Dear Mr. Watson
CLAIM AL54323432 — STORM DAMAGE TO ROOF
I received a cheque for $623 dated 26 January in payment of my recent claim. However,
I wish to tell you how upset I have been by the way your Claims Assessor Mr. Michael Tan
handled this claim.
When Mr. Tan first called me, he specifically told me that he believed I had been
overcharged, and he would expect to pay that price for work on a double garage, rather than a
single garage like mine. Mr. Tan suggested that I neither use nor recommend this contractor
again. He continued to tell me it was unlikely for me to receive full payment. Never during
this conversation did he mention that the reason for not receiving full payment was because
of the nature of my insurance policy.
Consequently, I wrote to Mr. Lance Ashe to complain about his pricing, stating that I
was very upset thinking that he could have taken advantage by overcharging a 73-year-old
woman. Mr. Ashe telephoned me immediately and explained his charges in detail. He later
reported back to me that Mr. Tan explained that I would not receive full payment because of
the type of policy I hold which does not cover wear and tear. This was the first time this issue
had been brought to my attention, so you can imagine my surprise.
When I received Mr. Tan's letter of 2 February, this situation was explained. If this had
been explained in the first place I would have accepted it and would not have questioned Mr.
Ashe’s charges. Instead, by telling me initially that I had been overcharged for this work, he
caused a great deal of upset, not only for me but also for Mr. Ashe.
I believed this claim was handled badly by Mr. Tan from the beginning. Therefore, a
great deal of embarrassment has been caused over this issue.
I felt you should know how disappointed and upset I am. I trust you will look into this

We may think we're a culture that gets rid of our worn technology at the first sight of
something shiny and new, but a new study shows that we keep using our old devices(装置)
well after they go out of style. That’s bad news for the environment — and our wallets — as
these outdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same
things.
To figure out how much power these devices are using, Callie Babbitt and her colleagues
at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York tracked the environmental costs for
each product throughout its life — from when its minerals are mined to when we stop using
the device. This method provided a readout for how home energy use has evolved since the
early 1990s. Devices were grouped by generation — Desktop computers, basic mobile
phones, and box-set TVs defined 1992. Digital cameras arrived on the scene in 1997. And
MP3 players, smart phones, and LCD TVs entered homes in 2002, before tablets and
e-readers showed up in 2007.
As we accumulated more devices, however, we didn't throw out our old ones. "The
living-room television is replaced and gets planted in the kids' room, and suddenly one day,

you have a TV in every room of the house," said one researcher. The average number of
electronic devices rose from four per household in 1992 to 13 in 2007. We're not just keeping
these old devices — we continue to use them. According to the analysis of Babbitt's team, old
desktop monitors and box TVs with cathode ray tubes are the worst devices with their energy
consumption and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions(排放)more than doubling during
the 1992 to 2007 window.
So what's the solution(解决方案)? The team's data only went up to 2007, but the
researchers also explored what would happen if consumers replaced old products with new
electronics that serve more than one function, such as a tablet for word processing and TV
viewing. They found that more on-demand entertainment viewing on tablets instead of TVs
and desktop computers could cut energy consumption by 44%.
8.What does the author think of new devices?
A.They are environment-friendly. B.They are no better than the old.
C.They cost more to use at home. D.They go out of style quickly.
9.Why did Babbitt's team conduct the research?
A.To reduce the cost of minerals.
B.To test the life cycle of a product.
C.To update consumers on new technology.
D.To find out electricity consumption of the devices.
10.Which of the following uses the least energy?
A.The box-set TV. B.The tablet.
C.The LCD TV. D.The desktop computer.
11.What does the text suggest people do about old electronic devices?
A.Stop using them. B.Take them apart.
C.Upgrade them. D.Recycle them.

A living robot has been created out of frog skin cells. Xenobots, named after the frog
species Xenopus laevis that the cells come from, were first described last year. Now the team
behind the robots has improved their design and demonstrated new capabilities.
To create the xenobots, Michael Levin at Tufts University in Massachusetts and his
colleagues obtained tissue from 24-hour-old frog embryos after very small physical operation.
Where the previous version relied on the contraction of heart muscle cells to move them

