综合能力测试题(七) 听说训练 39 PARTA: Reading Aloud 模仿朗读(满分 20 分) In this part, you are required to watch a video clip and read after the speaker in the video. The lands of the Middle East are so hot and dry that much of their surface is almost lifeless. But here in the Red Sea, coral reefs flourish wonderfully. The waters offshore are almost as rich in life as a rain forest And some animals come to the reefs simply for rest and relaxation. The family of bottlenose dolphins are resting on the reef after a night’s feeding offshore. Whilst the adults and their babies sleep, the adolescents set off to explore. And they appear to make up games. You might call this one, “Catch the coral.” PART B: Role Play 角色扮演(满分 16 分) In this part, you are required to act as a role and complete three communicative tasks: listen to a speaker, ask the speaker three questions and then answer five questions. 角色:你是视频中的男子 Tom。 任务:(1)与视频中的女子 Mary 谈论当遇到事情的时候应该如何处理的问题; (2)根据对话内容回答问题。 1.Now please ask the speaker three questions. 问题 1:现在请准备提出第一个问题。(中文提示:你通常怎样与你的朋友分享事情?) If the high temperatures are sustained, coral, bleached in this way, is likely to die. In recent years, it’s thought that half the world’s coral reefs have been affected by bleaching, including, since 2016, around two thirds of the shallow water corals on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. These once crowded submarine cities are reduced to bleak ruins, and many of their inhabitants left homeless. Some scientists predict that by the end of the century, coral reef cities, as we know them, could be a thing of the past. Is there any future for these most precious of ocean treasures? Here are some of the best places across the UK for your whole family to enjoy the quality time together in nature. Drove Orchards (果园), Thornham, Norfolk Drove shines a bit brighter each autumn, when it starts delivering fruit. Many of the fresh apples and pears there are ready-picked as well as PYO (short for pick-your-own): Also juice made from the orchards’ special varieties of apples is strongly recommended. Opening time: 10 am〜4 pm daily until the end of October (booking not necessary but checking what’s fruiting before visiting at droveorchards.com) Blooming Green, Linton, Kent Blooming Green is a “no-dig” flower business, selling flowers directly to customers and opening for PYO activities from summer to the end of October. In November and December there are wreath-making (花环制作) workshops, where participants pick their favorite flowers. Opening time: 10 am 〜 4 pm on Saturdays only (with pre-booking of one-hour slots, bloominggreenflowers.co.uk) Towerbrook Farm, Banwell, Somerset Like many other forms, Towerbrook Farm offers pick-your-own and cut-your- own service. But it’s the first place that offers dig-your-ovvn Christmas trees, meaning you can take your tree back after the holiday and replant it there, which allows you to avoid sending your tree to the recycling centre. Opening time: 8 am 〜 4 pm daily between 20 November and 30 December (pre-booking not necessary) Shute Fruit, Bishopsteignton, South Devon As well as selling preserves made from kinds of berries ( 浆 果 ), Shute Fruit also manages an extensive pick-your-won operation. There you can pick your own sloe berries. If you are a fan of sloe gin, a kind of alcoholic drink, whose alcohol content is between 15 and 30 percent, ask the farm for recipes to make your own sloe gin at home. Opening time: 11 am 〜 5 pm daily except rainy days and Mondays, until the end of October (booking not necessary, shutefruit.co.uk) 1. What is worth a try in Drove Orchards? A. Planting an apple tree. B. Working as a fruit delivery man C. Drinking freshly squeezed apple juice. D. Identifying different varieties of apples. 2. Where will you most probably visit if you want to buy some rose? A. Thornham B. Linton C. Banwell. D. Bishopstcignton. 3. What is the highlight of Towerbrook Farm? A. Teaching people how to pick Christmas trees. B. Encouraging cooperation with recycling centres. C. Allowing the replanting of used Christmas trees. D. Offering a wide range of choices for shipping your trees. B Are there actually, trees on the moon? Not really. The story of moon trees started in 1971, when Apollo 14 launched a mission to the moon The mission pilot, was Stuart Roosa, a former U.S. Forest Service smoke jumper When he was selected for the job, he was contacted by Ed Cliff, the chief of the Forest Service, who asked if Roosa could help scientists as they were curious about whether tree seeds, after their journey into the space, would grow as normal. Roosa agreed and he selected five species of tree seeds. The seeds were then sorted and divided into two same sets. One was packed into his personal travel kit and then taken to the moon. The other was left on Earth as a control sample. On Jan. 31, 1971, Roosa, along with other astronauts, took off on the third mission to the moon. Unfortunately, after returning to Earth, the kit burst open due to an accident of decontamination (消 毒). The crew thought the seeds were no longer useful. After being shipped to the Forest Service labs, nearly all the seeds began to grow. After a few years, the Forest Service had over 420 seedlings (幼 苗) which looked exactly the same as their Earth-bound equivalents (相等的东西). In 1975 and 1976, most of the young trees were given away to be planted in various states for the country’s 200th celebration. Not all states received moon trees because the trees were southern and western species from warm states and wouldn’t have grown in other climates. Other young moon trees found homes in the U.S. such as at the White House, the Kennedy Space Station in Florida, Goddard Space in Flight Center in Maryland, Washington Square in Pennsylvania, and various universities. Some trees were even given away as gifts to other countries. The number of moon trees has increased over the years, as cuttings are taken from moon trees and replanted. These second-generation moon trees are called half-moon trees. Roosa passed away in 1994, but a moon tree stands over his grave in Virginia. 