The best time to go to China is early autumn (October).
Most of China has warm temperatures, and the summer rains have stopped (apart from
around HongKong and Sanya) so it’s pretty dry. The autumnn colours are also amazing. It is
quiet at tourist attractions for most of the month, as the summer holiday travel crowds have

You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It's the idea that if children or even babies
listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet
search reveals plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age is, there are
CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart's music, but when it comes to scientific
evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase "the Mozart effect" was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two
years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest about the idea that
listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound
reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a
hope that if we listen to enough of it, we'll become more intelligent.
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in
1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be
set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music.
It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart's music on purpose, even an

Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help
them produce better milk.
I'll leave the debate on the impact on milk yield (产量) to farmers, but what about the
evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried
out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a
temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are
short-lived and it doesn't make us more intelligent.

The spread of Westem eating habits around the world is bad for human nealth and
the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.
David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America,
examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected
health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations
mdustriaHzed(工业化),population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt
what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began
to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for
non-infectious diseases like diabetes (糖尿病)and heart disease.
Unfortunately, when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they
are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia, China is
an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent
to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20,year period, And that
is happening all across the world, in Mexico in Nigeria and so on.
And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment As the world's
population grows, more forests and tropical (热带的)areas will become farmland for crops or
grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture
than that coming out of all froms of transportation right now.
Mr.Tillman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health,"a dilemma",
a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possibte setttemenf is leaving the behind.
8 . According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future
from .
A.transportation B.developing countries
C.agriculture D.developed countries
9.David Tilman believes that_ .
A.diet, the environment and human health are closely connected
B.the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes
C.people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease
D.traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet
10.We can infer from the passage that .
A.industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet
B.overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases
C.the examined information comes from developing countries
D.Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases
11.The main purpose of the passage is to .
A.call on us to protect the environment
B.warn us of the danger of the Western diet
C.remind us of the importance of health

D.advise us to have a balanced diet
D
It was a warm April evening. When I did some work in my garden, I suddenly felt a
blow to the right side of my neck. Totally confused, I reached up and, to my horror, realized
that I had been shot with an arrow. I screamed my husband’s name. He dropped his work and
ran to me. Ed grabbed me by the shoulders to stop me from running and told me to lie down
on the couch. Then he called 911. I lay there and prayed, wondering if there was any way I
could live.
The arrow had come from a young man practicing with a bow, used for hunting, in his
backyard. Luckily, he was using a practice arrow, which is smooth and rounded: a broadhead
arrow would have led to a different ending.
As the doctors entered the house and sat down beside me, they were perfectly calm and
totally focused. I was rushed to the hospital and shortly took a CT scan to determine the
location of the arrow inside. The doctors began telling me how lucky I was. The arrow had
gone past the carotid artery (颈动脉).
The morning after my two-hour surgery, the surgeon came in. He checked the wound
and talked to us about what he had done. Then he told us something that rocked our world
again.
He said that the CT scan had revealed that I had a brain tumor (肿瘤). I remember going
a bit frozen but thinking, God works in mysterious ways!
The surgeon said they were almost certain the tumor wasn’t fierce but it was located in a
very difficult place. I was terrified, of course, but I felt like it was God’s plan for me to find it.
A few days later, I went in for a second opinion from another surgeon. He said that it
was a difficult surgery but that it had to be done. The tumor was about to cross the midline of
my brain, which would have resulted in a massive stroke (中风).
The brain surgery was successful, and in less than a week I was back home. All was
going well for the years to come. Had it not been for that arrow, I would have died from a
brain tumor or a stroke! I wasn’t lucky, but I was blessed indeed.
12.How did the woman react directly she realized she was shot by something in the neck?
A.She cried out for her husband’s help.
B.She took it easy and lay down on the couch.
C.She made a prayer that she could live.

