These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—ecstasy so great that I would often … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness—that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what—at last—I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean (毕达哥拉斯) power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery (嘲弄) of what human life should be. I long to alleviate (减少) the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me. 4.Which would be the best title of the essay? A.The suffering of life. B.The truth about love. D.It leads to a marriage. 7.What would the author most probably agree with? A.He regrets that he could not free himself of pity. B.Human love is ultimately disappointing. On April 21, the company announced that a group of 30 self-driving taxis had entered public use in the city and users can hail one for a free ride. “The in-car touch screen can display barriers and dynamic predictions within the 360-degree field of vision and clearly present the conditions of passing vehicles, intersections and traffic lights,” said Cheng Li, director of the test and vehicle operation department of the company. Cheng added users can learn information such as the vehicle's sped and remaining distance through the screen in real time. In September 2019, the company launched a trial service for a group of citizens, who had to first complete training and other procedures. The technical personnel have started testing self-driving taxis and accumulated a lot of test data since the second half of last year. China allowed local governments to arrange road tests for intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), which cover different degrees of autonomous driving, in April 2018. An increasing number of cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, have issued license plates for road tests of ICVs. 8.What is Liu's attitude to self-driving taxis? A.Mixed. B.Cautious. Footballer Marcus Rashford’s petition(请愿 书) to extend free school meals provision(供给) into the school holidays has collected 1.1 million signatures, causing the government to reverse policy. It has restarted the debate over free school meals, fuelled, most recently, by figures forecasting that if the government ends as planned the current £20 top-up(附加款), another 200,000 children will slip into poverty. This is in addition to the 550,000 children already living in poverty previous to Covid-19. The roots of the current school meals system lie in the mid-19th century. In Manchester, independent charities as well as official bodies started to provide free meals for undernourished children in the 1870s. When education became compulsory in the following decades, the extent of the issue became apparent. Proponents of feeding starving children pointed out that it was due to government order that children were in school, not working and contributing to the family food budget, so the government should pay. Reception was mixed. Then, as now, children rejected foods they weren’t used to. Diaries of the time talk of “little bags of mystery” (sausages). Some children were put off brassicas(芥菜类) for life. Finding the balance between cheap and good proved hard. The chief medical officer talked about the lack in calorie value and elements of a well-balanced diet which a needy child does not get at home, such as milk, cheese, eggs, green vegetables, fruit and meat”. In 1980, the Tory government, desperate to cut costs, made provision largely optional and abolished nutritional standards. Over the next 15 years convenience and cost became the most important. Today, school meals provision is linked to benefits: in England around 17 per cent of children are entitled to free school meals. Provision is outsourced(外 包 ), leading to huge variation. In the last year, we’ve seen all of the age-old debates repeated once more. How do we decide who is entitled? How do we guarantee quality? Who decides what children eat? Who pays? Undernutrition does not just have physical effects, but also affects behavior and ability to learn. It has a lifelong impact. The arguments around free school meals seem never to end. But they are hugely important and, until poverty is ended, they will not and should not go away. … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … … … … ○ … … … … 12.Why did Marcus Rashford start the petition? Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our faces. 16. When you think about it, shedding tears from your eyes can cause embarrassment or confusion. But it seems to be an automatic reaction when we get sad or upset. 17. However, the feeling is the same – your cheeks puff up, your eyes tighten and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face. Some of us may weep a little while others might cry like a baby. A study in the UK in 2017 found that women admitted they cry 72 times a year. This was, on average, more than men. Adam Rutherford, lead researcher, says that the result has been pretty much consistent with previous research.18.Are they just more embarrassed about showing their true feelings? Someone might be stressed with a heavy workload. And, as therapist Joanna Cross put it, “crying is often a build-up of frustration and undealt-with situations and it’s a bit of a final straw moment.” She describes how someone might start weeping when they’re just asked to make a cup of tea. Actually, their stress has accumulated to the breaking point. But crying in the office or elsewhere can be an effective stress reliever. It can actually make you feel better.20.Crying your eyes out shows others how you feel, so perhaps it’s a crying shame that more of us, particularly men, don’t cry more often. It sounds simple and achievable. But, 21 , words of wisdom are soon forgotten. Once companies have attracted customers they often 22 the second half of the story. In the excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the product, managers tend to become carried away. They forget what they regard as the boring side of business— 23 that the customer remains a customer. 24 to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the average company loses between 10 and 30 per cent of its customers every years. In constantly changing 25 , this is not surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any idea how many customers they have lost. Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to those lost opportunities and calculate the 26 implications. Research in the US found that a five per cent decrease in the number of defecting (流失的) customers led to 28 increases of between 25 and 85 per cent. In the US, Domino’s Pizza estimates that a regular customer is worth more than $5,000 over ten years. The logic behind cultivating customer 31 is impossible to deny. “In practice most companies’ marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with little attention paid to 32 them”, says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University’ School of Management. “Research suggests that there is a close relationship between retaining customers and making profits. 33 customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour. ” Groups of incoming freshmen happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother's side to tour the campus with other freshmen;I felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made casual introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this ? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college. . . ? My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, "Hi, I'm Jennifer. " "I'm Lauren, "I replied. "Where do you prefer to live? I long to alleviate (减少) the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.” 根据第二段““The taxi drove very smoothly by itself. and the safety supervisor and technician sitting in the front basically didn't have any manual control of it,” said Liu after a 10-minute-long test ride. “The taxi passed through three or four intersections and it was a safe ride 本卷由系统自动生成,请仔细校对后使用,答案仅供参考。 答案第 3页,总 11页 without any unexpected situations.”(在长达 10 分钟的试乘之后,刘说:“出租车自己开得很平 稳。而坐在前排的安全主管和技术人员基本上没有任何手动控制。出租车通过了三四个十字 路口,没有发生任何意外情况,非常安全。”)”可推知,刘对无人驾驶出租车持支持态度。 故选 D。 9.细节理解题。根据第三段中“On April 21, the company announced that a group of 30 self-driving taxis had entered public use in the city and users can hail one for a free ride.(4 月21 日, 该公司宣布,30 辆自动驾驶出租车已在该市投入公共使用,用户可以免费叫到一辆)”可知, Robotaxi 的测试中允许乘客免费使用。故选 C。 10.细节理解题。根据第四段中“The in-car touch screen can display barriers and dynamic predictions within the 360-degree field of vision and clearly present the conditions of passing vehicles, intersections and traffic lights(车内触摸屏可以 360 度视野内显示障碍物和动态预测, 清晰呈现过往车辆、十字路口和交通灯状况)”以及“Cheng added users can learn information such as the vehicle's sped and remaining distance through the screen in real time.