4. What was Roosa expected to do? A. Take some tree seeds to the moon. B. Recommend Ed Cliff to the mission pilot. C. Contact the chief commander for permission. D. Return to the Forest Service after his mission. 5. What happened to the seeds after the accident? A. They were kept in the kit. B. They were no longer useful. C. They survived and grew well. D. They were infected with some diseases. 6. Which state was less likely to receive a young moon tree? A. Florida. B. Pennsylvania. C. Maryland. D. Alaska. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. The mystery-of moon trees. B. Roosa’s contributions to space exploration. C. The distribution of moon trees in the world. D. The difference between moon trees and normal ones. C Recently, researchers compared teachers and parents’ evaluation of children who started kindergarten in 1998 — six years before Facebook was launched — with that of those who began school in 2010, when the first iPad was released. The idea for the study came several years ago when Downey, lead author of the study, had an argument at a pizza restaurant with his son, Nick, about whether social skills had declined among the new generation of youth. “Nick asked me how I knew that. And that was when I realized there really wasn’t any solid evidence,” Downey said. So Downey, with his colleagues, decided to investigate. For their study, they used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS), which is run by the National Center for Educational Statistics. The ECLS follows children from kindergarten to fifth grade. The researchers compared data on the children who began kindergarten in 1998 (19,150 students) with that on those beginning kindergarten in 2010 (13,400 students). Results showed that children’s social skills did not decline between the 1998 and 2010 groups. And similar patterns remained as the children progressed to fifth grade. Even children within the two groups who had the heaviest exposure to screens showed similar development in social skills compared to those with little screen exposure. While Downey was initially surprised to see that time spent on screens didn’t affect social skills, he really shouldn’t have been. “There is a tendency for every generation at my age to start to have concerns about the younger generation. It is an old story,” he said. These worries often involve “moral panic” over new technology. Adults are concerned when technological change starts to undermine traditional relationships, particularly the parent-child relation-ship. New generations are learning that having good social relationships means being able to communicate successfully both face to face and online. “You have to know how to communicate by email, on Facebook and Twitter, as well as face to face. We just looked at face-to-face social skills in this study, but future studies should look at digital social skills as well,” Downey said. 8. Why did Downey carry out the study? A. To teach his son a lesson. B. To support his point of view. C. To improve kids’ social skills. D. To free kids from screens. 9. What’s the theme of Downey’s investigation? A. The progress of early childhood’s social skills. B. The measure to enhance children’s social skills. C. The impact of network on children’s social skills. D. The link between children’s social skills and their age. 10. What does the underlined word “undermine” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Damage. B. Enhance. C. Demonstrate. D. Emphasize. 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Young people are better at digital social skills. B. Downey realized the necessity of digital devices. C. Face-to-face communication may disappear one day. D. Researchers may readjust evaluation of social skills. D There are lots of nice stories about the healing of nature as humans suspend their activity. However, this slowdown is not all good news. New York City, for example, has suspended its organic recycling program. That means thousands of tons of garbage that would have been recycled last year will find their way to landfills instead this year. Like other New Yorkers, I recycled my kitchen waste and other organic materials. When they rot, they produce methane ( 甲 烷 ), which if let loose can be harmful to the atmosphere. But when captured in a controlled way, the methane can be put to use as alternative energy. Plus, there is a by-product — fertilizer, which can be sold on the market. Now those thousands of tons of trash (垃圾) will be trucked away to landfills in Ohio and other remote places. It’s definitely a step backward in our, fight against climate change. Government leaders may get some inspiration from New York City’s Freshkills Park. The park is a best-case scenario ( 方 案 ) for what can happen to mountains of garbage. It was originally the Fresh Kills Landfill which received garbage for more than half a century. In 2001, the dump was closed. The Freshkills Park, around three times the size of Central Park, will be opened in 2035. What is under the park is pretty complex, even if it just looks like a grassy hill. There are a few layers, each for different purposes. As for the methane, the park has hundreds of wells to capture the gas, which is enough to power 20,000 homes. Trees are tricky at the park because their roots can’t go that far down. As well, most grasslands only have shallow-rooted grasses so that the staff can easily get access to the wellheads. The project brings good news to the grasshopper sparrows. These birds are of conservation concern in New York State. Today, the grasshopper sparrows in New York State call this former landfill their home. So do foxes, deer and other animals. Although it will take over a decade before the park fully opens, it has worked well so far. Besides this project, it’s expected that similarly brilliant plans for the new trash will come out soon. 12. