Passage 1
Few people realize that it takes the army of volunteers for one young child to have a half-hour riding
lesson. I volunteer at Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association (VTEA) in Alder grove. B. C. , close to the
Washington State border. It takes a few paid staff and an army of volunteers-approximately eighty-to take care of a
dozen horses and help with eighty or more children during the week. There is a large barn to clean, and hay nets
and water buckets to brush and fill. Specific feeds for each horse must be prepared twice daily…. The list is
endless.
To prepare a horse for a ride, someone has to bring it in from outside, at times sinking into inches of black,
sticky mud during the winter months. Usually, two volunteers groom (刷洗梳毛) the horse and put on the special
saddle. Then they lead the horse to where the lesson takes place. There, one volunteer leads the horse, and usually
two walk alongside for safety, one on each side. Then the horse must be returned to the barn, unsaddled, cleaned
and fed.
Yet so many people willingly give their time-because the children need us. Ranging in age from two upwards,
the children have varying degrees of mental disabilities. Some have severe physical handicaps ( 残 疾 ). Riding
strengthens their muscles and bones, enabling them to enjoy a more fruitful life.
Throughout my past life as an accountant, business author and speaker, I volunteered on many levels and in
many organizations. However, a terrible motor-vehicle accident changed my life in a split second when my car was
hit—as was my head——causing severe brain injury. It was hard to accept a new "me" and her often-frustrating
limitations, until I discovered that I needed to do something that I have a passion for. I’d loved horses from
childhood, and working with them and with the children has helped turn my life around, making me warm from the
inside out. The journey back has been painful but worthwhile. Now, fourteen years later, I am a different, more
simplified person.

马,帮助孩子们骑马,给作者带来温暖,让作者找回了自己。
1.C 【解析】主旨大意题。根据第二段“To prepare a horse for a ride, someone has to bring it in from outside, at
times sinking into inches of black, sticky mud during the winter months. Usually, two volunteers groom (刷
洗梳毛) the horse and put on the special saddle. Then they lead the horse to where the lesson takes place.
There, one volunteer leads the horse, and usually two walk alongside for safety, one on each side. Then the
horse must be returned to the barn, unsaddled, cleaned and fed.
根据第一段中“It takes a few paid staff and an army of volunteers-approximately
eighty-to take care of a dozen horses and help with eighty or more children during the week. There is a large

Passage 2
“The Great Good Place” is a short story by American novelist Henry James, first published in 1900. Its
theme is that people need a place where they can escape the grind of daily life. This is an idea that Howard Schultz,
who turned the Starbucks coffee chain into an international giant, used in his business strategy.
Born in 1952, Schultz grew up in Brooklyn. After university, he worked for a firm supplying coffee-making
equipment. Shortly after working there, Schultz noticed that a company in Seattle was buying a surprisingly large
amount of the firm's equipment, and he decided to investigate. It turned out to be a simple coffee-bean store, but its
owners were committed to teaching the public to appreciate good coffee.
This store in Seattle opened in 1971 and took its name from Starbuck, a sailor in the classic novel Moby Dick.
Its logo was a two-tailed mermaid. Fascinated by its owners' commitment to coffee, Schultz joined Starbucks.
Later, on a trip to Europe, he was impressed by the way that street cafés in Italy were both meeting points and
places to drink espresso. This was something American didn't have yet.
In 1985, Schultz started his own coffee-bar business, which soon became a success. Two years later, he got
together with some other investors and bought Starbucks for US $ 3. 8 million. Adopting the name and logo,
Schultz developed a marketing strategy that turned ordinary cafés into fashionable outlets for coffee. He used clever
tricks, such as selling coffee in "short", "tall" and "grande" size rather than the usual small, medium, and large.
Customers learned to pronounce unfamiliar Italian names like latte and macchiato. Schultz actually created a
market that hadn't existed before.

countries. Today, millions of people a week visit Starbucks locations in countries globally. Clearly, these customers
are happy with the "great good place".

