B 20. We thank everyone who is interested in establishing a student association at the university. There are some important things, including changes to the rules and fees. Firstly, you all know that anybody could start a club or association previously. However, starting from this year, you must have successfully completed at least one year of studies and have not been a student for more than 4 years. The reason is that we want all our students to focus on their studies, and not get disturbed by outside activities. However, joining student clubs is a great way to learn career skills like organization and leadership. Secondly, the university administration will no longer provide every new organization with $1500. Instead, the starting capital will be $10 per new member, up to $2000. It doesn't matter if you have more than 200 members in your new club. These are the major changes, and we are confident that they will improve student life and help ambitious young students be active on campus. Personally, I have a long history at the University of Tuscaloosa, first as a student now as a professor. Throughout the time, I have been always involved in clubs and associations here, both for students and staff. So, I understand their value. If you have any further questions, please take a look at the brochure or meet me at my office tonight at 6 p.m., where I will be answering questions personally. A The London Eye remains temporarily closed but in line with the Government's roadmap out of lockdown we plan to reopen from 17th May.You can pre-book now. One day, a woman from The Daily News called and said she wanted to do an article on me. When she had finished interviewing me for the article, she asked, “What are you planning to do next?” Well, at the time, there was absolutely nothing I was planning on doing next, so I asked her what she meant, pausing for a moment. She told me she was interested in me! So I thought I’d better tell her something. What came out was, “I’m thinking about breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for Fastest-Talking Female.” The newspaper article came out the next day, and the writer had included my parting remarks about trying to break the world’s Fastest-Talking Female record. At about 5: 00 p.m. that afternoon I got a call from Larry King Live, which I had never heard of, asking me to go on the show. They wanted me to try to break the record, and they told me they would pick me up at 8: 00---because they wanted me to do it that night! Then I sat down to figure out what on earth I was going to do on the show. I called Guinness to find out how to break a fast-talking record. They told me I would have to recite something either Shakespeare or the Bible. Shakespeare and I had never really gotten along, so 1 figured the Bible was my only hope. I began practicing and practicing, over and over again. I was both nervous and excited at the same time. Then I decided just to give it my best shot, and I did. I broke the record, becoming the World’s Fastest-talking Female by speaking 585 words in one minute in front of a national television audience. I broke it again two years later, with 603 words in a minute. My career took off. People often ask me how I did that. I tell them I live my life by this simple philosophy: I always say yes first; then I ask, “Now, what do I have to do to accomplish that?” Then I ask myself, “What is the worst thing that can happen if I don’t succeed? The answer is, I simply don’t succeed! And what’s the best thing that can happen? I succeed! What more can life ask of you? Be yourself, and have a good time! 24. They wanted me to try to break the record, and they told me they would pick me up at 8: 00---because they wanted me to do it that night! (那天下午 5 点左右,我接到了《拉里·金 实况广播》节目的电话,邀请我去上他的节目,我从没听说过这个节目。他们想让我试着打破纪录,还告 诉我他们会在 8 点来接我——因为他们想让我那天晚上去!)”可知,那篇报纸文章发表后,作者被说服去 打破一项吉尼斯纪录,建立一个新的纪录。故选 A 项。 根据第四段中“I broke the record, becoming the World’s Fastest-talking Female by speaking 585 words in one minute in front of a national television audience. He made it clear that the labor market remained far from healed, that the pandemic's economic outcome has largely hurt women and minorities since the winter of 2020, and that both Congress and the central bank have a role to play in supporting working-class families until the economy has recovered more fully. As Mr. Powell implied, adult women in the United States hold jobs or look for them at lower rates than women in some other major advanced economies, such as Canada or Germany. Research has suggested that the change may be linked to child care policies. In a 2018 paper that asked why the share of Canadians who work or look for jobs had climbed even as United States labor force attachment had fallen, researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco pointed out that most of the gap owed to different outcomes for women. And they pointed to caregiving policy differences as a likely reason. “Parental leave policies in Canada provide strong motivation to remain attached to the labor force following the arrival of a new child," the paper, written by the San Francisco Fed president,Mary C. Daly, and co-authors,pointed out.