What the Supreme Court says is that the practice doesn’t violate(违反,侵犯) a
student’s right to privacy, but is it right for students to grade one another?
Walter Potenza, California
The Supreme Court was absolutely correct to say it’s OK for students to grade one
another’s homework, quizzes, and tests: in fact, it’s a great idea.
By grading one another’s papers and seeing the problems their classmates have, students
double their exposure(暴露) to the troubles that they may meet on future exams and tests.
Grading one another’s papers may be one of the best ways for students to reinforce within
themselves the ways to master the most difficult parts of what they are learning.
Teachers are underappreciated and underpaid for the number of hours they have to work
to be able to teach really well. Grading all their students’ papers can take hours. Some
of that time and energy can be saved by spending a few minutes in class, while providing
an extremely valuable learning experience.
I understand that some individuals are sensitive to their classmates seeing their work
or grades. Any good teacher would be considerate of students who don’t want their classmates
to grade their assignments.
Winston Smith, North Carolina
A girl moves back as her classmate announces her failing test grade and hands her the
paper. The quiet classroom heats up.
With the increase in student grading over the past few years, scenes like this have
become a bitter reality in schools across the nation. Teachers and schools should not
advocate student grading and public announcement of grades because it provides a violation
of privacy for students and causes unfair judgments and treatment by their classmates.
Since 1974, a law known as the Buckley Amendment has forbidden the release of education
records in order to protect the privacy of students and their families. I strongly disagree
with the Court’s ruling that this law does not include student grading.
I can think of no greater violation of privacy than the exposure of one’s personal
information to a group of peers (同龄人). This can be very embarrassing. Releasing this
sort of personal information should be avoided, especially by institutions that seek to
provide a supportive environment during essential years of human development.

Sleep deprivation(缺失)is an important hidden factor in lowering the achievement of
school pupils, according to researchers carrying out international education tests.
It is a particular problem in richer countries with sleep experts linking it to the
use of mobile phones and computers in bedroom late at night. Sleep deprivation is such a
serious problem that lessons have to be dragged down to a lower level to suit sleep-deprived
learners, the study found. The international comparison, carried out by Boston College,
found the United States to have the highest number of sleep-deprived students, with 73%
of 9- and 10-year-olds and 80% of 13- and 14-year-olds identified by their teachers as being
negatively affected.
In literacy(读写能力) tests there were 76% of 9- and 10-year-olds lacking sleep. This
was much higher than the international average of 47% of primary pupils needing more sleep
and 57% among the secondary age group.
Other countries with the most sleep-deprived youngsters were New Zealand, Saudi Arabia,
Australia, England, Ireland and France. High-performing Finland is also am ong the most
lacking in sleep. Countries with the best records for getting enough sleep include

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Japan and Malta.
The analysis was part of the huge date-gathering process for global education rankings,
the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study(TIMSS)and Progress in
International Reading Literacy Study(PIRLS)
“I think we underestimate the impact of sleep. Our data show that across countries
internationally, on average, children who have more sleep achieve higher in maths, science
and reading. That is exactly what our data show,” says Chad Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS
International Study Center.
“It’s the same link for children who are lacking basic nutrition,” says Mr Minnich,
based at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College. “If you are unable to concentrate,
to attend mentally, you are unable to achieve at your best level, because your mind and
body are in need of something more basic. Sleep is a fundamental need for all children.
If teachers report such large proportions of children suffering from lack of sleep, it’s
having a significant impact. But worse than that, teachers are having to adjust their
instruction based on those children who are suffering from a lack of sleep. The children
who are suffering from a lack of sleep are driving down instruction.”
That means that even the children who are getting enough sleep are still suffering from
this sleep-related lowering.
59.What did the researchers of Boston College try to find?
A. Why children don’t get enough sleep.
B. What makes bad performance in study.
C. The relationship between sleep and health.
D. The relationship between sleep and test results.
60. Many children suffer from sleep deprivation because _________.
A. children in developed countries need less sleep than those in developing countries
B. a lot of their time is occupied by modern technological devices
C. too much homework consumes too much of their time
D. they can hardly sleep soundly and deeply
61. Which of the following countries has the most sleep-deprived students?
A. Japan B. Malta C. Finland D. Portugal
62. Why are children who get enough sleep also victims?
A. Because they are disturbed by sleep-deprived students in class.
B. Because they have to spend time helping sleep-deprived students
C. Because the teachers waste time disciplining sleep-deprived students

D. Because teaching is driven down accordingly due to sleep-deprived students.

The language used by scientists to explain complex ideas can be difficult and sometimes
even boring. The language, with its Latin words and long scientific terms, could be one
reason some people avoid learning about science, especially children.
American Danielle Dixson is a marine biologist. She wants to make science fun for
children. Dixson has turned that idea into a series of children's books. The nine books
are written so that her research is easy to understand.
"I just don't really think kids should be left out of it and I thought that story books
may be one of the easiest ways to sort of captivate them and have them understand."
Danielle Dixson is an assistant professor at the University of Delaware. Dixson says
another goal of her science writing is to help increase understanding of the ocean
environment.
She spent almost two years in the South Pacific working on her post-doctoral research.
She went to the island nation of Fiji to investigate coral reefs that are collapsing or,
as she says, degrading.
The goal of her research is to identify why some healthy coral reefs are breaking down.
She also wants to find out how this degradation affects fish that live in and around the
reefs.
"A number of the reefs are converting from being, you know, these beautiful coral reef
systems that have a lot of holes for animals to hide in, into reefs that the coral's degrading
and collapsing and then there is not as much hiding spaces for fishes and things like that."
Early in her research, Dixson made some videos for people in Fiji. The videos explained
her work to the local community. She says she wanted them to understand how her research
would help them.
For the local children, Dixson started making books explaining her work. This helped
to keep them from walking through her "laboratory" - baby pools filled with water she was
using for her experiments. "I was living, actually, in the village with some of the locals.
It was a lot easier to get research done if they understood what I was doing and how it
would help them. And one of the ways that I was able to connect with the adults was I would