Passage 3
I’m a standup comic. One day, a woman from The Daily News called and said she wanted to do an article
on me. When she had finished interviewing me for the article, she asked, “What are you planning to do next?” Well,
at the time, there was absolutely nothing I was planning on doing next, so I asked her what she meant, pausing for a
moment. She told me she was interested in me! So I thought I’d better tell her something. What came out was, “I’m
thinking about breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for Fastest-Talking Female.”
The newspaper article came out the next day, and the writer had included my parting remarks about trying to
break the world’s Fastest-Talking Female record. At about 5: 00 p.m. that afternoon I got a call from Larry King
Live, which I had never heard of, asking me to go on the show. They wanted me to try to break the record, and they
told me they would pick me up at 8: 00---because they wanted me to do it that night!
Then I sat down to figure out what on earth I was going to do on the show. I called Guinness to find out how to
break a fast-talking record. They told me I would have to recite something either Shakespeare or the Bible.
Shakespeare and I had never really gotten along, so 1 figured the Bible was my only hope. I began practicing and
practicing, over and over again. I was both nervous and excited at the same time.
Then I decided just to give it my best shot, and I did. I broke the record, becoming the World’s Fastest-talking
Female by speaking 585 words in one minute in front of a national television audience. I broke it again two years
later, with 603 words in a minute. My career took off.
People often ask me how I did that. I tell them I live my life by this simple philosophy: I always say yes first;
then I ask, “Now, what do I have to do to accomplish that?” Then I ask myself, “What is the worst thing that can
happen if I don’t succeed? The answer is, I simply don’t succeed! And what’s the best thing that can happen? I
succeed!
What more can life ask of you? Be yourself, and have a good time!

Passage 4
There’s no doubt that Dolly Parton knows how to light up a stage; however, she’s also spent a number of
decades trying to bring a spark to children’s education.
Through programs such as the Buddy Program and the Imagination Library, the American singer is sharing her
passion for giving kids a better chance in life across the states and further in the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland.
Among other charity efforts, Parton was inspired to introduce the Buddy Program after seeing the alarming
dropout rate in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1990. That year 34% of schoolkids dropped out of high
school—a decision they reached around fifth or sixth grade. The figures were so shocking that Parton decided to
inspire kids with her new program. So, in the same year, she invited the fifth and sixth graders to her amusement
park, Dollywood. She gathered the pupils and asked them to pair up with a friend as part of a motivating buddy
system. If both children went on to graduate, she said she would offer them both a $500 check as a reward. That
year the percentage of kids abandoning their education dropped to an unbelievable 6%, and continues to be around
that rate today.
It was after the success of the Buddy Program that Parton wanted to address the issue of early education even
further. To help give kids from disadvantaged backgrounds a better chance at school, the singer started her
Imagination Library in 1995. Over the following 25 years the program has seen babies and toddlers enjoy new
books every month thanks to her generosity.
And the singer shows no sign of stopping. In 2020, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University to try and
help research in the fight against COVID-19.
1. What gave rise to the setting up of the Buddy Program?
A. Lack of charity activities. B. The alarming rate of social crimes.
C. Children’s poor living conditions. D. The great number of children quitting school.
2. Through the Buddy Program, what did Dolly Parton do to help?
A. She sponsored high schools. B. She offered money to dropouts.
C. She encouraged learning in pairs. D. She organized amusement activities.
3. In what way did Imagination Library contribute to education?
A. It offered a chance for children to go to school.
B. It appealed to the public to value education.
C. It helped build libraries all over the country.
D. It donated books to those less fortunate children.
4. Which of the following words can best describe Dolly Parton?

