The warm coast of California is a place where many western monarch butterflies travel to stay during the cold
winter months in the United States. Researchers fear the record low number of monarchs this year could mean the
insects are in danger of disappearing in the near future.
The Xerces Society works on conservation efforts for insects. Last winter, it recorded around 29, ()00
butterflies in its yearly survey. That was similar to the winter before, when an all-time low of 27,000 monarchs
was counted. But the count this year is dangerously low. Fewer than 2,000 orange — and — black butterflies are in
the yearly count this January, which showed a big drop in recent years. On the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains,
another monarch butterfly population has decreased by more than 80 percent since the mid-1990s.
Causes for the extremely low numbers of butterflies in the western states include homebuilding and chemical
use, which destroyed milkweed plants along their migratory (迁移的) path. The plants are needed for monarch
butterflies to grow and develop. Climate changes interfere with the growth of wild plants. And huge wildfires in the
west may also have influenced their migration.
A 2017 Washington State University study predicted that monarch butterflies would likely disappear within 10
to 20 years if the population dropped below 30,000 and nothing was done to save them.
Action should be taken to provide protection for their food supply and environment, including their migratory
path. The Xerces Society said it will keep working with other partners to protect the monarch. The organization
added that people can help by planting flowers and milkweed along these butterflies' migratory path.
4. Why do the researchers fear the possibility of monarch butterflies disappearing?
A. Because the warm coast of California is getting cold during the winter months.
B. Because most of them are killed by huge wildfires.
C. Because the population of this species is varied.
D. Because the number of monarch butterflies has dropped sharply.
5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Milkweed plants need monarchs to grow and develop.
B. Factors of the decrease in numbers of monarchs.
C. Human activities have influenced the climate change.
D. The importance of milkweed to the environment.
6. What does the underlined phrase "interfere with" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Lead. B. Help. C. Reserve. D. Disturb.
7. What can we infer from the last 2 paragraphs?
A. Within 10 to 20 years monarch butterflies will disappear.
B. The migratory path of monarch butterflies is under protection.
C. Milkweed should be planted along monarchs' migratory path.
D. It is dangerous if the number of a species is below 30,000.

The mental health of girls declines sharply at 14 and worsens through adolescence, a two-year study <
has found. It concluded that heavy social media use and a lack of exercise, both of which have been
exacerbated (加剧)by the pandemic, made teenagers well-being and self-esteem worse.
Research from the Education Policy Institute and the Princes Trust said that while well-being and self-esteem
are similar in boys and girls at the end of primary school, and both decline, girls see a greater decrease by the age of
14.
However, boys put into the bottom set al primary school had much lower self-esteem at 14 than their peers,
according to the study, which used data from 5,000 young people in England in the Millennium Cohort Study.
The latest study said that heavy use of social media was associated with declines in well-being and self-esteem
in girls ages 14 and 17, and worse well-being in 14-year-old boys. It said frequent physical exercise played a
positive role in limiting depressive symptoms especially for boys at age 14, adding: At age 17, frequency of
exercise had a positive impact on both boys and girls. Participation in activities and sports will have fallen
considerably due to school closures and lock down, likely adversely affecting mental health and well-being.
Jonathan Townsend, UK chief executive of the Princes Trust, called for quick action to "prevent scarring this
generations future". He added :"The decline in young people's well-being and self-esteem as they go into their mid
to late teens shows the need for early intervention and ongoing support to prevent future harm and potential crises."
The transition from childhood to adolescence can be turbulent, and the findings of this report underline why
addressing and supporting young people's mental health will only become more crucial as the impact of the
pandemic unfolds.
The report made several recommendations, including a 650 million post pandemic package to schools for well
being funding, matching academic catch-up funding. It also called for an increase in mental health teaching, the
publication of a plan for rolling out four — week waiting times for specialist mental health care, and ensuring that
all young people can take part in physical activity.
8. At which age does the mental health of girls decline sharply?
A. 13. B. 14. C. 15. D. 16.
9. Which of the following would Jonathan Townsend most probably agree with?
A. Teenagers need help as they grow into adolescence.
B. The impact of the pandemic needs to be dealt with.
C. The self-esteem of teenagers will decline as they grow up.
D. The report will help solve the problems of teenagers.
10. What is the author's attitude in writing this text?
A. Indifferent. B. Objective. C. Tolerant. D. Skeptical.
11. What is the text mainly talking about?
A. Teenagers facing worsening mental health.
B. Recommendations for girls on mental health.
C. The current situation of girls' mental health.

