Curtis Whitson knew the water fall was coming. He'd rafted down the Arroyo Seco, a river in central
California, before. But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually manageable falls
into something fierce. And this year, instead of his friends, Whitson's companions were his wife, Krystal Ramirez,
and his 13-year-old son, Hunter. As the three of them approached the falls late in the afternoon of the third day of
their camping trip, Whitson could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrow canyon that they were in
serious trouble. There was no way they’d be able to rappel down(绕绳下降) the rocks as planned.
“The water was just gushing through there with tremendous force,” recalls Whitson.
They could wade to the shore, but would anyone find them there? They had no mobile phone service, and they
hadn’t seen a single person in the past three days.
As he considered what to do, Whitson hit on a bit of luck-he heard voices coming from the other side of the
falls. He yelled, but the sound of the rushing water drowned him out.
We have to get these people a message, Whitson thought.
Then he spotted his green Nalgene water bottle. Whitson grabbed it and carved “Help!” on it. Ramirez also
reminded him that he had a pen and paper, which she'd brought to play games with, in his backpack. Whitson knew
it was a long shot. But he scrawled “We are stuck here at the waterfall. Get help please!” and pushed the note into
the bottle, throwing it over the waterfall perfectly.
“All right, that’s all we can do,” Whitson told Hunter.
It took 30 minutes to navigate back upstream to the beach where they made a fire. With no reasonable
expectation that their message in a bottle would find its way to anyone, they spelled out SOS in white rocks. As
the evening wore on, they placed a headlamp with a flashing light on a ledge Then, just after
midnight, they heard a helicopter hovering above them. Whitson ran over to the headlamp and started flashing it at
the helicopter. He, Ramirez, and Hunter were waving and hollering when they heard the magic words: “This is
Search and Rescue. You have been found.”
It was a moment of pure happiness as the three chatted with the officers who had rescued them. Together, they
marveled at the unlikelihood of it all. Two men had seen the water bottle in the water. When they picked it up, they
noticed the writing on it - “Help!”.
A few days after news of the rescue broke, one of the hikers contacted Whitson.
That’s when he learned the story. There were actually two little girls hiking with the men that day. It was the
girls who first spotted the bottle and swam to get it. Whitson is planning on having a big barbecue to meet the
hikers-and thank them.
4. Which was NOT the trouble the Whitsons faced?
A. The water falls were fierce.
B. There was no mobile phone service.
C. All of them were not experienced in rafting.
D. They had to rappel down the rocks.
5. Which is the order that the Whitsons helped themselves out?

③ Whitson yelled to the other side of the falls.

One of the fundamental things we really love in cities is order. Order means balance, symmetry (对称)and
repetition: the same thing happening again and again, and the left side matching the right side.
Order is one of the reasons why so many people love Paris. But most cities are a complete mess. When it's a
mess, it seems like no one is in charge. And that's worrying. It's horrible when everything is jumbled up: a pitched
roof next to a flat roof; 3 simple bare box next to a messy car park; high-rise towers that look as if they've been
placed at random, like teeth in a yawning mouth.
We generally have a desire to straighten things out. And when we can't, it's frustrating. The same urge is there
when we look at cities. Often, it's not skyscrapers that we mind in the city. It's skyscrapers that have been planted
there without planning, like they are increasingly appearing in London, while New York or Chicago shows the
ordered way that we love.
However, you have to keep something else in mind. Unreasonable order can be just as much of a problem. Too
much regularity can be soul-destroying. Too much order feels rigid and alien. It can be indifferent, cold, severe,
unkind, or even cruel. So the ideal we're seeking is variety and order.
This is the idea in a square in Tele in the Czech Republic, where every house is the same width and height. But
within that ordered partem, every house has been allowed freedom at the level of form and color. We're perfectly in
the middle between chaos and boringness here. And that's what humans adore.
So as a general rule: too much mess, and it's off-putting; but too much simple order, and it’s boring.
8. What does the underlined phrase "jumbled up” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Out of order. B. Causing worries
C. In good order. D. At random.
9. Which of the following cities docs the author dislike?
A. New York. B. London. C. Paris. D. Tele.
10. What's the author's opinion about skyscrapers?
A. They should be made lower.
B. They should have plants on top.
C. They should be well planned.
D. Their numbers should be limited.
11. According to the author, an ideal city features .
A. balance and repetition B. free forms and rich colors
C. the same height and width D. both order and variety

New Character from Sesame Street
As a means of offering comfort to kids from every walk of life, Sesame Street is introducing a new character
who lives in a foster(寄养的)home.
Karli, the foster kid, and her "for — now" parents, Dalia and Clem, are all being shown in a series of Sesame
Street videos, storybooks, and interactive activities to offer support to children, foster parents, and foster care
providers.
Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind the show, says they are starting their
movements as part of their Sesame Street in Community program. It provides free, easy-to-use resources for
community providers and caregivers on a range of topics, including tough issues like family homelessness and
traumatic experiences, to help them support children as they explore the world of foster care, and they provide
simple, approachable tools to help children feel safer.
The number of children in foster care in the US has grown for five continuous years. In response to the
growing need for resources to serve children in foster care, Sesame Workshop partnered with national experts on
foster care. The resources include proven strategies to improve relationships between caring adults and children and
reduce the effects of traumatic experiences.
" Fostering a child takes patience, adaptability, and sacrifice, and we know that caring adults hold the power to
reduce the effects of traumatic experiences on young children," says Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Senior Vice President
of US Social Impact at Sesame Workshop. " We want foster parents and providers to hear that what they do is vital,
as they have difficulty building and rebuilding family structures and children's sense of safety."
12. How does Sesame Street differ with new roles added?
A. It extends the significance of care projects.
B. It promotes the entertainment of the program.

和第八段“they spelled out SOS
in white rocks.(他们用白色的石头拼出求救信号。)”

根据第三段第二句的“It provides free,easy-to-use resources for community
providers and caregivers on a range of topics,…(它为社区服务提供者和看护者提供免费的、易于使用的资源,

relationships between caring adults and children and reduce the effects of traumatic experiences.

根据全文、第四段和最后一段最后一句的“We want foster parents and providers