make these videos for them. And then I started making children's books for the kids so that
they would have a better idea of why I was there, so that when I ask them not to walk through
the baby pools I was using for experiments or something like that, that that would actually
happen." she added.
When Dixson returned to the United States, she started doing the same thing for children
in this country. She uses colorful story books to capture the imagination of children. While
she has their attention, she provides very useful information about science.
As a marine scientist, Dixson wants her stories to be both educational and inspirational,
serving as an agent for change. She also includes in her books "a call to action," asking
readers what they can do to make a difference.
"One of the things I do in those story books is I have a last page. And the last page
talks about what you can do to help. You know, there is a lot of things that even a 6-year-old
is able to do, whether it's shutting your lights off when you leave a room, or riding your
bike to your friend's house instead of having your parents drive you. There is a lot of
stuff that they can do and still feel they're making a difference."
Danielle Dixson's books shine a light on the environmental problems facing our world's
oceans. They also make science fun and understandable for children. But her books may have
an unintended consequence, something she may not have planned on.
63. What may lead to people’s negative attitude toward science learning?
A. Scientists are always boring and difficult to communicate with.
B. The language usually contains complicated words and terms.
C. The language can’t explain scientific ideas clearly.
D. People don’t need to understand science at all.
64. Which of the following may be the purpose of Dixson’s science writing?
A. To warn people of dangerous ocean lives. B. To make the record of her research.
C. To make people aware of ocean environment. D. To raise money for her research
65. What can we infer from Dixson’s research on coral reefs in Fiji?
A. Coral reefs can shelter many fishes around.
B. Children there helped her a lot to accomplish books.
C. The videos she made served the local community well.

If You Get In, Make College Count
As tuition costs rise, with post-undergraduate (本科毕业后) jobs difficult to find,
is higher education worth the cost?
Here is an unfortunate truth: For far too many incoming freshmen, college-any college
-is not worth it. Year after year, students fail to get the full value of their tuition.
Many critics blame this cost/value problem on the universities, though each critic might
point to a different reason: teachers always think of difficult research, the high costs
of athletics, or the popularity of majors that are supposedly not suited to the new job
market, to name some of their favorites.
But these are symptoms and not the illness itself. In our experience, the source of
the wasted university experience begins with the student. Too often, students make bad
choices or, frankly, just not enough great choices.
Too often we meet students who are so exhausted by the business of getting into college
that they don’t work hard once they arrive-one of the most common wastes of time and tuition.
A poorly constructed transcript (成绩单) can be destructive to a student’s education.
Failure to engage and build professional working relationships with professors in office
hours (which may lead to continued study, internships and more) also hurts the student’s
experience.[ Another mistake is failing to make use of the many support networks on today’s
college campuses. It’s almost embarrassing how many good offerings are rolled into each
tuition dollar, but most students don’t know they exist.
Another common point of failure is filling the schedule with too many extracurricular
activities as students once did in high school, rather than getting intensely involved in
one or two at most. The same can be said of overburdened course loads.
The final great failure we frequently see is the approach students (and their parents)
take to selecting a major and accurately seeing its impact on a future career. University

systems are not vocational schools. While critics nowadays complain about the attraction
of useless majors – and some do exist – more frequently we see too many students pursue
a course of study that is not their strength, simply because it seems to have obvious
connections to a potential job after graduation.
Rather than perform poorly in a “practical” major and be of little interest as a future
job candidate, we say it is better to major in a subject where a student would do well and
master the tools of communication and analysis. Students who choose a unique major should
complement (使更具有吸引力) that with some well-chosen skill courses, internships and other
co-curricular activities that help with career opportunities after college.
So, is college worth it? It can be. Studies show that college graduates have many
advantages – material, social and emotional – that can lead to greater success later in
life.
To get the full value out of college, students must be as diligent and creative about
getting out of college as they were about getting in. After all, the most beautiful, Olympic
saltwater pool does you no good if you don’t know how to swim.

A Fair Competition
Swifter, Higher and Stronger stands for the spirit of the Olympics. But fairness is
the basis of this motto. Only when you win fairly will you and your homeland deserve the
great glory. But nowadays, unlike the ancient honest slave competitors, some hopeless
athletes who can’t bear the pain of training cheat when taking part in games. Medals seem
to have magical power causing them to cheat, and the prize money has replaced the motto
as their only goal.
So, in the gymnastics event to be held in our city next month, one of the host’s
responsibilities is to keep competitions fair. They advertised on posters outside the
stadium to promise that every competitor is to have a regular physical examination in a
gymnasium one after another. No one can bargain on this. The volunteers in charge will be
very strict. It is foolish to cheat because they will not be admitted to compete and will
even be fined as well.
书面表达(满分 15 分)
The quotation from Winston Churchill tells us that we shouldn’t get discouraged right
after failures. Rather, we should keep trying with enthusiasm. Success consists in the
ability to continue efforts through failures.
Such is my own experience. At the age of ten, I got a nice bike as a birthday gift. So
excited was I that I couldn’t wait to try my hand at riding it. However, it was harder
than expected. The bike seemed too heavy and difficult to control. Worse still, I took many
falls off the bike. I was about to give up when my father came and encouraged me to keep
going. With more practice, I did better and better. Looking back, I wouldn’t be able to
ride a bike now had I lost heart.
Actually, we can’t succeed in everything we try. What’s important is that we should
stick to it and never give up.
