Long before there wasn’t any Washington or any United States, while there were
trader Indians on the shores of the river that flows by the place where the present
Washington D. C. stands. These Indians paddled canoes(划独木舟) up and down the
river and traded with other Indians, swapping things they had for things they
wanted—beads for furs, bows for arrows, corn for potatoes. In the Indian language the
name for traders was Potomac, so now we call the river the Potomac River after these
trader Indians. The Potomac separates two states—Maryland and Virginia. They are
named after two English queens—Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I who never
married and was called the Virgin Queen. The Potomac Indians paddled their canoes
down the river until they came to a much broader body of water. This body of water
was so big that it seemed to them like the ocean, and they called it “the Mother of
Waters”, which in their own language was “Chesapeake”. Though Chesapeake Bay is
not the ocean, it is the biggest bay in the United States.

The desire to make explorations is born with man. Wherever his imagination goes,
man also has a strong wish to go. A large part of human history is connected with the
exploration of the world in which we live. Again and again people have set out with
surprising courage and patience to look into unknown regions and lands to see what
had not yet been seen, to make known the un-known. With kites, balloons and aircraft
they left the ground to pass through the lower atmosphere. Now the outer space
receives their attention.
Why should man take the trouble of conquering(征服) space? It is hard to list
the specific practical benefits that will result in. But one knows, from past experience
in other areas, that man will surely see and discover new things in space that will
increase our scientific knowledge, and this new knowledge will find its way into
valuable practical uses. What we learn about man himself, from his experience in
space, and from the effects of space and the space flight environment on him, will be
extremely valuable. The new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of
space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find practical uses in everyday
life in some way. The areas that will benefit are manifold. They include
communication, generation(生成) of power, transportation and travel, food production,
materials, fuels and many others. But to say definitely just what the practical results
will be is almost impossible.
60.The man idea of the first paragraph is that________.
A.man desires to explore what is unknown
B.man often goes wherever his dreams go
C.man is no longer interested in the study of the land and sea now

B.the exploration of space
C.exploring more in space than in other areas

63.In the last sentence of paragraph 2 the phrase "practical results" refers to the
results_______.
A.that are gained from experience
B.that can be learned as knowledge
C.that can benefit us human beings
D.that help us make further exploration

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching
allows the students to grow as people , and to develop their own interests in many
subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as
they are responsible for what they do in life. Some students do badly in a traditional
classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will
be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or
rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an
open classroom..
But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students,
there are too few rules. These students will do little in school. They will not make
good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional
education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices.
For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They worry
about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of
students. The last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not
like it. Many teachers do not believe in open education. Teachers who want to have an
open classroom may have many problems at their schools.
You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points
have been explained. You may have your own opinion about open education. The
writer thinks that open education is a good idea, but only in theory. In fact, it may not
work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that most students , but of
course not all students, want some structure in their classes. They want and need to
have rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students
are pleased to find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study those
subjects if they did not have to.
64.Open education allows the students to _____.
A. grow as the educated B. be responsible for their future
C. develop their own interests D. discover subjects outside class

66.Some students will do little in an open classroom because ______.
A. there are too few rules B. they hate activities
C. they worry about the rules D. open education is similar to the traditional
education
67. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

B. Many teachers do not believe in open education
C. Teachers may have problems in open education

The fourth film adaptation (改编) of the wildly popular J. K. Rowling books, "Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire" (《哈利·波特与火焰杯》) is released on November 18. Katie is about to
burst onto the big screen as the girl Cho Chang who wins Harry Potter’s heart.
Katie’s scenes in the film are set around the Hogwarts Yule Ball (圣诞舞会). Harry plucks
up courage to ask Cho to the dance. But Cho has a boyfriend and she must turn Harry down.
"I think she’s a really loyal person," Katie says of her character. "The scenes where Harry is
gazing at Cho from afar are fun. Cho sees Harry looking and gives him a look back. He then
thinks he’s got a chance, but he hasn’t. "
The story of Katie becoming Cho also has fairytale qualities. She went to the initial
audition (初试) in London after her dad saw an advertisement on a Chinese TV channel. The
actress had to be 16, which Katie was at the time, and of Eastern appearance. When the director
asked: "Who’s from Scotland?" Katie was the only one who put her hand up.
Although Katie had no previous acting experience, not even in a school play, she beat 5,000
hopefuls and won the role.
"I felt pretty confident but that was only because I was treating the auditions as a bit of fun.
I’m not the kind of girl who’s always dreamed of being an actress," Katie said.
"I’m the shy type, really. At school I could go without talking to anyone for days and days.
I was so shy that it was unbelievable and it never occurred to me that I could get into this business.
"Katie isn’t calling herself an actress just yet, although she won praise from Daniel Radcliffe
(who plays Harry) for her performance, who described her as a "natural".
Cho and Harry’s relationship develops in later books, but Katie doesn’t know if she’ll be in
the next film.
"I’d like to do more acting, but if‘Goblet of Fire’ turns out to be my only film then I think it
would be pretty cool to be known as Harry Potter’s first crush," she said.
72. From the text, what can we know about the girl, Katie Leung?
A. Before the play she played, everybody thought that she would be an actress because of her
beauty.
B. She plays as Harry Potter’s first crush.
C. She has no confidence when she was in the initial audition.
D. She will play another girl in next ‘Goblet of Fire’.
73. Why does the director choose Katie Leung as Cho Chang, who wins Harry Potter’s heart?
A. Because she played very well in the initial audition.
B. Because she was a pretty girl with long dark hair, and the most important was that she was
18 year old.
C. Because she was treating the auditions seriously.
D. Because she is a really loyal person.
74. Which of the following is right?
A. When she was a little girl, she dreamed of becoming a teacher.
B. In the play she played so well that she was praised by Daniel Radcliffe.
C. The writer thinks that the play will be well received by the people all over the world.
D. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is made on November 18.
75. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire B. Harry’s first lover — a shy girl
C. The successful the initial audition D. Unexpected film

四.One Possible Version
Film or book, which do you prefer?
Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the
original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides,
the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow.
Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more
detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is
possibly more lively and beautiful.
Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I
think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what’s more, I
am able to better understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read the original work is
better than to see the film based on it.
