As cities around the world try to be smart, some have become stupid instead.
So, what is a “stupid city”? It is a city that gives in to urban sprawl( 扩 张 ), with people moving from
central areas to less-crowded communities, said Mr. Nicholas You, a director of the Guangzhou Institute for
Urban Innovation in China. Such communities are heavily reliant on cars.
Another problem Mr. You stressed is that public administration bodies in “stupid cities’’ tend to work
alone, refusing to share data that could help develop solutions to urban problems. He made the point during a
discussion on urban transformation in Asia, saying, “A real smart city is one that looks at everything as a
whole—you can’t look at water issues without looking at energy.”
A South Korean member, Mr. Jong Sung Hwang, suggested that some of the biggest barriers to creating a
smart city are cultural. South Korean society is less forgiving of mistakes, noted Mr. Jong. For example, some
in Seoul tried to push for an intelligent traffic system but were met with resistance from the police. He said,
“We have ideas, data and even money, but we could not make it happen.”
India, however, is not adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to create smart cities for its 1.3 billion people,
said a member from India.
In Singapore, which launched its Smart Nation initiative( 行 动 ) in 2014, the authorities fear that
technology can worsen the divide between the haves and the have-nots, said Dr. Limin Hee, director for
research at the Centre for Liveable Cities here. “Thankfully, many cities are considering such issues as how to
make better use of data and technology to create smart cities,” she added.
24. What can we learn about a smart city?
英语试题 第 5页(共 10页) 英语试题 第 6页(共 10页)
A. It encourages urban expansion. B. It has few people in its central areas.
C. It solves urban problems by sharing data. D. It treats every issue as a separate unit.
25. Why is it impossible to push an intelligent traffic system in Seoul?
A. People are tolerant of mistakes. B. The police are afraid of making mistakes.
C. The government is lacking enough money. D. The traffic system in Seoul is very advanced.
26. What problem might India face when creating smart cities?
A. Its population is decreasing. B. It has no examples to follow.
C. It fails to adopt a universally right system. D. It lacks advanced technologies.
27. What do Singaporean authorities worry about the technology?
A. The disapproval of the public. B. More money spent than expected.

What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future?
What if we could jump and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we
pleased?
The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction
writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math,
trying to make the dream of time travel come true.
Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing called “spacetime.” He said there are three
dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth
dimension.
Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is
relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist.
The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat
spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we
are on Earth or in space.
Stephen Hawking believes that a time machine will never be built. If it were possible, he thinks we
would already know. If a time machine could be built, how come no one from the future has invaded us?
The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell,
which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the
idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers
backward and forward.
Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? Most important is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of
wonder.
28. What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To show time and space are connected. B. To show people’s interest in time travel.
C. To draw readers’ attention to time travel. D. To make people believe time travel is possible.
29. Which of the following statements could Einstein agree with?
A. Time travel is possible in the future. B. People can’t move faster than light.
C. Time travel is against scientific rules. D. Spacetime is not a real thing in theory.
30. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?
A. The first science fiction story. B. Different works about time travel.
C. Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer. D. Some tools used in time travel.
31. What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel?
A. Negative. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Hopeful.
D
A robot with a sense of touch may one day feel “pain”, both its own physical pain and sympathy for the
pain of its human companions. Such touchy-feely robots are still far off, but advances in robotic touch-sensing
are bringing that possibility closer to reality.
Sensors set in soft, artificial skin that can detect both a gentle touch and a painful strike have been
hooked up to a robot that can then signal emotions, Asada reported February 15 at the annual meeting of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science. This artificial “pain nervous system”, as Asada calls it,
may be a small building block for a machine that could ultimately experience pain.
Asada, an engineer at Osaka University, and his colleagues have designed touch sensors that reliably pick
up a range of touches. In a robot system named Affetto, a realistic-looking child’s head, these touch and pain
signals can be converted to emotional facial expressions.
A touch-sensitive, soft material, as opposed to a rigid metal surface, allows richer interactions between a
machine and the world, says neuroscientist Kingson Man of the University of Southern California. Artificial
skin “allows the possibility of engagement in truly intelligent ways”.
Such a system, Asada says, might ultimately lead to robots that can recognize the pain of others, a
valuable skill for robots designed to help care for people in need, the elderly, for instance.
But there is an important distinction between a robot that responds in a predictable way to a painful strike
and a robot that’s able to compute an internal feeling accurately, says Damasio, a neuroscientist also at the
University of Southern California. A robot with sensors that can detect touch and pain is “like having a robot,
for example, that smiles when you talk to it,” Damasio says. “It’s a device for communication of the machine
to a human.” While that’s an interesting development, “it’s not the same thing as a robot designed to compute
some sort of internal experience,” he says.
32. What do we know about the “pain nervous system”?
A. It is named Affetto by scientists. B. It is a set of complicated sensors.
C. It combines sensors and artificial skin. D. It is able to signal different emotions.
33. What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Delivered. B. Translated. C. Attached. D. Adapted.
34. What does Damasio consider as an interesting development?
A. Robots can put up with pain. B. Robots can talk to human beings.
C. Robots can compute internal feelings D. Robots can detect pains and respond accordingly.
35. What can be the best title of the text?
A. Robots Inch to Feeling Pain B. Machines Become Emotional
C. Human Feelings Can Be Copied D. Artificial Skins Gain Intelligence

