A Every year there are hundreds of earthquakes in different parts of the world. In September, 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were both destroyed by an earthquake and the fires that followed it. They had to be completely rebuilt. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China's Shaanxi Province in 1556.It killed almost one million people. We measure an earthquake's strength on the Richter Scale. The Richter Scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious. The Earth's crust(地壳) is made up of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. In cities such as Tokyo, where small quakes happen quite often, many modern buildings are designed to be flexible so when the plate moves, they move with it. Earthquakes can also break up gas and oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself. Another effect of earthquakes is tsunamis. These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to coastal towns and cities. China, Japan, Russia and the USA have the highest occurrence (发生)of earthquakes in the world. 1.The passage is mainly about _________. C People are less likely to yawn(打哈欠) when others do as they get older, a study has found. Contagious( 传 染 的 ) yawning is related more closely to a person’s age than tiredness and energy levels, USbased scientists said. Researchers are now looking at whether to catch yawns from other people is a born ability, with the hope of helping treat some mental health disorders. People with some mental illnesses are reportedly less able to catch yawns, researchers said, so understanding the genes( 基 因 ) that are connected with contagious yawning could open new paths for treatment. In the study, published in the journal Plos One, 328 participants were shown a threeminute video showing other peop le yawning. Each participant had to click a button every time they yawned. Overall, 68 percent of the participants yawned. Of those, 82 percent of people aged under 25 yawned, compared with 60 percent of people aged between 25 and 49, and 41 percent of people aged over 50. Dr Elizabeth Cirulli, assistant professor of medicine at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, led the study. She said, “This is the first study to look at a large number of factors. It is the largest study, when it comes to the number of people participating, till now.” She said she did not know why contagious yawning reduced with age. Dr Cirulli added that although age was the most important predictor(预测器) of contagious yawning, only 8% of the change in whether or not a participant yawned was explained by their age. “Most of change in the contagious yawning reaction was just not explained,” said Dr. Cirulli. Robert R Provine, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, said the study was “special” as it was the first time a link between ageing and contagious yawning had been shown. Prof Provine said the findings could help to understand why laughing and coughing were so contagious. He added, “Contagious acts such as yawning and laughing remind us that we are often mindless to control our behaviour.” 9. Why do the researchers carry out studies on yawning? A. To stop yawning from spreading B. To deal with some mental illnesses C. To find out yawning is a born activity D. To help prevent people from yawning 10. What can we learn from the study on yawning? A. The study lasted for 3 minutes. B. A 15yearold boy is more likely to yawn than a 50yearold man. C. People with mental disease are more likely to yawn when others do. D. Age has the most important influence on contagious yawning. 11. Which of the following is Professor Provine’s opinion? A. The study is so far the largest one as for the number of people participating. B. Aging and contagious yawning are closely related. C. People are often influenced by contagious acts without knowing it. D. Factors besides age also have an effect on contagious yawning. 12. What is the best title of the passage? A. New paths for treatment of mental disorders. B. Opinions of professors on contagious yawning. C. Influences of contagious yawning on people. D. Ageing and contagious yawning. D There are a number of different ways to study a language, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. You may find a combination(融合,结合) of these is a best choice for you. 3 If you can find a course in the language you want to learn in your country, this is quite a good way to study. A variety of courses are usually available, including parttime and fulltime courses. If you look around, you can probably find a course that suits your needs. The main advantage of such courses is that you'll have a teacher to provide you with instructions, support and with whom to practice your language. You will also be studying with others who are at more or less the same level and you can exchange ideas with them and help one another. One choice is to study a language in a country where it's spoken. There are many schools teaching English, French, Spanish, Italian and German, but far fewer teaching other languages. The main advantage of studying abroad is that you are totally in the language, not just in class, but the rest of the time as well. As a result, you can make rapid progress. The main disadvantage of studying abroad is the cost, not just of your course, but also of your food and travel. However, if you're a native speaker of English, you could get a job teaching English in a country where the language you want to learn is spoken. Studying online is also a good choice. There are plenty to choose from a lot of languages. Many are free but there are some you have to pay for. Some of the paid ones provide support from teachers via email, chat programs, video conference, telephone or even face to face. 13. Studying in your country has many advantages except that . A. there are many courses to choose from B. you can study with others of the same level C. all the courses are free of charge D. the teacher can offer you instructions and practice 14. Compared with two other ways, the obvious disadvantage of studying abroad lies in its . A. various courses B. high cost C. studying time D. job chances 15. The online courses ________ A. are all free of charge B. can't be found everywhere C. can be easily taken on the Internet D. are all supported by teachers 二. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (共 5 题*2 分=10 分) Life in the late 21st century will be different from that nowadays, because many changes will take place then, but what will the changes be? 16 There will be more and more people in the world and most of them will live longer than today.