forward by pushing off surfaces, these new xenobots swim around faster. They also live
between three and seven days longer than their previous generation, which only lasted about
seven days, and have the ability to sense their surroundings to some extent, turning red when
exposed to blue light.
“The fundamental finding here is that when you free skin cells from their normal context,
and you give them a chance to build other things than what they normally build,” says Levin.
“To me, one of the most exciting things here is that they are plastic. This idea that even
normal cells, not genetically modified, are in fact capable of building something completely
different.”
Because they are created from cells, the xenobots eventually break apart and are totally
biodegradable, says team member Douglas Blackiston, also at Tufts University. He therefore
hopes that they can be used for biomedical and environmental applications.
Previous attempts at creating living robots, such as a wirelessly controlled cockroach,
have involved dealing with live animals, raising ethical concerns. Xenobots differ from these
because they are made entirely of living cells. “The approach here is maybe ethically the least
problematic because everything starts with cells. They have no neurons, so it's not an animal,”
says Auke ljspeert at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne, who wasn't
involved in the research. “It's really cells, so I find it maybe the cleanest way."
12.How were the new xenobots created?
A.By making use of frog embryos. B.By relying on heart muscle cells.
C.By sensing similar surroundings. D.By exposing them to blue light.
13.Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word “plastic” in Paragraph 3?
A.Fragile. B.Stable. C.Flexible. D.Active.
14.What can be inferred from Douglas Blackiston's words?
A.The xenobots can't break down easily. B . The xenobots need to be further
perfected.
C.The xenobots can be applied in other fields. D.The xenobots have already been widely
used.
15.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The new approach starts with some neurons.
B.Xenobots have raised least ethical concerns.
C.The wireless controlled cockroach is a failure.

Language Learning
Learning a new language can be tricky at any age. But in a recent study, scientists have
pinpointed the exact age at which your chances of reaching fluency in a new language seem
to quickly drop off: 10. Does this mean you should quit your French class if you’re older than
10? Non!
16 . It found that it’s “nearly impossible” to reach fluency if you start learning a
language after age 10. That’s not because language skills start to go downhill. “You’re still
learning fast,” says Joshua Hartshorne, one of the study’s coauthors. “It’s just that you run out
of time, because your ability to learn starts dropping at around 17 or 18 years old.” People
who start learning a new language after age 10 may still become quite good, the authors say.
17.
Kids may be better than adults at learning new languages for many reasons. Children’s
brains are more adaptable than those of adults. 18 . “All learning involves the brain
changing,” Hartshorne says. “Children’s brains seem to be a lot more good at changing.” Kids
may also be more willing than adults to try new things. And while adults tend to fall back on
the rules and patterns of their first language, kids are able to approach a new one with a blank
slate.
19. It promised to guess people’s native language, dialect, and home country, based on
their responses to English grammar questions. At the end of the quiz, people entered their
actual native language. They also reported if and when they had learned any other languages
and where they had lived. Nearly 670,000 people took the quiz. Analyzing people’s responses
and grammar mistakes allowed them to draw conclusions about language learning.
The findings also offer ideas for adults hoping to pick up a new language. 20. Moving
to a place where your chosen language is spoken all the time is the best way for adults to
learn. Learners of all ages can search out native speakers in their community to talk with. By
creating an immersive environment, it’s possible to become good at speaking a new language.
A.Now that’s worth talking about!

Scientists say record heat has cost reef half of corals
The Great Barrier Reef, one of the earth's most precious habitats, lost half of its coral
populations in the last quarter-century, a decline that researchers in Australia said would
continue unless drastic action is taken to reduce the effects of climate change.
Colony sizes were smaller, there were fewer “big mamas," or older large corals that
produce baby corals; and there were fewer of those babies, which are vital to the reefs future
ability to 21 . "Our results show the ability of the Great Barrier Reef to recover — its
resilience (恢复力) — is weakened 22 the past, because there are fewer babies, and
fewer large breeding adults," Dr. Andy Dietzel, the lead author of the study, said in a
statement.
23 a process in which corals turn white as water temperatures rise — contributed
to sleep losses of Barrier Reef in 2016 and 2017. The southern part of the reef was also 24
to record — setting temperatures in early 2020. Researchers cited climate change as one of
the major 25 of disturbances to reef.
“There is no time to 26 they said in a statement. "We must sharply decrease
greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible.”
Researchers were disappointed about what they saw as a lack of attention to the study
from government leaders in Australia, the world's biggest coral exporter. The government has
27 calls to reduce carbon emissions even as heat waves, drought and fires continue to
reveal the country“s situation of being hurt by climate change.

