different Internets whose limits are determined by national or regional borders.

The vaccine ( 疫 苗 ) news continues to seem very encouraging. Britain started its mass
vaccination effort and the U.S. isn’t far behind.
But there is still one dark cloud hanging over the vaccines that many people don’t yet
understand.
The vaccines will be much less effective at preventing death and illness in 2021 if they are
英语试题 第 4 页(共 14 页)
introduced into a population where the coronavirus is still severe—as is now the case in the U.S.
A vaccine is like a fire hose (消防龙头). A vaccine that’s 95 percent effective, as Moderna’s and
Pfizer’s versions appear to be, is a powerful fire hose. But the size of a fire is still a bigger
determinant of how much destruction occurs.
At the current level of infection in the U.S. (about 200,000 confirmed new infections per day), a
vaccine that is 95 percent effective—distributed at the expected pace—would still leave a terrible toll
(伤亡人数) in the six months after it was introduced. Almost 10 million or so Americans would catch
the virus, and more than 160,000 would die.
This is far worse than the toll in a different situation where the vaccine was only 50 percent
effective but the U.S. had reduced the infection rate to its level in early September (about 35,000 new
daily cases). In that case, the death toll in the next six months would be kept to about 60,000.
It’s worth pausing for a moment on this comparison. If the U.S. had maintained its infection rate
from September and Moderna and Pfizer had announced this fall that their vaccines were only 50
percent effective, a lot of people would have panicked.
But the reality we have is actually worse.
How could this be? No vaccine can get rid of a pandemic immediately, just as no fire hose can
put out a forest fire. While the vaccine is being distributed, the virus continues to do damage.
There is one positive way to look at this: Measures that reduce the virus’s spread — like
mask-wearing, social distancing and rapid-result testing—can still have great consequences. They can
save more than 100,000 lives in coming months.
24.How does the author mainly present his argument?
A.By giving definitions. B.By categorizing facts.
C.By drawing comparisons. D.By appealing to emotions.
25.Which does the author think is a better way to save lives?
A.Improving the effectiveness of the vaccines.
B.Producing a greater variety of vaccines.
C.Looking at the situation in a positive way.
D.Wearing masks and practicing social distancing.
26.What does paragraph 6 tell us?
A.The vaccines are less effective than expected.
B.The US have controlled the spread of the coronavirus.
C.The death toll in the next six months will be about 60,000.
D.Fewer people will die if the infection rate is lower.
27.What can we infer from the text?
A.The vaccine is the hope of wiping out the pandemic.
B.The public are optimistic about the effects of the vaccine.
C.The public are concerned about the high infection rate.
D.The distribution of vaccine will end the pandemic quickly.

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for “sport”. Progress in this
direction is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take par realize
the cruelty and destruction.
The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly. Children too young to develop proper
judgments through independent thought are led a long way away by their gunning parents. They are
subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and
gun-carrying as a way of putting redder blood in the veins (血管). They are persuaded by gunner
magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill. In school they view motion pictures which are
supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to
stimulate (刺激) a desire to own a gun.
Wildlife is disappearing because of shooting and because of the loss of wild-land habitat. Habitat
loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by
shooting? There doesn’t seem to be any chance if the serious condition of our birds is not improved.
Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to the gunners alone. Although most people do not shoot, they
seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then,
is to bring the truth about sport shooting to the great majority of people.
Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to life as we do and that there is
nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The
gunners like to describe what they do as character-building, but we know that to wound an animal and
watch it go through the agony of mortality can make nobody happy. If, as they would have you
believe, gun-carrying and killing improve human character, then perhaps we should encourage war.
28.According to the text, most people do not seem to be against hunting because ________.
A.they have little knowledge of it B.it helps to build human character
C.it is too costly to stop killing wildlife D.they want to keep wildlife under control
29.The underlined word “agony” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A.difficulty B.tress
C.pain D.sadness
30.According to the text, the films children watch at school actually ________.
A.teach them how to deal with guns safely
B.praise hunting as character building
C.describe hunting as a physical exercise
D.encourage them to have guns of their own
31.By saying “perhaps we should encourage war”, the writer intends to tell us that ________.
A.Hunting to build human character makes no sense.
B.War in the best way to improve human character.
C.We are on the edge of war against gunners.
D.Protecting wildlife from gunners is extremely difficult.

