Note taking
Note taking as an accommodation is available only to students who have
documented disabilities and are registered with Queen's University Accessibility
Service(QSAS). Note taking is approved for students with disabilityrelated functional
limitations that makes it difficult for them to access academic information presented in
class.
There is a wide range of reasons why students may require note taking as an
accommodation, including students with:
·hearing loss, who may have difficulties hearing the instructor while writing notes
at the same time
·vision loss, who may have difficulties seeing information presented on overhead
screens
· mental health conditions or attention related disabilities, who may have
difficulties attending to orallypresented information while taking notes
·learning disabilities, who may have difficulties recording notes when information
is presented orally
·physical disabilities, who may have motor or pain related difficulties
Accessibility advisers consider a student's description of their need for note taking
along with information contained in their disability documentation and the type of
course in approving note taking as a formal accommodation.
Online Note Taking Portal(门户网站)
QSAS is in charge of the exchange of notes taken by student volunteer note takers
and students registered with QSAS via our secure online note taking portal.
The pages in this section provide information for students with disabilities,
volunteer note takers and instructors on requesting note takers, signing up to be a
volunteer note taker and assisting QSAS with recruiting volunteer note takers.

Chris Mazdzer won a silver medal in a men's luge(无舵雪橇) singles event at 2018
Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, South Korea — equaling the best finish ever for any
member of the US Olympic luge team. In the luge, competitors lie flat, feet first, on a
small sled(雪橇). They can travel around an icy track at speeds up to 140 kilometres an
hour. The riders control the sled's speed by changing the position of their feet or by
moving their shoulders.
So why did the US luge team win a medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics? Most
credit must go to Chris Mazdzer himself. The American said his win was a product of
16 years of preparation and intense training. But another reason for Mazdzer's success
could have been the 3D printing technology, which his team used to make its
equipment.
The term 3D is short for three dimensional, meaning an object with length, width
and height. In 3D printing, 3D models are first created as files, or documents, on a
computer. The printer then uses a substance( 物 质 ) like plastic or metal to create
physical objects. The process involves making one layer of material at a time until the
objects reach full form.
The US luge team worked with an American company called Stratasys on the
designing and manufacturing process for the sleds. First, the company made a scan, or
image, of the body of every member of the luge team. Then, 3D printing technology
was used to create tools for making molds(模子) in the shape of Olympians on top of a
sled. The process of designing and tooling sled parts is highly complex and can take
several weeks. Officials from the US luge team say 3D printing can greatly simplify the
process, speeding up the production of parts.
Jon Owen, says the use of 3D printing has made the team more competitive. “It
helps the team continuously adjust designs and run the sleds on the track much faster
than traditional processes,” he said. He added that the technology also provides a way
to perfectly fit each rider to the sled, while cutting production time and costs.
( )24. What mainly contributed to Mazdzer's winning the medal?
A. His own great efforts.
B. His using a new technique.
C. The cooperation with his luge team.
D. The US Olympic luge team's encouragement.
( )25. To make the sleds for the team, what did the company have to do?
A. To create tools for making sled parts.
B. To take some photos of the members first.
C. To create molds according to the members' bodies.
D. To ask the Olympians to be present for several weeks.
( )26. From the last paragraph we learn that 3D printing most probably
________.
A. saves plenty of competitors' training time
B. helps competitors achieve their full potential
C. requires great skills of riders to fit the track
D. allows riders to change their sleds continuously
( )27. What is the text mainly about?
A. How 3D printing usually works.
B. How we take advantage of 3D printing.
C. How the US luge team performed this year.
D. How 3D printing helped Team US go for gold.
C
Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one's personal life or in the general
society. Progress indicates a person's ability to change the way he is living at the
moment. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these,
however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move
forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the
“ good old days ”, efficiency__comes__with__a__price. When communication
becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are
and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to
talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication
gadgets,__such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit
one another personally. A personal visit carries with it the additional feature of having to
be in the person's presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse
ourselves or turn the other person off.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the
success of industrialisation today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks
are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy
than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in
efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For
example, many handicrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this
means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and
efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the
handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analysing progress only from one
point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress
and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to
