Years ago I gave a speech called “Powerful Phrases for Positive People”. These are
very 36 but powerful phrases that we all like to 37 : “I’m proud of you.” “I
believe 38 you.” “I trust you.” “I love you.” “You can do it.”
39 Thanksgiving Day approaching, we all 40 be focused on another one
-----------------积累点滴、跨越卓越------------------- 4
of these powerful phrases, in 41 : “I thank you.” We can never 42 up that
phrase. It should always be 43 the tip of our 44 if we are truly grateful to
others who help us each day and to 45 who has richly blessed us with more
abundance and freedom than any country in history.
Despite God’s abundant blessings, we’re often too 46 to give thanks and too
quickly to complain. Maybe we’re so focused on ourselves and 47 with our lives
that we forget to give thanks. Or maybe it’s because those of us in America have
become complacent(自满的)with a level of luxury and leisure beyond the imagination
of much of the world’s population.
We tend to 48 our blessings for granted, like the story about a house owner who
49 a real-estate(房地产) agent to prepare an ad to 50 his house. The house
owner was 51 the ad in the paper about his house’s many 52 features. He
called the real-estate agent to say he no longer wished to sell. When 53 what
changed his mind, the house owner said, “After reading your ad, I 54 I already live
in the house I 55 wanted to live in.”
In this season of Thanksgiving in particular, it’s time to count our blessings and
pull out that simple phrase, “I thank you.”

第三部分 阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Do dogs understand us?
Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.
A border collie(牧羊狗)named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects,
say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as
easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or
chimpanzee(黑猩猩).
In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to
know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go
and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40
commands right. As the dog couldn’t see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico
must understand the meanings of certain words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before
and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner
then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.
The correct object was chosen in seven out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had
worked out the answer by process of elimination ( 排 除 法 ) . A month later, Rico
remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.
Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie,
a breed(品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been
trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.
It’s hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if
they do, they can’t talk back. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now
and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!
56. From paragraph 2 we know that ______.
A. animals are as clever as human beings
B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees
C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills
D. dogs have similar learning abilities as 3-year-old children
57. Both experiments show that ______.
A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right
B. Rico can recognize different things including toys
C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics
D. Rico won’t forget the names of objects once recognizing them
-----------------积累点滴、跨越卓越------------------- 6
58. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie’s mental abilities.
B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training.
C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.
D. Rico is born to understand its owner’s commands.
59 . What does the writer want to tell us?
A. To train your dog. B. To talk to your dog.
C. To be friendly to your dog. D. To be careful with your dog.

It can be said that tea is the most popular drink in the world, apart from just
plain water. Even the word for “tea” in many languages around the world comes
from different changes of the Chinese word “茶”.
Chinese tea can be classified into 5 kinds. Green tea is perhaps the most natural,
with no fermentation (发酵) of the leaves. Longjing, Maofeng and Biluochun are
the most famous varieties. Black tea, known in China as red tea, is fermented before
being baked. This is the kind of tea most commonly drunk in the West. Wulong tea
is a variety half way between green and black teas, being made after partial
fermentation. It is a specialty ( 特 产 ) from southeast China, particularly Fujian,
Guangdong and Taiwan. Compressed tea are teas that have been, of course,
compressed and hardened into a certain shape. These are often called brick tea. We
will learn a bit about this when we visit Inner Mongolia. Finally, we have flower tea.
This kind of tea is made by adding flowers or other fragrances in with the tea.
Jasmine (茉莉花) tea is perhaps the most famous.
Tea has been one of the daily necessities in China for thousands of years, and
has spread to be enjoyed by people around the world.

B. the making of Chinese tea

Suppose we built a robot to explore the planet Mars, we provide the robot with
detectors ( 探 测 器 ) to keep it away from danger. It is powered entirely by the sun.
Should we program the robot to be equally active at all times? No. The robot would be
using up energy at a time when it was not receieving any sunshine. So we would
probably program it to stop its activity at night and to wake up at dawn the next
morning.
According to the evoloutionary (进化的) theory of sleep, evolution equipped us
with a regular pattern of sleeping and waking for the same reason. The theory does not
deny that sleep provides some important restorative functions(恢复功能). It merely says
that evolution has programmed us to perform those functions at a time when activity
would be inefficient and possibly dangerous. However, sleep protects us only from the
sort of trouble we might walk into; and it does not protect us from trouble that comes
looking for us. So we sleep well when we are in a familiar, safe place, but we sleep
lightly, if not at all, when we fear that bears will nose into the tent.
The evolutionary theory explains the differences in sleep among creatures. Why do
cats, for instance, sleep so much, while horses sleep so little? Surely cats do not need
five times as much repair and restoration as horses do. But cats can afford to have long
periods of inactivity because they spend little time eating and are unlikely to be attacked
while they sleep. Horses must spend almost all their waking hours eating, because what
they eat is very low in energy value. Morever, they cannot afford to sleep too long or
too deeply, because their survival depends on their ability to run away from attackers.
64. The author used the example of the robot in space exploration to tell us ______.
A. the differences between robots and man
B. the reason why man needs to sleep
C. about the need for robots to save power
D. about the danger of man working at night
65. Evolution has programmed man to sleep at night chiefly to help him ______.
A. keep up a regular pattern of life
B. prevent trouble that comes looking for him
C. avoid danger and inefficient labor
-----------------积累点滴、跨越卓越------------------- 8
D. restore his bodily functions
66. According to the author, we cannot sleep well when we are ______.
A. worrying about our safety B. overworked
C. in a tent D. away from home
67. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?
A. Evolution has equipped all creatures with a regular pattern of sleeping and waking.
B. The study of sleep is an important part of the evolutionary theory.
C. Sleeping patterns must be taken into consideration in the designing of robots.
D. The sleeping pattern of a living creature is determined by the food it eats.