Last summer my daughter’s school was blown up. No students were harmed, but the main
building was completely destroyed, as well as the nearby dorms.
Before you start trying to ask when this horrible act took place on U.S. soil, I should mention
that this attack didn’t happen in reality, rather in my daughter’s carefully constructed Minecraft world.
During an online journey with a few friends, a stranger came to her school and bombed the school she
had carefully built. In a minute, her school was ruined. Sure, no actual property was damaged. But the
emotional pain she felt was very much real. She thought this was a form of terrorism.
I shared this act of absurd online violence on my Facebook page, and fellow parents with
Minecraft-loving children were just as shocked as I was. I had thought this was a unique experience,
and my daughter was just unlucky that this happened to her. But, as it turned out, she was far from
alone. The acts were performed by computer bullies (暴徒) known as “griefers”. The platform that
my daughter was playing was the Minecraft: Pocket Edition (PE) version, which is popular with
younger players. While she once only played in creative mode ( 模 式 ), she began to play in the
multi-player mode so that she and a few friends from school could build and create together. That
multi-player choice made it possible for a stranger, one of these “griefers”, to do damage.
It was a painful lesson for my daughter that dangers happened suddenly. She understood we have
to protect ourselves from bad people in the real world. Still, there was some goodness that came out
of the ruins. Many fellow players of hers took the time to help her rebuild her school, which has been
set up again. She is moved. Also, this experience opened her eyes.
32.What was the result of the daughter’s school being blown up?
A.All the buildings but the dorms were ruined.
B.Many students were seriously injured.
C.Money needed to be seriously injured.
D.The author’s daughter felt hurt a lot.
33.Before talking to other parents about the attack the author had thought that ________.
A.her daughter should be blamed for it
B.this attack was just a rare incident
C.danger happened all of a sudden on the Internet
D.her daughter was too lonely
34.Which of the following is NOT true about the “griefers”?
A.They can help players build and create a new world.
B.They are performed by computer bullies.
C.They are likely to cause damage in the multi-player mode.
D.They disturb and cause sadness to game players.
35.What did her daughter do after the incident?
A.Quit playing Minecraft. B.Learned to defend herself against bad people.
C.Gave up multi-player mode. D.Decided to rebuild her school independently.

We think of winter as cold and flu season, but the cold temperatures have powerful biological
upsides too.
Boosts your brain
36 Studies have found that people perform some cognitive (认知的) tasks like making
decisions better when the temperature is cooler. Research has also shown that people are less willing
to handle complex tasks in the summer than in the winter.
Burns calories (卡路里)
When it’s cold, your body works harder to keep your core temperature, which is typically, about
98.6 degrees (Fahrenheit scale). “Our bodies use a considerable amount of energy to keep us warm
and to dampen the air we breathe when we’re out in the cold.” explains Stacy Tucker, an expert from
Kansas City. 37 A recent study showed that participants burned 34 percent more calories
when they hiked in 14- to 23-degree temperatures than they did hiking on 50-degree days.
Activates healthy fat
We know accumulating too much ordinary fat or “white fat” can endanger our health. But adults
also have small amounts of beneficial “brown fat” that can quicken their metabolism (新陈代谢) and
bum more calories 38 .
Encourages better sleep
Your body’s core temperature drops when you’re trying to sleep. 39 , but it’s much faster
in winter, says Tucker. Plus, with darker mornings, you naturally sleep later.
40
Yes, you might get more colds during the winter. However, studies have shown that the immune
system can be activated by colder temperatures, which improves our ability to fight infections,
explains Tucker. That said, the flu virus becomes strong in cold, dry air, and time spent indoors
increases your chance of infection. To reduce risk, get your annual flu shot, wash your hands
frequently, and go outside.
A.Fights infections
B.So fasten your boots
C.Suffers from infections
D.Colder temperatures can help you think more clearly
E.And cold temperatures can activate this useful fat
F.Exercising in the winter makes heart muscles stronger
G.This process can take up to two hours in the summer

The Guardian view on academic publishing: disastrous capitalism
Scientific publishing has long been a licence 56 (print) money. Scientists need journals in