their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.
It is people's attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that
technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use
of it. Everything depends on people's attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on
those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept
progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.
( )28. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are
willing to ________.
A. live a better life B. look for better methods
C. accept technology and advance steadily D. change ways of living
( )29. What does the underlined word “gadgets” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Tools. B. Messages. C. Barriers. D. Skills.
( )30. How does the author explains “efficiency comes with a price”?
A. By describing a process. B. By making classification.
C. By following time order. D. By using examples.
( )31. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.
B. People review the past with great regret.
C. People's attitude decides the use of technology.
D. Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.
D
A T shirt that constantly monitors the heart's activity and detects abnormalities
could help protect people against stroke. The Tshirt, which can be washed up to 35
times before it needs replacing, has been developed to improve the detection of
dangerous heart conditions like atrial fibrillation(心房颤动), which causes an irregular
heart rhythm and raises the risk of stroke.
At least one million people in Britain are known to have this condition; however,
it's estimated that at least another 500 , 000 have it but haven't yet been diagnosed
because they have no obvious symptoms. Some will have symptoms such as chest pain,
dizziness and fatigue;but a large number of people have no idea they're ill until they
suffer a stroke.
Detecting atrial fibrillation involves carrying out an ECG(心电图). Conventional
ECGs are done in a hospital and involve highly trained teams of staff attaching up to 24
separate electrodes(电极) to different parts of the body to measure electrical signals.
But most patients experience abnormal rhythms only intermittently( 间 歇 地 ). This
means the chance of picking them up during a short hospital check is slim.
Doctors sometimes issue patients with a device called a Holter monitor to wear
under their clothes to try to pick up cardiac(心脏的) problems. This is an electronic box
which clips onto your waistband and is connected to a series of electrodes worn on the
upper part of your body. But the box itself is quite bulky, hard to hide beneath clothing
and involves a dozen or more wires being attached to the patient's chest.
The Cardioskin T shirt, which is made from cotton, could be a much more
convenient alternative and can be worn 24 hours a day—meaning it is more likely to
pick up any abnormal rhythms in the patient's heart. It has 15 tiny electrodes woven into
the material which are strategically placed around the chest area to track the electrical
signals from the heart as they travel across the main part of your body.
The electrodes are powered by a battery which can be removed easily when you
need to wash the Tshirt and feed results to a microchip which then sends them out
wirelessly to an app. This converts(转换) the data into an easytoread chart showing if
the heart rate is abnormal. The results are shared with the patient's doctor so they can
check the patient's heart without having to call them into the hospital.
Martin Cowie, a professor of cardiology at Imperial College London, said,
“Cardioskin could be an important development for cardiologists.”
( )32. How many British people are having dangerous heart conditions
according to the text?
A. Less than 0.5 million. B. Less than 1 million.
C. At least 1.5 million. D. At least 2 million.
( )33. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The difficulty in detecting atrial fibrillation.
B. The benefit of detecting atrial fibrillation.
C. The process of detecting atrial fibrillation.
D. The future of detecting atrial fibrillation.
( )34. Why did the author mention a Holter monitor in the text?
A. To show how convenient the Cardioskin Tshirt is.
B. To introduce a way to check the patient's heart.
C. To encourage people to care about their health.
D. To explain why doctors like using the device.
( )35. What can we learn about the Cardioskin Tshirt?
A. It has a battery that can be charged easily and quickly.
B. It can be worn a month without being washed.
C. It has electrodes placed all over the Tshirt.
D. It can speed up the process of diagnosis.
We automatically assume that as adults, we're wiser than when we were children.
However, actually we can learn a lot from our childhood self. For example, we can learn
to develop optimism about the future. Do you remember how excited you used to be
just before Christmas? __36__ Reintroduce that childlike wonder into our daily
experiences.
We can learn to dream big and imagine the impossible. How often have you heard
a child say something like “One day, I'm going to be an astronaut”? Our adult minds
immediately laugh at this idea and think about all the logical reasons as to why this
might never happen. __37__ We minimise our chances of attaining what we dream
about. It is okay to dream big just as our childhood self did.
__38__ Our childhood self looked at possibilities and believed we could achieve
them successfully. If we wanted to build a tree house, we'd go about thinking about how
to make it happen instead of focusing on all the reasons it might not happen. In this way
we can fill our life with possibilities rather than regrets.
We can learn to be playful and silly sometimes. __39__ Children spend a large
amount of time escaping from reality to mess about and have fun. Make time for your
childhood self to come out and play. Run around the garden, wear a silly hat or spend
time laughing. __40__
A. Don't imagine things could go wrong.
B. We can learn to hold a “can do” attitude.
C. That feeling of great joy is hard to beat.
D. Most children tend to think in a positive way.
E. All of these activities can make us feel happy and alive.
F. We employ selflimiting beliefs without even realising it.
G. All work and no play makes a person very dull and upset.

