This is a page turner with complex characters and situations that will make you think hard about friendship, good and evil, betrayal, etc. It is intense and a great book by many measures. On one level, The Kite Runner is the story of two boys in Afghanistan and Afghan immigrants in America. It is a story set in a culture that has become of increasing interest to Americans since the September 11, 2001 attacks. It also explores the history of the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. On this level, it provides a good way for people to learn more about Afghan history and culture in the context of the story. Looking at The Kite Runner as a story about culture, however, misses what the book is really about. This is a novel about humanity. This is a story about friendship, loyalty, cruelty, longing for acceptance, redemption (救赎), and survival. The core story could be set in any culture because it deals with issues that are universal. The Kite Runner looks at how the main character, Amir, deals with a secret in his past and how that secret shaped who he became. It tells of Amir's childhood friendship with Hassan, his relationship with his father and growing up in a privileged place in society. I was drawn in by Amir's voice. I sympathized with him, cheered for him and felt angry with him at different points. Similarly, I became attracted by Hassan and his father. The characters became real to me, and it was difficult for me to put the book down and leave their world. I highly recommend this book, especially for book clubs. For those of you who are not in a reading group, read it and then loan it to a friend. You are going to want to talk about it when you finish. 21. The underlined words “a page turner” probably mean that the book is_____ A. abstract B. difficult C. ridiculous D. exciting 22.The greatest charm of The Kite Runner lies in______ A. the beauty of language B. the history of the Taliban C. the culture of immigrants D. the reflection of humanity 23. According to the passage, which of the following is true? A. The story is set in the September 11, 2001 attacks in America. B. The author always feels sympathy for the main character, Amir. C. The story can provide inspiration for readers of various cultures. D. The secret helped Amir to grow up in a privileged place in society. 24. What type of writing is the passage? A. A review of a book. B. An introduction to a book. C. A summary of a book. D. An advertisement of a book. B Aristotle believed the face was a window onto a person's mind. Today, facial expressions are still commonly thought to be a universally valid way to judge other people's feelings. A smile suggests happiness. A frown indicates sadness. However, an analysis of hundreds of research papers has uncovered a surprising conclusion: there is no good scientific evidence to suggest that there are such things as recognisable facial expressions for basic emotions which are universal across cultures. Lisa Feldman Barrett, a psychologist at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and her colleagues found that, on average, adults in urban cultures scowled when they were angry 30% of the time. This meant that some 70% of the time they did not scowl when angry. A scowl, the researchers concluded, seemed valid for all six of the emotional categories: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise. All raise questions about the efforts of information-technology companies to develop artificial intelligence algorithms (计算程序) which can recognise facial expressions and work out a person's emotional state. Aleix Martinez, a computer engineer at Ohio State University, said that companies attempting to extract emotions from images of faces have failed to understand the importance of context. Dr Martinez cited an experiment in which participants were shown a close-up picture of a man's face, which was bright red with his mouth open in a scream. Based on this alone, most participants said the man was extremely angry. Then the view zoomed out to show a football player with his arms outstretched, celebrating a goal. His angry-looking face was, in fact, a show of pure joy. Given that people cannot guess each other's emotional states most of the time, Dr Martinez sees no reason computers would be able to. “There are companies right now claiming to be able to do that and apply this to places I find really scary and dangerous, for example, in hiring people,” he says." Some companies require you to submit a video CV, and then this is analysed by a machine-learning system. And depending on your facial expressions, they hire you or not, which I find really shocking and not only based on the wrong hypothesis (假设),but a dangerous hypothesis.” 