The nine woman of Bella Mondo win over yet another audience. The group is one of just a
handful of all-women ensembles (乐队) in Ivory Coast.
It all started in 2007, Prisca Allou was a music student. A music producer came to see her.
He said he wanted to make an all-female ensemble to keep a promise to his late mother.
Allou got on board and was charged with recruiting (招募) other members. “It wasn’t easy
at first. Some parents were against it. You know, in Africa, the place of women is often seen as
being either in an office or at home. That was the fixed image.” Allou spread the word and took
out ads in local papers. Most of the girls she found were not professional players. “I just played
some tamtam. I learned to play drums when I joined Bella Mondo.” The girls spent the next
four years learning to play their instruments. Many gave up along the way, but eight of them
soldiered on with Allou, and Bella Mondo was founded.
The band plays original songs and covers. Their music spans a wide range of styles: funk,
reggae, pop music. They released their first album in 2013... and have performed in Paris,
Dakar, Cotonou and, of course, here at home in Abidjan.
You can see them nearly every Thursday at this bar, the same place that gave the band its
start years ago. “Oh yes, I was surprised at first. A woman singing, you see that every day, but
an entire band, playing all the instruments and everything? It was extraordinary. I was
dumbstruck. Bella Mondo is a great band.” The women are now working on their second
album.
24. Why did the music producer want to found a female ensemble?
A. To sponsor music students. B. To comfort his mother.
C. To carry out his promise. D. To win over an audience.
25. Which of the following made it hard for Allou to recruit band members?
A. Most women couldn’t afford. B. Parents didn’t want to break tradition.
C. All parents disapproved of it. D. Women weren’t willing to leave home.
26. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about?
A. The band has travelled a lot. B. The band has gained its popularity.
C. The band has released albums. D. The band seems to be united as one.
27. What does the underlined word “dumbstruck” probably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Satisfied. B. Determined.
C. Amused. D. Astonished.

