Here are some great scholarships and grant opportunities to get the ball rolling on your dreams of being a teacher. Straightforward Teacher Program This is one of the most popular and unique scholarships available for students working towards being teachers. The foundation offers their scholarships every three months as opposed to each year. During each payment, four students receive a $500 scholarship. Prezell Robinson Scholarship Program While this scholarship is available only to students in the state of North Carolina, it is so incredibly helpful that many students choose to study in the state for the only purpose of receiving it. It is offered to college students who e from low-ine high schools or families that are interested in pursuing a long term career in education at any level. New York State Scholarship Program Officials in the state of New York founded this program to award students who want to give back to their munity through their ability to teach. The catch for this scholarship is that the students must be pursuing a teaching career in mathematics or science at the secondary level. Also, because the program was designed to improve the education system in New York, the candidates must sign a service contract agreeing to work full time within the state for at least five years after graduation. Coca-Cola Scholarships You may have many opportunities for grants and scholarships through The Coca Cola Foundation. There is the Coca Cola Teaching Foundation that will provide free money for students pursuing an education in the teaching field. This is the most obvious for teachers, but do not be afraid to check out their other offers. Funds For Teachers Not all scholarships or grants are for students entering or already in college. The Funds for Teachers scholarships are for graduates who are already working in the field, but want to improve their possibilities, skills and education in an effort to increase their ability to teach the students that cross their path more effectively. Five Scholarships for Students B We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it. Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed – no examination is perfect – but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in school or on teachers. This would mean everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher. Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them – a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his school’s reputation, unable to pete for employment with the child from the favored school. The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some puter. 6. The word “ favoritism” in paragraph 3 is used to describe the phenomenon that________. A. bright children also need certificates to get satisfying jobs. B. children from well-respected schools tend to have good jobs. C. poor children with certificates are favored in job markets. D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great success. 7. What would happen if examinations were taken away according to the author? A. Schools for bright children would lose their reputation. B. There would be more opportunities and excellence. C. Children from poor families would be able to change their schools. D. Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation. 8. The opponents of the examination system will agree that____________. A. jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection B. puters should be selected to take over many jobs C. special classes are necessary to keep the school standards D. schools with academic subjects should be done away with 9. The passage mainly focuses on ____________. A. schools and certificates B. examinations and equality C. opportunity and employment D. standards and reputation 10. The underlined word “reputation” means ____________. A. successful achievement B. good title C. strict management D. fame 四.阅读表达 [1] The kids get home from school—tired, hungry and looking for entertainment. The last thing they want to do is to get on with their homework. However, at this very time, parents often remind the kids to do their homework by nagging(唠叨) and cajoling(哄骗). If that doesn’t work, homework wars break out. But with some basic rules and good habits, they can be avoided. [2] When it es to preparing your kids for homework success, one of the first things to begin is the environment they are working in. Not all children will like working alone in their bedrooms. Some children might prefer to study at the kitchen table, and providing that location works for the family, there’s no reason to force them into another room. [3] Try to keep the house relatively quiet and free of distractions. If you’re worried you can’t provide the right equipment or environment at home, see whether the local library could offer an alternative place to study. Also, some schools will offer homework clubs, where students can plete homework and seek help from a supervising teacher(指导老师)if needed. [4] Once you’ve got the study environment sorted, think about when is _____ for homework to be done. If children are old enough to make plans, it can be worth sitting down together and breaking projects into smaller tasks to be pleted on different nights. This can stop kids form feeling overwhelmed(被压垮)and it also teaches them time management skills. [5] If you follow the above rules, you can avoid homework wars down the track. And if tensions are rising at home around homework, remember that a little bit of kindness can go a long way. 1. What’s the main idea of the text? We have both achieved success and suffered from failure. Different students take different attitudes to failure. Some fall in low spirits when they don't do well in the exams. They usu ally lose heart and no longer study hard as before. But most students take an active attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be self-confident. They found out and analyze the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistakes. I agree with those with active attitudes. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. Even great men have failed many times before t hey succeeded. So we must deal with our failure correctly.
