It went on to become one of the most influential sociology papers of all time. Until then scholars had assumed that an individual’s well-being depended mainly on the quality of relationships with close friends and family. Granovetter showed that quantity matters, too. He categories a person’s social world as “strong ties” and “weak ties”. His central insight was that for new messages and ideas, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. As Granovetter pointed out, the people whom we often talk to swim in the same pool of information as we do. We depend on acquaintances whom we see infrequently to bring us news of opportunities. This was the idea behind the Pixar building, the design of which was made by Steve Jobs. The building has a large central hall through which all employees have to pass several times a day. Jobs wanted colleagues to run into each other, grab coffee and have a chat. He believed in the power of these seemingly random conversations to fire up creativity. Encounters with weak ties can be good for our mental wellbeing, too. Gillian Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex, investigated the extent to which people get happiness from weak-tie relationships. She found that on days when a participant had a greater number of casual interactions with weak ties – say, a neighbour, a member of yoga class – they experienced more happiness and a greater sense of belonging. For all these reasons, we should continue to try and find ways to cultivate weak-tie relationships. Sandstrom adds that we can also engage in more weak-tie-style interactions with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know you are thinking of them without asking for a great deal of time, energy or attention. 4.Why does Granovetter think weak ties are more important? A.They are smaller in number. B.They form same circle of friends. C.They are sources of new information . D.They are related to close friends and family. 5.Which of the following can be categorized as weak ties? A.Neighbors. B.Best friends. C.Parents. D.Husband or wife. 6.What is the function of the central hall in Pixar building? A.It helps staff build friendship. B.It allows staff to have a break. C.It encourages staff to meet and chat. D.It helps Jobs communicate with staff. 7.What does Sandstrom want to convey in the last paragraph? A.We can develop weak ties into strong ties. B.We should spend more time with strong ties. C.We should balance weak ties with strong ties. D.We can apply casual interactions to strong ties. 根据第一段第六句内容“His central insight was that for new messages and ideas, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. (他的核心观点是,对于新的信息和思想, 弱关系比强关系对我们更重要。)”以及第一段最后一句内容“We depend on acquaintances whom we see infrequently to bring us news of opportunities.(我们依靠不常见面的熟人给我们 带来机遇的消息。)” 根据第三段最后一句内容“She found that on days when a participant had a greater number of casual interactions with weak ties – say, a neighbour, a member of yoga class – they experienced more happiness and a greater sense of belonging. (当参与者与弱关系比如邻居、 瑜伽班的成员有更多的随意互动时,他们会体验到更多的快乐和更强的归属感)”可知,邻 居属于弱关系。故选 A 项。 6. 根据第二段第三句内容“The building has a large central hall through which all employees have to pass several times a day. Jobs wanted colleagues to run into each other, grab coffee and have a chat. (大楼有一个很大的中央大厅,所有员工每天都要经过几次。乔布斯希 望同事们能偶遇, 喝杯咖啡,聊聊天)”可知,中央大厅的功能就是供人们相见、喝咖啡和 聊天。故选 C 项。 7.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段内容“For all these reasons, we should continue to try and find ways to cultivate weak-tie relationships. Sandstrom adds that we can also engage in more weak-tie-style interactions with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know you are thinking of them without asking for a great deal of time, energy or attention.(基于这些原因,我们应该继 续努力寻找培养弱关系的方法。Sandstrom 补充道,我们也可以利用我们的强联系参与更多 弱联系类型的互动。这样做的目的是让别人知道你在想他们,而不需要太多的时间、精力或 注意力。)”可知,Sandstrom 认为应该努力寻找培养弱关系的方法,利用强联系参与更多弱 联系类型的互动。故选 D 项。 C The smart clothes industry is targeting specific health conditions. Diabetic (糖尿病的) foot is a major health issue today. The loss of mobility and independence that some with diabetes face, as well as health care—associated costs, is alarming. Now, Siren Care, a medical device company, has developed an injury—monitoring sock that could help people with diabetes prevent loss of feet. Early discovery is critical in this process. Since skin inflammation (炎症) is accompanied by a rise in temperature, studies show that home monitoring of foot skin temperature could make a big difference. What is so special about Siren's product is that the sensors are incorporated into the fabric of the socks. The sensor is connected to a PCB battery. whose lifetime is two months if used daily. The socks are only on when users wear them; they go into sleep mode when off. All data from the socks is sent to the Siren app, so