Surprisingly, it doesn’t rain every day in a rainforest, but more still falls here than anywhere else on
Earth. On average, over two meters a year. A single tree can suck up hundreds of tons of water each
year. But the tree can’t use all this water, so much of it returns to the air as vapour, forming mist and
clouds. In the Amazon, the largest unbroken stretch of rainforest in the world, half of all the
rainwater that falls comes from clouds produced by the trees themselves. With so much rain, it's not
surprising that many of the world's largest rivers are found in rainforests.

An article caught my attention this week. It claims that few parents these days tend to hire
neighborhood teens to watch their kids. In fact, the article states that the average age of babysitters
(代人临时照看小孩的人) in the UK has risen from 14 to 34 over the past several decades.
I worked as a teenage babysitter for years. At that time, I took up those jobs as they were economic
to do so, but now I sec them as valuable experiences. The article reminded me of just how
significantly babysitting influenced my worldview and my approach to parenting. It made me think
that more teens should be involved in babysitting because it really does prepare them for life in a
way that few other things can.
Babysitting makes everyone’s life easier. I gained many practical skills adapting to children. I
discovered that the outdoor activities are the best way to wear out high-energy children and that
reading books aloud is an excellent way to pass the time and that music makes an instant party.
Babysitting reveals how other households operate. This is a fascinating, invaluable lesson. I had
great conversations with the parents of children I babysat. Some parents introduced me to their
favorite music, described their own jobs and interests, and showed curiosity about my schoolwork
and life goals.
In a society where families are increasingly isolated (孤立的) from each other, where children are no
longer raised by a “village” or community of caring individuals, hiring a teenage babysitter is a
simple way to bridge that gap and it also gives that teen a chance to gain some independence. The
next time you’re having a date night with your partner, don’t hesitate to call on that teen down the
street and offer him or her a job. It could be the best thing for all of you.
4. What is the common phenomenon of babysitting in the UK?
A. The adults’ having difficulty watching over their kids.
B. The youth’s lack of interest in babysitting.
C. The increasing average age of babysitters.
D. The rising demand for babysitters.
5. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A. To state the benefits of babysitting.
B. To reveal the kindness of some parents.
C. To share her experiences of babysitting.
D. To show how other households operate.
6. What does the author suggest that parents do in the last paragraph?
A. Create harmonious community culture.
B. Spend more time at home with their kids.
C. Encourage their kids to be more independent.
D. Offer opportunities of babysitting to teenagers.
7. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How to be a qualified babysitter?
B. Does babysitting still make money?
C. What can you learn from babysitting?
D. Is hiring teenage babysitters out of date?
C
Kindergarten represents a crucial environment in which children develop school-related skills and
patterns of engagement. They form the basis for the development of later competence which is
important for academic success. As for later academic skills, kindergarten achievements have been
found to have great predictive value.
Given the long-lasting effects that kindergarten experiences have on later schooling, it is important
to understand the factors associated with children’s learning and motivation during this time. The
quality of teacher-student interaction has been found to be important in terms of many different
academic and socio-emotional outcomes. However, much of the previous work in the field has
focused on children in later grades in elementary school and has been conducted in the United States.
Fewer studies have been conducted in other educational environments and in kindergarten
specifically.
Some researchers investigated bidirectional links between the quality of teacher-child relationships
and children’s interest and pre-academic skills in literacy and math in Finland. Participants were 461
Finnish kindergarteners (6-year-olds) and 48 teachers.
The results indicated that teacher-perceived ( 教 师 感 知 的 ) conflicts predicted children’s lower
pre-academic skills in both literacy and math. It is possible that when children experience conflicts
with teachers, the negative emotions attached to these conflicts are harmful to children’s engagement
in learning and curtail their interest in academic tasks. It’s also possible that children experiencing
conflicts are missing out on time for learning literacy and math, either because they become
separated from instructional activities or because teachers have to spend more instructional time on
behavioral management. The findings highlight the importance of kindergarten teachers being aware
of how their relationships with children can influence children’s later schooling. Therefore, it would
be important to develop pre-service and in-service programs and interventions to help teachers.
Teacher education programs may also benefit teachers not only in academic content and pedagogical
(教育学的) practices but also in strategies used to build supportive relationships with children.
8. What do we learn about kindergarten achievements?
A. They're closely related to kids’ personalities.
B. They greatly affect kids’ later academic skills.
C. They largely depend on the teachers’ competence.
D. They're mainly about kids’ problem-solving abilities.
9. From Paragraph 2, we know that the quality of teacher-student interaction in kindergarten
_____________.
A. has drawn little attention from researchers
B. has been considered very important by teachers
C. has resulted from specific educational environments
D. has formed the basis of many good socio-emotional outcomes
10. What does the underlined word “curtail” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Develop. B. Maintain. C. Reduce. D. Assess.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. To promote the educational programs among kindergarten teachers.
B. To explain the benefits of carrying out pedagogical practices.
C. To call on kids to build up good relationships with teachers.
D. To highlight the importance of kindergarten teachers.