Passage 5
Perhaps thousands of people have searched for a bronze chest full of gold and jewels hidden in the Rocky
Mountains between Santa Fe and the Canadian border hidden by a millionaire adventurer. At least four people died
in their search for the treasure.
But it's all over now. Fenn's Treasure has been found. The 89-year-old adventurer named Forrest Fenn, who
created the treasure hunt, announced the news via his website. “I don't know the person who found it, but the poem
in my book led him to the precise spot,” Fenn wrote. “The treasure was confirmed by a photograph the lucky finder
sent me.”
Forrest Fenn, the man who started the hunt, lives in Santa Fe. He was a pilot in the Vietnam War and later
accumulated his wealth as a dealer in art and antiques. Fenn was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer in 1988 and had
planned to die peacefully in the woods with his treasure. But when his cancer became less serious, he changed his
plan, eventually writing the poem that described his dream resting place, which is where he hid
the treasure. The poem appeared in a memoir called The Thrill of the Chase. Fenn said that the chest wouldn't be
found by accident; only a treasure hunter who correctly interpreted the clues(线索) would find it.
Several treasure hunters went missing while attempting to find the chest, including hunter Jeff Murphy and
Mike Petersen, both of whom went missing in Yellowstone National Park in 2017. Fenn said that he had never been
to the Yellowstone National Park, and that the treasure was not in a dangerous place. "It was in the thick forest of
the Rocky Mountains and had not been moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago," Fenn wrote on
his website. It is illegal to remove anything from a national park, which would cause trouble in legally claiming the
treasure if it was found there.
1. What contributed to the finding of the treasure?
A. Fenn's announcement. B. A poem in Fenn's book.
C. Fenn’s vivid description. D. A photo on Fenn's website.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Who Forrest Fenn was. B. Where Fenn hid the treasure.
C. How the treasure hunt began. D. What Fenn did to find the treasure.
3. What can we learn about "Fenn's Treasure”?
A. It was in Yellowstone National Park.
B. It was found by someone by chance.
C. It was moved from one place to another.
D. It was in Fenn's chosen resting place.
4. What does the underlined word “claiming” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Taking. B. Burying. C. Protecting. D. Acknowledging.

Fe.He was a pilot in the Vietnam War and later accumulated his wealth as a dealer in art and antiques.( 开启寻找
之旅的人 Forrest Fenn 住在 Santa Fe。他在越南战争中是一名飞行员,后来作为一名艺术品和古董商人积累
了财富。)”以及最后一句“ Fenn said that the chest wouldn't be found by accident; only a treasure hunter who
correctly interpreted the clues(线索) would find it.( Fenn 说,这个箱子不会被偶然发现,只有正确解读线索
的寻宝人才能找到它。)”可知,第三段主要讲述了 Forrest Fenn 的个人经历及他是如何把宝藏隐藏起来让别
人寻找的,故选 C 项。
3.D【解析】细节理解题。根据第三段中“But when his cancer became less serious, he changed his plan, eventually
writing the poem that described his dream resting place, which is where he hid the treasure.(但当他的癌症不那么
严重时,他改变了他的计划,最终写了一首描述他梦中的安息之所的诗,那是他藏宝的地方。)”可知,Fenn
的宝藏在他选择的安息之所。故选 D 项。
4.A 【解析】词义猜测题。根据划线词前文“It is illegal to remove anything from a national park”可知,从国家
公园带走任何东西都是违法的,因此“which would cause trouble in legally claiming the treasure if it was found
there”应是指如果宝藏在国家公园被发现的话,想要合法地“带走”宝藏就会引起不少麻烦,所以划线词的意
思为“带走”。故选 A 项。

