I've been writing since before I could write. As a kid, I dictated stories to my parents.About 12 years ago,I was
living in New York City and pursuing a master in creative writing. For years I'd been suffering vision disorder, but in
New York my symptoms worsened. I became unable to read or write for any considerable length of time. I tried vision
therapy(疗法),an overhead projector,a special pair of glasses-all in vain.
Eventually,I discovered a computer program for the visually challenged. As I typed,my words were read aloud by
an automated voice. With my screen dimmed to black,I relied entirely on audio feedback to know what I had written.
Facing the blank page is worrying, but facing the black page is worse. The dark screen is a sinkhole that swallows
creative hope. Sentences disappear into it like an astronaut into a black hole. I managed to complete my master degree,
but it took me years to adapt to my new reality. The greatest barrier seemed to be the automated voice, which was like a
robot parrot on my shoulder, and I wanted nothing more than to drive it away. If a pianist were forced to practice on an
untuned piano, would it corrupt his ear over time?
Of course,I could have quit writing and stopped making myself suffer. But it honestly never occurred to me-and I'm
glad it didn't. Last year, after I told my story on the radio,I was contacted by VocaliD,a Massachusetts-based company
that created a voice modeled on my own.
The first time I heard the voice they created, it is so close to my own that the two are nearly indistinguishable. I've
only just begun using this new voice. My hope is that this will restore a sense of solitude( 孤 独 ) to my writing
process, allowing me easier access to that inner space where the imagination can take over, and I can forget myself, and
the real work can begin.
The black screen still exists-it always will-but the robot parrot has taken wing.
4.What happened to the author when pursuing a master degree in New York?
A.His sight started to fail due to much reading.
B.His eyes couldn't sustain long hours of reading.
C.He had to drop out due to his vision disorder.
D.He successfully overcame his vision problem.
5.What still bothered the author after he got his master degree?
A. The untuned automated voice. B.The pet parrot on his shoulder.
C.The computer with a dark screen. D.The noise from a neighboring pianist.
6. How did the author feel when first hearing the voice created by VocaliD?
A. Excited. B.Annoyed. C.Unmoved. D.Relaxed.
7.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The automated voice is too annoying to bear.
B.The author can restore his sight to normal.
C.The author starts to enjoy his writing again.
D.It is likely that the technology will improve.
B 5. A 6. A 7. C
第 4 题 B 定位至题干所指向的段落,根据上下文可知, “I became unable to read or write for any considerable
第 5 题 A 定位至第三段第四行处,“The greatest barrier seemed to be the automated voice.”

We often hear that 60 is the new 50. Just check out images of your grandparents or great-grandparents and notice
their stooped (驼背的) bodies, their wrinkled faces when they were barely pushing 60. What a contrast with energetic,
gym-going sexagenarians (60几岁的人) of today!
A research, overseen by gerontologist Taina Rantanen, compared adults born in 1910 and 1914 with those born
roughly 30 years later. Both birth groups were examined in person at age 60 and again at 70 with the same set of six
physical tests and five measures of cognition.
According to the research, the later-born group could walk faster, had a stronger hand grasp and could use more
force with their lower legs. On cognitive tests, the later-born group had better verbal fluency, and scored higher on a test
matching numbers to symbols. But not everything changed across the generations: measures of lung function were
surprisingly not changing, and there was no improvement in the short-term-memory task of recalling a series of digits.
There are many reasons why people are aging better, including improved medical care and a drop in smoking, but
the key factor shown in the study of physical function was that the later-born adults were more physically active and had
bigger bodies, which suggests better nutrition. For brain function, the key seems to be more years of education.
Education is a powerful influence on aging and health, says Luigi Ferrucci, scientific director of the U.S. National
Institute on Aging: “With more education, you are probably going to have a larger income, which means you are more
likely to go to the doctor, and have good nutrition.” He also points out that the average life span is seven years shorter in
a poor state such as Mississippi than in a wealthier one such as California. “Here we still have lots of people who cannot
take the drugs they need because they cannot pay for them,” he says. In short, 60 may be the new 50 for many of us but
not for all.
8. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By imagining a scene. B. By making a comparison.
C. By raising a question. D. By presenting an image.
9. Which of the following is true about the research?
A. Everything didn’t change across the generations.
B. The later-born group could hardly grasp things more tightly.
C. The later-born group did worse in matching numbers to symbols.
D. There was a little improvement in short-term memory in both groups.
10. According to the research, what contributes most to physically aging better?
A. Improved medical care. B. Education.
C. Better nutrition. D. Energetic images.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Many reasons contribute to people’s better physical function.
B. Today’s energetic sexagenarians have much better images.
C. Education is the key to people’s aging better.
D. People today are aging better in many ways.