If all goes well, a balloon will soon rise from Esrange Space Center in Kiruna, Sweden. It
will float high into the upper atmosphere and then return to Earth. However, environmentalists
have arrived to stop this from happening.
The campaigners are against the balloon because of what occurs in flight. The balloon will
shoot dust into the Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing more sunlight to reflect back into space.
The dust, known as Stratospheric Aerosol Injection(SAI) (平流层气溶胶注入), is part of a
solar geoengineering ( 地 球 工 程 ) program named SCoPex which is being conducted by
Harvard University. The aim of the program is to purposely change the Earth’s atmosphere to
fight climate change.
Those who oppose worry about two things. Firstly, the moral risk — if solar
geoengineering works, talks on reducing greenhouse gases will be challenged. The second
concern is the amount of SAI in the atmosphere. To keep temperatures low, the need of the
reflective dust to be released high above Earth will be endless, and a sudden stop could result in
rapid warming. Raymond Pierrehumbert, a physicist at Oxford University, says solar
geoengineering is even too risky to research beyond computer models.
Not all environmentalists are opposed to it. Since the world is unlikely to achieve the 1. 5
℃ global warming target set in the Paris Agreement, some green organizations favour
small-sized geoengineering research.
Regardless of the criticism, the research continues. Geoengineering is increasingly gaining
international attention. A recent report about climate change suggested that SAI could help
keep warming below 1. 5℃. The National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in
the USA has developed a research plan for solar geoengineering and received governmental
funding totaling $9 million. Both China and India have also launched research programs of
their own. Activists may oppose the experiments, but balloons will likely fly anyway.
28. What is the function of SAI?
A. To attract dust. B. To throw sunlight back.
C. To absorb heat. D. To fight against pollution.
29. Why does Raymond Pierrehumbert say geoengineering is risky?
A. It may change computer models. B. It may worsen global warming.
C. It may release greenhouse gases. D. It may produce much more dust.
30. How do some people expect geoengineering research to be done?
A. To a limited degree. B. At a lower temperature.
C. By green organizations. D. Without international attention.
31. Which of the following can be inferred?
A. More support is going to geoengineering.
B. Voices of environmentalists are neglected.
C. Global warming is getting worse in Sweden.
D. Geoengineering has proved effective in India.
D
West Nile is a tropical disease that begins in birds, which pass it on to mosquitoes that
then go on to infect human beings with bites. Most people who contract West Nile do not
experience any symptoms at all, but, if they do, symptoms typically develop between 3 to 14
days after a mosquito bite. About 1 in 5 persons suffers fever, headaches, and body aches,
usually lasting a week or so. A far less lucky I in 150 experiences high fever, tremors, paralysis,
and coma. Some—especially the elderly and those with weak immune systems—die.
That is what made the major outbreaks of West Nile in the U. S. in the summer of 2012 so
scary. The situation was particularly bad in Dallas, Texas, where the West Nile virus killed 10
people and sickened more than 200. The city declared a state of emergency and began aerial
spraying of a pesticide to kill the mosquitoes, even though residents argued that the pesticide
could be more dangerous than the disease.
Why was the summer of 2012 so hospitable to the West Nile virus and the mosquitoes that
carry it? Blame the weather. An extremely mild winter allowed more mosquitoes than usual to
survive, while the unusually high temperatures in that scorching summer further increased their
number by speeding up their life cycle. The economic crisis may have also played a role:
homeowners who were not able to pay their bank loans were forced to abandon their properties,
sometimes leaving behind pools that made excellent mosquito breeding grounds.
The severity of tropical diseases is also a matter of whether governments are
capable—and willing—to defend their populations against infections. Dallas County was not
doing some of the key things to slow the spread of West Nile, such as testing dead birds and
setting mosquito traps to test for the presence of the disease. Tropical infections are thus as
much related to government inaction as they are to climate.
32. What made people in Dallas feel so scared in the summer of 2012?
A. Birds related to dangerous viruses. B. Frightening new-born mosquitos.
C. The severity of a tropical disease. D. Obvious symptoms of everyone.
33. Which of the following statements is true about West Nile?
A. Its symptoms usually appear within two weeks.
B. It is spread through air and water in tropical areas.
C. An extremely mild winter is sure to cause the virus.
D. Bank loans excellently breed numerous mosquitos.
34. What is the author's attitude towards Dallas county during the outbreak of West Nile?
A. Supportive. B. Critical.
C. Indifferent. D. Neutral.
35. What might be the suitable title of the text?
A. An undefeatable pest. B. A terrible disease.
C. An inactive government. D. Causes of a disease.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
Do you always concern yourself with your kid’s play dates? Do you send them upstairs to
get changed? 36 Put that red pen back in your purse, because micromanaging
your kids is likely to do more harm than good.
Micromanaging or over-parenting comes in many forms. However it presents itself, it can
give children the impression that parents don’t have confidence in them, and this can lead to
problems. Kids who are micromanaged could also grow used to an unearned level of success,
which may do harm to their attitude towards work and life. Parents who micromanage their
kids sometimes struggle with a sense of control. 37
So what should parents do? For modern parents, it can be a balance between healthy
involvement in your kid's life and micromanaging. It can be especially difficult to know where
the line is when it comes to the internet. We live in a digital age. 38 To help
you walk that fine line, parents should be frank about it. If they're hiding their phone or acting
secretively, a slightly different conversation about the health of their online activity might be
needed.
Breaking a micromanaging habit isn't easy. 39 You could relax your grip
in fairly inconsequential areas, like letting your child decide what clothes to wear. The plus side
is that if you back off about little things, your words might carry more weight when it comes to
the big things. 40 Therefore, you can let your children succeed, fail, and figure
out life on their own.
A. But like any bad habit, start small.
B. Do you start small talks with your kids?
C. Micromanaging can be a sign of anxiety in them.
D. Do you stay with them while they're doing homework?
E. You can also form a healthier relationship with your kids.
F. Keep your eyes open for the changes in your kids' behavior.
G. It's important for parents to care about their kids' activity online.

