Everybody hates rats. But rats may soon be man's new good friends. What happens after an
earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives.
They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So
now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain
gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio
signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has
smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Robots' noses don't
work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that. Rats can also see in the
dark, they are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need
electricity!
The "rat project" is not finished. But a scientist says, "It would be great. A rat could get into any
place we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history,
people will be happy to see a rat in a building ( but only after an earthquake, of course) .

"The day will be the most memorable in the history of America," wrote John Adams in 1776.
"People will honor it with parades, fireworks and celebrations," he added.
Since 1776, Americans have celebrated July 4 as the country's Independence Day. Several early
presidents of the United States died on July 4. They include John Adams, who became the second
president. Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the country's third president, both died on the country's
50th anniversary of Independence Day. James Monroe, the fifth US president, died on July 4, 1831.
And the 30th president, Calvin Coolidge, was born on July 4.
Most Americans celebrate Independence Day with barbecues, parades and fireworks. But a few
celebrate by eating all the hot dogs they can, Since the early 1970s, a restaurant called Nathan's

competition by eating 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The 2016 women's winner, Miki Sudo, has won
in each of the past three years. In 2016, she ate 38 and a half hot dogs. Sudo and Chestnut each
won a $ 10, 000 prize.

I believe that we can have an important effect on anyone we meet. The right words at just the
right time could change someone's life. When I was three years old, my parents discovered I
was deaf. After asking many doctors and parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me
in a normal school.
On my first day in the school, the other kids made fun of me because of my hearing aid. And
then I saw myself as an ugly kid.
Mrs. Jordan, my teacher changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase. One morning,
she asked the class a question. I read her lips (嘴唇) and raised my hand right away. She called
me. I took a deep breath and nervously answered Mrs. Jordan's question.
I will never forget what happened next. Mrs. Jordan pointed directly at me. With a big smile
she cried,
"That's right, Stephen! "For the first time in my young life, my confidence soared (剧增) .At
that moment, I decided that no matter how many difficulties I may face, I can overcome (克服)
them. Just from those three simple words, my life changed from that moment.