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Collin was lying on his back, tossing (抛掷) a baseball toward the ceiling when his bedroom
door opened. His sister, Carina, barged (乱闯) in and perched (停留) on the edge of his bed. Collin
could tell she’d been crying.
“What’s wrong?” Collin asked. “Homesick again?”
Carina nodded.
“Yeah, me too.” Collin sighed.
Their family had move to the Moon Colony (殖民地) 4 nearly four months ago. It still didn’t feel
like home. The dwellings (公寓) were cozy, but outside everything was gray, rocky and lifeless.
“I miss my friends,” Carina said gloomily (满脸愁容地). “And green grass and swimming, and
英语试题 第 10 页(共 14 页)
everything. I even miss the sound of rain on the roof.”
The colony was housed inside a huge transparent dome (圆顶). There was no weather there at
all—no rain or snow or even wind.
“Worst of all,” Carina continued, “my birthday is in two days, and I don’t think Mom and Dad
are planning anything special. They’re too busy.”
“She’s probably right.” thought Collin. Life on the Moon was hectic (紧张忙碌的) for scientists
like their parents. He doubted they had time to plan a party. And how could they anyway? Things
such as balloons and birthday candles didn’t exist on the colony. We don’t even have the rations (定
量口粮) to make a cake.
“Don’t worry.” Collin put an arm around Carina’s shoulder.
Collin wandered toward the agricultural center, where his mom worked. Some days, he helped
her take measurements or harvest crops. Today he found her taking notes in a patch (地块) of tall
tube-like plants.
“What are those?” he asked.
“Bamboo plants,” said Mom. “They are strong and grow fast. They make good building
material.”
He spotted a one-foot section of bamboo that had broken from a larger stalk. “May I have that
piece?”
“Sure.” Mom handed it to him and made a note on her chart.
The next day, as his teacher supervised (监督), Collin drilled tiny holes into the piece of bamboo
and inserted small nails into each hole. He poured a handful of Moon pebbles (鹅卵石) inside the
tube and taped heavy-duty fabric scraps (耐用的织物碎片) over the open ends.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Collin held the bamboo piece carefully as he hurried home.
“What is it?” Carina asked, looking at it curiously.

Collin held the bamboo piece carefully as he hurried home. He hid it behind his back and slid
open the front door. To his surprise, Mom was carrying something that looked like a cake. He looked
closer and realized Mom had topped a flat brown oatcake with dried apples and cinnamon sugar. A
real treat, on the Moon. After the family had sung to Carina and Dad had cut the cake, Collin said,
“And now I have a present for you.” He handed his sister the bamboo rod, “Happy birthday!”
“What is it?” Carina asked, looking at it curiously. “A rain stick,” said Collin. “Whenever you
turn it over, the Moon pebbles fall around the nails and it sounds like rain.” Carina turned the stick,
and the room was filled with a sound like rain drumming on a roof. “It’s Moon rain!” she said. “It
makes me feel like I’m home.” She smiled at Collin and turned the rain stick over again.

M: Yes. I need a room for tomorrow, and do you have any room available?
W: Yes, we do. What kind of room would you like? We have single rooms, double rooms, and
business suites.
M: I’d like a suite, please.
W: No problem, sir.
M: What is the price of the suite?
W: It is $200 per night.
M: It is a little high. I’m told that your hotel is offering a discount now.
W: Yes. If you have a membership card, I can give you 20% discount.
M: Great, here is my membership card.

W: So, Henry, you’ve been to Thailand, right? What did you do there?
M: Well, one of the things I did there was to take a Thai cooking course.
W: Oh, wow. I noticed some people learning to make Thai food from TV. How did you learn that?
M: Well, it was really interesting actually. They picked me up first thing in the morning and drove me
to a local market, where they introduced me to various herbs, fruits and vegetables. Then they
took me to an outdoor kitchen right by a beach. I got to do cooking right in front of a beautiful
beach.
W: Wow.
M: There were two teachers that taught me how to do all these things. And they even taught me how
to do fruit carving.
W: That sounds fantastic. And do you ever cook Thai food at home now?

W: Tim, if you could pick any job, what do you think would be a cool job, a movie actor or a rock
star?
M: Well, I think it would be pretty cool to be a fisherman.
W: Do you get paid a lot of money?
M: Not so much, but you can work with nature. You can catch your own food. How about your cool
job? A movie star?
W: No. I think I would like to be a writer.
M: Why is that?
W: Because a movie star would be good but there is too much fame. Too many people always want to
talk to you or want your autograph. As a writer, you can make your own time and do it whenever
you like.
M: Yeah. Any other jobs you would like to be?
W: I think an astronaut would be good. I like to conduct experiments in a spacesuit. What appeals to
me most is looking back at the Earth, the blue planet.
M: Sounds like you like the ocean. You should think about being a fisherwoman.
W: No way!

Here are the instructions for next weekend’s camping trip in Scotland. There are seventeen
people going on this trip, so it’s important that you arrive at the meeting point at 7∶30 am so that
we’ll be able to leave at 8 am. Please make sure you are on the right minibus. Last week’s e-mail
gave all this information. We should arrive in the camping area at about 2 pm, which will give us
enough time to buy the food we need in the local supermarket. Then we’ll go to the hills where we
will set up a total of four large tents. Each tent will have a tent leader, a person who went on this trip
last year and therefore has the necessary experience. If you have any problems during the two days,
you may turn to your tent leader for help. We are not expecting there to be very bad weather this
weekend in Scotland, but the weather situation in the Scottish hills is always very unpredictable and
for this reason, we have advised everyone to take wet weather clothing with you. If you have any
other questions about the trip, come either to me or Mrs. Sanderson.
