It was a hot June day, and Sammy Armstrong couldn't wait to get in the water. The
ten-year-old was on a camping trip at McKinney Falls State Park with his mom, Kelley, his
dad, Stacey, and his brothers, Ben, eight, and Willy, two.
Around 11 a.m., Sammy's mother and little brother Ben dropped the boat into Onion Creek,
a river travelling through the park's 750 acres, and went in for a short trip. Sammy and Willy
accompanied their dad to Upper Falls, which marks the point where Onion Creek falls 12 feet
over a rock ledge (岩架).At the top of the waterfall, a pathway made of white stones crosses
the river bed. Below is a swimming hole, 20 feet deep in some places.
With his father watching from the rocks above, Sammy jumped in. He was a good
swimmer — he'd been on the swim team in his hometown of Cypress, Texas. Sammy played
in the water for a while, eventually pulling himself out and onto a large warm rock and
watching a group of children walk through the river bed above. They were summer campers
from Austin who were headed back to the visitors' parking lot after a morning hike. As the
kids passed Stacey and Willy, a tiny five-year-old girl reached down to grab a water bottle
and lost her balance. In an instant, she was swept over the falls.
"A girl went over the waterfall!" Stacey shouted. Sammy caught a glance of the girl's arm
and the top of her dark head as the roiling currents pushed her into the low area beneath the
rock ledge, hiding her from the crowd above. She struggled in the deep water. "I'm shocked
and afraid at this point," Sammy says now. His father, with Willy under one arm, walked
toward the edge of the waterfall to try to locate the girl, but Sammy was the one within
striking distance. "You have to get her out of there!" Stacey yelled down to him.

Paragraph 1:
The ten-year-old was nervous and took a few seconds to consider the situation. Then he
dived in, cutting through the waterfall. In a few seconds, he was next to the struggling girl.
Panicky, she tried to climb on top of him. Sammy went under for a little while, and then came
back up. Staying an arm's length away from the girl, he asked her if she could swim. When
she said no, Sammy carefully pulled her onto his back and swam toward the shore.
Paragraph 2:
Soon, someone came and puled both kids away from the water. The little girl lay on the
ground, coughing and too frightened to cry. When Kelley walked onto the scene after her trip
with Ben, she saw the crowd gathered near the swimming hole, and her heart sank. Then a
woman came up and told her Sammy had saved a girl's life. Relieved, she hurried to Sammy's
side and gave him a big hug. "You are my pride and joy," she whispered in his ear.

Love Will Melt Your Heart
The day before my daughter Norah’s fourth birthday, something she said forecast
remarkable event.I’d just picked her up from preschool when she cautioned me to mind the
elderly person walking across the parking lot at a glacier’s pace. She went on to explain that
she has a soft spot for mature folks: “I like old people the best because they walk slowly like I

do and they have soft skin like me. They’re all going to die soon, so I’ll love them before they
die.” I was struck by her thoughtfulness and empathy.
The following day — her birthday — again on the way home from school, she asked
if we could stop at the grocery store to buy cupcakes. How do you say no to a birthday girl?
So we headed toward the bakery and picked up the cupcakes. As I was distracted by a
clearance shelf, Norah was busy standing up in the cart, excitedly waving and joyfully
proclaiming, “Hi, old person! It’s my birthday today!”
Before I could hush her, he stopped and turned to her. His expression softened as he
replied, “Well, hello, little lady! Happy birthday!” They chatted for a few minutes. Then,
Norah turned to me and asked, “Can I take a picture with him?” I told her we’d certainly ask.
I approached him and asked if he’d take a photo with my daughter for her birthday. His
expression changed from confused to stunned to delighted, “A photo? With me?” he asked.
“Yes, sure, for my birthday!” Norah answered. And so he did, I pulled out my iPhone, and
they posed together. She placed her soft hand on top of his. He wordlessly stared at her with
twinkling eyes as she kept his hand in hers, kissed the top of his hand and then placed it on
her cheek. They were chatting like long-lost friends. I asked his name, and he told us to call
him Dan. We were blocking other shoppers, but they didn’t care. There was magic happening
in the grocery store that day, and we could all feel it.