the user can monitor the condition of his or her feet in real—time. The application gives foot health scores and, when necessary, reminds the user to adjust activity and/or see a health care professional. Ran Ma, the company's CEO, says. “Equipped with the novel technology, users can adjust their activity by self—monitoring their skin temperature. But the sock is not a device for illness diagnosis. The user still needs to see a doctor, who can then say exactly what the illness is or the cause of the problem.” The socks are machine washable and don't need to be charged. Every six months, the user gets a new box with seven pairs of socks to replace the used ones. For customers, the cost is $ 30 per month. This might signal that this technology is becoming more accessible when compared to the price of similar smart clothing. Siren presented their product at this year's CES event in Las Vegas and announced that they were planning to start shipping their socks this summer. And the company is already planning future applications that will go beyond diabetes care. 8.What's the main function of the socks? A.Protecting foot skin. B.Improving patients' mobility. C.Monitoring skin temperature. D.Speeding the recovery of injuries. 9.When will the socks start to work? A.When they are worn. B.When users do activities. C.When users use the Siren app. D.When they are connected to the battery. 10.What does the underlined word “diagnosis" in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Treatment. B.Prevention. C.Identification. D.Research, 11.What can we learn about Siren from the last paragraph? A.It charges $ 30 for each pair of socks. B.It has developed other smart clothing. C.It has started the trend of smart clothing. D.It provides users with new socks periodically. 【答案】CACD 【分析】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了智能服装领域的新发明——智能袜子,它能够监测 皮肤的温度来预警糖尿病足。 8.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Now, Siren Care, a medical device company, has developed an injury—monitoring sock that could help people with diabetes prevent loss of feet. Since skin inflammation (炎症) is accompanied by a rise in temperature, studies show that home monitoring of foot skin temperature could make a big difference.(现在,一家名为 Siren Care 的医疗设备公 司已经开发出了一种可以帮助糖尿病患者预防足部损伤的袜子。由于皮肤炎症伴随着温度的 升高,研究表明,在家监测足部皮肤温度可能会产生很大的不同。)”可知袜子的功能是监测 皮肤温度。故选 C 项。 9.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The socks are only on when users wear them; they go into sleep mode when off. (这种袜子只有在使用者穿的时候才会打开;关机后会进入睡眠模式。)”可知袜 子在被穿上时开始工作,故选 A 项。 10.词义猜测题。根据该词后一句“The user still needs to see a doctor, who can then say exactly what the illness is or the cause of the problem.(用户仍然需要医生来明确是什么疾病或者病因 是什么。)” 可知,智能袜子并不能做这些事,由此可推知这些事就是“诊断,确认”疾病。所以 diagnosis 意为“诊断,确认”,故选 C 项。 11.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Every six months, the user gets a new box with seven pairs of socks to replace the used ones.(每六个月,用户就会得到一个新盒子,里面有 7 双袜子来替换 用过的袜子。)”可知 Siren 定期为用户提供新袜子。故选 D 项。 D Since 1998, when NASA kicked off the biggest search for near-Earth asteroids (小行星), scientists have detected more than 25,000 of them. 2020 turned out to be a record year for discoveries. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting many of the surveys, astronomers recorded 2,958 previously unknown near-Earth asteroids over the year. A large number came from the Catalina Sky Survey, which uses three telescopes in Arizona to hunt for threatening space rocks. Operations closed briefly last spring because of the pandemic. A wildfire in June caused a longer closure, yet the Catalina survey still discovered 1,548 near-Earth objects. These included a rare ‘mini-moon’ named 2020 CD3, a tiny asteroid less than 3 metres in diameter (直径) that had been temporarily captured by Earth’s gravity. The mini-moon broke away from Earth’s pull last April. Other discoveries last year, 1,152 came from the Pan-STARRS survey telescopes in Hawaii. The finds included an object named 2020 SO, which turned out to be not an asteroid, but a leftover rocket booster that had been circling around in space since it helped to launch a NASA mission to the Moon in 1966. Some of the asteroids discovered last year came close to Earth. At least 107 of them passed the planet at a distance less than that of the Moon. Last year’s narrow escapes included the tiny asteroid 2020 QG, which skimmed just 2,950 kilometres above the Indian Ocean in August. That made it the closest known approach, a record broken just three months later by another small object, 2020 VT4. That one passed less than 400 kilometres from the planet, and wasn’t spotted until 15 hours after it had zipped by. Had it hit, it would probably have broken apart in Earth’s atmosphere. All of these discoveries are making astronomers more conscious of the ball objects of the Solar System, where plenty of asteroids spin around in the space near Earth. 