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that organic materials _________. A. can be replaced by alternatives B. can be hardly controlled or recycled C. are of economic value if handled properly D. are a big challenge for many communities , 13. What is the author’s attitude towards trucking New York City’s trash away? A. Indifferent. B. Supportive. C. Neutral. D. Negative. 14. What can we know about the Freshkills Park? A. It has many-wells for watering trees and grasses. B. It gives the former landfill a new look. C. It is close to residential districts. D. It is as large as Central Park. 15. What does the author mainly want to convey in Paragraph 6? A. New York is an ideal place for wildlife. B. The project will be finished as scheduled. C. New York has a large species of wild animals. D. The project contributes to wildlife conservation. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 I opened the big steel door to the school’s front office nervously. My hands were a bit sweaty and my throat felt dry. 16 No, not for me as a student, but rather, for me as a first-time reading tutor volunteering with Experience Corps program for a school year. The program helps the third graders improve their reading skills. This year alone, Experience Corps reported that we volunteers were in 10 schools in the Tempe Elementary School District, reaching over 320 children. 17 Each day, the students would come in with bright and excited eyes, 18 Experience Corps developed a research-based reading improvement program which consists of fun reading “games” that we’d play with each child. Therefore, the students didn’t even realize that they were actually learning and improving their reading — we were having too much fun! Throughout the year, as we read and advanced to higher level books, I got to know each student better. Their frankness as children was something I looked forward to. 19 For example, they would tell me, “Ms. R, I read my book to my dog, Sunny, and she really liked it, too.” 20 One little boy had tears welling up in his eyes. But like some kids of my age, I didn’t take driving seriously and I wasn’t very skilled at it. “Mom, can I drive home?” I asked Mom when she picked me up from my after-school house-cleaning job. She hesitated before replying, “Maybe you can have a try since you have got your driver’s license.” I jumped into the driver’s seat. Mom guided me while I was driving the car in Mrs. Carlson’s driveway. When we reached the countrysie road, I stopped. “Now, look both ways,” Mom instructed. “Turn your steering wheel (方向盘) to the left. Give the car some gas, but drive slowly and carefully. We’re not in any hurry.” I pulled onto the narrow two-lane road. We rolled along fine until a blue truck rushed behind us. I glanced at our car’s mirror, finding that the trucks driver drove very fast and seemed to be in a hurry. When I failed to speed up, he impatiently sounded his horn (喇叭). I felt a little scared and anxious, with my .fingers taking hold of the steering wheel. Mom pointed, “You’d better turn into the next driveway and let this guy pass.” Before I reached the place where I needed to turn, the guy sounded his horn again. In a panic, I drove too last without listening to Mom’s instruction. As a result, our car turned right and drove off the road. The car’s engine screamed like an angry cow. And it immediately flew through a wire fence and luckily stopped in the middle of a pasture (牧场), where several horses were eating grass. My hands dropped from the steering wheel. For a moment, my mom and I sat silently. I took several deep breaths, afraid to look at my mom. Finally, she asked, “Are you okay?” “Yeah, I’m all right,” I said and turned to face her. I thought that she would criticize me, but when our eyes met, we burst into laughter. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 Paragraph 1: We threw open the doors and climbed out of the car. Two horses nearby stopped eating grass and walked over to the wire fence to observe the strange happening. Their funny expressions brought us more laughter. “Are you ladies okay?” a man’s voice interrupted. We spotted the blue truck parked in the driveway and an older man walking towards us. Mom quickly calmed herself and replied,“Yeah.”And she added this was the first time that I had driven on the road. The man apologized for having sounded his horn. Paragraph 2: Then the truck driver checked our car over and didn’t see any damage. However, the tires had been stuck into the soft ground. Since the man was busy and our car wasn’t damaged, Mom let him drive off. Then we knocked on the door of the farm owner, but there was no answer. Mom wrote a note with our name and phone number on it, explaining that we’d be back to claim the car and repair the fence. It was an unforgettable driving experience for me. From then on, I began to take driving seriously and learned to drive carefully. 限时综合能力训练 七选五 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 (一) The philosophy of “do as I say” doesn’t work in corporate culture but what works is the philosophy of “do as I do”. Leaders are the ones who come out and lead rather than sit behind and give orders. While saying it is easy, implementing it practically takes a long time of practice. The following are some tips on how to be a better leader. Take responsibility. 