25.The main purpose of the passage is to A. present the mistake associated with artificial intelligence B. report the problem caused by misreading facial expressions C. describe the relationship between facial expressions and emotions D. introduce a danger experienced by information-technology companies 26.Dr.Martinez cited the experiment in order to_ A. reveal the mystery of the picture B. emphasize the importance of context C. show the significance of facial expressions D. demonstrate the professionalism of his experiment 27.What is Dr Martinez's attitude towards hiring people depending on their facial expressions? A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Neutral. D. Favorable. C Tansel Ali used to curse (咒骂)his terrible memory. He struggled to remember phone numbers. But now he has won the Australian Memory Championships four times and has represented Australia at the World Memory Championships, where he was able to memorise 80 words in 15 minutes and 41 names and faces in five minutes. So how did Tansel's memory improve so much? The key,he says, is in encoding information into an image. Tansel also creates images when remembering numbers. That involves a lot of “pre-work”, he explains. “I've got images already pre-memorised from 0 to 99. So, for example, 17 is a dog and 71 is a cat, so if I get the number 1771, I'm going to picture a dog chasing a cat."And it works. If you want to strengthen your own recall skills, Tansel suggests reading something incredibly dry and boring, such as a “terms and conditions” page. While doing so, create a story in your mind. “If you can make a story out of what you're trying to remember, you can essentially memorise anything." Psychologist Sharon Draper says there are other ways to boost your memory, including doing brain challenges such as puzzles, crosswords and Sudoku at least once a day.“ Being physically active, avoiding smoking, reducing alcohol intake and aiming for a solid night's sleep can also help protect your memory from going through the sieve(筛网)”,Draper adds. And dietitian Kathryn Hawkins notes that sticking to a well-balanced diet - with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids-will promote brain health and thus memory. There's no denying that Tansel now has a great memory. But it's not the only thing to improve since he started training his brain: his confidence and self-esteem have skyrocketed, and his stress levels have fallen dramatically as a result. “The better you become at sharpening your memory", Tansel has learnt,“ the easier life becomes.” 28. Which of the following was adopted by Tansel to improve his memory? A. Eating a balanced diet. B. Doing brain challenges. C. Creating a story in his mind. D. Guaranteeing a good night's sleep. 29.Why does the author mention Tansel's case in the last paragraph? A. To share more techniques of living an easy life. B. To introduce more benefits of training our brain. C. To illustrate the importance of having a good memory. D. To show the relationship between confidence and self-esteem. 30.Which of the following might be the best title for the text? A. The Legend of Tansel. B. The Secret of Tansel. C. The Power of Memory. D. The Improvement of Memory. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Financial goals for the New Year usually have a place in most people's list. 31 Here are some ways you can make sure those financial goals are achieved. You have to actually set these goals in the first place. Try to find out what matters to you. Write down everything - practical and impractical. 32 You will also need to set a specific time limit you desire to reach these goals. 33 Once you start doing so, it'll shock you how the smallest expenses add up to huge amounts. After successfully keeping track of your spending for a month, categorize them into groups to properly understand which type of expenses eat into your income the most. You can then use the data to cut down unnecessary expenses. If you want to reach your financial goals, you'll definitely need to create a budget. 34 At the beginning of each week, you can create a budget for how much you should spend every day in that week. It is helpful to constantly believe that the amount you have on your weekly budget is the only amount you own. Creating barriers that make it difficult for you to access the rest of your money till the end of the week can also help. Spending less than you earn is one of the easiest ways to get you out of debt and save towards your future. One way is to always reach for the most affordable options you can find. When you go shopping, don't just reach for the first product you see. 35 Quality will still matter of course. Make sure to review your financial goals and progress regularly. This will help you evaluate mistakes and decide whether to adjust your goals or even create new ones. There's really no shame in slacking(懈怠) a few times. You only need to carefully address the areas you slacked in and determine to do better. A. Track your expenses. B. Save like your life depends on it. C. But only a few people actually accomplish them. D. Try to see if you can get a cheaper brand of that same product. E. Sort them into short term, long term goals, and level of importance. F. It is also easier these days with many shopping apps that you can use. G. Budgets are useful in helping you control the amount of money you spend. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 45 分) 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白 处的最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。 Looking back, I always laugh when I recall one of my most embarrassing but funniest memories. But this five-episode series is different from any other TV program 57 a similar theme. Post-00s58(film) over 10 years, during which it followed several kids from their infancy to adolescence. In other words, the show's characters and their stories are all real. “Coming-of-age” stories, as they're known, have 59 special appeal. They satisfy our 60 (curious) of looking at others 'life, and we become 61 (attach) to the characters as if we truly knew them. This realness can also be seen in Boyhood, a 2014 film 62(win) the Silver Bear award for best director. During a period of 12 years, the film followed the life of Mason Jr-63 (play) by US actor Ellar Coltrane-from when he was 6 to when he finished high school. One of Boyhood's attractions comes from its “ordinariness”。 