A Best Science Fiction The Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson This classic trilogy from william Gibson consists of Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. The book that started the entire concept of Cyberpunk, the Hugo Award-, Nebula Award-and Philip K. Dick Award-winning Neuromancer remains one of the best sci-fi books ever written and the entire trilogy is worth a read, even if it’s the original that gets all the praise. Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons This series by Dan Simmons consists of Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, End ymion and The Rise of Endymion. Truly one of the great works in science fiction history, the Hugo Award-winning Hyperion Cantos is an absolutely excellent story of extreme terror, character-building and wild-world-building that is almost without equal in the type. How we haven’t gotten a proper onscreen adaptation of this series yet, I have no idea, but Perhaps it’s best left in its original, amazing book form. Ender’s Game Quartet by Orson Scott Card Ender’s Game is often read in schools, but it has incredibly mature themes like isolation, loneliness, competition and fear- many of which are more relevant now than when Orson Scott Card first began the series in 1985. If you love Ender’s Game, it’s worth reading the whole series to follow the sci-fi adventures of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin: Ender’s Game, Ender in Exile, Xenocide and Children of the Mind. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson This is the only stand-alone book on this list, as the rest are all in a series, so if you don’t feel like investing in 300, 000 pages of content, Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash is for you. This book is the heir ( 继 承 人 ) to Neuromancer’s 试卷第 2 页 共 18 页 Cyberpunk throne and an absolutely excellent read from Stephenson. The author uses virtual reality as his setting, and the main character is a pizza deliveryman in one world and a warrior prince in another. 1. Which book won the most awards? A. Neuromancer. B. Hyperion. C. Ender’s Game. D. Snow Crash. 2. What do we know about Ender’s Game Quarte? A. It consists of three books. B. It is popular among students. C. It has been adapted into a film. D. It focuses on children’s problems. 3. What is special about Snow Crash? A. It’s the longest story. B. It’s about the solar system. C. It’s not a series. D. It’s not a real story. A 2. B 3. The Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson 部分“the Hugo Award-, Nebula Award-and Philip K. Dick Award-winning Neuromancer”可知 Neuromancer 获得过至 少三项大奖,比本文提到的其他小说都多。故选 A。 根据 Ender’s Game Quartet by Orson Scott Card 部分“Ender’s Game is often read in schools”( Ender’s Game 这本书在学校经常被阅读)可知 Ender’s Game Quarte 在学生中很受欢迎。 根据 Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson 部分 “This is the only stand-alone book on this list, as the rest are all in a series”(Snow Crash 是这些作品中唯一一本 独立的书,其余的都是一个系列)可知 Snow Crash 的特别之处在于它不是一个系列。故选 C。 B 试卷第 3 页 共 18 页 “Let’s go outside and water the plants urged Fionamy energetic 4-year-old granddaughter, during recent visit from Maryland to my New Jersey home. Fiona and filled our watering cans. Out we went and I walked directly to the newly-planted begonias(秋海棠).“No, Granny, what about the grass and that tree?” Fiona insisted, pointing to the sycamore tree (悬铃木) that decorated a patch of earth between the sidewalk and the street, typically cared for by the town. Through Fiona’s eyes, the begonias the grass and the tree were all equal in nature’s esteem, all worthy of attention and care. At first, I didn’t want to deny my red begonias preferential treatment. I thought that the rain or the town would tend to the grass and the tree. Even so, I turned and joined in Fiona's universal watering party. Thanks to Fiona, I saw how the grass and the sycamore tree could assume their rightful place, equal to the begonias. They, as nature would have it, were all consumed by neighborhood deer several days after Fiona returned to Maryland. I wondered