Last March, a disaster hit Asia’s garment-producing (服装生产) countries. Major fashion brands
cancelled orders worth more than $40 billion as a result of store closures and a severely weakened
market caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It destroyed the livelihoods of millions of garment
workers who already struggle to get by on low wages.
As moral fashion activists, NGOs, and concerned shoppers realized what was happening, a campaign
took root on social media, using the hashtag ( 话 题 标 签 ) “Paytjp”. It wanted to make brands
responsible. In the words of Ayesha Barenblat, founder of a consumer activist group called Re/make,
the hashtag “made it very dear to the press and consumers that we were not asking for charity but
simply good business”. The hashtag later changed into a more formal movement called PayUp
Fashion. It hopes to maintain the pressure n major brands to revolutionize the fashion industry, once
and for all. PayUp Fashion lays out some actions that fashion brands must take in order to build a
garment industry that’s friendly to garment workers and the environment. It also maintains a Brand
Tracker list of 40 major labels to see how quickly they move toward meeting these demands.
The movement went viral over the summer and won support of many people. Now, it has expanded
the brands it tracks beyond just those who cancelled orders. What’s more, it has successfully pushed
brands including Zara, GAP, and Next to pay at least $15 billion owed to garment factories.
However, its success is far from enough. It’s crucial to stay focused on what real transformative
change means for the fashion industry. It’s not about using more recycled water bottles, fabric made
from mushrooms, or wearing 3D-printed clothing, as innovative as these technologies may be. Nor is
it about praising brands for so-called transparency (透 明度 ). Real transformation means that all
human workers are paid a fair wage for a fair day’s work and that factories and garment workers are
equal partners in fashion. “That,” a journalist Elizabeth Cline said, “would be a truly innovative
change.”
12. What does the disaster mentioned in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The low wages of garment workers.
B. The quick and wide spread of COVID-19.
C. The food shortages caused by store closures.
D. The struggle of garment workers due to cancelled orders.
13. What was the original purpose of the campaign started on social media?
A. To urge fashion brands to take responsibility.
B. To set up a fund for the fashion industry.
C. To release the pressure on major brands.
D. To promote the influence of Re/make.
14. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 4?
A. The support from all walks of life.
B. The achievement of the movement.
C. The increasing orders from fashion brands.
D. The expanded tracking range of the movement.
15. What expectation does Elizabeth Cline have according to the text?
A. Increasing transparency in the fashion industry.
B. Improving the rights and interests of garment workers.
C. Applying advanced technologies to the fashion industry.
D. Making the fashion industry more environmentally friendly.

A stopwatch (秒表) is a hand-held timer (计时器) used in sporting events such as track meets, swim
meets and other games. 16 It’s then stopped at the press of a button at the exact moment when an
athlete like a runner finishes the event.
There’s some controversy over the inventor of the stopwatch. According to some reports,
Englishman George Graham was considered one of the early inventors of the stopwatch. He created
a device which could start and stop very precisely 17 Thus, he’s today forgotten by many people.
A stopwatch can be divided into two types. One is the traditional stopwatch, resembling a pocket
watch with an analog (指针式的) face. The other one is the digital stopwatch. It s true that some
people prefer the traditional look of an analog stopwatch. 18
A stopwatch has many functions. If the distance of a track is known, some stopwatches will calculate
speed based on the time that the competitor spends in covering the distance. Serving as a countdown
timer is another function of a stopwatch. 19. And at the press of a button, the timer starts counting
clown to zero. Calendar, pacer and alarm functions might also be included in a stopwatch.
20 A film student might use a stopwatch to better understand the story structure. Stopwatches will
also be found in research laboratories. And some teachers use stopwatches to strengthen students’
debate skills.
A. How did George Graham create it?
B. However, he never patented his device.
C. Stopwatches, thus, are used in many fields.
D. Digital stopwatches are mainly used in sports.
E. It’s started by hand at the beginning of an event.
F. Digital stopwatches are more accurate, though.
G. This device can be set for a specific amount of time.

“Attention! Everyone! I would like you guys to meet Jose from Mexico. He is new here, so be nice
to him and show him around,” said Mrs. Espinoza.
No one talked and the classroom was silent. And then some students stared at Jose and began to
whisper to each other. Jose was wearing loose gray pants and a dirty white shirt. His shoes made a
short and loud sound when he walked to his desk. Everyone giggled (咯咯地笑) at the sound, but no
one talked to him. I wondered how he felt being here and having everyone’s eyes on him and even
being laughed at. I wanted to say “Hi” but I was afraid that I might be made fun of for talking to “the
new kid”.
In the following days, Jose was lonely and he struggled to fit into the new life. Besides, it was hard
for him to learn a new language and make new friends in the new school.
Every day he would sit by himself and eat his lunch quietly, without a word, just focusing on his
food. Many of the students would pass by and make unfriendly comments on him. He would just
frown (皱眉) and look down at the floor. I wanted to be kind to him but. still I couldn’t take the first
step.
When I got home, I talked to my sister about Jose. I told her about him being new here and about
how the students at school treated him. Then I told her that I wanted to talk to him but I was worried
that my friends would make fun of me. She said with a smile, “If they are your true friends, they will
stick by you no matter what you do. You know, those who mind don’t matter and those who matter
don’t mind.” The next day, I knew exactly what I was going to do.
Paragraph 1:
During the lunch time, I got my lunch and walked towards Jose.

