, Amazon Alexa and more. Of course, the smart cane itself can only integrate with AI functions on a basic level right now but the overall aim is to gather information from various sensors that WeWalk have been installed (安装). It can then use data to find out how visually damaged people use the product and how they behave so that a far more complicated product can be created in the form of advanced AI. It should be noted that this isn’t meant to be a simple smart cane. It’s supposed to be connected with transportation networks and even autonomous vehicles. The general idea is that WeWalk would eventually be able to interact with traffic lights so that people can then cross roads without having to push a button. They would also be able to alert (报警) buses so that they can then wait at a stop ahead of time. Innovations like this would be more than welcome but they would fall short of some of the dreams that were once inspired by AI. People once thought that AI would be able to form logical connections and even change the world. Right now it hasn’t really done that, but scientists are working on it. Only time will tell if this is ever going to be the case but right now it looks like there is a lot being done to try and make sure that the world of tech and healthcare are being benefited and for all of the right reasons. 8. What is special about WeWalk? A. It is very long. B. It is very strong. C. It is intelligent. D. It is portable. 9. What can WeWalk do now? A. Control the user’s behavior. B. Perform some simple tasks. C. Detect any objects ahead of the user. D. Protect the user from being attacked. 10. What does paragraph 3 mainly want to tell us? A. Reasons for the application of WeWalk. B. WeWalk’s influence on people’s lives. C. The working principles of WeWalk. D. Some potential uses of WeWalk. 11. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. More efforts are being made to improve AI. B. People have benefited a lot from AI. C. People shouldn’t expect too much of AI. D. The author is worried about the future of AI. 根据文章第一段第三句“come up with a cane that had AI built-in”,可知 WeWalk 的特 别之处在于内置了 AI 人工智能。故选 C。 9. 由第二段“the smart cane itself can only integrate with AI functions on a basic level right now”可知,目前 WeWalk 的智能还处于初级阶段。故选 B。 10. A。 D Cigarettes aren't just harmful when they're being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24 hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine (尼古丁) that an actively burning cigarette would produce. While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out, an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later. "I was absolutely surprised," says environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). "The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter." To measure emissions(排放) from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2, 100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends were sealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so. After setting the room's temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays (烟灰缸) out for days at a time, especially in the heat. 12. What do the researchers say about cigarette ends? A. They contain little nicotine. B. They produce no nicotine 5 days later. C. They give off nicotine for days. D. They create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes. 13. What do Poppendieck's words suggest? A. First-hand smoking does most harm. B. The findings are within his expectation. C. Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors. D. Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored. 14. Which word best describes the authors attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days? A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Unconcerned. D. Puzzled. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Used Cigarette Ends Release Harmful Chemicals B. Cigarettes Are More Harmful While Being Smoked C. Research Found Reasons for Cigarette Ends' Harm D. Cigarette Ends Produce More Chemicals in the Heat 【答案】12-15 CDBA 【解析】 12. While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out, an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later"可知, 烟熄灭后,尼古丁的浓度在五天以后仅下降一半,也就是说熄灭的烟蒂好几天都会释放尼古丁。 故选 C。 13. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter"可知,尽管人们很关注一手烟、二手烟对健康的影响,现在也关注了三手烟对健康的影响,但当谈到烟蒂 试卷第 8 页 共 15 页 对健康的影响时,情况就并非如此了。 When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates"可知,温度高时,烟蒂释放有害的化学物质的速度更快,再根据 "This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays(烟灰缸)out for days at a time, especially in the heat" 可知,这个发现可能会打消那些人好几天尤其是在高温情况下都放着烟灰缸不管的念头。 故选 A。 Here's the scenario(场景): You've got an article to write on an interesting topic. You have more than enough time to meet your deadline and an editor lined up to perfect your words. There's one big problem, though. The words won't come. You've got writer's block. 16. And your deadline, which seemed generous at first, is starting to close in on you. Every writer has been there. What can you do about it? 17 . Science says that's when writers are most creative and least likely to be distracted. But when you're completely stuck, going straight into writing first thing in the morning might not work. Why not start your day with something you're excited about? It'll be more fun and make you feel productive. Smoothly as the morning unfolds, writer's block may linger(逗留). While faced with it, we find the best approach is to break your task up into chunks. 18. With this one little step, you've accomplished something and you're one step closer to meeting that deadline. Then, do some reading, make a list of any ideas you find interesting, and use your list to create a rough outline. 19. The draft may still need some polishing, but you're most of the wav there now! Besides, writing is more than putting words on paper. It's also about thinking. You should feel free to walk away when you need to have some quality “thinking time”. If you use these breaks to do something productive, you won't think of it as time wasted. 20. You'll get fresh air and exercise—which are both known to be good for creativity—and your colleagues will thank you. A.Take a walk outside with a pen and paper. B.You've been staring at a blank page for days. C.That can help to reduce the difficulty of writing. D.Here's an idea: offer a coffee run for your colleagues. E.Start with something small, like creating a new folder. F.Writers are often told they should write early in the morning. G.Turn it into sentences and paragraphs and you'll have a draft. 第二段第二句中的 that 和第三句中的 going straight into writing first thing in the morning 都是在讲 早间写作。 前一句中 break your task up into chunks,说明此段的建议是将写作工作化整为零、进行分解。 If you use these breaks to do something productive, you won’t think of it as time wasted. You’ll get fresh air and exercise—which are both known to be good for creativity—and your colleagues will thank you. D 选项 offer a coffee run for your colleagues 意为帮同事跑腿儿买杯咖啡。 A Chicago woman's act of kindness helped homeless people stay warm. It is located in an area of thick forest two miles from the highway. My phone did not work in that area and what was worse. I had no satellite guidance. Christine had drawn me a simple map but I did not recognize anything as I drove along the rough, narrow roads. There were no street lights and it was completely dark. Suddenly a deer ran in front of my car. I could not stop in time and hit it. As I did, my car went off the road and down a small hill. I hadn’t seen other cars either in front of me or behind me. There was no way that I could contact anyone. I was alone. I was able to move and get out of the car but my leg was injured. The pain was horrible and I could not walk at all. No one was there. I began to worry, but my good sense warned me to think. It was summer, so at least I would not freeze to death. Since I was not familiar with the area, maybe there would be more people coming along in the daylight. Maybe I could somehow struggle up to the road and get help. I had to wait. Fortunately, I crawled(爬行)back in and slept in the back seat of my car. I could not be beaten by fear. Yes, I was frightened. but I was sure that someone would help me. The next morning I woke up with the sound of someone knocking at the window. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ I drove to Christine’s cabin the following day. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ One possible version: The next morning, I woke up with the sound of someone knocking at the window. To-my excitement, I could recognize a friendly face of a policeman through the window and I realized I was saved. After a brief check on my physical condition, the policeman quickly sent me to a nearby hospital. Luckily, the doctor said the injury on my leg was not serious and suggested a good rest in the hospital. After getting enough sleep that night, I felt much better and I was ready for my next trip. I drove to Christine’s cabin the following day. This time I was well-prepared before setting off. Not only did I search the route in advance, but also I got a satellite guidance for my car. Obviously, it was much easier to drive during the day. It was not long before I arrived at Christine’s cabin smoothly and I began to tell her about my adventurous trip. The experience witnessed our friendship. What’s more, it reminded me to be well prepared for everything I wanted to achieve.