What makes the sea turn red and causes thousands of fish to die? As far back as
anyone could remember, the blame was placed on the “red tides”. In 1947, scientists
finally connected the red tides with a microscopic sea organism(有机体) __56__(call)
the dinoflagellate.
The dinoflagellate is so tiny __57__ 6,000 of these organisms may be contained in
__58__ single drop of water. It stands on the borderline between plant and animal in its
classification. It produces its own food, as plants do. But it moves __59__(free) and eats
other organisms, as animals do.
Dinoflagellates are normally only one of the many kinds of organisms found in
plankton. Plankton is the name given to all very small __60__(form) of sea life.
However, when the air and water __61__(be) calm and warm, dinoflagellates multiply
with __62__(amaze) speed. The surface of the water appears __63__(cover) with a red
carpet.
The dinoflagellates give off a poison. Many fish die. Their bodies are washed up
on the beach. Beaches are not fit __64__ any use. Fish that are not killed may become
__65__(poison) to animals or people who eat them. Commercial fishing comes to a
stop.
As dinoflagellates consume all the food and oxygen in an area, they die. After a
time, the sea returns to normal. But when conditions are right, the red tide comes
again.

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit's
east side to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted
a dog lying near the road next to his owner. We thought he'd been hit by a car. My friend,
Sandra Abrahamian, and I had assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought
there might be something we could do, so we quickly pulled over to help.
His owner, a woman told us the dog's name is Bosco, and she was walking him
over a mile in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one
would give him a ride to her new place. That's when she and a friend decided to walk
the entire way. He was going from a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said
Bosco was having trouble breathing along the way, but they thought he could make it.
But just a block away from their destination, Bosco fell down. We could tell he was
suffering from heatstroke(中 暑). She told us he had thrown up and could no longer
stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly; his drool(口水) was also thick. Bosco's owner
said she wanted to give him away because she didn't have time for him. She said he
would never be allowed into her new “home” because her children have allergies(过敏
症) and she worried he would dirty the carpet.
I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help
Bosco because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our
happiness, Rinaldi said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland
Veterinary Referral Services that a dog which needed critical care was being rushed in
and they must be ready to try their best to save him.

由第二段中的“At least one million people in Britain are...have no
obvious symptoms.”
由第三段中的“But most patients experience...is slim.”
由第四段中的“But the box itself is...to the patient's chest.”以及第
五段中的“The Cardioskin Tshirt, which is...24 hours a day”可知,这个盒子本身体积很大,很
Cardioskin T
Cardioskin

40. E 解析:根据空前“Run around the garden, wear a silly hat or spend time laughing.”

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Sandra drove while I stayed in the back seat trying to comfort Bosco. I thought we lost him a
couple of times when he was seemingly out of breath and his eyes seemed to close. By the time we
arrived, Bosco was wheeled into the animal care centre to receive emergency care. Bosco was put on
oxygen and was taken good care of by staff there and we waited anxiously for the dog to get out of
danger. Rinaldi said another dog in Detroit Dog Rescue had already been named Bosco, and she
wanted this new member to have a new name for his new life.
Paragraph 2:
So Bosco is now being called Roscoe, whose critical care and recovery were estimated to be
several thousand dollars. It would be difficult for Roscoe's new home to cover the costs as a non
profit organisation. Thankfully, many people who knew Roscoe's story on Detroit Dog Rescue's
Facebook page donated money for his care. With the help of supporters, Detroit Dog Rescue
managed to make it. Once Roscoe was in a stable state, Sandra and I returned to our original mission,
knowing we had already been given the chance to help one desperate soul.