Paragraph 1:
After a few minutes, I thanked Mr. Dan for spending a bit of his day with us. With tears in his
eyes, he said, “No, thank you. This is the best day I’ve ever had in a long time.” With a kind
and good-humored spirit, he turned to my daughter. “Look! How much pleasure you've
brought to me, Miss Norah.” They gave each other a loving hug and Norah watched him until
he was out of view. I was blown away by this meeting and posted the story and a photo of
them on my Facebook. Later that night, I received a private message, from which I learned
that Mr. Dan’s wife, Mary, had passed away six months earlier, and he had been lonely and
depressed since then. I asked for Mr. Dan's phone number and planned to pay a visit some
day.
Paragraph 2:
A few days later, we visited Mr. Dan’s tidy house. We spent nearly three hours with him that
day. He was patient and kind with my talkative, constantly moving girl. Actually after the
visit, Norah was still concerned about Mr. Dan, every day asking about his health and hoping
that he could feel loved. So was Mr. Dan. During another recent visit, he told me that he had
slept soundly every night since meeting my girl. “Norah has healed me,” he said. That left me
speechless and my cheeks wet with tears. Seventy-eight years separate these two people in
age. Somehow, their hearts and souls seem to have recognized each other from long ago.

I was doing a big clean-up recently and my kids were helping when my son, Freddo,
came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin inside. “Mom, can I have
this? Can I play with this coin?” he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported
to another time.
In 1991, there was a time when my friend and I worked in an African country, Niger, hit
by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this
place---the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of

nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic in a neighboring country, Burkina
Faso. “It's much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better,” the locals assured us.
Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we
began to unload. I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness, a
motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of them grabbed my
daypack as the motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the pair were out of sight,
swallowed up by the night.
With my passport, money, traveler's checks all in the bag, I was in deep trouble. How
frustrating! All I wanted was to leave this place! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one
day, I was stopped by an old woman who thrust(猛推)her hand in my face. “Cadeau(‘gift’
in French)! Cadeau!” she cried. I'd had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its
poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and... everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French,
“I have no ‘cadeau’. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I
can’t get out of your country. I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!” The beggar woman
listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave a broad smile.

Paragraph 1:
She reached into the pocket of her dress. “Then I will give you a cadeau,” she announced.
Kindly, she placed an old, dark brown coin in my hand. In surprise, I looked at the coin, then
at the woman. At that moment, I felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude toward
the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me something priceless. I had
taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from
the beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view toward them, and her smile hit the
deepest of my heart.
Paragraph 2:
There was a slight touch on my hand; looking down, I saw my son looking at me, curious.
“Mom, can I have this? Car I play with this coin?” he repeated. “You can't play with it, honey,”
I touched my son on the head and said slowly. “This one is special. It is an unforgettable
precious memory to me. Come and let me tell you a story.”

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up
in all directions. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of
two hundred people."Not for a million dollars," I would have said. But when the time came, I
got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and discovered I could do more than I ever
gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person
who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my
personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or
say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I
did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I

could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories,
I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go
after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my
inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had
written." I'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to
be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?"
A few excited hands shot up-mine, of course, was not one of them-and Mrs Sather smiled."
We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left
the classroom.

Paragraph 1:
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Mrs. Sather
stared into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. ''I would love you to give
this a try for me. But if you really don't want to, I won’t make you. It is your choice. '' Mrs.
Sather wanted me in this role. She shocked me, for I was always a shy person, not even dare
to speak loud in public.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing Mrs Sather's words, I realized it was time to make a change. I decided to throw
off my shy cloak. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After
seconds of hesitation, I nodded my head, confidently saying ''Mrs Sather I want to, no, I am
determined to play the role. And I will try my best to perform it well.'' Looking at me with a
big smile on face, Mrs Sather said ''I believe in you. If you met some problem, you can turn to
me.'' ''Thank you! '' I left her office happily.

