There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process.
People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a
product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the
student whose grades improve, and the foreigner who learns a new language—all these
examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast (对照), the process of personal growth is much more difficult to
determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along
the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings
people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected
difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new
ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take
risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at
first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability
to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more
changes and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and
indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not
to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt
to change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are
likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary
if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal fears
and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped
inside a shell of our own making.

Would you like to be a king or queen? To have people waiting on you hand and foot?
Many Americans experience this royal (王室的) treatment every day. How? By being
customers (顾客).The American idea of customer service is to make each customer the
center of attention. Need proof ? Just listen to the advertisements: Most of them
sound like the McDonald’s said: “We do it all for you.”Actually, not all stores
in America roll out the red carpet (地毯) for their customers. But wherever you go,
good customer service means making customers feel special.
People going shopping in America can expect to be treated with respect from the very
beginning. Most places don’t have a “furniture street” or a “computer road” which
allow you to compare prices easily.Instead, people often use the telephone and “let
their fingers do the walking” through the Yellow Pages. From the first “hello,”
customers receive a courteous response to their questions. The contact for the first
time can help them decide where to shop.
When customers get to the store, they are treated as honored guests. Customers don’t
usually find store clerks sitting around watching TV or playing cards.Instead, the
clerks greet them warmly and offer to help them find what they want.In most stores,
the signs that label each department make shopping very easy. Customers usually don’t
have to ask how much items cost, since prices are clearly marked. And unless they’re
at a flea market (跳蚤市场) or a yard sale, they don’t bother trying to bargain (讨
价还价).
When customers are ready to check out, they find the nearest and shortest checkout
way. Good stores open new checkout ways when the ways get too long. Some even offer
express ways for customers with 10 items or less. After they pay for their purchases,
customers receive a smile and a warm “thank you” from the clerk. Many stores even
allow customers to take their shopping bags out to the parking place. That way, they
don’t have to carry heavy bags out to the car.

When William Met Jennifer
I was on the train, on my way home, when I saw Jennifer sitting in the same carriage.
My first thought was ” It’s her”. It was the girl I used to see every day in the
library when we were at university. Often I couldn’t concentrate on my work when
she was sitting so close to me, but in fact we never spoke once, all the time we were
there. And now, eight years later. Here she was.
So I walked up to her and said, “We’ve met before, haven’t we ? Weren’t you in
Durham University ?”Not a great line , I know ,but it broke the ice, and we talked
for the rest of the journey.
We got off the train at the same station, she said good-bye and disappeared. I was
kicking myself for not getting her telephone number. But then, thank goodness, she
came back and said she had to wait on the same platform for her next train. We carried
on talking, but when her train arrived, I realized that I didn’t have her number.
This was my last chance. I pushed a pen at her and she scribbled her number on a piece
of paper just as the train pulled out. I go home and the first thing I said to my
flat mate was: ”Do you remember that girl I couldn’t stop talking about at
university?” and he said, ”Oh, no…yes, of course I remember…” I then talked about

The ’80s’ “important role” in the family has also meant a greater concentration
and focus on the individual. And, it has made the word “me” one of the most frequently
used words. Everything seems to be about “me”. This generation has a greater
awareness of itself.
Some people do not seem to agree that all this is self-centred. When Cai Fuchao,
Beijing’s publicity head, was asked to comment on the lack of responsibility of
university students during the SARS period, his reply was: “Modern university

students are ambitious, knowledgeable and have a very strong sense of responsibility
to the society.”
As news analyst from sina.com, Pan Fengliang, echoed(随声附和)that, saying that
blindly blaming them(for running away during the SARS outbreak)was prejudiced and
unfair and not backed with evidence.
No doubt, the development of information technology has contributed its bit to
broadening, or bending, the minds of the 80s generation.
Some people even call Gen’80 “the E-generation”。 They get in touch with each other
via email, QQ, ICQ and MSN.
While the people of the ’60s and ’70s swarmed(涌往)to Shanghai to catch Luo Dayou,
Gen’80s were on the BBS saying that it was “really dumb”。
“The internet is so much more to those of the ’80s than you can imagine,” said
Wu Junyong, an IT engineer who was born in 1978.
In Wu’s opinion, it’s the Internet that separates the 70s from the 80s, “Many of
the’70s don’t see why those from the ’80s can spend everyday in front of a
computer.”
A new weekly Magazine/163.com survey last year found that 40 percent of the 7,000
people surveyed, born in the ’80s, thought the computer was the most important article
in life; more than 70 percent of their parents preferred the home.

In deciding upon a unit of measurement, it is possible to pick anything. For example,
the average height of a man could possibly have been a unit of measurement. In fact,
some of the units used today in English-speaking countries are based on such things
as the distance from a man’s elbow to the tip of his middle finger or the weight
of a grain of wheat.
- 5 -
Because there have been so many differences in weights and measures used in different
countries, an international system has been urged. One such system has been used by
all countries of the world, it is the metric system.
This is a system worked out by a committee of scientists appointed in France in l789.
The English-speaking countries are almost the only ones that do not use the metric
system in their measures. However it is used in scientific work even in those
countries.
The metric system is based on a measure of length called the “meter”. This is
approximately (近似) one ten-millionth of the distance on the Earth’s surface from
pole to equator, which is about 3937 miles.
The metric system is based on 10 as is our number system so that each unit of length
is 10 times as large as the next smaller unit. There are square and cubic units for
measuring area and volume which correspond to the units of length.
The unit of weight is the gram, which is the weight of a cubic centimeter of pure
water. The liter is a measure used as the quart is used, but it is a little larger.
The hectare, which is10, 000 square meters, is used as the acre in Britain, but is
2.471 acres. The metric system is more convenient to use than the English system
because its plan is the same as that of our number system.
Here are some equivalents for the metric and English systems:one foot equals 0.305
meter; one inch equals 2.540 centimeters; one mile equals 1.609 kilometers; one
quart(liquid)equals 0.946 liter.
17. Metric system should be used in the world because _______.
A. man measured the distance which is based on the distance from a man’s elbow to
the tip of his middle finger
B. the English-speaking countries used their own measurement
C. scientific work needs a unit of measurement
D. it is based on the weight of a grain of wheat an informal measure of weight is
used today
18. In_________, a committee of scientists worked out “Metric system”.
A. America B. Japan
C. France D. Germany
19. Which of the following units does NOT belong to “metric system”?
A. Acre B. Hectare
C. Kilometer D. Gram
20. This passage is mainly about ________ .
A. how to work out the metric system
B. what is the metric system
C. how to change other units into the metric system
D. the development of the metric system
