B Many years ago, when I graduated from school and was working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas. I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card. I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful. Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership-a shop selling cars-was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom. "Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said. "Thank you"-two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much. 49. The words "took off" underlined in Paragraph 2 mean " ". A. turned off B. moved off C. put off D. set up 50. This saying is all about the importance of breakfast. And now scientists can tell us just why it’s so important. According to a study carried out at Imperial College London, UK, skipping the first meal of the day not only means you eat more at lunch, but also that your brain wants to find more unhealthy foods. The study suggests that there is a special part of our brain called the orbitofrontal cortex (眶 额皮层), which plays an important part in making choices about what we eat. It is used for identifying the taste of food, especially when skipping breakfast. It is more likely to target high-calorie foods when you’re on an empty stomach. Scientists did an experiment on this. Dr Tony Goldstone from Imperial College London, scanned ( 扫 描 ) the brains of 21 men and women, around the age of 25. On the first day, these people skipped breakfast before the scans. On the second day, they had cereal (谷物), bread and jam as breakfast. After the scan on both days, they had their lunch. When the volunteers had skipped breakfast, they ate around 20 percent more at lunch, compared with days when they had eaten breakfast. Their brain scans also showed the orbitofrontal cortex was especially responsive to high-calorie foods. “We believe that bit identifies the value of foods – how pleasant, how delicious something is,” Goldstone told The Guardian. 53. From Paragraph 1, we learn that . A. scientists found out why eating breakfast is important B. it’s easy to lose weight without breakfast C. there’s no need to have good food for supper D. eating breakfast makes your brain smarter 54. Which is the correct order for the experiment on the first day? ① The volunteers skipped breakfast. ② The volunteers had lunch. ③ The volunteers had a brain scan. A.①②③ B.③②① C.①③② D.③①② 55. Which of the following is NOT true about the orbitofrontal cortex? A. It is part of our brain. B. It tells people to eat breakfast. C. It decides which food we like. D. It is active toward high-calorie foods. 56. Which of the following can be the title for this passage? A. Breakfast still most important B. Three meals a day C. Experiments on breakfast D. Researches on lunch D The book, Aliens Ate My Homework, is set in a small town in the United States. By the way the characters talk to each other and the description of items from their daily lives, I think the story takes place within the last 10 years. It is a story about a boy named Rod Allbright who goes to school like any other normal kid. Unfortunately, the class bully(恃强凌弱者) always picks on him because he is overweight. While he’s working on a school project for the science fair, tiny aliens(外星人) come, crashing through his bedroom window in a spaceship. They have come to the earth to get another alien, an evil one named BKR. He is known in other galaxies(星系) for his cruelties. Rod gets bullied throughout the entire novel. The bully’s name is Billy Becker, who is also called BKR! Rod does not discover that Billy is a bad alien until later on. This book has lots of action and the main character is fun to read about. The most exciting part is when the aliens and Rod find out that BKR is Billy Becker and they skip school and go to search his house. They get caught when BKR comes home from school. He traps them in a storing device where he keeps his alien items. They break free of the device and escape from his house with some difficulty. Rod Allbright is fun to read about because he can never tell a lie. This gets him into trouble when the aliens eat his homework and he can’t make up an excuse for the teacher. The main idea that the author shares is that there could be other galaxies out in the universe with intelligent life forms who could be almost the same as humans. In this book, the aliens are just like humans in the way they think even though they look different and have a different language. I have learned that if you are nice to people they will be nice in return. This is proven in the book because Rod is nice to the aliens and they return the favor. 57. The tiny aliens come to the earth to . A. look for resources B. do research on the earth C. find an alien who has got lost D. catch a cruel alien 58. What’s the right time order for the following events? a. Billy is found to be BKR. b. Tiny aliens come to the earth. c. Rod and the tiny aliens go to search BKR’s house. d. Rod and the tiny aliens are trapped, but later escape. A. abcd B. abdc C. bacd D. bcad 59. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. It pays to be kind to others. B. It pays to work for the science fair. C.Aliens are cruel to humans. D.Aliens and humans are alike. 60. The passage is mainly about . A. aliens B. school bullying C. a science fiction story D. a boy’s school life 第二节(共5小题,每题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容。从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Darling Kelli I’m so sorry I will not get to see you grow up as I so want to.