The story of my new family member
We found a lonely dog a few weeks ago, walking along the road in the countryside. All
of a sudden, he was jumping on cars, and at the same time we thought maybe his family was
camping somewhere in the neighboring areas. As a consequence we passed him by without
hesitation. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again and again,
making an attempt to get people to stop for him. When he caught sight of us approaching, he
lay down in the middle of the road, so we failed to get around him.
My father braked hard, pulled up and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure
out whether anyone around from whom he had been separated. After getting off the car, we
checked the dog carefully. It didn’t appear so. Then we took a good look at the poor but cute
dog. He gazed at us eagerly with gloomy eyes. We circled around him in a total silence. We
had an overwhelming desire to find out what was wrong with him. Unfortunately, we couldn’t
find any clues. He had no collar and he was really too thin. Eventually we decided that he had
been abandoned. We showed great sympathy for the poor dog. How helpless he was on such
an occasion! He was homeless and he had no one to rely on.
On seeing the scene, we couldn’t help begging my parents to raise him. My mother
agreed excitedly, “I love this lovely dog. How poor he is! It is high time that we should bring
him home.” She stared at the dog with tears welling up in her eyes. We knew my mother was
willing to adopt the dog because she was so sweet and she loved dogs very much. My father
thought it was dangerous to raise a dog due to the fact that we were too young.

My father said firmly, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car,
then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all, the only thing we
were in danger of was getting licked. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats
and thanked us for picking him up. The dog had clearly been on the road for some time, he
was really too thin. So we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks striving to look
after him with the hope that he would get stronger. Unfortunately, all our efforts were in vain.
He was still very thin.
Paragraph 2:
We took him to the vet, who said the dog appeared to be in good health. The vet guessed
the dog was about two years old. He gave the dog all the required shots and sent us on our
way. “Amazing! The dog is healthy.” My mother said in an excited voice. So thrilled were we
that we headed home immediately. We did love our new family member. The dog was a sweet
companion to our family, who was a quick learner and knew how to respond to different
instructions. We learned a lesson from the experience that kindness and sympathy made a big
difference to our life.

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers,
40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my
niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let
them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn
how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers
would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try.
So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street
with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up
to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway
for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the
flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate
cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As
they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever
seen.

【答案】
With just one flower left I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then,
my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very
person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,”
said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to
her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the
kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers,
and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves,
but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being
friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact,
they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more
flowers!

Anyone going to an amusement park might have seen the likes of me. I held purses,
cellphones and sunglasses while others threw themselves on roller coasters. I admit their
bravery, but refuse to challenge my own limitations.
One day when we were at the Wonderland Amusement Park in Toronto, My friends tried
to get me to ride a roller coaster. But the click, click, click of the cars climbing up the tracks
made me fear. The stop at the top, before falling with people’s screams, seemed terrible.
My friends were still trying to persuade me, and I was still saying no, when I suddenly
saw a familiar face, one I had never seen outside a television set. It was Jennifer Capriati, a
popular tennis star at the top of her game, already winning titles at the age of fourteen. She
was my heroine. I pulled out a pen and the only paper that I could find and walked to her.
She was weaving her way through a rope that led to a ride called the Jet Scream. I was
running quickly because I didn’t want to pass up the chance to meet her face to face, but I
was also a bit nervous. So I waited at the exit to calm down and get closer to her as she came
off the ride.
Several minutes later, she got out from the exit, laughing and talking with her brother. I

mine. Our eyes actually met. “Would you mind signing for me?” I asked, handing the pen and