Mason Jr isn't some child genius, rather a 64(fair)typical American boy who grows up in the Texas suburbs. 65 coming-of-age stories may look ordinary on the outside, they often allow us to look underneath the surface and see the power of life itself. 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分 40 分) 第一节 应用文写作(满分 15 分) 假如你是英华国际学校学生会主席李华,你在食堂发现有浪费粮食现象,打算向全校师生作 “FOOD FOR LIFE”的演讲,请你用英文写一篇演讲稿,内容包括: 1.演讲的主题; 2.演讲的原因; 3.你的倡议。 注意: 1.词数 80 左右; 2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。 Good morning, respected teachers and dear fellow students! Thank you for your listening! 第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分) 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 The watch was my grandfather's. He hung it by his bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numbers and the case was gold. My grandfather got it after his fifty years of faithful service with his firm. I often gazed at it longingly as I sat with my grandfather after school. The day I told him of my success in the examinations, he was pleased, “You'll be going to the new school next, Will. Remember you'll need plenty of patience. That's the right way." I nodded when handing him the watch. He gazed at it for some moments, and wound it. The next morning my mother told me he had died in his sleep and left me his watch. For safety, my mother was to put it away in trust until she considered me old enough to look after it. I protested (抗议) so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it in the kitchen where I could always see it. The summer soon ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily, and for a time I did little more than get on speaking terms with some boys. One of them was a rich fellow whose way of impressing us was to parade his possessions before us. Everything Crawley had was better than ours-until he brought the watch. “I have a better watch than that,” I announced, attempting to impress them. "Well, show it to us,” Crawley sneered (冷笑) in disbelief. Embarrassed, I promised to bring it to them that afternoon. Considering there was no way to persuade my mother to let me take the watch, I decided to wait for her to step outside and slip the watch into my pocket. So I did. After lunch, as I was too excited to wait for the return bus, I got my bike out of the shed. I rode fast, excitement coursing through me. Then suddenly a puppy ran out into my path. I pulled at my brakes so hard that the bike stopped to a sharp standstill (急停) and I fell over. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右; 2.至少使用 5 个短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1 I picked myself up and put a trembling hand into my pocket. While/Though/Although 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分 40 分) 第一节 应用文写作(满分15分) Good morning, respected teachers and dear fellow students! I feel so honored/privileged to deliver a speech themed at food for life. The past years have witnessed the severeness of food crisis worldwide. However, some of us haven’t attached great importance to the issue. Food waste is still a common sight, especially in the canteen. Facing the stern reality, I think it’s high time that we stopped it. Not only are we expected to raise the awareness of saving food, but also go into action immediately. Do remember, every bit of effort counts in the process of saving food for a better life. Thank you for your listening! 第二节 读后续写(满分25分) I picked myself up and put a trembling hand into my pocket. Then I brought out what was left of my grandfather's proudest possession. There was deep bulge in the watch, the glass shattered, and the Roman numbers looking crazily at one another. Putting it back, I rode slowly on to school, numb with misery. After what seemed forever, I finally turned up before the waiting boys. “My mother wouldn't let me bring it,” I lied. “His mother wouldn't let him,” Crawley jeered. “What a story!" The others took up his cries and left without a backward glance. “That’s not the right way. Patience, Will. Patience,” a voice echoed in my ears after the boys left. Though anger, embarrassment and sadness hung heavily in the air, the voice drew me to the awareness of the mistakes I had made when I attempted to impress the boys. I shouldn’t have tried to integrate in such a hasty way, nor should I have stolen the watch behind my mother. It was the first time that I had truly realized the meaning of the gift --- patience. I knew for sure that every time I lost patience in the future I would remember my grandfather’s words. 