If you think grandparents like recalling the good old days, you’re in for a surprise.
According to a recent survey, most think nostalgia just isn’t what it used to be. 16. The
Internet, cheap foreign travel, cars, healthcare and television are among developments that
make life better today, although they do say PPI telemarketing calls, junk mails and bad
manners make them cross.
Richard Drew, from the estate agent Retirement move—which carried out the survey,
said, Grandparents don’t seem to want to turnback time.17. They also show the opinion
older people think everything used to be better isn’t true. Retirement may have come with a
little anxiety in the past. Nowadays, however, it’s rightfully something to look forward to. 18.
The study found nearly eight in ten Grandparents say the Internet has improved life
thanks to online shopping, offering new ways of communicating and online banking. It’s not
just shopping online that’s had a positive impact—shops are better now too.
19. A third of those polled say films are of a higher standard now. Slightly less than a
third think they are worse now. More than 50 per cent said TV has improved and just under
half prefer today’s radio.

Small business hold the key to employee happiness
As the calendar flips to another year, many employees will consider starting the new year
on the hunt for a new job.
In today's changing workforce, it is more important than even for companies to realize
that a salary alone is no longer enough to 21 or retain strong employees.
According to survey by Aflac, small businesses deserve a round of 22 for their
ability to keep employees happy. The report found that 85 percent of small-business
employees are happy in their current job, and more than half (51 percent) agree that most of
or all of their happiness in their current job is a(n) 23 of working for a small business.
Nearly a quarter of participants (23 percent) stated that the feeling of importance was the
best part of working for a small business.
Small businesses have the 24 ability to make employees feel appreciated,
respected and valued on a personal and 25 level.
In a small-business environment, there are 26 fewer layers between newcomers
and leadership. This tight-knit structure can create a(n) 27 atmosphere that allows
employees to feel that their opinions matter and that they play a significant role in the
business's mission.
28 is also vital in creating employee happiness. According to the report, 30

Things never seemed to go Lon’s way. If there was a bee about, he was stung.
And if his horse ran away, it would run straight through a thornbush. Still, even bad luck
might turn good if he could catch that goose for dinner.
He scanned the bushes, and found a nest with an egg. Just an egg, but even one egg
might make a small meal.
He picked it up, but dropped it in surprise. The egg was unusually heavy, and it gleamed
(发光) in the sunlight. It was made of gold!
Lon sighed. He’d nearly stepped on a goose that lays golden eggs. If he had captured the
goose, he would have had golden egg after golden egg.
Then a thought exploded in his mind.
Perhaps he could take the egg and get it to hatch, and the new goose would lay golden
eggs just as its mother did.
Lon smiled. His luck seemed to be changing.
Once home, Lon placed the egg into a bed of cotton next to the hearth. He turned it
every hour for several days.
One morning, he heard a faint chk-chk-chk. A small golden beak poked its way through
the shell.
It was an ugly little thing, but Lon didn’t care. All that mattered was the golden eggs it
would soon lay.
The gosling demanded food. Lon happily kept its beak filled. He named the bird Goly
and became fond of it, even though it was soon better fed than he was. Lon talked to his
goose and taught it to play checkers (国际跳棋).
Time passed as Lon waited for the first golden egg. Goldy had grown quite fat, but there
were no eggs. Lon finally took the goose to a farmer to see what the problem was.
The farmer took a closer look and laughed. “You’ll never get eggs from this goose. It’s a
boy goose!
I might as well roast you for dinner,” Lon said. “At least then I’ll get a meal for all my
work!”
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Alarmed,Goldy popped out of Lon’s arm and escaped into the forest.

选项“对电影的看法分歧很大”符合语境,故选 A。
20.根据上文“Although almost half said life is better now compared to when they were in their

读后续写
Alarmed, Goldy popped out of Lon’s arm and escaped into the forest. Alone in the house, Lon
paced restlessly, wondering whether he was destined for bad luck. There was a deathly stillness in
the house. Without Goldy accompanying him and begging him for food, a strong sense of loss
overwhelmed him. It was no fun playing checkers alone, even if he did win every game. Picturing
the merry scene of playing checkers with Goldy, he felt the regret burning his heart. If only he
hadn’t scared Goldy away!
One morning, Lon awoke to Goldy’s familiar honking outside. At the sight of Goldy, Lon
was seized with a mixture of joy and relief. Seeing Goldy pecking and quacking around the lawn,
Lon knew immediately Goldy was starving. As usual, Lon took some oatmeal out to serve his
good old friend. Lon happily settled down and enjoyed a game of checkers with Goldy. To Lon,
having a companion was the luckiest thing in life now.