I was walking down the muddy road one day when my cell phone rang. A child's voice
on the other end spoke to me softly, "Dad, please come hack soon. I miss you so much!”
Unconsciously, I knew it was a wrong number once again. I don’t have a single daughter. I
just have a six-year-old son. It is not unusual to receive this kind of calls nowadays, so I
replied rudely, "You've dialed the wrong number!” and then hung up in anger.
During the following days, I got the same call now and then. It disturbed me, so I either
rejected her or hung up right away rudely. I couldn’t help complaining about this, “What an
impolite girl! How can she call me up over and over again?” How 1 wished the little girl
would stop causing any trouble to me some day! Suddenly, the phone rang up again. It was
from the same girl- It seemed that she would not give up until she got an answer.
She constantly called me up. Even if I did not give her an answer, she still dialed my
number from time to time. Eventually I unwillingly answered the phone. 1 heard the weak
voice of that little girl, “Dad, please come back now. I miss you so much! Mom told me this
was not a wrong number. It is your cell phone number, right? Dad, I am in so much pain!
Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. She is tired out from looking after me. Dad, I
know you are busy. If you cannot come home, please kiss me again in the phone, OK?” The
innocent request was difficult to reject. I made a loud kiss into the phone and heard a weak
voice saying, “Thank you.... Dad, I am so... happy, so …happy

【答案】(One possible version)
Shortly after this, I became interested in who had been on the other end of my phone.
When I called the number back, a woman answered, “Sorry, sir. I am really sorry to bother
you. I did want to call to apologize.” From the woman, I learnt that the girl had bone cancer
when she was born, and unfortunately her father died in an accident weeks ago. The little girl
suffered from unbearable treatment every day. Feeling painful, she would cry for her dad who
had always encouraged her, so her mother gave her a random number.
I couldn’t wait to ask the woman how her daughter was. The woman thought for a while,
saying sadly, “She has gone. You must have kissed her on the phone, and she went with a
smile as she tightly held the cell phone with which she could hear her voice...” On hearing
this, I couldn’t keep back my sad feeling, tears streaming down my cheeks. I didn’t know
what to say, so I slowly hang up my phone, praying for her happiness and health in heaven.

The story began with a young mother who had three sons in a big city. Unfortunately, the
youngest son developed slow thinking skills, not having the intelligence of his brothers. With
double duty as the mother of the household, she was exhausted, so that the youngest was
often the target of anger and annoyance. Bad words, such as "you little fool” and the like,
served as a daily meal for the youngest.
The words and curses he got from the mother and ridicule (嘲笑) from friends convinced
him that he was distressing (使痛苦) and embarrassing his family. Every morning he woke up
with his own face staring from the mirror reflection, he started to say quietly and sadly, “The
fool is going to school.”
As adult citizens, there was compulsory military service which should be lived. Thus,
the youngest son also signed up and started to follow the various tests: a medical, physical
ability test and other tests. On the day of the announcement, he was called into the board of
examiners.
In his mind, he convinced himself that he was the fool and couldn’t pass the tests this
time as he entered the room with his head down. It was not expected at all. The tests turned
out to have the highest praise from the board of examiners.
“Congratulations, young man! Your test results are incredible! You are really a great and
talented young man.” Words from the board of examiners became the discovery of a new side
of himself that was not known in advance. Voice kept echoing in his mind, such as “I, the
great man, am in the shower”, “The great man washes his face”, “The talented young man

【答案】One possible version:
He decided to join the military and was sent to the front. Every day he was going
through a hail of bullets. He couldn’t remember how many times he had risen to his feet in
the combats. Surrounded by the brutal realities of war while creeping forward with difficulty
in the battlefield, a voice kept echoing in his mind. “I, the great man, am in the war”, “The
great man is going to conquer his fear”, and “the great man can hold out a little longer”. With
the strong belief and courage, he succeeded in winning the war and defending his country
with his comrades.
Ten years later, the man went back to his hometown. The youngest son who had been
considered a fool received warm welcome. He was admired and won great respect from other
people. And he quickly became the focus of much media attention. During an interview with
the reporters, he mentioned with a smile, "At first I was not what I am, but the tests changed
my life, which made me build up confidence so that I can face difficulties bravely.” He
paused significantly for a while and added, “The discovery of a new side of myself is the
power behind the success that is within me. And most importantly, it was my confidence that
made me discover my own strength to overcome all the difficulties I encountered and triumph
over the tough journey.”