12.How many near-Earth asteroids might have flown past Earth in 2020? A.More than 2,958. B.1,152. C.More than 25,000. D.1,548. 13.What is 2020 SO in the fourth paragraph? A.It’s an asteroid. B.It’s space junk. C.It’s a mini-moon. D.It’s a NASA mission. 14.What may the discoveries of asteroids bring about? A.Launching a new rocket. B.Setting up a new space station. C.Destroying the near-Earth asteroids. D.Raising concern about the space. 15.What is the passage mainly about? A.The discovery was suspended due to the wildfire in June. B.The scientists of NASA began the biggest search for asteroids. C.The discoveries of the near-Earth asteroids hit a record high. D.The astronomers renamed 2,958 newly-found near-Earth asteroids. 【答案】ABDC 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了近地小行星的发现情况。尽管受到新冠肺炎疫情的 影响,天文学家还是发现了超过 2958 个小行星。大部分小行星是通过卡特林那巡天系统和 泛星系统发现的。同时,天文学家也发现了部分小行星距离地球很近。所有这些发现都让天 文学家对太阳系的球状物体有了更多的认识。 12.细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting many of the surveys, astronomers recorded 2,958 previously unknown near-Earth asteroids over the year.” (尽管 COVID-19 大流行中断了许多调查,但是天文学家在这一年中记录了 2958 颗以前未 知的近地小行星。)可知,2020 年被发现的近地小行星个数超过 2958,因此 2020 年飞过地 球的近地小行星数量也是超过 2958 个的。故选 A 项。 13.细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“The finds included an object named 2020 SO, which turned out to be not an asteroid, but a leftover rocket booster that had been circling around in space since it helped to launch a NASA mission to the Moon in 1966.”(这些发现中包括一个被命名为 2020 SO 的物体,它后来被证明不是一颗小行星,而是一枚残存的火箭助推器,自从它在 1966 年帮助美国宇航局完成登月任务以后就一直在太空中盘旋。)可知,2020 SO 是太空垃圾。 故选 B 项。 14.推理判断题。根据最后一段“All of these discoveries are making astronomers more conscious of the ball objects of the Solar System, where plenty of asteroids spin around in the space near Earth. ”(所有这些发现都让天文学家对太阳系的球状物体有了更多的认识,那里有大量的 小行星在地球附近的太空中旋转。)可知,地球附近的太空中很多小行星。根据倒数第二段 可知一些小行星距离地球很近,如果小行星被击中,它可能会在地球大气层中解体。由此推 知,小行星的发现会引起人们对太空的关注。故选 D 项。 15.主旨大意题。根据文章的主要内容,尤其第一段最后两句“2020 turned out to be a record year for discoveries. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting many of the surveys, astronomers recorded 2,958 previously unknown near-Earth asteroids over the year.”(2020 年是 新发现最多的一年。尽管 COVID-19 大流行中断了许多调查,但是天文学家在一年中记录了 2958 颗以前未知的近地小行星。)可知,本文主要介绍了近地小行星的发现创历史新高,2958 颗近地小行星是被发现了。故选 C 项。 第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2. 5 分, 满分 12. 5 分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 Competition is a common phenomenon in our social life. 16. There is constant competition for academic degrees, jobs, customers, money and so forth. In a sense, competition is one of the motive forces to the development of society. 17. Therefore, the only way to survive is to be competitive. Growing in a competitive environment is important for a child because future adult life is difficult. Finding a good job, for example, is an extremely competitive activity. Today, most people obtain knowledge through various ways and a large number of people get good education. 18.The quality of people is rapidly increasing. Competition is more violent than what we thought it should be. The potentially successful job applicant has to be prepared in stronger position by gaining more qualifications and experience. In the sports contests, the strongest will come out as winners. In the business world, to beat your competitors, you must be better than the other employees. 19. Though the only way our world rewards people is to give honor to the winners, not to the losers, by attempting to compete at different activities, we can still learn to win and lose, gain experience and know our strengths and weaknesses. Competition prepares us for the tough things in life. Whether in games, in study or in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the degree, the trophy, and the contract. 20. A.Otherwise, you will be defeated. B.Modern society demands high-quality talents. C.Learning to be competitive is clearly the best preparation for life. D.There are also many people who have higher degrees in their special fields. E.Children have to learn to be competitive in order to adapt to modern society. F.In the natural world, the weak will be replaced by the strong and the fittest can live. G.We compete when we play games and when we try to do better than others in our study. 【答案】GFDAC 【分析】这是一篇议论文,作者围绕“竞争”这一中心词,作者论述了竞争在现实生活中、在 各个领域的普遍性,竞争是人们在社会中生活的一种方式,最后阐述了“学会竞争是为人生 做的最好的准备”这一观点。 16.此题考查学生对语篇上下文的理解能力。上一句说竞争是我们社会生活中常见的现象, “Competition is a common phenomenon in our social life.”为一句总起句,下一句提到存在竞争 的其他方面,“There is constant competition for academic degrees, jobs, customers, money and so forth. ”因此,此空应该起承上启下的作用。既会谈到竞争,也会涉及到竞争的具体某些方面, G 项则讲当我们在玩游戏和学习要比别人做得更好时就会竞争,这些都是竞争的具体表现 (具体某些方面),符合题意,故选 G。 17.此题考查上下句之间因果关系。