“The contrast between the motivations Canada and the United States offer prime-age workers to remain attached to the labor force is clear.” The fact that child care responsibilities fall heavily on women in the United States has come under a brighter spotlight during the pandemic, which has shuttered schools and disproportionately left women bearing added child care responsibilities during the traditional workday. 28. What can we learn from the second paragraph? A. The rate of American female employment was the highest five decades ago. B. Women in the USA are fed up with labor work. C. The USA has lost its leading status in female labor force participation. D. Advanced Western countries have lower rate of employment compared with that of the USA. 29. According to the passage, who most need financial support after being affected by COVID-19 in the US? A. The black females and children. B. The working-class Americans. C. The high-income groups. D. The businessmen and politicians. 30. As for the different employment rate among advanced economies, what may be the main cause? A. Different social status. B. The economic income. C. The child care policy. D. Government economic policy. 31. How can we describe the situation of American women during the pandemic? A. American women live under great pressure. B. American women live a carefree life. C. American women are hardworking and optimistic. D. American women are unemployed and pressured. 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. A 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。由于新冠病毒的传播,美国妇女承受着更大的压力,失去了在劳动参与力上 的全球领先地位。政府改进的儿童保育支持政策,会有助于吸引更多女性进入劳动力市场。 【28 题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“We used to lead the world in female labor force participation, a quarter-century ago, and we no longer do.”(25 年前,我们曾经在女性劳动力参与方面领先世界,现在我们不再是这样了。)可知, 美国失去了在女性劳动力参与率方面的全球领先地位。故选 C 项。 【29 题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段“ He made it clear that the labor market remained far from healed, that the pandemic's economic outcome has largely hurt women and minorities since the winter of 2020, and that both Congress and the central bank have a role to play in supporting working-class families until the economy has recovered more fully.” (他明确表示,劳动力市场仍远未愈合,自 2020 年冬天,流行病的经济结果已经很大程度上损害了女性和 少数民族,国会和央行都有责任在经济充分复苏之前支持工人阶级家庭。)可知,最需要财政支持的是工人 阶级。故选 B 项。 【30 题详解】 推理判断题。文章第四段第一句“Research has suggested that the change may be linked to child care policies.”(研 究表明,这一变化可能与儿童保育政策有关。)是承上启下的过渡句,说明美国女性劳动力参与率较低的原 因与儿童保育政策有关,结合下文对其他发达国家的描述,说明发达经济体之间女性劳动力的差异主要原 因是儿童保育政策。故选 C 项。 【31 题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段“The fact that child care responsibilities fall heavily on women in the United States has come under a brighter spotlight during the pandemic, which has shuttered schools and disproportionately left women bearing added child care responsibilities during the traditional workday.(在大流行期间,美国妇女承担 着照顾孩子的重任,这一事实受到了越来越多的关注。流行病导致学校停课,妇女在传统工作日承担了更 多照顾孩子的责任。)”可推断,在流行病期间,美国妇女承担巨大压力。故选 A 项。 D Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs possess the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers In Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs(Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory)to play a simple joystick(操纵杆)game with their noses, moving a cursor(光标)to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t demonstrate the skills to win a round any time soon, they did show an understanding of some elementary games. Performing well above chance, the pigs appeared to recognize the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers. “It is no small achievement for an animal, to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an effect elsewhere. That pigs can do this to any degree should give us pause as to what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may impact them,” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Croney, the study’s lead author. Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in, “only oral encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue. These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also demonstrated how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands. “As with any sentient(有感觉力的)beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them impacts and matters to them,” Croney said. “We therefore have a moral duty to understand how pigs acquire information, and what they are capable of leaning and remembering, because it ultimately offers the potential for how they understand their interactions with us and their environments.” 32. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2? A. Pigs have the potential to play games well. B. Pigs have noses as flexible as human hands. C. Pigs possess the mental ability we didn’t know. D. Pigs know well about what they are playing. 33. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Playing joystick games so well. B. Realizing the effects of their acts. C. Carrying out tasks with their noses. D. Following human oral commands. 34. Which of the following can improve the performance of trained pigs? A. Less challenging video games. B. A nice treat before the experiment. C. Severe punishment if necessary. D. Inspiring words from experimenters. 35. What does the author think of the research findings? A. They reflect the needs to interact more with animals. B. They offer humans ideas of how to live with animals. C. They encourage us to explore how pigs interact with us. D. They show us how pigs interact with their environments. 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇科研类文章,一项新表明猪可以通过自己的鼻子来使用操纵杆完成一些游戏,并且能够 意识到光标是跟随自己移动操纵杆而移动,此类的研究是一个巨大的突破,让我们更有可能了解猪是如何 与我们和环境互动的。 【32 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段第一句“Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs possess the mental capability to play video games.”(是时候玩一些流行的游戏了:新的研究表明猪拥有玩电子游戏的心智 能力。)和第二段最后一句 The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.(研究人员称,尽管它们的手指不够灵活,但它们的表现却非常好,这一事实“非 同寻常”。)可知,猪有玩游戏的潜力。故选 A。 【33 题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段第一句“It is no small achievement for an animal, to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an effect elsewhere.”(对于一种动物来说,能够理解自己的行为在其他地方产生 影响这一概念是一个不小的成就。)可知,this 是指“认识到他们行为的影响”。故选 B。 【34 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段最后一句 In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in, “only oral encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue.(事实上, 当游戏变得更具挑战性,猪变得不愿意参与时,“只有实验员口头鼓励”才能看到训练继续进行。)可知,来 自实验者的鼓舞的话语能改善被训练的猪的表现。故选 D。 【35 题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“We therefore have a moral duty to understand how pigs acquire information, and what they are capable of leaning and remembering, because it ultimately offers the potential for how they understand their interactions with us and their environments.”(因此,我们有道德责任去了解猪是如何获取信息 的,以及它们能够学习和记忆什么,因为这最终提供了它们如何理解与我们以及它们的环境的互动的潜力。) 可知,作者认为这些研究发现鼓励我们探索猪是如何与我们互动的。故选 C。 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75, who continue to work and stay socially engaged. ____36____. B 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇议论文。本文从日本老龄化社会出发,论述了悠得人群体日渐成为社会生产力和消费力 的现象。 【36 题详解】 下一句“The yold are more numerous, healthier and wealthier than previous generations of seniors.(与上一代老 年人相比,悠得人的数量更多,更健康,也更富有)”说明悠得人比上一代老年人的数量更多,更健康,也 更富有,因此,G 项“The yold, in their new appearance as the young old, are expected to change the world(悠得 人,以他们年轻老人的新面貌,有望改变这个世界)”符合语境,选项中的“new appearance”是关键词,与 下文构成顺承关系,故选 G 项。 【37 题详解】 下一句“Of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy(预期寿命)in rich countries between 2000 and 2015, says the WHO, 3.2 years were enjoyed in good health.(世卫组织称,2000 至 2015 年间,富裕国家的预期寿命延长了 3.7 年,其中有 3.2 年是在良好的健康状态下度过的)”提到世界卫生组织的调查结论,随着人们预期寿命的 增长,健康的年限也在增长,且下文的“Working is one of the factors that are helping people stay healthy longer. ”说明工作有益健康,可推知,首句必然和健康有关,因此,D 项“Health worsens with age, but the yold are resisting the decline better than most.(健康状况随着年龄的增长而恶化,但悠得人比大多数人更能抵抗这种 衰退)”符合语境,与最后一句“The yold are also better off, while the wealth of all other age groups declined.(悠 得人群的境况也更富有,而其他所有年龄组的财富都在下降。)”呼应,介绍悠得人群的优点。故选 D 项。 【38 题详解】 上文“The yold are not just any group of old people They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as who are wearing indoor shoes and look after the grandchildren. (悠得人并非仅是一波寻常的老人。他们正在 挑战人们对退了休的人穿着拖鞋、照看孙儿这种惯有的预期)”以及下文“So they are vital to the Tourism industry. They are also changing education and finance… 【39 题详解】 下 文 “They find that older workers have, if anything, slightly above-average productivity and that teams of workers from multiple generations are the most productive of all(他们发现,若要说有什么区别的话,老年员工 的生产率略高于平均水平;而由来自不同代际的员工组成的团队生产率最高)”谈到,年长的工人的效率会 更高,因此,E 项“Many bosses think productivity falls with age, but studies in Germany suggest otherwise.(许多 老板和人力资源部门认为生产率会随年龄增长而下降,但是德国的研究表明并非如此)”符合语境,反驳一 些人所认为的工作效率随年龄增长而倒退的观点。故选 E 项。 【40 题详解】 上 文 “The most important is public attitudes towards older people and in particular the expectation that 60-somethings ought to quietly retire into the background(最重要的是公众对老年人的态度,尤其是对 60 多岁 的人应该悄悄退居幕后的期望)”以及下文“The yold will demand that companies become more age-friendly and, in the process, help change attitudes towards aging itself.( 悠得人将要求公司变得更“高龄友善”,并在这 一过程中帮助改变人们对于“变老”这件事本身的态度)”提到,一些人认为 60 岁以上的员工应该迎接退休, 下文又谈到了悠得人的诉求,希望公司变得更“高龄友善”,可推知,B 项“Many companies discriminate against older workers by offering training only to younger ones(许多公司歧视年长的工人,只给年轻人提供培 训)”符合题意,符合上下文反对年龄歧视的语境。故选 B 项。 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳 选项。 What are the foods that you can only taste in memories? Disappointed at her son's reaction, Granny then went to Ali's mother and Ali's sister, but like Ali's father, nobody believed her.