Brewing (酝酿) beer usually needs large amounts of water, energy, and heat, which ends up getting a
small amount of beer. Besides, it also causes significant quantities of packaging waste. Karbon
Brewing Co. hopes to solve these problems by tackling (处理) them better than any other Canadian
brewery date become Canada’s first carbon-negative brewery by 2024.
Its press release goes like this: “Unlike other large-scale breweries that produce high emissions of
pollution during their production cycle, being completely carbon-negative means that Karbon’s CO2
footprint is far less than neutral. This allows Karbon Brewing Co. to remove greenhouse gases from
the atmosphere as opposed to adding to it.” Karbon plans to achieve this by relying more on
technological solutions than carbon offsets, although offsets will be used occasionally.
The company is also analyzing its packaging and working with a supplier to create biodegradable
(可生物降解的) drink holders, recyclable can sleeves, and more. According to Thomas Durek, a
reporter, “Many eco-friendly packing solutions do not exist on a large scale in the brewing industry.
It’s great to see a company trying to change that and talking and thinking about sustainability in a
serious, comprehensive way.”
The company says it is committed to using local ingredient suppliers as much as possible, which
helps to reduce its carbon footprint and builds a more secure supply chain. In the words of
co-founder Stephen Tyson, “Traditionally the innovation in the craft beer industry has been around
new recipe development and beer style. We wanted to change the focus towards the brewing process
and cleaning up the supply chain.” Karbon plans to sell its products at LCBO (Liquor Control Board
of Ontario) stores, beer stores, and grocery stores across the province (it’s currently in the LCBO’s
application phase), and it will offer direct delivery in the near future. The company has also signed
up for 1% for the Planet to support local non-profits.
If Karbon Brewing Co. is able to prove that its way of making a carbon-negative brewery is
practicable, then hopefully other companies will adopt similar practices and then customers will
come to expect it as part of a socially responsible business.

I used to think that I had to talk all the to and that silence was awkward. I later learned that silence
can give people space to think which helps them make more interesting conversation.
Silence has a purpose in all conversations. Constantly talking can make you come off as anxious.
And when you know a person well, being together without talking can help you bond. 1
Don’t rush your words. 2 This signals to the other person that silences are completely normal when
talking to you and that you were never bothered by the silence in the first place. If you rush it, you
can come off as if you tried to fill the silence as soon as you could.
3 If someone asks you a question, don’t be too anxious to get the answer. You should take the time to
think for a few seconds. People will appreciate that you take their question seriously and don’t just
roll out the standard answer.
No one waits for you to come up with what to say. People don’t wait for you to “solve” the situation
by coming up with something to say. 4 If you show that you’re comfortable with silence, you will
help them be more comfortable. Then you can both feel easier to start your conversation.
Don’t try to talk more if someone adds less to the conversation than usual. 5 Let there be silence. If
the silence is hard for you, you can just use mindfulness to accept silence rather than fighting it.
A. Make it a habit to reflect before you speak.
B. It could be that they are in no mood to talk.
C. You can jump to subjects that interest them.
D. Speak calmly when you start talking after a silence.
E. You can get the feedback through the tone of their voice.
F. It can be a sign that you feel comfortable with each other.
G. If anything, they’re trying to figure out what they should say to end the silence.

第一节
Dear Eric,
At your request, I’d like to share my opinion about the most popular job in the future with you.
In my opinion, the most popular job in the future will be the one concerning the environment.
As is known to us all, people’s life is closely related to the environmental protection. So someone
majoring in the environmental data analysis may be popular. I’ve been interested in math, so I plan
to choose data analysis as my major at college in the hope of playing a role in protecting the
environment.
Looking forward to your sharing.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Paragraph 1:
During the lunch time, I got my lunch and walked towards Jose. Everyone looked at me,
wondering what I was about to do. I sat next to him. He just kept eating his food without saying a
word. I decided I’d have to start the conversation. I said, “Hi!” He looked up at me with a big
smile. I smiled back to him immediately. While we talked and ate our food together, I realized he
was a nice and kind guy. We talked about sports and hobbies. Jose told me that living in America
was really different from living in Mexico.
Paragraph 2:
As days went on, I kept talking to Jose but I noticed I was losing some friends. Regardless of that,
I still stayed with Jose and stood by him. And joyfully some kids gradually came to join us and stuck
by us. Jose and I became best friends and we helped each other in life and study. From little kids in
fourth grade to young adults in tenth grade, Jose has always been there for me since that day. So we
should never judge someone by the way they look or dress — they might end up changing our life.