听力原文: Text 1 W: Don’t wear that white shirt. It’s dirty. Why don’t you wear the blue one with the long sleeves? M: I can’t wear that. There is a hole in the pocket. Pass me the black one. Text 2 M: Excuse me, I noticed the four empty seats beside you. Are any of them taken? W: These two are for my friends, but I’m not sure about the other two. No one has taken the three in the last row, though. Text 3 W: Stop scratching your arm, Sam. M: I can’t help it, Gina. It’s so hot outside, and the mosquitoes just love me this year! W: Well, I hope you close the windows tonight. Here put on this medicine. Text 4 M: Madam, do you know why I pulled you over? You were doing 75, and you weren’t supposed to go more than 50. Please show me your driver’s license. W: Officer, I hope you will let me off with just a warning. My boss is waiting for me... Text 5 W: It looks like some people are leaving the stadium. That might be a good idea if we want to get home earlier. Our team is losing, anyway. M: Only by one goal! I don’t care if it starts raining cats and dogs. We came here to watch the game! Text 6 W: Are you coming down for breakfast? They serve it until ten. (7) M: I was thinking about going for a swim first. I’ll only be about thirty minutes or so. If you want to go with the kids first, that’s fine. I’ll catch up with you later. W: Why don’t you just take a shower? It’s much faster, and you’ll get the same effect. M: I won’t be that long. I just want to see the waves crashing onto the beach front. W: Suit yourself. But even if you are back in thirty minutes, that only gives you five minutes for breakfast. And we leave around an hour after that. (7) Text 7 W: Hi, Bob. I heard about your accident but I didn’t know it would be this bad. M: Well, thanks for making me feel better. W: I can hardly recognize you. Tell me what happened. M: I just got back from Africa where I had a terrible accident during a motorcycle race. (8)I broke both my legs when my motor failed and was hit by another motorcycle. I was laid up in a hospital for three weeks. W: Three weeks? That’s a long time. What did you do while you were in the hospital? M: Well, if you can believe it, I read all about motorcycle racing. I love racing even when it pains me. (8) W: Ha-ha! But I’m afraid you don’t make it look very funny. You are lucky to be alive. M: That’s for sure. I’m lucky to be alive. W: How soon will you recover? Did the doctor tell you? M: They say I still need to stay in bed for two weeks or so. (9) W: You’ll probably put on some pounds in that much time! By the way, is there anything I can do for you? M: No, thank you. Thank you for the beautiful flowers. (10) It’s very kind of you to come and see me. W: My pleasure. I’ll be going then. Bye. M: Bye. Text 8 M: Yes, Teresa? Did you have a question? W: Oh, sorry, Mr. Johnson. I was just stretching. M: You raised you hand... W: Yes, I just had a little pain in my arm from all the careful notes I’ve taken. (11) I know you said to save all questions for the end of class. (12) Sorry for the confusion. M: No wonder you had to stretch! OK, class, I was just telling you about the emperor kneeling in the snow. We’ve seen this before in a famous painting. If you’ll just turn to page 54 in your textbooks... Yes, Teresa? Do you have another pain in your arm? W: No, Mr. Johnson. I was wondering if I could use the restroom. M: No need to ask, Teresa. Just go ahead next time. Please come back quickly. I don’t want to start the short film until you are back with us. (13) W: Thank you, Mr. Johnson. I’ll be back in less than two minutes. Text 9 W: I need to get a new pair of sunglasses. They need to be strong so they’ll last for a long time. I keep on breaking mine every time I go into the woods to go hiking. (14) M: At least you still have yours. I’ve lost so many pairs of sunglasses! Even when I tell myself not to, they still come up missing. W: When was the last time you lost a pair? M: Earlier today... W: What? That can’t be. I’ll be with you all day and I never saw you with any sunglasses on. M: Ha-ha, I’m just kidding. But seriously, I think the last time I lost my sunglasses was two weeks ago. (15) I wonder if they sell an insurance program that will replace a lost or broken pair. W: Why don’t you go up and ask them? Sunglasses Hut has a very good reputation. That’s where I get all my sunglasses. M: I am worried that they won’t to take me seriously. And all the pairs in there are super expensive. (16) W: Come on, let’s go see what they have! Maybe we’ll both leave with new sunglasses! M: Fine. But we need to find a restaurant first. I’m starving! (17) Text 10 Have you heard of the Golden Rule? (18) The great Chinese philosopher Confucius taught this principle. It is a very important and well-known idea. The rule says not to do anything to other people that you would not want them to do to you. (18) It is a very simple yet deep truth. Confucius possessed a lot of important wisdom like this. He encouraged many values like children respecting elders, people respecting their ancestors, and wives respecting husbands. He desired for these moral principles in people's lives and in the government of the country. (19) He believed that people should develop their own personal rules instead of simply memorizing rules of behavior to follow. He also had a thoughtful way of teaching. Instead of presenting his ideas through arguments and reasoning, he taught his rules through personal examples. He himself studied hard and sought truth, dreams and a perfect personality. In short, Confucius aimed to establish a world of great harmony. For over two thousand years, his teachings and beliefs still have a great effect on Chinese culture. Many other cultures around the world have also been influenced to this day by these important moral teachings. (20)