The rain came down steady and hard. Jason Storie heard it but was not worried as he
prepared for a day of caving with five friends in a remote spot 80 miles northwest of his home
in Duncan, on Canada’s Vancouver Island.
It was 6 a.m. on December 5, 2015. As a newcomer to the sport, Jason had gone caving
only four times. This would be his toughest outing yet: a cave called Cascade. It was
dangerous enough that the entrance was blocked by a locked metal door to keep the casual
cavers out. About a mile long and 338 feet deep, Cascade was full of tums and barely
passable tight squeezes.
Jason was new among the group, with the least experience and, at 43, older by a decade
or more. It was his friend Andrew Munoz, 33, who introduced him to the sport. Unlike Jason,
Andrew was an expert caver-a former caving guide, actually.
They hiked a bit before coming to the door, which sat in the ground—you’d miss it if
you weren’t looking for it. It was 10 a.m. With their way lighted by headlamps, they walked
down a narrow passage studded with sharp rocks. The silence was broken by a drip-drip-drip
from above. Soon the drip turned into a light but steady flow, and they were wading in water
up to their ankles, then to their shins.
Two hours later, they approached one of the features that made the cave unique: a
narrow passage not big enough to stand up in that led into a short, tight downhill. This had a
name: Bastard’s Crawl. Four streams met here, and indeed, the water was flowing more
quickly. The sound of the water had turned into a roar. When they finally neared the top of the
Crawl, there were barely four inches of air left between the water and the ceiling. not enough
for them to keep their heads up to breathe. They came to terrifying realization that they were
in danger!
注意:

Michael
Tan
I received a cheque for $623 dated 26 January in payment of my
recent claim. However, I wish to tell you how upset I have been by the way your Claims Assessor
故选 A。
When Mr. Tan first called me, he specifically told me that he
believed I had been overcharged, and he would expect to pay that price for work on a double
garage, rather than a single garage like mine.(当谭先生第一次打电话给我的时候,他明确地告
Consequently, I wrote to Mr. Lance Ashe to complain about his pricing, stating
that I was very upset thinking that he could have taken advantage by overcharging a 73-year-old
Ashe”。故选
D。
Never during this conversation did he mention that the reason for
not receiving full payment was because of the nature of my insurance policy.(在这次谈话中,他从
He later reported
back to me that Mr. Tan explained that I would not receive full payment because of the type of
policy I hold which does not cover wear and tear.(他后来告诉我,谭先生解释说,我不会收到全
故选 A。
However, I wish to tell you how upset I have been by the way
your Claims Assessor Mr. Michael Tan handled this claim.(但是,我想告诉你们,我对你们的理

A living robot has been created out of frog skin cells. Xenobots,
named after the frog species Xenopus laevis that the cells come from, were first described last
故选 A。
The fundamental finding here is that when you free skin cells
from their normal context, and you give them a chance to build other things than what they
This idea that even
normal cells, not genetically modified, are in fact capable of building something completely
A. Fragile.脆弱的;B. Stable.稳

Previous attempts at creating living robots, such as a
wirelessly controlled cockroach, have involved dealing with live animals, raising ethical concerns.
Xenobots differ from these because they are made entirely of living cells. “The approach here is
maybe ethically the least problematic because everything starts with cells. They have no neurons,
so it's not an animal,” says Auke ljspeert at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne,
who wasn't involved in the research.(以前曾尝试制造活体机器人,比如无线控制的蟑螂,都涉

在 when it comes to …

用 have done。故填 have shown。
短语 introduce sb. to sth.
填 to。
以用 who 代替 that,这里被强调的部分是 my closest family,所以既可用 who 也可用 that。
故填 who/that。
故填 was expected。
填 a。

Besides, I watched a 5D film about the mysterious universe and experienced many new things by
being part of it. The most interesting thing was to play chess with a smart robot. To my surprise, it
won the game!
This trip was really unforgettable. By doing interesting experiments myself, I had lots of fun

The water kept rising, and there was no hope of rescue. The hours passed. Jason and Andrew
didn’t dare to move for fear of slipping. They dozed off and then jerked themselves awake. Every
once in a while, one of them turned on his headlamp to check the -water level. An hour later, the
water level went down enough that they could try an escape. Stiff from keeping in one position for
12 hours, they slowly unfolded their bodies. Jason screamed in pain, but he was determined not to
let it stop him.
Slowly but steadily, the group made their way forward. Still, each time Jason moved a leg, he
cried out. Over the next 90 minutes, they made their way toward the entrance, at times in
chest-high water. Now, in a passage that was high enough for them to walk upright, Jason saw
something flicker in the distance. “Lights! I see lights!” Jason shouted out. For the first time since
entering the cave, over 20 hours earlier, Jason’s emotions got the best of him and tears trickled
down his cheeks.