if I sincerely accept all of nature and all people with an open mind and heart. My time with Fiona inspired me to doubt myself since I couldn't even apply my equalitarian beliefs to a tree, grass and flowers. I paused and reflected on unspoken prejudice, the tendency for stereotyped(模式化的) thoughts to pass automatically through our minds. It makes people overgeneralize, sometimes leading to unfairness even when people feel they are being fair. Studies on unspoken prejudice show that sorting people, nature and objects into categories is a natural phenomenon. However, too often, dehumanizing prejudices are swept along by prejudices rooted early in life. Rarely do we question these opinions. Instead, we may assume, quite wrongly, that some people are less worthy, less valuable or, worse, hateful and dangerous. 4. What did Fiona want the author to do when they were out? A. Clean a patch of earth for the town. B. Tell her more about the sycamore tree. C. Help make the sidewalk and the street more attractive. D. Water the begonias, the grass and the sycamore tree. 5. How did the author feel about Fiona's suggestion at first? A. Curious. B. Uncertain. C. Uninterested. D. Supportive. 6. What made the author take a fresh look at the grass, the tree and the begonias? A. They were all eaten by deer. B. They were found in Maryland by Fiona. 试卷第 4 页 共 18 页 C. They were all close to the neighborhood. D. They received the same attention and care. 7. What can we infer about unspoken prejudice from the last paragraph? A. It is what fools use for reason. B. It often leads to unfairness. C. It is the original form of serious prejudice. D. It pushes people to think about what goes wrong. 【答案】4-7. DCAB 【语篇解读】本文是夹叙夹议文。一次与孙女共同浇灌植物的经历引发了“我”对偏见的思考。 4. D 细节理解题。根据第二段中的 I walked directly to the newly-planted begonias. “No, Granny, what about the grass and that tree?”可知, Fiona 希望“我”能对秋海棠、草坪以及悬铃木一视同仁,给它们都浇点水。 5. C 推理判断题。根据第三段中的 At first, I didn’t want to .. tend to the grass and the tree 可推知,作者刚升始对 Fiona 的提议并不感兴趣。 6. A 细节理解题。根据第四段中的 Thanks to Fiona, I saw how ...after Fiona returned to Maryland 可知,几天后, 作 者发现这三种植物都会被街区的鹿吞食,这时作者才意识到这三种植物在自然界中的地位是平等的。 7. B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的 However, too often ..worse, hateful and dangerous 可推知, 无言的偏见常常会 导致不公平。 C For many white-collar workers around the world, the recent pandemic has meant having to work from home. Their usual office location has been out of bounds . This means different working practices, which have advantages and disadvantages for employees. But the big question is, “Will they ever see their offices again?” Home working has made people realize what tasks they can perform at home, rather than enduring a commute to the office to do the same thing. It has given them more time with the family; they’ve been sleeping better and have saved money by not travelling or buying lunches on the go . And recent research suggests the majority of people working from home are just as productive. For some people, this could be a permanent arrangement. In the UK, fifty of the biggest employers questioned by BBC, have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future. Of course, one main reason is that firms couldn’t see a way of accommodating large numbers of staff while social distancing regulations were still in place. But BBC also heard from some smaller businesses who are deciding to abandon their offices altogether. Other 试卷第 5 页 共 18 页 bigger companies are also looking at shutting offices to save money as many jobs can be performed remotely. Peter Cheese, head of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, told BBC: “We’re at a moment of real change in the world of work, driven by big existential crises. ” But this isn’t great news for everyone. Some employees can feel isolated at home, and there’s less opportunity to network or learn from other people, especially if they’re a new recruit . Also, city centers may suffer most from a change in working habits. Shops and cafes rely on the footfall of office workers, and without them, they face closure. The future is still uncertain, which is why tt may be too early to say where our desks will be permanently located. But the office of the future may be your home. 8. What does the underlined phrase “a commute to the office” in paragraph 2 mean? A. The journey to and back from the office. B. The distance between the office partners. C. A communication from the office. D. A call at the office. 