In my world, from my home in suburban Michigan,I can find cool, clean, refreshing
water to drink wherever I want it.At my high schoo1.At the gym.At my grandmother’s
house.Anywhere.I take it for granted.
But my view of the world was rocked when I saw a video about why people run.Their
motivation was to help children in Kenya without having access to clean water.I could not
believe what I saw, like photos of children walking miles to get water, instead of going to
schoo1.
What I did believe was that I should do something to help. The opportunity to do so was
right in front of me.Someone was organizing people to run the Chicago Marathon. Each runner
had to raise more than$1,000 in the race. All the money will go to building toilets, drilling
3
wells — whatever it takes to keep pollutants out of the water in cities and small villages in
Africa, and to give people life.I believe that water is life.
I signed up! At 16,I just made the minimum age criteria for running the marathon.I knew
I could — and should — raise money to address the environmental problems that disturb the
children of developing countries.I had never run more than 7 miles, but I knew that running
26.2 miles would not compare to the pain and suffering those children go through on a daily
basis.
It amazes me how much my life has changed . I am grateful to be part of a church
community that not only made me aware of the environmental problems Kenya faces but
helped me realize how I can make a difference if I put my mind and feet to it.
Since finishing the marathon — my first! — I have started a running group called Sole
Sisters helping protect the environment.
4.What did the author think before she saw the video?
A.It was natural to have clean water.
B.It was strange for children to skip schoo1.
C.It was unbelievable to sign up for a marathon.
D.It was alarming that Kenyans were short of water.
5.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Aggressive and helpful.
B.Determined and caring.
C.Ambitious and intelligent.
D.Generous and adventurous.
6.What will be written about after this passage?
A.What Sole Sisters does.
B.Her charity work in Kenya.
C.Why she started the running group.
D.Her preparations for next marathon.
7.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A girl competed in the Chicago Marathon.
B.Drinking water in Kenya is polluted.
C.A girl runs for better environment.
D.A teenager makes a difference to the world.

Getting a cold is stressful. It makes you feel rubbish and prevents you from doing the
things you want to do.It also creates something of a moral dilemma when it comes to whether
or not you should head into work.So to help you decide, let’s take a look at some of the
factors.
Will you be productive? If not , then you ’ d better have one day off and then work
properly, instead of having a whole week of work only getting half your tasks completed.
Are you infectious(传染的)?If so,the most serious damage you can do to your workplace
is that some colleagues can get infected, thus dramatically affecting the productivity of the
whole workforce.
Another reason for taking time off work is that it might even cause possible
complications.Even if you can work in your current condition,it does not necessarily mean
that you should.Ignoring your symptoms could result in you catching new diseases, which will
get things worse.Listen to your body and take its warnings seriously!
Maybe there’s an important meeting tomorrow,or you’re trying to impress the new boss,
or because you have a huge to—do list.Or you’re probably thinking that this case should be
the exception to the rule and that now just isn’t a good time to take off work. You’re probably
always feeling as though you have a huge mountain of work to do.
In fact it's a good chance that this pressure is actually what caused you to get ill in the first
place. If you can’t take a single day off work for the sake of your health, then there’s probably
something wrong with your work/life balance. This would be a good time to start changing
that.
8.What will happen if your virus is infectious?
A.You will be very likely to be laid off.
B.It is impossible for you to recover.
C.A great many workmates will fall i11.
D.The whole group’s productivity will be reduced.
9.What does the underlined part“possible complications”in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Low spirits. B.Possibilities of death.
C.Other potential illnesses. D.Slight physical discomforts.
5
10.What is implied in paragraph 5?
A.It is forbidden to ask for sick leave in a new company.
B.People tend to ignore their health for various reasons.
C.Companies are to blame for employees’health problems.
D.A new boss is very important in the running of a company.
11.What does the writer intend to show at the end of the passage?
A.It is wise to weigh work and health well.
B.Good health results from light workload.
C.It is reasonable to ask for paid sick leave.
D.The illness is completely caused by stress from work.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was badly damaged in the fire.It was heartbreaking and it
sounded the alarm for the protection of cultural relics(遗迹)at the same time.It would have
been better to have three—dimensional scans before.
3D scanning technology can be used to scan both inside and outside of an important
cultural relic to get accurate 3D data and then a 3D printer is used to copy a smaller version,
which will be very useful for the repair work.
In order to obtain accurate data about cultural relics, the experts use high—tech three—
dimensional laser(激光)scanner and other means to describe the shape of the original cultural
relics very accurately. Then, the model is printed out by a 3D printer. Finally, the copied
cultural relics are processed, including surface color, decoration processing and so on.
Three-dimensional printing technology has a very apparent advantage. It can adjust the
size of prints according to the need, and can easily obtain one-third and one-half of the size of
original cultural relics. This is difficult or even impossible to do in traditional reproduction.
At present, all parts of China are accelerating the digital protection of cultural relics and
recording ancient cultural relics with modern science and technology . For example , the
Yungang Grottoes(石窟)Research Institute, together with the digital team of the Institute of
Cultural Heritage of Zhejiang University, has restored the third grotto of Yungang Grottoes at a
ratio(比例)of 1:1 for two years.
Throughout the process of restoration of 3D printed cultural relics , the probability of
secondary damage caused by human touch is low,and the artistic value of cultural relics can be
rebuilt to the maximum degree. The world can appreciate the beauty of classical cultural relics
more deeply.
6
12.Why is Notre Dame Cathedral mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To raise people’s awareness of safety.
B.To remind people of the famous building.
C.To serve as an introduction to the topic.
D.To appeal for preservation of cultural relics.
13.What is the obvious advantage of 3D technology compared with traditional reproduction?
A.It can save a lot of professionals.
B.It can help resize the reproductions of the cultural relics.
C.It can reproduce cultural relics as what they were.
D.It can change the shapes of the original cultural relics.
14.What can be known about using 3D technology in reproducing cultural relics from the last
paragraph?
A.No further damage is done while repairing.
B.Their artistic value is regained as much as possible.
C.The digital models will replace the original cultural relics.
D.Handwork in reproducing cultural relics will disappear soon.
15.What can be a suitable title of the text?
A.3D Printing in China
B.Protection of Cultural Relics
C.Developments of 3D Technology
D.3D Technology in Cultural Relics Restoration