根据下一句和本段所举例子可知,正因为 F 中所述,“In the natural world, the weak will be replaced by the strong and the fittest can live.”在自然界中,弱 肉强食,物竞天择,适者生存,“Therefore, the only way to survive is to be competitive. 19.此空与前一句是条件关系,“In the business world, to beat your competitors, you must be better than the other employees.”意思是,在一个商业社会中,要打败你的竞争对手,你就必 须比其他员工更强,“Otherwise, you will be defeated.”否则你就会被打败,otherwise(否则) 在此处起到提示作用,表示满足不了前一句的条件,就会出现“被打败”的情况,故选 A。 20.此空设在文章末尾,是总结句,起首尾呼应的作用。既是对本文的总结,又与文章开头 第一段呼应,本题侧重语篇和文章结构关系的考查。文章开头“Competition is a common phenomenon in our social life.”竞争是我们社会生活中普遍的现象,同时,该空上一句讲 “Whether in games, in study or in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the degree, the trophy, and the contract.”无论在哪个领域,我们的目的都是“赢”,赢得一切;因此,“Learning to be competitive is clearly the best preparation for life.”(所以学会竞争显然是为人生做最好的 准备),呼应文章开头并总结全文、点题,故选 C。 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题:每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Three years ago,I participated in Model United Nations(MUN)held by the Education Department, which was a mock(模拟的)UN activity. During the two days, students are separated in different groups which 21 different countries to debate and try to solve problems. MUN has 22 awards:best delegates(代表),honorary mentions, and verbal mentions. Each time I participate in MUN,I made good 23 and undoubtedly got a few awards. But I often felt as if I’d 24 because I had never won the best delegate award. I 25 those who didn’t deserve to win the award but won it various times, and I was just filled with 26 at their success. But later I realized that it was also 27 not to get the award because I could actually 28 something, and that I shouldn’t 29 the best delegate award until I was the best delegate I could be. Failures are completely subjective—we can look at a result as a failure or a 30 . Any failure can be regarded as a(n) 31 because you can always learn something from it and do 32 next time. This is supported by John Locke’s theory that we are born with blank views:knowledge and ability are learned from our 33 . That’s true. With Marlen close behind, tiny Alyson flashed into the backyard of an elderly neighbor. About halfway across the yard, Alyson suddenly disappeared, seemingly swallowed whole by a barely visible opening in the ground. Marlen screamed. The neighbor’s caretaker, Luz, 26, was preparing dinner in the neighbor’s kitchen and assumed the shrieks were the sounds of children playing. But she ran outside anyway and found Marlen sobbing and Alyson’s sister Damary, 25, kneeing on the grass, dialing 911. “Alyson fell in the hole!” Damary cried to Luz. Luz gave a quick glance down the hole in disbelief and saw only darkness. Then she heard Alyson’s wails(哭泣) from deep underground. “Hang on there, sweety. We’ll get you out soon.” Luz ran inside the house and down to the basement for a ladder, which happened to be not very long. She then settled for a gray extension cord(延长线) to use as a rope with which to rappel(用绳索下降) into the hole. Back in the yard, she and Damary used their hands to dig at the hole, widening the opening from 7 inches in diameter to about 20 inches.Marlen sat on the grass, too distracted to help. At the thought that Alyson might get hurt and was too young to grasp and climb the rope on her own, Luz made up her mind to go down herself. When the police detective Aaron arrived a few minutes later, Luz was already in the hole up to her waist. “Get out of here,” the officer told Luz, lifting her up by the arm. “It’s dangerous for you.” “It’s more dangerous for the Baby,” she argued, “She’s going to die.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The detective begged Luz to wait for help, but she determined. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________ Minutes later, the Fire Department and Rescue Squad arrived. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________ 【答案】Paragraph 1 The detective begged Luz to wait for help, but she was determined. On touching the ground, she discovered Alyson was submerged by water up to her neck. Calming the soaked and shivering child, she quickly picked her up in her arms. However, with only one rope, it was impossible for Luz alone to push the little girl out. They had to wait for help, yet a sense of fear began to creep over her since it was cold and dark down here. Paragraph 2 Minutes later, the Fire Department and Rescue Squad arrived. With the confirmation of the two's safety, they lowered a ladder into the hole. Luz then managed to climb out and handed Alyson over. Emergency workers rushed the stunned toddler to an ambulance, surveying to check the damage, only to find her miraculously uninjured, without even a scratch, though a bit scared and covered with dirt. The whole family expressed their heartfelt gratitude for Luz's help. Eventually, Luz's heroic deed went viral in the neighborhood.