9. According to the text, which is NOT the benefit of working from home? A. More time to accompany the family. B. Less money on lunches on the go . C. A better sleep. D. Higher efficiency. 10. What can we infer from paragraph 3? A. Half employers will tire their staff. B. Large numbers of staff will leave office. C. Some employees won’t see their offices again. D. Firms couldn’t deal with social distancing regulations. 11. What could be the best title for this text? A. Does Working From Home Benefit a Lot? B. Will Offices Disappear in the Future? C. The Usual Office Location Has Been out of Bounds D. Different Working Practices Have Advantages and Disadvantages 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B 试卷第 6 页 共 18 页 【解析】本篇议论文。在各国经历新冠肺炎疫情期间,有许多人都居家办公。雇主和雇员们都意识到,也许未 来人们不再需要办公室。本文讨论办公室的终结是否会来到,及这为什么对于人们来说是几家欢喜几家愁。 【8 题详解】 短语猜测题。根据下文“It has given them more time with the family; they’ve been sleeping better and have saved money by not travelling or buying lunches on the go .”(这让他们有更多的时间和家人在一起;他们睡得更好了, 而且不用出门旅行或在路上买午餐来省钱。)可推断,在家工作使人们意识到他们可以在家里完成任务而不必 忍受往返办公室的通勤就能做同样的事情。故 a commute to the office 是指“往返于办公室的旅程”。故选 A。 【9 题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段倒第二句“It has given them more time with the family; they’ve been sleeping better and have saved money by not travelling or buying lunches on the go .”(这让他们有更多的时间和家人在一起;他们睡得 更好了,而且不用出门旅行或在路上买午餐来省钱。)可知,选项 A、B、C 都是在家工作的好处。根据第二段 最后一句“And recent research suggests the majority of people working from home are just as productive.”(最近的研 究表明,大多数在家工作的人也同样高效。)可知,文章是指在家工作和在办公室工作一样高效,而不是更加 高效。故选 D。 【10 题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“For some people, this could be a permanent arrangement. ”(对一些人来说,这可 能是一种永久的安排。)可知,this 是指上文提到的“working from home”,结合下文“In the UK, fifty of the biggest employers questioned by BBC, have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future. ”(在英国,英国广播公司调查的 50 家最大的雇主表示,他们近期没有计划让所有员工全职回到办公室 工作。)以及“But BBC also heard from some smaller businesses who are deciding to abandon their offices altogether. Other bigger companies are also looking at shutting offices to save money as many jobs can be performed remotely.(但 BBC 也听到一些较小的企业决定完全放弃他们的办公室。其他更大的公司也在考虑关闭办公室,以节省资金, 因为许多工作都可以远程完成。) ”可推断,有些员工再也见不到自己的办公室了。故选 C。 【11 题详解】 主旨大意题。第一段最后一句 But the big question is, “Will they ever see their offices again?”(但最大的问题是, “他们还能再见到自己的办公室吗?”)提出了文章的论点“员工是否还会回办公室办公”,下文进行了讨论,在最 后 一 段 最 后 两 句 “The future is still uncertain, which is why it may be too early to say where our desks will be permanently located. But the office of the future may be your home.”(未来仍不确定,这就是为什么现在说我们的 办公桌将永久放在哪里可能还为时过早。未来的办公室可能是你的家。),可推断,作者认为办公室是否会消 失尚不能定论。所以选项 B(办公室会在未来消失吗?)是最好的标题。故选 B。 D 试卷第 7 页 共 18 页 Faster, cheaper, better-technology is one field many people rely upon to offer a vision of a brighter future. But as the 2020s dawn, optimism is in short supply. The new technologies that dominated the past decade seem to be making things worse. Social media were supposed to bring people together, but they are better known for leaking privacy. E- commerce, ride-hailing ( 网约车) and the gig economy (零工经 济) may be convenient, but they are charged with underpaying workers, worsening inequality and blocking the streets with vehicles. Today's pessimistic mood is centered on smart phones and social media, which took off a decade ago. Yet concerns that particular technologies might be doing more harm than good have arisen before. The 1920s witnessed a criticism against cars, which had earlier been seen as an answer to the problems caused by horse-drawn vehicles which filled the streets with noise and animal waste and caused accidents. And industrialization was criticized