For the last 27 years, the Bowersox family has spent their holidays with Santa. It was not
the one from the North Pole but a wooden cutout(雕刻)of him purchased by Jeff and Jeanne
Bowersox at a holiday sale when they first moved to New Castle,Delaware. The couple adored
it.
“Since 1993,Santa has been in our yard,”Jeanne said.“and our grandkids just loved to
come and see Santa.”
With two red, golf ball-sized dots for his cheeks and a red nose,he is the happiest Santa
around. For years, the cutout brought joy to their entire neighborhood. But no one enjoyed it
more than the Bowersox family, especially in times of sadness.
“He’s always the first decoration that’s put out.”Jeanne said.“And my husband had
the idea to put our address on the back of it.”
When the family lost Jeff for cancer in 2014,the handwriting on the back of Santa became
one of many memorable things tied to the family patriarch(族长).Every year, the Bowersox
family placed the Santa out by the giant tree in front of their home just like their father did.
10
Since his father’s death, their son Ken took over decorating duties. This year was no
different.Ken put all the decorations out in front of the house on Thanksgiving Day.But the
family got a heartbreaking surprise the next morning. In the middle of the night, someone had
stolen Santa.
Christmas was one of Jeff’s favorite times of the year.He would often get down on the
floor wit h Jeanne to help with hand—made gifts.Their daughter Gray remembered how her
father used to dress up as Santa when the grandkids were young. The face of holiday cheer was
always present.Once the grandchildren got old enough to recognize that it was grandpa under
the mask,a neighbor took over the Santa duties. But the spirit of Christmas was still strong
within Jeff.
“I do truly miss Jeff.”Jeanne said.“We had a very great marriage.”

she thought of an idea.Gray turned to Facebook.“We are hoping whoever took it may find it in
their heart to return it.”her Facebook post said.Over 400 people shared it during the first
night.Four days later,a neighbor knocked on Jeanne’s door, who had found it thrown on some
grass in the neighborhood. She had also seen the post on Facebook and the handwritten address
on the back.Wild with joy,Jeanne quickly called up ail the kids to tell them that Santa had
returned, and well in time for the holiday.
12
