3.阅读理解
Everybody hates rats. But rats may soon be man's new good friends. What happens after an
earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives.
They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So
now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain
gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio
signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has
smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Robots' noses don't
work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that. Rats can also see in the
dark, they are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need
electricity!
The "rat project" is not finished. But a scientist says, "It would be great. A rat could get into any
place we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history,
people will be happy to see a rat in a building ( but only after an earthquake, of course) .

Nowadays lots of kids are at home alone after school. Are you one of them? Kids who
regularly take care of themselves are called "latchkey kids".
This nickname got its start in the 1940s. Many men fought in the Second World War and women
had to take jobs in factories to keep the country going. With both parents away, lots of
kids went back to empty houses after school. Latchkey kids wore house keys around their necks
and they used the keys to open doors.
Today, it's common for both parents to work. As a result, a new generation of kids are spending
some time alone after school. It becomes necessary for both parents and kids to make some rules.
There are a lot of questions to talk about:
Should you call your mum, or dad as soon as you get home?
Should you do your homework first?
Can you watch TV or play computer games? If so, how long?
What can you eat if you want a snack?
Can friends come over? If so, how many?
⋯⋯
As latchkey kids, knowing how to stay safe is just as important as following the family rules. Talk
about the following questions with your parents:
What should you do when the phone rings?
What should you do if someone knocks at the door?
What should you do if someone breaks into the house?
What should you do if you cut yourself while cooking?

In Britain. Boxing Day is usually celebrated on December 26th, which is the following day after
Christmas Day. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like
Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a non-working day in the whole of
Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.
The exact origin (起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle
Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed
by a priest (神父) on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop
money into the box. It was sealed up and kept on board until the ship came home safely.
Then the box was handed over to the priest in exchange for the saying of a mass of thanks for the
success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.
One more thought is about the "Alms Box" placed in every church on Christmas Day.
Worshippers (做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day
after Christmas. That is why that day became known as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing
Day alive by donating (捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts
for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are
popular Boxing Day activities now.

A zero-waste life is a lifestyle that hardly creates any rubbish. So, a zero-waste store is about
providing a kind of everyday and pleasant-looking zero-waste products to help people start on a
zero-waste life journey.
"Zero waste" or "danshari" was first suggested by a French woman called Bea Johnson. Her idea
is: live a life and try not to create any rubbish; use different kinds of ways to save the environment
such as stopping the use of one-off objects; giving unwanted things to others or giving them away to
organizations like the Red Cross.
Yu Yuan, 27, is deeply interested in this idea. She and her boyfriend have lived in Beijing for
many years. And earlier she used to buy things without thinking about them carefully until she
saw a video about "zero waste", in which a family of four placed the rubbish they produced
every year in a jar (罐) . After watching the video, Yu wanted to experience this zero-waste
lifestyle with her boyfriend.
A zero-waste life follows the 6R rule-Refuse Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Rot. Over
August-October when Yu followed the rule of zero waste 6R, she and her boyfriend Joe Harvey both
produced only two cans of rubbish.
Now, the couple have opened a small shop in Beijing, where they use wood products to take
the place of plastic ones and cloth bags printed with environmentally friendly logos(环保标
志) . Most products sold in the store can be reused. The store also has second-hand books and
CDs/DVDs with, ideas to make the best of the used things.
"Those who once experienced the non-waste lifestyle have slowly changed their ideas," says Ya,
"The zero-waste lifestyle is not for ascetics (苦行僧) . It is just around us at our finger-tips." Yu
expects some of her friends to join her on the road to zero waste.

The other day, I got into a car accident, which was clearly not my fault. The other driver was
so busy on his phone that he went right through a red light and hit my car.
A traffic policeman arrived and started taking statements. I explained that my speed was about
55 km/h. "So you were going about 50 km/h, my lady?" he asked. "No, I said I was going about 55
km,/h," I said. "Right, so you were driving at a speed of about 50 km/h?" he asked again.
I was a little annoyed because I felt he wasn't listening to me carefully. So I shouted, "No! I was
going about 55 km/h."
"OK, if that's the way you want it," the officer simply replied. Because the city speed limit is 50
km/h, I only got paid from my insurance (保险) company for the damage to my car, but the
other driver's insurance company couldn't pay me due to my speed. I didn't realize it at the time,