We all know about the health benefits of swimming. It offers a great workout for the body, builds muscle
strength and is good for the heart. If you don’t mind getting wet, it can be fun too. 36 Well, many
people are enjoying it, based on evidence that it can actually be good for us.
Cold-water swimming—sometimes called wild swimming—involves swimming in natural areas
including ponds, rivers and the sea. Jumping in cold water gives a short sharp shock to the body, but many
participants say they get used to it. 37 As well as being good exercise, spending time outdoors and by
water improves your psychological well-being.
38 One man who suffered constant pain after surgery claimed he was cured by swimming in cold
open water. And another swimmer claimed “Being in cold salt water, it feels like you’re at one with nature. It
just feels amazing.”
But what is it that people are gaining from this chilly experience? Doctors say getting into cold water
causes stress response. 39 Some experts believe cold-water swimming helps “cross-adaptation”,
where one form of stress prepares the body for another. For example, it also helps reduce the stress of
exercising at high altitude.
So, if you’re convinced that this is for you, take advice: approach it with caution, swim with a friend.
40
A. Do you know other benefits of swimming?
B. The more you do it, your reaction to stress is reduced.
C. It can have much bigger benefits than that for your body.
D. But who would enjoy swimming in water that is ice cold?
E. Start in the summer, when the water temperatures are higher!
F. In our modern life, sometimes we have to live with all kinds of stress.
G. Evidence suggests cold-water swimming has cured certain health conditions.

When I was trying hard to explain Thanksgiving Day to my in-laws in China, I could see their eyes filled
with 56 (confuse) and sense the questions forming in their minds. So I attempted 57 (translate)
the holiday through things they were familiar with. I described the roast turkey as something similar 58
Beijing duck. I compared the annual Thanksgiving show to the 59 (year) Spring Festival Gala (联欢会)
on Chinese New Year’s Eve. And I characterized 60 entire celebration as an American version of Winter
solstice ( 冬 至 ) in China. Yet as much as my in-laws nodded and smiled, I recognized that even these
explanations were a poor substitute. No words could fully describe the Thanksgiving celebrations I 61 (know)

Many years ago, Art, who loved rural life, bought a house in the countryside and lived there peacefully
with his wife, Eva. Eva was an animal lover, and she kept several chickens, two cats and one dog in their
backyard. Art liked exploring in mountains and forests. He was enthusiastic and warm-hearted. Every time he
drove out, no matter who he encountered, he would greet them.
One day Art saw a young man about 16 years of age and a large dog with one ear white and the other
black walking along the road. When his car would pass him on the other side, Art made eye contact and
waved. The young man smiled and waved back. After that, Art saw him almost daily, walking along the
winding road waving at cars, and he knew the boy was named Jim. Art used to enjoy walking out in the
countryside himself, so he thought it wasn’t too odd.
On a rainy day, Art saw Jim again and pulled over. He asked if he needed a ride. The young man said,
“I’m not really going anywhere, just walking with my dog. He likes rainy days. Thanks all the same, mister.”
“Your dog is special. My wife also has a dog, and it is pregnant,” Art said. Then he told him if he ever needed
a ride or help, he could flag him down and he would do whatever he could. Jim thanked Art and went on his
way.
A few weeks later, Art saw Jim walking and he didn’t have his usual smile and was pacing rather thanwalking.
As Art got close, he could see Jim was crying. Art asked what was wrong. “I was called that
Art checked the dog, and he found the dog had been dead.

Dear Kevin,
I am awfully sorry to tell you that I can’t go to your 18th birthday party this Saturday.
Knowing it is a big day for you, I intended to attend the party. However, my uncle, whom we haven’t met for 10
years, will come to visit us this Saturday afternoon. I need to pick him up at the airport because my parents are not
available then. By the way, I have sent you a best-selling novel as a birthday gift, which I hope will be good for your
Chinese learning.
Wish you all the best!

(第二节)
Art checked the dog, and he found the dog had been dead. Art told Jim his dog was gone, but that he could keep
his dog in his heart. The boy cried his eyes out. Art helped Jim to take Randy to his house, buried him and made a
marker. Then Art left, feeling very blue. In the following days, he didn’t meet Jim on the road. He knew the boy was
extremely sad but didn’t know how to comfort him. After about a month, Eva’s dog gave birth to several baby dogs.
One of the baby dogs caught Art’s attention, who had a white ear and a black one. The little dog reminded Art of
the image of Randy immediately. Then Art explained the whole situation to his wife. Eva said it was not a coincidence
but a sign. After discussion, Art took the dog to Jim’s house. “I bring you a little Randy,” Art said to him when Jim
opened the door. The little dog was half awake, growling with soft voice. No amount of surprise and happiness could
compare to his look upon seeing the cute pup. “Oh, really! Randy! You have come back to me!” Jim said with tears of
joy.