W: Yes, of course.
M: Would you just sit on it while I fasten the locks?
W: No trouble.
Text 2
M: Which coat did you finally decide to buy?
W: Well, the green one cost $75, so I bought the brown one instead and saved $15.
Text 3
M: Our data base lists your mailing address as 114 Carson Ave. Is that correct?
W: No, I moved. I thought I let everyone know. But I must have forgotten about the mobile
phone bill. Let me correct that for you.
Text 4
W: I hear you're going home, are you?
M: Yes. My mother is very ill. I wanted to leave on Thursday, but I couldn't get a ticket. I
bought a ticket for Friday. I'll try to get back on Sunday night.
Text 5
M: I hope I could see Jack and his wife here.
W: They intended to come. But a moment ago Jack's mother called to say that he had to take his
daughter to hospital.
Text 6
M: Hi, Carina. Long time no see. Out partying every night, instead of studying, huh?
W: Well, not recently! Actually, I don't have any money to party these days.
M: Hey, I thought you had a good parttime job at the mall.
W: I do. I work about twenty hours a week, and the pay's not bad, nine dollars and fifty cents an
hour. And my parents send me five hundred dollars a month, too. But... I only manage to save about
ten dollars a month. It's a drag!
M: It sounds like you have a budget problem. Simple, either work more or spend less.
W: I'm definitely not going to work more. Ah, you work in a bank now, and I think you are the
best person to help me make a budget!
Text 7
M: We've decided we'd like to send you to London on a business trip this weekend. Don't you
think that it'd be a good idea for you to get out of the office for a couple of days?
W: Sure.

you. All you have to do is get on the train tonight at 7:00 pm.
W: The train? Will I be flying back then?
M: Oh, no. We've bought your return ticket for you.
W: OK. Where will I be staying?
M: We've booked you a room in the same hotel as your meetings. The hotel has an outdoor
swimming pool and it is just a stone's throw away from Hyde Park. It is in the heart of London.
W: That's very sensible.
Text 8
W: Excuse me! I work for CHAPS magazine, and we're doing a survey about men's selfimage.
Um, do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions?
M: Oh. No, no, go ahead. What do you want to know?
W: Well, I'd like to know what your clothes say about you.
M: Gosh, I suppose they say that I'm meeting a client this afternoon, and that means I've got to
make the right impression. So I have to wear a suit.
W: And would you say you care about your image?
M: Oh yes, I think I do. I like to look smart, even when I'm not working. Even when I wear
jeans and a Tshirt, I like them to be clean and neat, and I think this says that I care about myself. It
says that I've got good selfesteem.
Text 9
W: Hello?
M: Mom, it's Richard. How are you?
W: Oh, Richard. Is everything all right with you?
M: Yes, yes, fine. Mom, I was wondering... do you think you could lend me some money till the
end of the month?
W: Oh, Richard. Don't tell me you're buying another expensive computer. You really must learn
to plan your money properly.
M: Look, Mom, if you can just help me out this time, I promise I'll be more careful in future.
W: Well, we'll see about that. Listen, I'll do it this time. This is really the last time.
M: OK, thanks, Mom.
W: Now, could you tell me what you'll do with the money, dear?
M: Well, of course. We can talk about it when I get home this evening. I'm afraid I have to hang
off now. Bye, Mom.
W: Bye... and next time, could you phone just for a chat? Your dad and I always look forward to
your call. By the way, you can come here with Lily. She is a nice girl.
Text 10
Today, I'll tell you a funny story. A Hollywood director was filming an important film in the
desert when an old native American man came up to him and said, “Tomorrow rain.” The next day
it rained. A few days later, the director was talking to the cameraman about the next day's filming.
The native American went up to him and said, “Tomorrow storm.” He was right again, and he
saved the director thousands of dollars. The director was very impressed and gave the old man a job.
The old man continued to predict the weather correctly, but then he didn't come for three weeks. The
director was planning to film an important scene and he needed good weather. So he went to look for
the old man. When he found the old man and asked him what the weather would be like, the old man
shook his head and said, “Don't know. Radio broken.”