Passage 7
North Americans value independence, and Europeans value togetherness. I never fully understood that
stereotype until two months ago, when I left Canada for a 4-month period in a lab in France. On my first day, Pierre,
a Ph. D. student, tapped me on my shoulder and asked: “Coffee?” I nodded and followed him to the common room,
where other grad students were filing in. I sat there, cautiously sipping the bitter liquid and trying hard not to reveal
my uncultured tastes, while lab chatter filled the air.
Coffee breaks are a ceremonial part of lab culture here. The chatter sometimes turns to serious scientific topics.
But mostly, the meet-ups offer a chance to wind down, to share stories about life inside and outside the lab and to
sympathize with people who understand what you’re going through.
The lighthearted atmosphere and sense of community is a welcome contrast to my life in Canada, where I
spent most of my workdays in isolation. I went into the lab each morning with set goals for my day. At lunch, I’d
keep my eyes glued to my computer while I fed forkfuls of salad into my mouth, trying to power through my to-do
list. For 9 months, I struggled to figure out why I couldn’t exactly copy the results of another study. I didn’t want to
trouble my advisor too much. I was also hesitant to ask my labmates for help.
How much we were missing! Researchers need community because good ideas don’t just come from reading
literature and thinking deep thoughts. It’s helpful to bounce ideas off others, and, to have a venue to share the
day-to-day ups and downs of life.
Would coffee breaks have solved all my problems? Probably not. But I think sharing ideas with my peers
would have helped solve my research dilemma. My time in France has taught me that it’s important to create space
for organic conversations about lab life. A scientist’s life can feel isolating, but it’s not necessarily so when you’re
connected to a supportive community.

Passage 8
Sophie became friends with the gray squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after spotting them
running around and wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the
university knows her as the "Squirrel Girl".
Sophie tried bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel
and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do with something to lift their spirits, she started posting
similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Sophie and her squirrels became an
Internet sensation (轰动).
Growing up in a neighborhood outside of State College, Sophie was always fond of birds and animals around
her home, but she didn't interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed (诊断)with Asperger's syndrome,
but the squirrels changed that. "The squirrels help me break the ice, because I'll be sitting here patting a squirrel and
other people will come over and well just start like feeding the squirrels together and
chatting about them," she said, "I am a lot more outgoing."
And in case you're wondering how Sophie is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it
has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut
butter on the prop (道具), and they'll grab it. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and
invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn
their trust, though.
This year, Sophie is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer
and educate people on how to preserve the environment. As for her furry friends, Sophie plans to stay in the area
and visit them as often as she can.

rather than share it.
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy (民主).
And this effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.”
Hours after the inauguration her two books — which are to be released later this year — became number 1 and

Passage 10
Our school owned a boat named Jolie Brise. It was one of the most famous tall ships in the world and
three times winner of the Fastnet Race. The boat was unusual: especially for a remote grammar school in Wiltshire,
about as far away from the sea as it can get in England. Obviously, such a site didn't match its fame.
Mr Parish had originally intended to join the Royal Navy but ended up as a teacher at our school. Some pupils
guessed that he still felt the call of the ocean-perhaps because his lessons were almost entirely devoted to
navigation(航海). They argued that it was deeply unfair to learn about navigation but never actually go to sea. Then
Mr. Parish, seeing a bunch of young people prepared to crew the boat, allowed them to sail her in return for
working on the boat. And that was the beginning of the school sailing club.
By the time I arrived, the sailing club had grown. At weekends, we would work on her all day, cleaning and
painting her, and collapse into sleeping bags on the floor at night. Then came the big day when a school sailing trip
was announced. Its destination was Saint-Malo. But it also meant that we had to refit the ship by removing every
piece of ballast(压舱物)and replacing the bilge water(底舱污水)before we were allowed to sail.
And I did learn the ropes on that school trip. I learned how to operate a ship in the high waves. I learned the
meaning of teamwork and became a better team player. I also learned that the best fish is the one that you have
caught and cooked yourself from a boat that you have rebuilt and sailed yourself.
1. What was unusual about the boat Jolie Brise?
A. It was in a perfect condition.
B. Its lawful owner was Mr. Parish.
C. It won glory for the Royal Navy.
D. Its location wasn't as famous as it was.
2. Why was the sailing club set up?
A. The crew were selected.
B. The boat needed workers.
C. Mr. Parish tried to explore the sea.
D. Students asked to practice navigation.
3. What finally made the school sailing trip possible?
A. The club’s permission.
B. Mr. Parish’s sailing experience.
C. The students’ preparing the ship for it.
D. The school’s offering financial support.
4. What does the underlined phrase “learn the ropes” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Learn to cook.
B. Master useful skills.
C. Ensure sailing safety.
D. Use ropes properly.

