I live in a large neighborhood. I have lived here since I was born. I have a lot of
neighbors. My favorite neighbor is Mr Chan. He is 85 years old. I enjoy visiting Mr
Chan because he often tells me exciting stories about Hong Kong in the past. He also
shows me old photos. Yesterday, I visited Mr Chan after school. I asked him when and
why he moved here. This is what he told me:
"I have lived in the neighborhood since 1993. Before I moved here, I lived in a
small village called Pak Mong on Lantau Island. There were many people living in
the village when I was young. Now, there are only a few families left. Most families
moved to the city for work. I left the village in 1993, when my son moved to the city.
Pak Mong is an old village. There are watchtowers (瞭望塔) around the village.
In the old days, soldiers used to stand in the watchtowers and keep guard (站岗). Here
is a photo of my school. I went to that school a very long time ago. The school has
been closed since 1985.
Now, I enjoy going to the Kowloon Walled City Park, because it makes me
think of my old village. I have visited the park three times since 2004. Would you and
your family members like to go to the park with me next week?"

Do you like coke? Do you know we can cook chicken with it? And does it have
anything to do with our mobile phones? The latest cell phone, the “Coke Phone”, by
the Chinese designer Daizi Zheng is a surprise.
Daizi Zheng is a famous designer in England. The Nokia company asked her to
design a phone that is not bad for the environment. As a result of her research, she
found that normal phone batteries are expensive and bad for the environment. It also
uses many good resources(资源)to make a normal battery. So she wanted to design a
battery that is green. Then a Nokia cellphone that drinks coke was born.
The cell phone has a bio-battery(生物电池).It gets power from sugar. So users only
need to pour a glass of coke into it, and then watch the coke turn into power. Once the
battery dies, only oxygen and water are left. Bio-batteries can last three to four times
longer than the usual batteries. In fact, Zheng said that not only coke but also soda(苏

If so, you may never look at a can of coke in the same way again.

Nadya Vessey was born with an illness and her legs would never grow. At the age
of 16, both of her legs below (低于) the knees were cut off. Nadya Vessey hasn’t let
that destroy her. She recently changed herself into a mermaid (美人鱼).
It was a little boy that started Nadya’s change. One day a little boy saw her take
5
off her prosthetic (修复术的) legs and asked her why she didn’t have any legs. After
thinking quickly, she asked him whether he had heard of The Little Mermaid. He said
"Yes", so Nadya told him that she was a mermaid. Nadya said, "He was surprised and
said 'wow, that’s cool’ and ran off to tell his dad".
The idea of a mermaid became clearer and clearer in Nadya ’ s mind. After
thinking it over, she wrote to the Weta Workshop two years ago, asking if they could
make her a prosthetic tail (尾巴). She was surprised to get the reply that they agreed.
The Weta Workshop’s director was happy to make it happen and wanted Nadya to be
beautiful. It took the Weta Workshop two years to make a special suit for Nadya. After
practicing in the local swimming pool, Nadya went to the open sea and tried out her
mermaid suit. Nadya was pleased with it.
It is really surprising. It’s wonderful to watch Nadya swim and to see her dream
come true.