Last week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan declared a war on paper textbooks. “Over the next few years," he said
in a speech at the National Press Club, “textbooks should be abandoned." In their place would come a variety of digital-
learning technologies, like e-readers and multi-media websites.
Such technologies certainly have their place. But Secretary Duncan is threatening to light a fire to a tried-and-true
technology that has been the foundation for one of the great educational systems on the planet. And while e-readers and
multi-media may seem appealing, the idea of replacing an effective learning platform with a widely hyped (炒作) but
still unproven one is extremely dangerous,
An expert on reading, Maryanne Wolf, has recently begun studying the effects of digital reading on learning, and s0
far the results are mixed. She worries that Internet reading, in particular, could be such a source of distractions for the
student that they may cancel out most other potential benefits of a web-linked, e-leaning environment, and while it's true
that the high-tech industry has sponsored considerable amounts of research on the potential benefits of Web-based
learning, not enough time has passed for longitudinal (纵向的) studies to demonstrate the full effects.
In addition, digital-reading advocates claim that lightweight e-books benefit students' backs and save schools money.
But the rolling backpack seems to have solved the weight problem, and the astonishing costs to equip every student with
an e reader, provide technical support and pay for regular software updates promise to make the e-textbook a very pricey
choice.
As both a teacher who uses paper textbooks and a student of urban history, I can't help but wonder what parallels
exist between my own field and this sudden, wholesale abandonment of the technology of paper.
12. What does the underlined part “a tried-and-true technology" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Foundation B. Paper C. E-books D. Platform
13. What is the drawback of textbooks according to the passage?
A. Its price. B. Its efficiency. C. Its content. D. Its weight.
14. What worries Maryanne Wolf is that__________
A. E-readers and multimedia websites are learning methods that are proved effective.
B. the results of digital reading effects are understandable
C. digital reading can't provide potential benefits for users
D. students may not focus on leaning by digital reading
15. What is the author's attitude towards digital-learning?
A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Positive. D. Disapproving.

40. 答案 existing/existent 命题透析考查非谓语动词/词性转换。

Sustainable Development
Hello, everyone!
I’m privileged to have the chance to speak on behalf of my class here. As people are becoming more aware of the
need to protect the environment, sustainable development has become an irreversible trend.
While nearly everything we do in modern lives requires use of the Earth’s natural resources, they do have many
disadvantages. They are non-renewable and burning fuels can be harmful to the environment. That’s why people are
pushing for the use of alternative energy sources.
Alternative energy sources, including solar energy, wind energy and hydroelectricity, can be used without running
out. On top of this, they are environment-friendly and beneficial to the lives of our children and grandchildren.
That’s all. Thank you.

The story of my new family member
We found a lonely dog a few weeks ago, walking along the road in the countryside. All of a sudden, he was jumping
on cars, and at the same time we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere in the neighboring areas. As a
consequence we passed him by without hesitation. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place,
again and again, making an attempt to get people to stop for him. When he caught sight of us approaching, he lay down
in the middle of the road, so we failed to get around him.
My father braked hard, pulled up and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out whether anyone around
from whom he had been separated. After getting off the car, we checked the dog carefully. It didn’t appear so. Then we
took a good look at the poor but cute dog. He gazed at us eagerly with gloomy eyes. We circled around him in a total
silence. We had an overwhelming desire to find out what was wrong with him. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any clues.
He had no collar and he was really too thin. Eventually we decided that he had been abandoned. We showed great
sympathy for the poor dog. How helpless he was on such an occasion! He was homeless and he had no one to rely on.
On seeing the scene, we couldn’t help begging my parents to raise him. My mother agreed excitedly, “I love this
lovely dog. How poor he is! It is high time that we should bring him home.” She stared at the dog with tears welling up
in her eyes. We knew my mother was willing to adopt the dog because she was so sweet and she loved dogs very much.
My father thought it was dangerous to raise a dog due to the fact that we were too young.

Paragraph 1:
My father said firmly, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.”
The dog happily joined us with no fight at all, the only thing we were in danger of was getting licked. He kept sticking
his head between the two front seats and thanked us for picking him up. The dog had clearly been on the road for some
time, he was really too thin. So we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks striving to look after him with the
hope that he would get stronger. Unfortunately, all our efforts were in vain. He was still very thin.
Paragraph 2:
We took him to the vet, who said the dog appeared to be in good health. The vet guessed the dog was about two years
old. He gave the dog all the required shots and sent us on our way. “Amazing! The dog is healthy.” My mother said in an
excited voice. So thrilled were we that we headed home immediately. We did love our new family member. The dog was
a sweet companion to our family, who was a quick learner and knew how to respond to different instructions. We learned
a lesson from the experience that kindness and sympathy made a big difference to our life.