in the 19th century by Romantics who worried about the replacement of skilled workers, the robbing of the countryside and the suffering of factory hands. However, that pessimism can be overdone. Too often people focus on the drawbacks of a new technology while taking its benefits for granted. Worries about screen time should be weighed against the much more substantial benefits of convenient communication and the instant access to information and entertainment that smartphones make possible. A further danger is that Luddite (反对技术进步者) efforts to avoid the short-term costs associated with a new technology will end up denying access to its long-term benefits-something Carl Benedikt Frey, an Oxford academic, calls a "technology trap". Fears that robots will steal people's jobs may discourage their use. Yet in the long run countries that wish to maintain their standard of living as their workforce ages and shrinks will need more robots, not fewer. Any powerful technology can be used for good or ill. It is the choices people make about it that shape the world. Perhaps the real source of anxiety is not technology itself, but growing doubts about the ability of societies to hold this debate, and come up with good answers. So as the decade turns, put aside the pessimism for a moment. To be alive in the tech-obsessed 2020s is to be among the luckiest people who have ever lived. 12. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 1? A. The seriousness of social inequality. B. The rapid development of technology. C. Problems brought by personal privacy leaks. D. Worries about the influence of new technologies. 13. Which word can best describe Romantics' concern over industrialization? A. Negative. B. Uncertain. C. Sympathetic. D. Enthusiastic. 14. What might be a result of a "technology trap"? A. A lack of good jobs in the job market. B. An increase in the number of Luddites. C. A decrease in the number of skilled workers. 试卷第 8 页 共 18 页 D. An interruption to the advancement of a new technology. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Pessimism vs Progress B. Technology vs Civilization C. 2020s: The Age of Technology D. Robots: Our Future Caretakers 【答案】12-15 DADA 【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文。作者从近些年火热起来的电子商务,网约车,零点经济等入手,介绍了科技给 人们带来巨大便利的同时也使很多人感到担忧,从而提出人们如何选择和使用科技才是使社会进步的关键。 12. D 推理判断题。根据第一段后三句“Social media were supposed to bring people together, but they are better known for leaking privacy. E-commerce, ride-hailing (网约车) and the gig economy (零工经济) may be convenient, but they are charged with underpaying workers, worsening inequality and blocking the streets with vehicles.”(社交媒体本 应将人们团结在一起, 但它们更出名的是泄露隐私。电子商务、网约车和零工经济或许很方便, 但它们都被指控 给工人支付了较低的工资, 加剧了不平等, 还用车辆堵塞了街道。)可知,第一段提到了新媒体泄露隐私信息, 网约车阻塞街道,电子商务缺乏公平,工人报酬低等问题,从而对新技术所产生的影响表示担忧。故选 D。 13. 观点态度题。根据第二段最后一句“And industrialization was criticized in the 19th century by Romantics who worried about the replacement of skilled workers, the robbing of the countryside and the suffering of factory hands.” (在 19 世纪, 浪漫主义者批评工业化, 他们担心技术工人的替代, 农村的掠夺和工厂工人的痛苦。)可知浪漫主 义者对工业化的态度是消极的。故选 A。 14. 推理判断题。根据第三段“A further danger is that Luddite (反对技术进步者) efforts to avoid the short-term costs associated with a new technology will end up denying access to its long-term benefits-something Carl Benedikt Frey, an Oxford academic, calls a “technology trap”. Fears that robots will steal people’s jobs may discourage their use. Yet in the long run countries that wish to maintain their standard of living as their workforce ages and shrinks will need more robots, not fewer.”(更严重的危险是,路德派试图避免与新技术相关的短期成本,最终会阻碍其长期利益的获 得——牛津大学学者卡尔•贝内迪克特•弗雷称之为“技术陷阱”。 根据最后一段“Any powerful technology can be used for good or ill. It is the choices people make about it that shape the world. ”(任何强大的技术都可能被用于好的地方或坏的地方。人们做出的选择塑造了这个 世界。)可知,作者从近些年火热起来的电子商务, 网约车, 零点经济等入手, 介绍了科技给人们带来巨大便利的 同时也使很多人感到担忧,从而提出人们如何选择和使用科技才是使社会进步的关键。故选 A。 试卷第 9 页 共 18 页 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 You may think that learning how to draw can be very difficult, but with several tips, you can do it easily.