Dombey and Son, published in 1848, was one of Dickens’ most powerful novels
that directly attacked the vices (罪恶) of the capitalists.
The story opens with the birth of a son to Mr. Dombey, the wealthy head of the
shipping house of Dombey and Son, and the death of Mrs. Dombey who fails to survive
the childbirth. Dombey loves his little son Paul very much because the boy can succeed
in the family business, while his daughter Florence cannot. Paul is sent to Dr. Blimer’s

ill and dies at last.
Dombey then has a second marriage which turns out to be a bargain (交易) for
both sides concerned. Edith Granger, the second wife,is beautiful but poor and proud.
Dombey gives her social position and wealth and expects her to give him a son in return.
Edith shows great love for Florence but Dombey interrupts and separates the two, and
then Edith runs away to France with Carker, Dombey’s manager.
This is followed by business failures for Dombey, but the novel winds up in a
“happy” ending when Dombey, having lost his wealth, his son and his wife and living in
solitude (孤独), is comforted by the return of his daughter Florence who is now married
to an employee of his firm, Walter Gay.
68.Why does Mr. Dombey marry Edith Granger?

When travelling abroad, one must remember Dorothy’s famous words that you’re
not in Kansas anymore. There are many dangers that one can face in a new and different
environment and the best way to protect yourself is to be well aware of possible dangers
before you depart. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe and pleasant trip.
● Read up on what The State Department has to say. The State Department does an
excellent job of watching out for our safety and protecting us in our travels by providing
Travel Warnings (http://travel.state.gov/travel_wamings.html) (advising Americans to
avoid certain countries), Public Announcements (postings of significant risks to the
security of American travelers) and Consular( 领 事 的 )Information Sheets for every
country in the world. Be sure to check in when planning your trip, and before you leave.
●Remember that you are a guest in a different country. Do your best to mix in with
the locals by taking note of their talk and behavior. Buy or borrow a book from the
library that teaches you about the local customs and beliefs.
●Try to stay in areas where there are lots of people and avoid wandering around
new places where there is the possibility of getting lost.
●Feel free to make friends with locals, but remember that they are still strangers
and you do not know them. Be cautious of information that you share —especially
about where you are staying.
●Make a copy of your passport and inform the US Embassy( 大 使 馆 ) in the
country you will be visiting before you leave. Should you come into any danger, the US
Embassy is there to help and protect you. Having proper proof of identity will help
ensure a safe and speedy return home.
●Map out a sight-seeing roam (漫步;漫游;流浪) before you leave the hotel. This
will minimize(减少)your chances of getting lost. It is also a good idea to ask for a
contact (联系) card at your hotel so that you can return or contact them in case you do
get lost.
●Learn enough of the language to communicate. Not only will you be glad you did
when it comes time to request help, but locals will respond warmly to you when they
see that you are trying to speak their language.
72. . What do Dorothy’s words mean?
A. Don’t miss your home when you are out travelling.
B. It is better never travel outside Kansas.
C. It is safer travelling in Kansas.
D. When you travel out, you might come into some unsafe situations.

Dear Professor Liu Kai,
I want to thank you for offering me such useful advice during my research. I have
completed my article about advertisements, and I’m quite satisfied 76 it. It has
just been published on our school website. I never knew that advertisements were so
interesting! The information I found will really help me to educate others. I hope that
after they 77 my article, my schoolmates will understand that PSAs 78
intended to educate us about public welfare issues, and 79 commercial ads are
meant to promote products or services. Before our talk, I did not think very much about
how an advertiser might be trying to trick customers 80 buying a 81 or
a service. Now I think I will be much smarter about what things to buy. Even if there are
lots of exciting images and persuasive language. I will remember to think about the
things I buy. I will also pay a 82 more attention to the nationwide public service
ad campaigns because now I know how helpful they can be. I will encourage my friends