When Mao Zedong, the main founder of the People's Republic of China, wrote in May 1965 about his ambition
to “rise high to the sky and pick the Moon" in a poem during a visit to the Jinggang Mountain in south China's
Jiangxi Province, the first rural revolutionary base established by the Communist Party of China in 1927, China had
barely made any marks in space exploration. The country had to wait five more years before sending its first
indigenous satellite to the space atop the Long March 1 rocket.
On November 24, 2020, the Long March 5, the country's largest carrier rocket, sent the Chang'e-5 lunar probe
into the space. When the return capsule touched down on Earth in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous
Region 24 days later, it brought back 1,731 grams of lunar samples, the first space materials China ever brought
back to Earth.
To prevent total loss of these precious samples in disasters, they were divided for storage in different locations,
and one of these locations is Shaoyang, Hunan Province in central China, the birthplace of Mao.
“This is a tribute to Mao; his wish has now become a reality," Wu Yanhua, deputy head of the China National
Space Administration (CNSA) , said at a press briefing on the completion of the mission held on December 17,
2020.
A statement from Chinese President Xi Jinping published in state media called the mission a complete success
and a step forward for the country's aerospace program. China becomes the third nation after the U. S. and the
former Soviet Union to manage the return of lunar samples.
The return of the capsule marked the successful conclusion of stage III of China's lunar exploration plan first
approved in 2004. Based on the achievements of the previous two stages, which focused on orbiting around and
landing on the Moon, respectively, the Chang'e-5 mission made major technological breakthroughs in the return to
Earth.
12. What can we learn about China's space exploration according to Paragraph 1?
A. The Long March 1 rocket was sent to the space in 1970.
B. China had made great progress in space exploration by the year 1965.
C. Mao Zedong wrote a poem to describe China's space exploration.
D. Jinggang Mountain in Jiangxi Province is the first space base established in China.
13. What do we know about the Chang'e-5 lunar probe?
A. It was sent into space atop the Long March 1 rocket.
B. It returned to Earth on November 24, 2020.
C. It returned with the first space materials China ever brought back to Earth.
D. The samples it brought back were stored in Shaoyang in honor of Mao Zedong.
14. According to the text, the Change-5 mission is highly thought of because .
A. it is a tribute to Mao Zedong
B. it's based on the achievement of the previous two stages
C. it made major technological breakthroughs in the return of lunar samples
D. it marked the success of China's first lunar exploration in space 15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Mao Zedong's Wish Has Come True B. Rise High to the Sky and Pick the Moon
C. Stages for Lunar Exploration of China D. China's Lunar Probe Returns with Moon Samples

With its thousands of rooms to its many beautiful artifacts, Beijing's Forbidden City is a place full of wonder.
16 Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty, it's estimated that the Forbidden City has survived more than 200
earthquakes. However, most structures aren't made to survive natural disasters, let alone ones built hundreds of
years ago. 17
A recent television documentary by UK broadcaster Channel 4 explored the skills of the ancient building's
designers. A group of Chinese carpenters and engineers were shown building a scale model of one of the Forbidden
City's palaces, at one fifth of the size. 18 It was subjected (经受住)to a simulated (模拟的)earthquake of 9.
5 on the Richter scale (里氏震级)---equal to 由 e largest ever recorded quake — and survived, instead of falling
apart, the model was just moved gently during the test.
According to experts, the answer to the Forbidden City's strength, as well as other ancient Chinese structures' ,
lies in dougong --- a centuries-old building method invented in China. 19 Despite being held together without any
nails or glue, the holders are perfect at keeping structures together when the weather gets rough. According to
Chinese National Geography, “Dougong design is an important earthquake-resistant feature of classical Chinese
structures. 20
The Forbidden City draws visitors because of its rich history and cultural significance, but perhaps it should
add one more thing to its list of attractions : earthquake shelter.
A. It reveals their advanced understanding of mathematics, architecture, materials, and structural science.
B. When under pressure, the framework changes in shape, much like the shock absorbers of a car.
C. It seems that the Forbidden City was built to resist anything.
D. Ancient Chinese craftsmen created structures that were both enduring and visually pleasing.
E. It is the name for a special holder on buildings.
F. But even more than 600 years after it was built, it's still managing to serve up surprises.
G. To show how strong ancient Chinese architecture really is, the model was put to the test.