Passage 13
A dear friend sent me a letter and handmade card in the mail today. On the outside of the card was a
cutout picture of a hummingbird(蜂鸟) in mid-Night. With is wings, it flew deep into a flower Below. it was a
quote by Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky: “The world will be saved by beauty.” I smiled with both my face and
heart when I saw it.
Looking at it reminded me of all the beauty in this world. I thought about the beautiful green forested
mountains of my home. I thought of the fields of summer wildflowers blessing the world with their colors. I
thought of the blue oceans that stretched from horizon to horizon. I thought of the sunsets in the desert wit their
deep, rich reds and glorious golds. I thought of the endless variety of animals: green hummingbirds, white polar
bears, red birds, gray wolves and blinking lightning bugs. I thought of the silver moon smiling down from the sky
surrounded by a sea of stars.
Yet, I knew that it wasn’t the beauty of any of these things that would save the world. It was instead the beauty
of human souls filed with light and love. It was these souls so full of love for each other and for this world that
would save our planet. It was this love working through people that would make this world the place it was truly
meant to be in the end.

Passage 14
Dr. Scott Witt was at home with his family when he received a call from the hospital he works at
informing him that they were going to evacuate(疏散) the patients because a deadly wildfire was spreading.
Witt decided to head to the hospital since he needed to make sure his patients were safe. He felt like these
patients were like his own families. "The only way I could take was to get on my motorcycle," said Witt, who
failed to get to the hospital in his truck since the parts of the roads were closed off or impassable in big vehicles. "
I had to avoid where the fire had spread to," he said.
By the time he arrived, the fire was reaching the parking lot. The hospital already smelled with a lot of smoke
and he wanted to move everybody to safety. With the hospital staff’s help, Witt managed to evacuate all his eight
patients into an ambulance that rushed them to a nearby hospital. Even though Witt had done more than enough, he
decided to follow the ambulance onto the freeway to make sure the patients would be made to the hospital. "At
one point, there was some fire and live wire on the freeway," Witt said. "After getting far away from the fire, I
said to the ambulance driver, ‘I don’t know if it’s the most scary thing I’ve seen but close to it.'"

Passage 15
Last year, my oldest son Matthew went off to college. Things at home were not as “busy” as they used to
be. We still had our 15-year-old son Gabriel with us, but we missed having Matthew around.
My wife soon had a crazy idea. “Let’s get a dog.” she suggested. I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea, but I
agreed. I mean, what better way to replace a kid that has gone off to college than to get a dog.
When we got to the animal shelter, it seemed like every dog was a pit bull (比 特犬 ). I’d had many bad
experiences with pit bulls as a child, so I didn’t want to take one of them home with me.
While I walked along the rows and rows of cold metal cages, a dog caught my eye. He was scared, and looked
like he’d given up on life. There was only one problem: he was a pit bull.
As he looked at me with his big, beautiful eyes, I could see into his soul. I could see how scared he was and
that he just wanted a happy life. I couldn’t just walk away — I had to at least go over and look at him. I approached
his cage, and he just sat there, looking at me. I stuck my finger through the hole in the cage and petted him on the
head. I expected him to get mad, but he didn’t.
I knew that this dog had never felt love before, and that he was enjoying every bit of the love I could give him
in that moment. Tears began to stream down my face because I felt everything that this poor creature was feeling
right then. He just wanted to be loved; he just wanted a home and a family.
It’s been a year since we took the dog home, and our lives have been changed forever.
Now, his favorite thing to do is give us kisses with his giant tongue every morning. He is always there to greet
us when we come home with a huge smile. He’s shown us more love than any other living creature on Earth ever
had before. And every time I look into his eyes I see love, compassion and gratitude — things I never thought that a
pit bull was capable of feeling.