The Benefits of Learning by Involvement
There is nothing like the pressure of the classroom to make you feel nervous and even
hold you back.
Learning by doing, by participating, is very effective. In fact, it 56 (believe) that
our athletic skills and language learning skills are located in 57 same area of the brain
and indeed, this is how children learn. Living with a family makes the language familiar,
literally 58 (bring) it home to you.
To really appreciate and understand another language, you need 59 (understand) its
culture and philosophy. The only way to do that is to put yourself in it. It will be an adventure,
60 there, undoubtedly, will be some unexpected elements. But it will 61 (certain)
be memorable and you’ll have plenty of tales to tell on your return.
Your everyday life is lived in that language, 62 it is peeling the potatoes or
feeding the cat! The exchange is natural and meaningful. It’s a big difference from the grammar
and structure in classroom 63 (textbook). Every single interaction or conversation,
from buying a bus ticket 64 making new friends will be in this language. You give
yourself no 65 (choose) but to learn it and every reason to learn it well!

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“What a crabby-looking lady ( 怨 妇 ) ,” the cashier at my local convenience store
whispered to her coworker. I was grabbing something off the shelf. I had a half dozen kids
waiting for me outside in the van, and here's the thing: they were all my own children. No time
for polite. No casual conversation with the checkout lady, no nod of approval toward the stock
boy, no breathing. Just get the toilet paper, two gallons of milk and some Frosted Flakes and get
back to my children!
But my interest was aroused by the crabby-looking lady. Which one was she? Taking a
family pack of toilet paper under my arm, I scanned the tiny store for the crabby lady. Let's see,
there's a middle-aged guy checking on pork, an older gentleman at the checkout purchasing an
egg salad sandwich and a coffee, and... just then I saw her, the crabby-looking lady.
Her eyes were small; her brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail so tight that it looked
like her forehead would drop. Her mouth was shut serious. This lady looked like she had
smelled something really bad. Then, I turned away from my own reflection in the convex
security mirror(安全反射镜)at the back of the store. The crabby-looking lady... was me!
That night, I cried. I was the crabby-looking lady! Me! The girl once voted nicest smile by
her high school class! Things must get changed! Right then and there I resolved to do one thing
over the next year. One simple resolution: to smile. I didn't need to wait for January 1st--I
would start right now.
I resolved to smile at anyone and anything, even though they would let me down. And I
also resolved to make a conscious effort to smile, at least ten times a day.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the first day of “Mission Smile” I practiced smiling as planned.
A month later, something different happened.

第一节 (满分 15 分)
Dear Jim,
Knowing that you are conducting a survey of the housework that high school students do
at home, I’m writing to inform you about what I do.
Although my school schedule is rather tight, I still manage to help with the housework
from time to time. Not only do I clean up after dinner, but I also deal with other things like
sweeping and dusting. (6 分)
I hold the opinion that high school students should do some housework. For one thing, it
is by doing housework that we learn to shoulder responsibility. For another, I find the time
spent doing housework with my parents really fun and rewarding. (7 分)
I hope what I mentioned above will be of great use to your survey.(2 分)

第二节 (满分 25 分)
The first day of “Mission Smile” I practiced smiling as planned. I smiled at a strange dog
who peed on my daughter’s new school shoes while she was in them, the salesman to the
door, three of my six children, a librarian who asked me if I was aware of the global
overpopulation problem, and my bathtub. I even smiled at my husband over the phone when
he called to say he’d be late from work. And I smiled at myself in the mirror twice, just to
remind myself what a smile looked like.
After practicing a month, unexpectedly, something different happened. I didn't even try to
find things to smile at and I'd still notice smile take over my face. When my daughter loaded
the dishwasher with her socks, I smiled. When we were really late for church, I smiled. One
day I was meeting a couple of friends at a local coffee shop. I overheard the cashier remark to
her co-worker, “What a happy-looking lady!" And I didn't even have to look around to know
who she was talking about. It was me!