1 Complaints and criticism only make your team members defensive, while taking responsibility shows that the leader has certain love towards the team, which will positively affect the team. Learn to listen. Employees feel valued and important when their bosses listen to them. 2 And it is their right. It makes them feel important, and it gives a sense of contribution to them. 3 Greet your employees every morning, ask them about their well-being, and give them best wishes on their birthdays. Although these are very tiny things, your employees will surely appreciate the little effort that you have taken to cheer their day. Put the team first. Leadership is not about yourself, but it is about your team. A leader would not be in that position without his team. Work collaboratively (协作地) with your team like a team member. 4 Walk the talk. You should be able to do what you say. 5 Suppose you are saying that you are going for cost-cutting, and if you purchase an expensive table for yourself at the workplace, it will demean (贬低) the importance of your words to your employees. A. Pay attention to details. B. Employees want to be heard. C. Maintain a work-life balance. D. Be their guide rather than their boss. E. It should not be against your actions. F. Listening is not hearing but comprehending. G. Blame giving is not a sign of good leadership. (二) In biology, evolution (进化) is a process by which species change over time. Evolution is a theory — an explanation about how the world works, backed by evidence. The theory of evolution states that groups of creatures change over time. 1 Since every individual within a group is different, some usually have special qualities to help them adapt to the change. 2 Over time, the group evolves as more and more individuals with those special qualities survive. Keep in mind that groups don’t evolve to become more “advanced” than their ancestors. Their ancestors did well enough to pass on their genes (基因), after all! But species are always changing, so are their environments. Sometimes the climate might change and their environment might have more or less food for them. 3 Those challenges make it harder or easier for some individuals in a group to survive. 4. For example, fossils (化石) show how apes came to walk upright over millions of years, leading to the evolution of humans. Standing on two legs is a great way to get around. It was beneficial to the species that tried it. That is why we’re standing here today. Scientists also use the word evolution in other situations. 5 The shape of mountains might evolve as time wears them down and rocks below push them up. A computer chip might evolve as new innovations help it work faster. A. A natural disaster might strike. B. Actually evolution is also taking place now. C. It also explains how changes happen in groups. D. Creatures adapt easily to changing environments. E. Thus they will be more likely to survive and reproduce. F. Scientists have some solid evidence that evolution occurs. G. It can refer to a series of changes in the non-living world. 语法填空 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。 (一) Since the time we were in primary school, we (1) ___________ (tell) it is important to have excellent reading comprehension. Thirty percent of our final grade would be based on an assignment that was going to take, at minimum, twenty hours to complete. The assignment? Community service? “We are all part of a community. Whether or not a community succeeds is largely dependent on how citizens treat each other. So go out into your communities — get involved, and do it in a way that you don’t get paid. I believe this assignment will change your life. It is only for twenty hours, but you might be surprised what can happen in those twenty hours,” the professor said. After doing some research, I found an after-school tutoring program for kids. I filled out my paperwork and a week later I got a phone call saying that I had been paired with a fourth-grade boy named Steven. He wore glasses and was a Harry Potter fan. He was a little on the quiet side for the first few weeks, but it was obvious that he was a very bright boy. We met twice a week, each for two hours, so it would took me five weeks to complete the necessary hours for my class. When I started, I only intended to complete the required hours for my assignment. But when the hours were done, I realized how small a sacrifice it had been for me to tutor Steven. I still had sufficient time to do my schoolwork and my part-time job, and even spend time with family and friends. And most importantly, I liked Steven. Most days, Steven finished his homework in half an hour if he had some. That meant we could do other things. We read the fourth Harry Potter book together and wondered what was going to happen in the final three and argued over whether or not Snape was a bad guy. One day, I finally asked him what was wrong. He said he didn’t want the school year to end because I wouldn’t tutor him when the school year was over. Hearing his words, I felt like crying. He had become so much more than just a kid I spent time with to fulfill an assignment. He was like a little brother. I promised I would never forget him. I knew the promise wouldn’t make him feel better, but all good things must come to an end. Paragraph 2: On the last day of the school year, I called Steven to say goodbye. Steven told me he prepared a present and that he wanted to say goodbye to me face to face. I went to his home. He had gotten me a teddy bear with a pink bow tied around its neck. I handed him paperback copies of the first two Harry Potter books. Then Steven gave me a school picture with a note saying, “You are my best friend this year. I will remember you always.” It was the most heartfelt note that I ever received. To my delight, I got high grades regarding that assignment through which I also gained the trust and friendship of Steven.