Text 1
M: I wasn’t able to finish our class project last night. W: What happened?
M: My roommate burned her hand while she was cooking last night, and I had to take her to the emergency room.
We were there all night.
Text 2
W: Robert, which do you think you need more of, luck, talent, or effort to succeed in the arts?
英语试题 第 9页(共 10页) 英语试题 第 10页(共 10页)
M: I think a lot depends on luck. You need the opportunity to succeed and not everyone gets the right opportunity
even if they’re really talented and hard-working.
Text 3
W: This city is so boring at night. Nothing ever happens. I wish we had some fun clubs to go to.
M: Yeah, me, too. But on the other hand, I love that there’s almost no crime. You can walk anywhere, even at
night.
Text 4
M: I’ve got an ink stain on my new shirt. Should I just put some water on it?
W: Let me look it up on the internet. Here it is: For ink, use plain soap. It will lift the stain right out. M: That
doesn’t sound right to me. I will take it to the drycleaner.
Text 5
W: Oh, some exciting news! My sister Jenny’s getting married! M: Really? When?
W: Next month. She’s marrying a guy she met when she was studying in Canada, and we’re all going to Toronto
for the wedding. It’ll be a fun trip.
Text 6
M: We’ve finally taken off!
W: I’m so pleased. I recently started a new job and the long distances I need to travel for it just make flying a
better option than the train or the car.
M: I know what you mean. I do this same journey every month when I visit my parents. They live a long way
from the capital. I get nervous about flying, but it’s just so much easier than any other forms of transport.
W: Well, I can never get comfortable in the seat. I like watching movies though to pass the time.
Text 7
W: I’d like to know which plays are suitable for my children, and which ones my husband and I might go to. M:
How old are your children?
W: Five and seven.
M: What about The Mystery of Muldoon? That’s aimed at five- to ten-year-olds. If you’d like something for
yourself and your husband, you might like to see Fire and Flood—it’s about events that happened in Stretton two
hundred years ago, and children might find it rather frightening.
W: Oh, thanks for the warning. And finally what about Silly Sailor?
M: That’s a comedy, and it’s for young and old. In fact, it won an award in the Stretton Drama Festival two
months ago.
Text 8
M: Hi Julie. I was wondering if you could do me a favor. It’s my wife’s birthday this Thursday and I have no idea
what to get her.
W: Oh! I can try to help. What’s she like?
M: She’s an architect. She’s also a big art fan and she loves modern art.
W: Does she have any hobbies?
M: She loves cooking. She likes cooking for friends and family.
W: Why don’t you get her one of those experience day gifts? She could spend a whole day with a chef and learn
some new recipes.
M: Sounds great.

and take a cookery course there. I’m sure John from Marketing can help you with that—he used to live there.
M: OK, thanks! I’ll text him later.

W: Hi David, thanks for coming back in to see us.
M: It’s my pleasure! It’s great to be back for the next round.
W: We love a positive attitude here. I’m Sabrina, the Head of Department. I wondered if you might be able to tell
me a bit about the sort of work you’re doing in your current role. You’ve been at E-Net for 6 years?
M: Yep, so I’ll just talk you through it from the beginning… so, I started working there fresh out of college, as a
copywriter. I wrote articles and marketing content for their website ... After four years I was promoted to editor, so I
was looking over the content of the other writers, making sure the quality was good, the tone was right, you know?
Then the following year I was promoted again, now I’m the Content Manager for online presence.
W: Thanks for talking us through that ... so, you’ve been at E-Net for quite a while, why is it that you want to
leave now?
M: Well, to be honest, I’ve been working there for a while, and I’ve really enjoyed it, but I just feel like I’ve
learned as much as I can there, and I want to keep developing my skills ...

I’ll start with our six-day Isle of Man holiday. This is a fascinating island in the Irish Sea. Our holiday starts in
Heysham, where your tour manager will meet you, then you’ll travel by ferry to the Isle of Man. Some people prefer
to fly from Luton instead, and another popular option is to go by train to Liverpool and take a ferry from there.
On Day 1 you’ll arrive in time for a short introduction by your tour manager, followed by dinner in the hotel. On
Day 2 you’ll take the coach to the small town of Peel, on the way calling in at the Tynwald Exhibition. Day 3 we have
a trip to the mountain Snaefell. You will board an electric train which takes you to the fishing village of Laxey. Lunch
will be in the cafe, giving you fantastic views of the island.
Day 4 is free for you to explore, using the pass which we’ll give you. So you won’t have to pay for travel on local
transport. Or you might just want to take it easy in Douglas and perhaps do a little light shopping.
The last full day, Day 5 will begin with a ride on the steam railway. After some time to explore, a coach will take
you to a small island just off the coast. And on Day 6 it’s back to the ferry—or the airport, if you flew to the island—
and time to go home.
