Try this memory test. Mix up the cards in a deck(副) of playing cards. Now look
at the top seven cards. Can you remember these cards in the correct order that you saw
them after looking at the cards only once?
Dominic O'Brien can. In fact, he memorized the order of more than 2,000 cards
after looking at them only once! In 1993, Mr. O'Brien memorized the order of 40 decks
of cards after the cards were mixed up by looking at all of the cards one time. After he
got through looking at the cards, Mr. O'Brien recited all 2,000 of them in the correct
order on national television in England. He only made one mistake.
Mr. O'Brien also held the record for memorizing one deck of cards in only 56
seconds until Tom Groves broke the record in 1994. Mr. Groves, who is also from
England, memorized one deck of cards, after the cards had been mixed up, in 42
second. Keep in mind that there are 52 cards in a deck. He recited the order of the
cards with no mistakes.
Not everyone tries to prove their memory skills by reciting cards. Some people
memorize words or numbers. Hideaki Tomoyori of Japan wanted to prove that his
memory was the best in the world by reciting pi. Pi is a mathematical constant often
used in science which is almost equal to 3. 14159. This number never repeats itself or
ends.
Mr. Tomoyori wanted to memorize more of pi than any other person in the world.
He thought that he would go down in history as the man with the best memory when,
on March 9-10, 1978, he recited pi to 40,000 places. It took the 55-year-old man more
than 12 hours to recite the numbers, but he did it without making a mistake!
Then, eight years later, a 21-year-old man who was from Japan beat Mr.
Tomoyori's record. Hiroyuki Goto recited pi to 42, 195 places at the NHK television
station I Tokyo, Japan on February 18, 1995.
61. Mr. Groves did better than Mr. O'Brien because ________ .

D. he made fewer mistakes

D. become calm
63. Hiroyuki Goto beat Mr. Tommyrot’s record by ________
A. his younger age
B. reciting pi to more places
C. spending less hours
D. making fewer mistakes

The Bible (圣经) is the best-selling book in the world. It has been translated into
more than 300 languages.
Many different people have written their own copy or version of the Bible. One of
the most famous versions(版本) of the Bible is the Gutenberg Bible. This version of the
Bible was made and sold around 1457 A.D. No one knows for sure how many
Gutenberg Bibles were made. There were at least 70 copies made, but perhaps there
were as many as 270. However, today only 40 original Gutenberg Bibles exist.
Since 1815, more than six billion copies of the Bible have been made and sold.
Today, many different versions of the Bible are sold around the world. The most
popular version is Today's English Version of New Testament and Bible. The second
most popular version is the King James Version of the Bible.
Religious books like the Bible and the Koran (可兰经) are not protected by law
from people copying these books. Other books are protected by international laws, so
no one can copy or sell those books without permission.
Of these protected books, the Guinness Book of Records is the best selling book in
the world. The Guinness Book of Records first came out in 1955. The idea for the book
came when Sir Hugh Beaver got into an argument with his friend while the men were
hunting birds. The men tried to determine which was the fastest bird in England, but
even after looking for the answer at the local library, no one knew for sure, Sir Beaver
decided to write a book with this answer and the answer to many other questions like
the one he argued about with his friend.

million copies have been sold since it first came out.

Dear sir,
Just over six months ago, I saw an ad in the newspaper for a set of the complete
works of William Shakespeare. Your company Cosmos Books Ltd offered this set at a
remarkable price $156, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of
Shakespeare’s plays and poems for some time and these books looked particularly
attractive. So I sent for them. Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of
the complete works of Charles Dickens, which I had not ordered, so I returned the
Dickens books to you. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my door-step a
second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a
six-book set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I don’t read French or collect all
the books that I do not want, I asked you not to send any more books until further
notice.
You did not reply to that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for $86 and a set of the
plays of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two
weeks. All these books are still in their boxes, in the garage and my car has to stand in
the rain outside.
I have no room for any more books and even if I read them from now until my last
day, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me. Please send no
more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large truck
and take all the books away, leaving only one set of the complete works of
Shakespeare, which I have paid.
John Walker
68. When he had seen these books, Mr. Walker decided to ______.

71. The tone(语气) of the letter is that of _____.
A. bitterness B. respect C. anger D .humor
(D)
“It hurts me more than you.” and “This is for your own good.” are what my
mother used to say years ago when I had to learn French, clean my room, stay at home
and do homework.
That was before we entered the permissive(允许的) period in education in which
we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The
schools and educators made it easy on us. They taught us that it was all right to be
parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework.
We gave them computers, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and
went on holiday.
Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for
the past 15 years, come to know that we have made a terrible mistake. One such
teacher is Sharon Kolmpos who says of her students “so passive” and believes their
passivity has something to do with television. “We’re talking about a generation of
children who have never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will do it
for them. Instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes great
energy to say no to a child.”
Yes, it is time for parents to end their holidays and come back to work. It is time to
take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s
for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.
72. When the writer was a child, his mother________.
A. was strict with him
B. took a let-alone policy
C. offered them enough time for play
D. didn’t take good care of him
73. By “the permissive period in education” the writer means a time_______.
A. when every child can be educated
B. when everything can be taught at school
C. when children are permitted to receive education
D. when children are permitted to do what they wish to
74. Now children are becoming less active in their studies mainly because______.
A. they have to do homework
B. they watch TV too often
C. they have little time for play
D. the homework is too difficult for them
75. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Parents should leave their children alone.
B. Parents should leave the teaching to the teachers.
C. Parents should always say no to their children.
D. Parents should care for their children’s studies.
